Hello one and all, I need to start this month’s editor’s letter with a huge thank you to every one of you reading this. Large is celebrating its first birthday this month and from humble beginnings, we’re delighted to be going from strength to strength and are excited for all the plans we have for Large this year. A very special thanks also needs to go to our advertisers who have been so supportive to us since day one. As always, we’re keen to meet exciting characters and companies in Manchester so if you fall into this category then get in touch. April marks a nice change in the city centre with more of the outdoor space being filled and the Manchester public being treated to a whole range of amazing festivals. We’re delighted to be working with many local festivals and we’ll be filling these pages with what’s going on in the coming months. Whilst I’m writing this, the sun is shining (how long for is anyone’s guess!) but I sure hope this means a turn for the better weather-wise. Making snow angels is fun but whacking on sunglasses and putting the hat and scarf back into hibernation is much better! It’s A Dogs Life The mysterious ‘Black Dog’, the namesake of Black Dog Ballroom in the Northern Quarter has been exclusively revealed as three-month old Bruce, a Patterdale Terrier who has taken up residence in the bar as a general dogsbody and supervisor. Bruce is no slacker, he works every day from 10am till 6pm with a wide range of responsibilities including keeping the owners in check and greeting daytime customers. His favourite pastime is chasing a mop so Bruce also supervises the cleaning every morning. blackdogballroom.co.uk
Manc Talking Online site for pretty much everything, gumtree.com has reported a huge surge in Mancunians searching for language courses and also language swapping sessions since the end of 2009. In return for coaching lessons in English, savvy Mancunians are being taught the wonders of Chinese, Punjabi and Polish. It’s the cheap and effective way of getting first-hand experience in learning new languages. Here’s hoping the expressions ‘R’Kid’, ‘Mint!’ and ‘Nowt’ soon are heard in many a conversation across the globe!

Matthew Comer at Urban Outfitters
Matthew Comer presents his photographic exhibition ‘Rooftops and WaterTowers’ at Urban Outfitters until 1st July. The pieces represent a journey through the rooftops of Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York. Matthew’s background is in fashion and music photography having photographed for luxury fashion brands and bands such as N*E*R*D and The Streets. Longing for a more personal project, he flew to America, jumped in a car and drove 11,000 miles from East to West photographing on-route. ‘Rooftops and WaterTowers’ makes up a bigger collection, aptly named ‘On the Road’ of all Matthew’s American photographs. In exciting developments, Matthew will be taking the exhibition to the U.S. this summer to showcase across the pond. www.matthew-comer.com Urban Outfitters Market Street Manchester

Dave Haslam Up Close and Personal ‘A Close Up With…’, is a new series of live events hosted by legendary Hacienda DJ and writer Dave Haslam. If you’ve ever wanted the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the musical, artistic and literary greats from modern times then watch this man carefully. Held at The Green Room, the event is described by Dave as a chance to hear a unique, never to be repeated conversation with himself and his guests based on their life and work. The series kicks
off with former Dexy’s Midnight Runners frontman Kevin Rowland and is followed by local lad Mark E Smith. Both guests promise a good evening and these musical mavericks with uncompromised opinions are going to be anything but boring. Haslam has more exciting names lined up for later in the year so if you miss the first two guests you should definitely make an effort to get to The Green Room when he announces his line up. www.davehaslam.com

