FUN in the Summertime…. Northern Neck Style

f you are visiting the Northern Neck in the summer there is plenty to do. If you love history, the Steamboat Era Museum offers a glimpse of the way life was back when steamboats were the main source of transportation and means for transporting goods along the river, stopping at many communities along the way. This interactive museum will delight all ages. If you visit the Historic Christ Church & Museum in Weems you will find the most finely crafted Anglican Parish Church in all of colonial Virginia, where tours are lead by docents in period costumes. Venture to Northumberland County, to the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum which is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the maritime history of the lower Chesapeake Bay Area, to the waterman who plied their trade here for hundreds of years and to the menhaden industry that has existed in Reedville for over one hundred years. The history of the Northern Neck can be found at Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library. Its purpose is to preserve the history of Lancaster County. It opened in 1958 and was named in honor of George Washington’s mother, Mary Ball, a Lancaster County native.

Keeping the young busy can include summer art classes at the Rappahannock Art League in downtown Kilmarnock, theatre workshops with the Lancaster Players in White Stone or take part in the many summer camps, offered at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club, Camp Kekoka, Chesapeake Academy, and the Northern Neck Family YMCA. If you have always wanted to learn to sail, Premier Sailing School has classes located at the Tides Inn in Irvington, with Carters Creek on one side for small boat sailing and the wide waters of the Rappahannock River for bigger sailboats. Northern Lancaster County offers one of Virginia’s most beautiful parks, Belle Isle State Park. Belle Isle has seven miles of shoreline on the Rappahannock River and provides access to Mulberry and Deep Creeks. The park lets visitors explore a wide variety of tidal wetlands interspersed with farmland and upland forests. Belle Isle also offers hiking, biking, and bridle trails as well as motorboat and car-top boat launches. Rent a kayak or motorboat, or enjoy the parks playground, board walk and fishing pier, and education programs.

The Town of Irvington and the Irvington Village improvement Association hosts one of the finest farmers markets in the state. It is held the first Saturday of every month in season. Pick up gourmet treats, local produce and arts from a variety of artisan vendors. Do not miss Irvington’s iconic Fourth of July parade and Air Force Band concert as well. The Kilmarnock Fireman’s Carnival held the first week in August, offers rides, games and the best funnel cake around. Play a round of golf at the King Carter Golf Course or Golden Eagle Golf Club, and then relax with light fare and a beverage at their club houses. Take a guided tour with experienced watermen who make their living harvesting the bounty of the bay and river. Watch a ball game at Dream Fields and remember day’s pasts when baseball and hot dogs made for a fine afternoon. Chamber Business Person of the Year 2015

B.H.B. Hubbard III T

he Lancaster by the Bay Chamber of Commerce’s first ever Business Person of the Year was nominated with overwhelming support by its members. Attorney B.H.B. Hubbard III, known as B.H., was recognized for his business leadership attributes as well as the countless hours and commitment he has given towards the future of this community. It was unanimously agreed that he has been a positive force behind almost every charitable and quality of life effort geared toward making our community the best it can be for all who live here. Upon graduation from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in English, B.H. taught English in both Chesterfield and Lancaster Counties in Virginia. He received his Doctorate of Law from the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the Editorial Board of the Law Review, and did graduate work in tax law at New York University. B.H. then accepted a position as clerk and attorney/advisor 12

for the Honorable William H. Quealy of the United States Tax Court in Washington, D.C. He also spent time practicing business and estate planning as well as business related federal litigation with the firm of Agelasto and Agelasto in Norfolk before returning to Lancaster in 1979. A founding member of the law firm Hubbard, Terry and Britt in Irvington, B.H. handles estate and business planning as well as real estate law matters. He manages to find time to be an active part of the community and has served on many boards including the Lancaster County Chapter of the American Heart Association, Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library, Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club, Rappahannock WestminsterCanterbury Foundation, the Lancaster County Lions Club, the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and Virginia Quality Life, Inc. He is a past Chairman of the Lancaster County Republican Committee.

Susan Cockrell W

hen Susan Cockrell’s not wearing one of her many hats in her job as Kilmarnock’s deputy town manager, she’s busy promoting the town and Lancaster County. And the spunky redhead is not just a behind-the-scenes motivator, she’s a hands-on worker. For all her volunteer efforts and her compassion for promoting Lancaster County as a tourist destination and a wonderful place to call home, Susan was chosen as the Lancaster by the Bay Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year for 2015. For the past five years, she’s been the face and the force behind the ever-growing Kandy for Kids event held each Halloween in Kilmarnock. Businesses remain open after hours as the town’s Main Street beckons costumed characters from across the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. Thousands come to town each year for the trick-or-treating event that has become so popular in part because of Susan’s efforts. In past years she’s been seen strolling Main Street as an Evil Queen, Spiderwoman or Day of the Dead character, passing out candy and hugs to children. “It’s one of my faves,” she said. “I love the event. It’s huge.” And it seems to grow bigger every year, as does the annual Kilmarnock Lighted Christmas Parade, which Susan also started chairing in 2012, when founding organizer Carroll Lee Ashburn retired. The parade, now limited to about 100 units, is also one of the most popular events held in Lancaster and draws parade watchers from across the region. It’s billed as Virginia’s largest lighted Christmas parade and Susan can be seen, not sitting behind a desk calling the shots for the event, but running up and down the parade route, directing the organized chaos.

