Manchester

Hello lovely readers! Well it’s been a funny start to 2010 with a deluge of snow being dumped on the city centre and pretty much bringing life to a halt! I’ve never seen Market Street shut due to adverse weather conditions but low and behold, the snow sent everyone into hibernation. Looking out of the office window, the snow seems to have melted and life in Manchester carries on. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and whether a singleton or part of a couple, see February as a month of celebrating the ones you care about. In this month’s magazine we give you the lowdown on where to celebrate valentine’s and also some quirky gift ideas. Large socials pick back up this month with our pub quiz at the English Lounge on February 17th and we are doing our first ever readership survey so log onto www.largemanchester.com and tell us all about you. We have an amazing day out in Manchester up for grabs including gig tickets, cocktails at Hard Rock Cafe and a skydiving experience at Airkix. Sending Large Love! Calendar Girls at The Lowry... After triumphing in the West End, the box office hit returns to The Lowry starring Lynda Bellingham, Manchester girl Gemma Atkinson, Letita Dean and Hannah Waterman. This is a tear jerking but comedy-packed story of a group of ordinary women, all members of a very ordinary Yorkshire Women’s Institute, sparking a global phenomenon by persuading one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference! As interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves revealing more than they’d ever planned. Calendar Girls is on from 9th-20th February at The Lowry. Don’t Buy This Man a Pint... Whilst many New Year’s Resolutions are aimed at drinking less alcohol or giving it up for a month, one Manchester man has decided to go the whole way and not drink a drop of alcohol for a whole year! Mark Bowness was so fed up of weekend hangovers and spending too much money on booze that he decided to do something about it. Mark is using all the time he would normally spend on alcohol to push his wellbeing to the max, and the money he would have spent is

Apart from fundraising, he’ll be trying everything - martial arts, kayaking, snowboarding, exploring spirituality, learning a language, cooking and much more. Mark is appealing to the Manchester public to help him. Whether you are a spiritual leader, or personal trainer, or members of the public on a similar mission then he wants to hear from you. So here’s a photo of Mark and if you see him and his will power is wilting, then don’t buy him a pint. He’s recording his 12 month journey at: www.dontbuythismanapint.com

The charity looks after children in recently earthquake-hit Haiti. Mark is hoping to find 500 people who will give up 6 cans of beer or 4 bottles of wine per month, and instead use that money to sponsor a village, paying £20 per month for 12 months, raising £120,000 for the charity.

Brit Art

NEW TO MANCHESTER...

Brit Art is a new gallery that’s set to light up the Manchester art scene. The gallery houses original, iconic art from local designers. Legendary photographer Karen McBride is one such artist whose memorable musical photography will be available for purchase including the Liam Gallagher snap that won her so many prestigious awards. There’s a Manchester act filled jukebox installed, whereby you choose which songs you would like piped throughout the three storey building. Brit Art is a fun, fresh take on art - a far cry from the stuffy atmosphere you meet in many of its counterparts. Jasper Scholtes is just one of the up and coming artists exhibiting in the gallery and his pop-art inspired work is truly breathtaking. There’s also furniture on display from Bob Campbell AKA ‘Stig’ who makes tables and chairs from reclaimed machinery, pretty groundbreaking stuff! Excitingly they are also opening up the space to new artists who want to showcase their work. If you’re interested then email: britartgallery@ymail.com. Prices are really reasonable and start from £100, for an original piece of iconic art work. Brit Art Gallery, 58 Port Street, Manchester, M1 2EQ. 0161 237 3155

Rosso

NEW TO MANCHESTER...

Yet another Italian restaurant has opened in Manchester, however Rosso, housed in a lavish 114 year old building, says its offering is that of simple sophistication. Situated at the top of King Street (you can’t really get a more prestigious Manchester postcode!), on the former Karim’s site, Rosso has cost £1.5 million to refurbish. It’s owned by Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand and Adam Karim. We wanted to leave this one to settle in over Christmas and after scouting around, it seems feedback is pretty good, with most reviews rating the food, service and atmosphere fairly highly. The owners are aiming to make the bar area a focal point on the city centre circuit whilst continuing to turn out quality food in historical surroundings. It seats 130 people and weekends are already booked up so here’s hoping this is yet another high-quality restaurant to add to the league we already have in the city, albeit one that doesn’t start wilting once the big bang opening period is behind them. Matt Brereton-Patel has just positioned himself on the Large radar as most probably the best personal trainer in Manchester. He’s from a pharmaceutical and biological background, meaning he knows as much about keeping in shape as what happens inside your body. Matt’s aim is not only to put you through your paces physically, but it’s also what goes on ‘upstairs’ that’s as important as boosting health.

