Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County
… and a whole lot more await you in Lancaster County. Situated in the heart of the Northern Neck, with superb museums and galleries, venues for live entertainment, thrilling outdoor life, and award-winning amenities, Lancaster County is the hub of activity in one of Virginia’s most historic regions. Visitors, retirees, business owners and seasonal homeowners will find everything they desire right here. You notice the difference as soon as you arrive. The traffic’s gone. The air is clean, with just a tang of salt to tingle your nostrils. Fields of corn and soybeans hug rural roadways. Creeks and rivers snake through the landscape. The Rappahannock River and the magnificent Chesapeake Bay shape the county’s southern and eastern coastlines. Vibrant villages with quaint shops and restaurants exude refined Southern hospitality and charm. You know right away why Captain John Smith called this a perfect place for people to live.
region. The Morattico Waterfront Museum chronicles life in a working watermen’s village. Of course there’s more than history to Lancaster. For starters, the County offers excellent recreation on the water, on the links, and in the parks. Our location provides quick and easy access to prime fishing grounds. Charters are available throughout the county and annual tournaments give fishing a competitive edge. For the sailor, several high profile regattas, including the Turkey Shoot Regatta, are based out of Lancaster’s many marinas.
Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library
Settled by the English in the 1630s, Lancaster County is home to intriguing historic sites that preserve and exhibit the area’s important history. Principal among these is Historic Christ Church. The best preserved of colonial Virginia’s Anglican parish churches, Historic Christ Church hosts a new exhibition gallery which provides a striking introduction to the church and surrounding area in bygone days. Another surviving colonial church, St. Mary’s Whitechapel, was built by an ancestor of President James Monroe with funds provided by the family of Mary Ball, whose father—grandfather to our first president—was among its leaders. In fact, Lancaster is the birthplace and childhood home of Mary Ball Washington, mother of George Washington. A stop by the museum named in her honor is worth the trip. The Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library has set out to preserve and honor the historic buildings of Lancaster Courthouse, the town nearest the place of her birth. In Irvington, the Steamboat Era Museum chronicles the days when steamboats navigated the Chesapeake and water transport was the principal means of travel to and from the

Golfers will enjoy top-notch courses. The Golden Eagle Golf Club and King Carter Golf Course, both open to the public, present challenges to golf enthusiasts from beginners to seasoned amateurs. There’s also much to explore on foot, bike, or even horseback, with excellent opportunities to keep naturalists on the move. The less adventuresome will enjoy a leisurely stroll through one of the area’s villages or towns. If all this activity makes you hungry or thirsty, don’t worry. One of Lancaster’s abundant restaurants is always ready to serve you fine gourmet cuisine or more casual fare if you prefer. You can tend to your thirst at one of Lancaster’s stops along the Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail. www.lancasterva.com

