Historic Christ Church

Lancaster is the birthplace and childhood home of Mary Ball Washington, mother of George Washington, and a stop by the museum named in her honor is worth the trip. The Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library has set out to preserve and honor the historic town buildings of Lancaster Courthouse, the town nearest the place of her birth. Nearby, historic St. Mary’s Whitechapel is one of few surviving colonial churches and counts among its early leadership the grandfather of George Washington. A vibrant arts scene, festivals, concerts, exhibits, farmer’s markets and more keep Lancaster hopping with activity and community spirit. Events geared toward celebrating community life will fill your calendar with activities right here in the Northern Neck. The Rappahannock River Waterfowl Show in White Stone held in March is an impressive start. This high-quality art festival is in its 33rd year and showcases all forms of wildfowl art including paintings, prints, carvings, decoys, photography and more. Springtime ushers in Easter egg hunts and historic garden week sponsored by the Garden Club of the Northern Neck. Starting in May, the farmer’s market offers local, fresh goods every month in Irvington. Combine the market with the Parade of Homes and the Northern Neck Antiques Fair for a full day of hometown fun. In June, Kilmarnock hosts its popular 4th Annual Wine Festival with tastings of regional wines. Lancaster’s small town charm is in full bloom in July with several classic events. Irvington salutes the red, white, and blue with a Fourth of July parade, air force band concert, and fireworks over Carters Creek. In Kilmarnock, the kids can celebrate America at the traditional Firemen’s Carnival, now in its 77th year. A highlight of late summer is the Bay Seafood Festival held at Belle Isle State Park. Tickets go fast for this popular seafood lover’s event.