It’s all about the natural, the organic and harmony in the body. Sounds a little wacky but it really does work. It isn’t rocket science to work out that to look good on the outside; you have to sort the inside out first. Matt’s worked with everyone from elite athletes to those carrying serious weight and everyone in between. So he knows how to inspire and challenge. The most fundamental point of the programme is that he’s honest with you. It’s going to be hard work but what’s the point in lying to you and you not getting the result you were expecting?

It’s about meeting you half way, not treating you like you’re on a factory production line. You may need a complete holistic makeover For more information on Matt visit and 3D Personal Training can www.3dpersonaltraining.co.uk make that happen. or email Matt on matt@3dpts.com

People tend to forget about signs. But signs are the links between a building and its visitors, communicating everything from names, prices and corporate identities to directions, instructions and warnings.

We know the importance of good signage because we've been supplying it for over 20 years. We know that design is only as good as performance and that the choice of materials is dependent upon budget and usage, not just now, but in the future. It's an abundance of knowledge applied across an entire signage service that starts with a brief at a meeting and includes site surveys, design, artwork, manufacture, installation and maintenance. A sign company that does more than just supply signs? That's a company people shouldn't forget.

Two of the freshest bands to come out of the city are Delphic and Hurts – here’s all you need to know.

Delphic These Manchester lads don’t need much introducing after recently performing with Jools Holland and finding themselves in the BBC’s Sound of 2010 list. Delphic are set to make 2010 their year. The three piece released their debut album ‘Acolyte’ on 11th January and they have been described by Q Magazine as “A New Order for the 21st Century.” Delphic are an awesome live act, mixing guitars with euphoric electronica. The band members are eager to stress that they are far removed

from the ‘Madchester’ scene; their music is indie-rave, fuelled with the sounds of synthesisers, guitars and keyboards. The band formed back in 2007 and it’s clear to see influences of New Order even the Pet Shop Boys in their futuristic sounds rather than the guitar riffs we’ve become used to from Manchester bands of late. They’ve just completed a UK tour last month and are taking their unique sounds to European shores to see how it fares. They say they want their gigs to be like raves, raves that would fill warehouses – we can’t wait for that one! www.delphic.cc

Hurts Hurts came fourth on the BBC’s Sounds of 2010 list - pretty impressive for two guys from Manchester who have played very few gigs (their first ones are this month) and are yet to release an album but Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson seem to be onto something that music industry bods are interested in. Anderson and Hutchcraft met outside a Manchester nightclub just before Christmas 2005. Their friends were having a punch-up and the two of them got talking about music. Over the subsequent year they communicated only via the internet from their homes in Salford and Longsight. Anderson sent backing tracks. Hutchcraft sent back vocals and so resulted in a formidable partner. Adam and Theo have been in a previous band ‘Daggers’ who not long ago supported Gary Newman, but in their current form, Hurts have been going for nearly nine months now and are making serious waves through the music industry.

The boys are meticulously turned out, slick and dapper almost, and are influenced by the slow disco style ever present in European music. Holding their hands up, the duo admit that their music is pop and explain that nothing beats a good pop song - but this is dark and moody pop. Adam and Theo represent two opposites that come together to make a good match, it’s about two extremes which represent

their very different personalities. Anderson, the calculating visionary. Hutchcraft, the born pop-star. Their sound is described as electro-pop, which is clear from their recent release ‘Blood, Tears and Gold.’ Keep your eyes peeled about town for gigs by the pair and be part of something small for now but set to spread like wildfire in 2010. www.informationhurts.com

TUMMY RUMBLES...

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, is it time to go all out and pile on the slush or are you looking to take that special someone on a more, alternative kind of date? Large has scoured around and reviewed two restaurants for Valentine’s Day at different ends of the spectrum.