Visit Kilmarnock to explore several fine antiques shops featuring a wide array of styles and eras, with knowledgeable staff ready to assist you. Along Kilmarnock’s Main Street are restaurants and charming shops filled with clothing, jewelry, decorative accessories and more. While you’re downtown, stop by the Rappahannock Art League for a look at exhibits of works by local artists on display and for sale. Take the little ones to Kilmarnock’s children’s playground or stop by Scottie Yard, the Northern Neck’s only dog park. Just a few miles away in the village of Irvington you’ll find upscale shopping, a coffee and ice cream cafe, and delicious food. Be sure to visit the village’s bustling, open-air farmer’s market with local fruit and vegetables, herbs, seafood, flowers, baked goods and more, held on the Town Commons on the first Saturday of each month from May through December. Not far from Irvington, White Stone is home to restaurants that are favorites among locals and intriguing shops filled with items perfect for home decorating or gifts for family and friends. Visitors to Lively on the western edge of the county will be pleasantly surprised to find delicious homestyle food and great antiques deals. Don’t let the rural setting fool you. There’s plenty of sophistication in Lancaster, thanks to the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts, which supports arts education and programming and brings nationally recognized musicians to the area through its acclaimed “On Stage” series. The Northern Neck Symphony Orchestra, a full-sized orchestra based in Kilmarnock, performs two or three concerts annually. The Lancaster Players entertains regularly in its White Stone playhouse. Rappahannock Community College’s Kilmarnock Center offers a wide array of courses for anyone interested in getting a college degree or exploring new areas of interest. Break from the routine and recharge in the inspiring surroundings of Lancaster County, with its bounteous opportunities for leisure, learning, and laid-back living. Calendar of Events
Don't Miss... L
ancaster is always a great place to relax, but throughout the year its towns and villages are bustling with traditional community events and one-of-a-kind activities unique to the area. A vibrant arts scene, festivals, concerts, exhibits, farmer’s markets and more keep Lancaster hopping with activity and community spirit. You can fill your calendar with activities right here in the Northern Neck. In March, White Stone is home to the annual Rappahannock River Waterfowl Show. Considered one of the finest waterfowl art shows on the east coast, this event showcases all forms of waterfowl art including original paintings, prints, decoys, photography, and more. Springtime in Lancaster means Easter egg hunts and Historic Garden Week sponsored by the Garden Club of the Northern Neck. Be sure to catch the 2nd annual By the Bay Parade of Homes, too, a tour of unique home properties that feature the work of local craftsmen. Starting in May, the Irvington Farmer’s Market offers local, fresh goods and a variety of decorative and gift items brought in by craftsmen from along the eastern seaboard. While you’re filling out your calendar, don’t forget to mark down the annual Northern Neck Antiques Fair held under tents in Lively. The two-day event brings together more than 30 distinguished antiques dealers from the east coast. Held on Memorial Day weekend, the outdoor fair offers a choice selection of unique items. Lancaster’s small town charm is in full bloom in July with several classic events. Irvington salutes the red, white, and blue with a Fourth of July parade, Air Force band concert, and fireworks over Carters Creek. Later in the month, the whole family can experience old-time fun at Kilmarnock’s traditional Firemen’s Carnival, now in its 78th year. A highlight of late summer is the Bay Seafood Festival held at Belle Isle State Park. Tickets go fast for this popular seafood lover’s event. Throughout the fall, Lancaster hosts a wide variety of sporting activities including fishing tournaments, regattas, running events like Irvington’s Turkey Trot, and our regional bike ride aptly called Northern Neck RiverRide. Visitors in November will have a chance to experience regional wines, food, arts and ales at “TASTE” By the Bay. TASTE will replace the Annual Kilmarnock Wine Festival and will be hosted at the Tides Inn. The holiday season is celebrated with flair throughout the area with caroling, visits with Santa, and Christmas parades, highlighted by the 35th annual Kilmarnock Lighted Christmas Parade. Take a look at the calendar and plan your visit around one of the Northern Neck’s signature events. For all the latest event information, visit www.tlcva.com. 12

uys who enjoy weekends outdoors find Lancaster County the perfect destination. It’s easy for you and a group of friends to get out on the Bay for some fishing or enjoy one of our public golf courses. If you like being closer to the water, slide into a kayak or canoe and explore one of Lancaster’s picturesque creeks, or bring your own boat and launch from one of several spots in the area. The next morning, take in a hearty breakfast at one of the locals’ favorite eating spots and head to one of the county’s premiere golf courses. Whether you choose the par-71 at King Carter Golf Club or the par-72 at Golden Eagle, your time on the links will be memorable. Both courses offer challenges to players of all levels against a beautiful natural backdrop. At the end of the day, relax at the nineteenth hole at the club house or at one of the county’s many fine, informal restaurants. As you reflect on your days spent enjoying warm breezes, sparkling water and manicured greens amid woodland settings, you may decide to make Virginia’s Northern Neck your top getaway destination. 16

