teeped in history from the banks of the Potomac River to the shores of the Rappahannock, the Northern Neck is the birthplace of three of the nation’s first five presidents and home to countless historical sites and museums. At the southern tip of the Neck is Lancaster County, home to the mother of our first president, Mary Ball Washington, who was born and spent most of her childhood at Epping Forest near Lively. Today, in Lancaster Courthouse, the Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library celebrates the county’s rich history at its separate museum and library and geneology buildings. More than 350 years of history is on display in the 1797 clerk’s office, 1821 jail and 1828 Lancaster House. The museum is a wonderful starting point for visitors on an historic trek through the county. To the north of Lancaster Courthouse, in the tiny waterfront village of Morattico, visitors will find a museum paying homage to those who have made a livelihood on the water. The Morattico Waterfront Museum, located in the former Morattico General Store at the end of Morattico Road, has on display the history of the village and tells the story in pictures, artifacts and oral histories of the life of a waterman. The importance of Lancaster County’s water heritage is also the focus of the Steamboat Era Museum in the town of Irvington, where the history of the steamboat and its effect on commerce, culture and social activities along small towns on the Bay is celebrated.

Historic Christ Church

The Kilmarnock Museum on Main Street in the heart of town focuses on the past and present of Kilmarnock, the hub of the county’s commercial activity. New to the museum this year is a Memorial Garden including plaques in honor and memory of many county residents. No visit to Lancaster for the history buff is complete without a trip to Historic Christ Church and the Carter Reception Center and Museum in Weems. Robert “King” Carter’s church, built in 1735, is a remarkably preserved Anglican parish church. Founded in the 1630s, Lancaster County offers history at nearly every turn. Waterfront villages are lined with Victorian homes and cottages, historic churches speckle the county’s back roads and museums telling the county’s history can be found in nearly every town. VOLUNTEER

Many students volunteer their time at the Northern Neck Middlesex Free Health Clinic.

n Lancaster County, volunteering is a way of life. The community “can do” spirit manifests itself in a number of activities designed to improve our quality of life and assist those in need. Among the volunteer opportunities are The River Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross which serves as the first responder in times of disaster, assists families in notifying members of the Armed Forces of family emergencies, conducts blood drives and provides education on matters of health and safety. The Chapter is always looking for people who want to be trained to assist at the next emergency, because even in the Northern Neck, hundreds of helping hands are needed to respond to natural disasters. The Northern Neck Food Bank serves as a vital link between sources of nutritious food and our neighbors in five counties. Under the visionary leadership of executive director Lance

Barton, the Food Bank has refocused its efforts on obtaining fresh, healthy food products so those it serves can receive nutritious produce and staples to improve and maintain their health. Today, a small staff and more than 700 volunteers harvest fresh produce from local farms, stock the Food Bank’s warehouse and transport items to more than two dozen food pantries where those in need receive the benefits of volunteers’ efforts. Lancaster County residents will turn out for the 2015 American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life being held this year on May 16. The combined Lancaster/Northumberland Relay will be held at Northumberland High School, and Lisa Goodall of the American Cancer Society says the event generates great excitement and awareness in the effort to find a cure for a disease that affects millions of Americans, many of them our friends

and neighbors. Goodall says volunteers are needed for planning and on race day. The Northern Neck Middlesex Free Health Clinic has been providing free health care services to the Northern Neck and Middlesex County since 1993. Since that time it has been able to serve over 11,000 individuals and provided over $60 million dollars in health care services. Volunteers work in the medical and dental clinics, as well as the pharmacy, and mental health services in an effort to drive down cost. The clinic also hosts well-woman clinics, group diabetic clinics, and healthy back clinics. Ask anyone associated with these groups and you’ll learn how important the contributions of volunteers are in making Lancaster County a great place to live, work and visit.

GOVERNMENT