Albert’s Shed

You might overlook Albert’s Shed (and its sister venue Duke’s 92) as a summer time hang-out but, ticking away all year round, Albert’s Shed often finds itself on Manchester’s top restaurants list. The place is steeped in history and the land is still independently owned by the Ramsbottom family. The restaurant is duly named after it being Uncle Albert’s work shed for many a year. If you’re really looking to spoil on Valentine’s Day then Champagne starts at £41.00. For Valentine’s night the restaurant will be running a speciality menu for £35 per head. Add an extra £10 to that for chocolates and a rose on your table for the gushing amongst you. In terms of decor, it’s chic with lots of wooden decoration and in

Albert’s Shed

Large rating – 8/10 fitting with the location, fantastic imagery of the surrounding area; railway arches and canals. The menu is packed full of hearty favourites with a contemporary twist. We tried the Smoked haddock and gruyere fish cakes (£5.50) and a sharing Garlic bread (£3.00) to start with. The garlic bread wasn’t out of the ordinary but in fairness Garlic bread isn’t particularly sexy although nice to share. The fish cakes were fresh tasting, packed full of gruyere mixed with potato which was delicious. The antipasti sharing platter (£12.00) of vegetable and hallumi skewers, mixed meats, goats

cheese and tomato crostinis, calamari and sunblushed tomato salad would be another good choice for a sharing starter. Moving onto mains and wanting to try something a little more alternative, my guest opted for Wild rabbit gnocchi in a cream, white wine and pancetta sauce (£8.50). The pancetta was really present in the sauce, resulting in a smokey, almost paprika taste. It was very rich which may not be to everyone’s taste as Rabbit does tend to have quite a ‘gamey’ flavour to it. For my main I went for Pot roast beef, brisket cooked served with rich gravy (£13.50). At Albert’s

Shed, each main comes with a choice of two side dishes that you choose, meaning that the bill doesn’t get out of hand once you add in a few side options. True to its description, the gravy was very rich and delicious. For sides, the savoy cabbage and bacon would definitely be recommended. There wasn’t much room for dessert however we were tempted by Albert’s Ice Cream Sundae (£5.00) with brandy soaked pannettone cake at the bottom (if you manage to get that far down!). simple, yet perfect. Our server also recommended the Warm chocolate pot (£5.00) which is served with vanilla ice cream and once you break the shell, you meet the gooey centre. It’s divine but again extremely rich so for the chocoholics it’s a must but maybe a bit heavy after a full meal. The menu at Albert Shed includes fish dishes, meat dishes, pizzas and risottos so sure to meet any taste. The staff are exceptional. It’s a very slick and professional service you’ll get here and a great choice if you want to hold hands and gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes over the table.

TUMMY RUMBLES...

The Gallery @ G Casino

2 Ramsgate St, Manchester. M8 9SG Large Rating 8/10

The Gallery Not an obvious choice, and perhaps you may not know what lies inside the walls of G Casino, but if for example you’re only a few dates into a new relationship and don’t want to look too soppy, or you just fancy more of a fun night out this Valentine’s day, then G Casino is a great spot for a delicious meal and then a night of excitement. Situated on Bury New Road and part of the Grovesnor group, G Casino is a hive of gaming and entertainment with a couple of bars and a pretty impressive restaurant thrown into the mix. Be warned, you will need to take ID to gain entry.

We’re not talking intimate and cosy, we’re talking bright lights and cheers from around the room but this is a really cool choice for Valentine’s dates that you may not want to be too intense. The Gallery restaurant has a fantastic menu with touches of every cuisine. To start with we were presented with a hot bread basket, always nice to break the ice and settle any date nerves! I opted for the Wild mushroom bruschetta (£4.95) which was really beautiful and comparatively matched any Italian restaurant in the city centre. My guest went for the Grilled goat’s cheese salad with honeyed apricots (£4.45) again, top notch

There’s so much to choose from on the menu including steaks from the chargrill, pizzas, risotto and pasta. We decided to share a dessert of Carpaccio of fresh pineapple with champagne sorbet (£3.45) which was light, refreshing and a tasty finale to a fantastic dinner. The staff are great – warm and welcoming, ready to recommend in times of uncertainty. It’s an unusual choice for Valentine’s day but the atmosphere inside is buzzing. You won’t be short of discussion topics as there’s so much going on in the venue. You and your date can tuck into a tasty meal and bottle of wine then take to the tables for a bit of a flutter. If you go on one of their entertainment nights, you’ll even have a live stage show to keep you entertained.