Or let your stress melt away as you cruise along one of Lancaster’s lovely waterways. The pace will be easy and carefree, allowing you to take in the scenery, wildlife, and classic waterfront homes. In the evening, let one of our restaurants prepare you a sumptuous dinner of freshly caught fish or crab cakes, enhanced with a bottle of excellent local wine. First, you’ll have to decide if you’re going to stay at the park to enjoy Belle Isle’s seven miles of shoreline, hiking and biking trails and all manner of boating. You’ll need your own hiking boots, but everything else—from boats to bikes— you can rent at the park. Or you might enjoy a day trip around the county. Take the short drive to the Steamboat Era Museum in Irvington, where the whole family will love the life-sized vignettes of a steamboat wheelhouse, stateroom, galley, dining room and a re-created wharf that provides a glimpse of a bygone era along the Chesapeake Bay. Next, head over to White Stone for a family-friendly lunch overlooking the Rappahannock River. Gourmet burgers and sandwiches prepare your crew for the next adventure, an afternoon at the beach. 20

ancaster is the perfect place to reacquaint your children with simple pursuits, offering the kind of family fun that you can’t get just anywhere. First, there’s the chance for adventure on or near the water. The big, beautiful Chesapeake Bay and Rappahannock River provide the perfect setting for you and your family to swim or enjoy jet skiing, waterskiing, tubing, kayaking, sailing and canoeing. Not an expert in water sports? Don’t worry. Several area camps and yacht clubs offer sailing lessons. Belle Isle State Park hosts canoe and kayak excursions and boat rentals. You can launch your kayak at the launch at Windmill Point. Westland Beach is an excellent spot for water sports. There is plenty of fun off the water too. One special highlight in late July that is always a hit with kids is the annual Kilmarnock Firemen’s Carnival. This old-fashioned carnival features a Ferris wheel, water dunk tank, cotton candy, funnel cakes and nightly bingo. At any time when children are ready to stretch their legs, let them enjoy one of the area playgrounds, which are within walking distance to shops and restaurants. Or take them for ice cream at the Country Cottage in White Stone. Drop by to see a ball game at Dream Fields outside Kilmarnock, or head over to River Lanes & Grill for some indoor family fun. Summer activities, including a number of camps, abound in Lancaster. The Lancaster Community Library hosts reading programs and events for all ages. Kids can explore the arts in workshops and camps through the Rappahannock Art League. Both the Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Neck and the Northern Neck Family YMCA offer a wide range of activities for children, from sports and swimming to leadership development. So whether you’re planning to spend a weekend or the whole summer, Lancaster has great memory-making fun that will thrill your children.

… from your base in Lancaster County. Get a lesson in history, taste the region’s signature food and drink, or explore traditional Northern Neck occupations at sites within easy driving distance of your accommodations in Lancaster. Just an easy hour’s ride by car brings you to Stratford Hall, home of the Lee family and birthplace of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Twenty minutes farther brings you to the George Washington Birthplace National Monument, where George Washington was born on a farm along the banks of Pope’s Creek. On summer weekends, visitors can continue on to Colonial Beach to visit the birthplace of our fifth president, James Monroe. Remember to bring a picnic or boxed lunch from one of Kilmarnock’s eateries as there are picnicking facilities at all three of these locations. If getting some hands-on “farming” sounds intriguing, pick fruit at the Westmoreland Berry Farm near Colonial Beach. Sample the taste of the region’s unique wines at twelve area vineyards along the Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail. Drive over to Urbanna, located in Middlesex County across the Rappahannock, to discover another riverside village with local shopping, an acclaimed oyster festival in November and a lighted boat parade and home tours during the Christmas season. From late spring through fall, see how agriculture shaped the region’s economy by visiting the Northern Neck Farm Museum outside Heathsville. Learn about the region’s maritime commerce and the life of local watermen at the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum. Plan a stroll in Reedville to see the Victorian homes, several of which are open for tours at Christmas. From Reedville, take a day trip to Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay, a unique community preserving the lifestyle of Chesapeake Bay settlers from years gone by. For all this and more, Lancaster is your starting point.