“Really it runs so smoothly because of the way it was organized before I took over,” she said humbly. “I really learned so much from Carroll Lee.” Susan also helped organize the Northern Neck RiverRide from the fall of 2008 until the last year of the event in 2014. As an economic and tourism developer, she was instrumental in establishing the Virginia Oyster Trail and is involved in a “regional push” to promote Virginia Oyster Country and the Virginia’s River Realm branding initiative. Outside of Lancaster County, in neighboring Northumberland, Susan has worked on the restoration efforts at Shiloh School and is a member of the Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern Foundation. Susan moved to her family homestead in Heathsville in 2006 and

was hired by the Town of Kilmarnock as the community development strategist in 2007. She became Kilmarnock’s deputy manager in 2010. “The chamber is stronger than ever and the product is great,” said Susan. “I’m so humbly honored [to be selected as the volunteer of the year],” she said. “It was a wonderful, wonderful thing for me personally.” Susan is a past secretary and vice president of the Chamber. “Susan was a natural choice, with her hard work and genuine interest in the Chamber,” said chamber Executive Director Anne Paparella. “She brings so much to our community and is such a tireless volunteer for the Chamber, going above and beyond to make our key events a success.” ■

rom rock to Bach, there’s music of all varieties in Lancaster County. “This area has so much talent,” said James Justin Burke, the driving force in James Justin & Co, Pretty Heavy and several other music initiatives. He’s currently helping Lancaster by the Bay Chamber of Commerce executive director Anne Paparella organize Rhythm, Brews and BBQ June 25 at the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department Carnival Grounds on Waverly Avenue in Kilmarnock. This event will feature the local rock and roll band Pretty Heavy; Trongone, playing southern rock and soul and Americana jam; and Big Pay Back, a James Brown tribute band. “The Chamber is thrilled to bring such amazing talent to this event,” said Paparella. The event also will feature craft brews, macro brews for sale, and a variety of barbecue vendors. The fun will begin at 3 p.m. and conclude at 9 p.m. Early bird tickets are $30 each. Burke said he is lucky to have been raised here, where the arts, and especially music, has such a strong presence. Like most local musicians, he participated in the Lancaster public school band program. At such a young age, the musically inclined soak up so much, he said. “If not for that, I wouldn’t be here today,” said Burke. “Being in the band for eight years really taught me a lot about music and life, and of course, mom sang in the church choir and dad taught me the greatest music of all time,” he added. Music is flourishing now in the Northern Neck and it is a tremendous part of his life, continued Burke. He tours the East Coast with JJ & Co., featuring Bailey Horsley on banjo, Tom Propst on upright bass and Burke on guitar and vocals. The trio delivers rich and vibrant Americana. All the musicians in Pretty Heavy are from here, he continued. Horsley

plays keys, Bradley Walker plays drums, Ricky Carrillo plays bass and Burke plays guitar. The band is making a tremendous impact right out of the gate, said Burke. One thing the musicians in the area seem to have going for them is the time they have to pursue an art form—that’s really crucial, he said. He and other local musicians are among the regulars in the spotlight at Willaby’s on the Rappahannock, 327 Old Ferry Road, White Stone, where William Barnhardt offers Thursdays on the Rise and Friday Night Live. The Thursday format from 7 to 9 p.m. showcases emerging artists from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, said Barnhardt. It gives them an opportunity to go public, to be heard, to try new things, he said. The Friday shows from 7 to 10 p.m. feature talented, seasoned musicians from the Northern Neck, Virginia and the entire Mid-Atlantic region, he said. Barnhardt noted he loves all kinds of music and folks will find a variety from jazz and blues, to rock and bluegrass. As his restaurant has evolved, Friday Night Live has taken on a natural progression, he explained. He takes great pleasure in scouting bands to introduce to the community, said Barnhardt. The area has an extremely talented pool of musicians, he added. Variety in the spotlight extends throughout the community.

Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts ounded in 1986, the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts promotes the arts in the lower Northern Neck. Through its On Stage series, the RFA brings professional performers to the community and to area schools, reported president Peggy Stalnaker. In addition, RFA sponsors a number of programs that promote the arts and arts education in the community, with a special emphasis on programming that introduces students to the performing and visual arts. On Stage shows are presented in the Lancaster Middle School Theater, 191 School Street, Kilmarnock. A six-show season generally runs from early fall through spring. Recent performances have included the Virginia Symphony, BeauSoleil, Artie Shaw Orchestra, Jane Monheit, The Seldom Scene, the Kingston Trio, and the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin. On August 13, “get irie” with reggae favorite Stuck on a Name. On August 20, Southern Grace will conclude the series with gospel, traditional hymns and contemporary Christian music with an upbeat tempo. Northern Neck Orchestra he Northern Neck Orchestra (NNO) is a full-sized symphony orchestra based in Kilmarnock. Concerts often include compositions from Broadway shows and other scores. Many productions also include guest or member soloists. The NNO mission is to provide exposure to the orchestral repertoire through performances of high artistic quality; educate the community regarding the preservation and development of the musical arts; enable local musicians to rehearse and