for taste and presentation however a little too heavy on the vinaigrette dressing - a little over powering. Other starters include Coconut fried shrimp (£5.25) and Stilton, pear and walnut salad (£4.25). Moving onto mains, on the server’s recommendation, my guest went for Fillets of seabass (£12.95) served with crushed potatoes and Mediterranean vegetables. It was superbly presented, really tasty and fresh. I opted for Breast of chicken stuffed with spinach and mozzarella, wrapped in prosciutto, served with a tomato cream sauce, sautéed potatoes and vegetables (£8.95). The price of the dish is such good value for the high standard of the food. Again, beautifully presented, and the dish wasn’t too big - a bonus as the chicken with mozzarella and prosciutto was rich. It was really delicious, with each ingredient complimenting the next.

FASHION FORWARD...

Striding into Harvey Nichols this spring/summer 2010 is Lara Bohnic’s very first shoe collection. Lara is one of the most innovative and exciting designers around today, and has been design consultant to uber-elite brand Cartier since 2001. Lara can proudly boast an impressive portfolio of working with the greater and good in the fashion industry; Gucci, Lanvin and Julian McDonald to name but a few. The majority of her work lies in the jewellery domain, fusing modern styles with classical design to achieve timelessly elegant pieces. The next step was a range of accessories including handbags and sunglasses. Lara Bohnic was nominated for Accessory Designer of the Year Award by the British Fashion Council in 2008, and awarded Jewellery Designer of the Year by Elle Style Awards in February 2009. 2010 sees Lara’s step into footwear with the launch of two collections: Eclipse and Seventh Seal. Lara controversially sees the hard-

hitting recession of late as an ideal opportunity to launch yet another arm of her range, stating that “in these times of doom and gloom people want something more special than ever.” It’s certainly trying to put a positive spin on things and I’m not sure if this is true for most of us but it certainly does make you feel a million dollars knowing you possess such a special item. The Eclipse collection consists of three styles, inspired by Lara’s signature Lunar Eclipse Bag. Think strappy and sexy with an 11cm heel.

MANCHESTER STREET STYLE...

Winter street style has been dominated by accessories. Where once they were simply colourful props used to supplement an outfit, in December, with the plummeting temperatures, accessories became a necessity and not just among the style savvy. Sheepskin coats took centre stage; for luxury combined with irrefutable comfort, knitwear rebelled from its traditional role of cosy practical wear, stepping out of its comfort zone dripping in two tone quirky prints. And for those who dared to share, fingerless gloves became a key feature, despite the chilly consequences. Heavy winter Knits where drenched in Autumnal tones; a soft backdrop to vibrant scarves, snoods, gloves and hats. For these staple piece’s colour saw no boundaries, with violet, lime and magenta popular choices. Colour was a tool with which to rework a dull, murky palette; easy and effortless. Fur trims, feathers and metallic embellishments all contributed to enhance traditional winter accessories, and the result, street style got sexy. Natalie Shaw

Manchester Dogs’ Home It’s an age old tale, more animals get abandoned at this time of year as the novelty of a pet as a Christmas present wears off. Manchester Dogs’ Home is one of the city’s longest-established charities. Serving all of Greater Manchester and parts of Lancashire, the Home has capacity for around 600 dogs at any one time, as well as an onsite veterinary team. 96% of dogs taken in by the Dogs’ Home are either reunited with their owners or re-homed.

A MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE...

Hi All My team has been working hard through the festive period and into the New Year to keep the city safe for all its residents, workers and visitors. We have just completed our Christmas operation aptly named Op Frost in the light of the recent weather we have been having. In addition to patrolling with our partners, a team of officers and PCSOs also displayed crime prevention stands at some of the busy shopping areas in the city to give out crime prevention advice and information about how to improve home security. A special addition to our team this year was our resident town crier who went out into the city centre to deliver safety messages.

The entire operation, that ended at the beginning of January, yielded some fantastic results with 311 people being stopped and spoken to or searched and 70 people being processed for criminal offences. Our main concern was crime prevention and making sure people knew how to keep themselves and their property safe and we saw some tremendous results, there was a 78% drop in theft, a 90% drop in theft from motor vehicles and an 85% drop in miscellaneous thefts compared to last year, this is a fantastic result for those that live, work and socialise in Manchester. My team are now planning to step