Food
Savor the Local Fare
I
f you get up early and head down to the Rappahannock or the Corrotoman at the southern edge of Lancaster County, you might see them out on the water. Long white boats, cabins seemingly pushed up against the bow, a long, open deck behind with short sides that make it easy for local watermen to harvest the bounty that makes this region special: locally grown oysters, succulent mollusks that have been a staple of locals’ diet since the days when Native Americans built small villages along the water’s edge. Picked from the water at the peak point of ripeness, fresh oysters are packaged and distributed to Lancaster County restaurants by local firms like Kellum’s in Weems, Cap’n Red’s in Kilmarnock or Rappahannock River Oysters in nearby Topping. At the hands of chefs who specialize in preparing local fare in traditional or innovative ways, these plump morsels from the salty waters of the region form the centerpiece of signature dishes that let you know why our oysters are prized around the country. 28
Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County
Local oysters are a treat no matter how you eat them. Have them as an appetizer with a spicy dipping sauce. Get them fried and served in a po’boy sandwich where a crisp baguette accents their salty tang. Order them as part of a seafood platter with crab cakes. Get a Caesar salad topped with fried oysters for a truly unique taste experience. Whether you prefer an elegant three-course meal at the Tides Inn or Nate’s Trick Dog Café, a simple home-style dinner at Lee’s, or a sandwich at the Car Wash Café, you’ll want to sample dishes prepared with oysters that were harvested within days, perhaps hours, of making it to your plate. What’s more, area restaurants often feature other superb seafood choices made with crabs and fish caught just a few miles from where they’re served. Stop in at the Sandpiper, a local favorite in White Stone. Enjoy views of the Chesapeake Bay at Merroir’s in Topping, where owners of the Rapahannock Oyster Company offer seafood fare from waters you can see from the restaurant’s deck.
Craving a serving of fresh corn-on-the-cob or a fresh tasty salad made with ripe tomatoes? You’re in for a treat, as many local restaurants get their produce from farms in Lancaster County or nearby communities. There’s nothing like biting into a cucumber or tomato that was on the vine only a day or two before it’s served. Local growers take great pride in supplying fresh, wholesome produce to their neighbors’ establishments. So be sure to ask “What’s in season?” and treat yourself to the best the area has to offer. For a truly exquisite experience, order a local wine with your meal. Several area restaurants feature wines from our two local vineyards, The Dog and Oyster in Irvington and Good Luck Cellars in Kilmarnock. The sandy soil and nearby water source make the region a great place to grow grapes. Your first glass will let you know why these wines are award winners. Both vineyards have tasting rooms on the premises, where you can sample reds, whites and excellent blends certain to please even the most discriminating connoisseur. Purchase a bottle – or two – to enjoy when you return home. If you want to put some local delicacies on your own table, plan to visit the Irvington Farmer’s Market, where vendors from the area offer an array of fresh, in-season produce sure to please your palate. You can also get fresh Rappahannock River oysters at Tri-Star in Kilmarnock, a local favorite for grocery shopping. The nationally acclaimed Rappahannock River Oyster Company recently opened
a retail outlet at its main location in Topping. Several other retail outlets carry fresh local oysters in containers of varying sizes. Picking up a basket of fresh corn or tomatoes or squash, a bottle of local wine and a quart jar of fresh oysters lets you extend your Lancaster experience just a bit longer – and almost certainly guarantees a return visit.

My Home Town Louise Jesse

Local Perspectives
f you wonder what’s special about life in Lancaster County, ask someone who lives and works here. But give yourself plenty of time for the answer, because our neighbors always have a lot of good things to say about this special place. Caroline and Melvin Veney, owners of Veney Heating & Air Conditioning, are what locals call “born heres.” They grew up in Lancaster County and attended Lancaster High School. Melvin learned the heating and air conditioning trade while in the military, and when his hitch was up the Veneys returned to Lancaster County. Caroline and Melvin have been working here for thirty-two years. Today their three sons are involved in the business as well. Like most independent business owners, the Veneys work hard to satisfy customers. “When you own your own company, you have to have a strong work ethic because success is all on you,” Caroline says. But they love living and working in Lancaster County, where their business gives them a chance to meet newcomers who are relocating to the area. “These folks are among the nicest people in the world,” Caroline says. 32
Visitors & Business Guide to Lancaster County
Louise Jesse, another “born here,” traces her roots back to the family of Mary Ball Washington, mother of the first president. Jesse runs Epping Forest Antiques, a business started sixty years ago by her grandparents. “My grandmother created the business in the dining room at Epping Forest Plantation,” she says proudly. Jesse grew up at Epping Forest and remembers traveling with her parents around the country to visit antiques auctions. Today, her Epping Forest Antiques is located on Highway 3 in Lively. Jesse travels the country to find treasures for her store, yet she wouldn’t think of relocating. “I’ve never lived anywhere else and never wanted to.” Lancaster Community Library Director Lindsy Gardner, a “come here” from Alabama, has been impressed with the warm welcome she received from the people of Lancaster County and their willingness to support the library. “Since the library opened in 1961 in a small house on School Street in Kilmarnock, we’ve evolved into a real community center. Our computers are used by students doing research and jobseekers looking to marry up their credentials with firms that are hiring. Our children’s programs are always filled, often
with grandchildren visiting the area or youngsters whose parents are spending their vacations in the Northern Neck.” The Library makes it possible for Lancaster’s residents to stay connected with the wider world even if they don’t have technology at home. Another reason for locals to feel proud is Rappahannock General Hospital, says president and CEO James Holmes Jr. “We opened our doors thirty-five years ago and haven’t stopped growing since.” Today the hospital and its affiliates in Rappahannock Health system offer a wide array of services not normally found in small rural communities: emergency care, services for heart and lung patients, surgery, mental health, and pediatrics, as well as a cancer treatment and education center, home health services and two urgent care facilities. The largest employer in the county, RGH is home to more than 500 physicians, allied health professionals and staff known for donating their talents to community organizations and the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic. Holmes says, “We can do all this because we receive tremendous support from our community. Their continuing assistance is a testament to the determination of people in our region to make their community a great place to live.”

Get Closer to Nature The trail at Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve leads to a beautiful view of the bay.
f your idea of getting away for the weekend means getting back to nature, you’ll find ample opportunity in and around Lancaster County. Sparkling creeks and marshy wetlands extend like fingers from the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay into farmlands cultivated for nearly four hundred years. Ribbons of hardwoods and conifers offer shelter for hundreds of species of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. It’s a landscape best appreciated up close. Start by hiking one or all of the pathways at the Hickory Hollow Trail west of Kilmarnock. Ten interconnected trails wander through variegated woodlands and down to the edge of inland marshes. The area is a favorite spot for birding, and detailed signs describing the species of trees, shrubs and wildflowers are scattered along the trails. A walk through Belle Isle State Park near Morattico is like a journey back in time. Roads and trails take you past cornfields and old barns that remind you of the Northern Neck’s farming heritage. Veer off toward Deep Creek for a view of the Rappahannock River, where you are likely to spot migratory waterfowl including geese, ducks, egrets and herons, and families of osprey that make the river home during the summers. Be sure to scan the skies, as you may be rewarded by the sight of a hawk or a bald eagle soaring above the treetops. If you’re adventuresome, rent a kayak or canoe and get a breathtaking view of Mulberry Creek and the Rappahannock River shoreline. Prefer a shorter trail? Check out Baylor Park Nature Trail in Kilmarnock. The half-mile path along Norris Pond provides a serene retreat where beautiful natural scenery and an occasional glimpse of wildlife will leave you relaxed and refreshed. Or amble down the half-mile Chesapeake Trail, another path west of Kilmarnock maintained by the Northern Neck Audubon Society for those who enjoy natural landscapes. If hiking along the beach is your passion, travel north from Kilmarnock to Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve or nearby Dameron Marsh. Pristine beaches stretch along the Chesapeake Bay, accessible by trails through verdant tidal wetlands teeming with bird and insect life. With a little luck you’ll see a pelican gliding over the waters or a school of porpoises cavorting in the Bay. Want to get even closer to the water? Put in your kayak at the public launch at Windmill Point and paddle out into the Rappahannock or along the creeks at the eastern end of the county. Be sure to take a camera. You’ll want to capture the sights that will make your visit to Lancaster one to remember. www.lancasterva.com