Manor Spa For ladies (and gents) who enjoy a non-invasive nip/tuck, then Manor Spa has just opened over in Sale. It also houses Manor Dental, an ultra high-tech dental clinic, but the spa side of the clinic offers a range of treatments suitable for those who want a little tweak. The spa is uberslick with lush interiors and top-ofthe-range equipment. The peels they have on offer are administered by doctors and start with treating the skin from the inside out which, when you think about it, makes sense. The peels treat acne, stretch marks, aging skin, sun damage and wrinkles.
Enhancements including Botox start from £175. Manor Spa is currently the only Spa in Manchester to have the Soprano XL – which loosely translates as pain-free (!!) hair removal. All laser and IPL treatments hurt - it’s a similar feel to an elastic band being flicked against your skinbut whilst the Soprano is still very powerful, it works by removing the hair without pain and feels just like a massage! 216 Washway Road Sale, Cheshire M33 4RA www.manordentists.co.uk
A Deranged Literary Romp Discombobulated Local boy and music insider Simon Morrison is uncovering a few secrets in his new book Discombobulated. Described as a “A deranged literary romp through some of the planet’s finest gutters and discos…”, the book features tales of high living and international low-cost slumming. Simon has gone raving in Ibiza with Judith Chalmers, been deported from Russia, travelled
from white heights of the Alps to the lowest of low-slung gutters in Brazil and still picked himself up in time to have a cup of tea with Take That back in Stockport. Collected together for the first time the stories are grouped into happy-hour bars, travel, celebrity, music, pop culture, politics and the varied wonders of inebriation… with somewhat wonky results! Shaped By War Imperial War Museum North presents the largest ever UK exhibition about the life and work of Don McCullin, one of the world’s most acclaimed photographers, to mark his 75th year. Many of the items are on public display for the very first time. For more than 50 years, McCullin’s images have shaped our awareness of modern conflict and its consequences. This unique collaboration between McCullin and the Imperial War Museum includes over 200 photographs, objects, magazines and personal memorabilia, and shows how war has shaped the life of this exceptional British photographer and those across the globe over the last half-century. The exhibition is on until 13th June.
French Market in Chorlton 15th-18th April Fancy a little ‘ooh la la’ in your life? Then head out to Chorlton and visit the special French Market in the town centre. The markets are piled high with French food and fashion and Chorlton is a great spot for a bit of suburban browsing. The market will delight food lovers everywhere, offering speciality cheeses, sausages, fresh baguettes, meats, olives, spices and preserves. Be drawn in by the smell of the delicious and tempting pastries on offer and don’t forget your beret – the stalls are also a great place to freshen up on French fashions.
Aside from the religious sentiments of Easter, the real reason most of us look forward to it is to overindulge in Easter Eggs. Based out in Ramsbottom, the Chocolate Café was set up two years ago by Paul Morris. The cafe is inspired by the French obsession for quality produce and the café certainly brightens and puts a twist on the generic café culture in the UK. Ramsbottom is just 15 miles north of Manchester and has become somewhat of a ‘foodie’ hotspot, with the famous Ramsons and new highly acclaimed restaurant Sanmini’s - both of which are mentioned in the Good Food Guide 2010. The café is well worth a visit and especially for Easter, Paul
has designed the chocolate pizza, a decadent alternative to the Easter egg with a base of Belgian chocolate and a variety of chocolate toppings you can choose from (six inch pizza with three toppings - £6.95 or Nine inch pizza with three toppings - £9.95). There’s even an online store if you can’t make it out to Ramsbottom. If you’ve an appetite for fine food and wine then The Chocolate Café also hosts gourmet events with expert chocolatiers, tops chefs and leading independent wine retailers, meaning you can combine food, drink and of course, chocolate. Blue Parrot Bar and Grille New eatery Blue Parrot has been slowly simmering away as a hidden gem since it opened in December. Now they are through the manic launch period, we headed along to try out their lunch menu. It’s a great spot not only for lunches but also for evening meals, dropping in for drinks or even just for coffee and cake. The lunch express menu (12-3pm Monday to Friday) is fantastic value. Choose from seven meals for just £5.95. The Grilled chicken and mozzarella wrap with sun blushed tomatoes and fat chunky chips was heavenly. The meat was beautifully seasoned and chargrilled and being a big chip fan, I can certify that these babies are not to be missed. On the express menu is Crisp belly of pork served with Asian slaw teriyaki and Mini fish and chips with Manchester caviar. There’s plenty more to choose from including what my guest
went for, Caeser salad (served full or half sized, £5.95 half sized with extra chicken). It’s a great spot for leisurely lunches either for business or pleasure. Through to the evening, the venue prides itself on its meats with a range of speciality burgers and grill specials including Pepper crusted fillet steak (£18.95) served with a choice of potatoes, sides and sauces. There is a 2-4-1 deal on the cocktail menu and house wine at £6.95 during happy hour. This month Blue Parrot are running a special 50% off deal so just mention Large Manchester when you order and you’ll get a wallet-friendly 50% off your bill! Large readers also get house wine for just £5.95 per bottle – that’ll be an extra Large one for me then! Blue Parrot Bar and Grille Portland St Piccadilly
A Northern Quarter eating institution that just keeps on pulling in the punters; this laidback cafe has been put on the map because of their kitsch, girly interiors, Piadinas and homemade cakes (not necessarily in that order). The crockery they serve on wouldn’t be out of place in your granny’s best china cupboard, but the sandwiches, tea and cake are out of this world. This is a charming and cute little hangout attracting a quirky crowd who relish in the smell of home-made baking and sitting amongst the chintz.
Sandwiches are served on a variety of breads but their speciality toasted flat breads (Piadina) are what really makes Bread and Butter stand out from the rest. Try the Brie, ham and grape with cranberry sauce, Italian meatball in homemade tomato and basil sauce or Moroccan lamb with mint yoghurt and mozzarella – all £3.90. There’s also a great veggie selection and lots of salads and jacket potatoes to choose from. Bread and Butter 66 Tib Street Manchester M4 1LG

Newton Faulkner Live @ Manchester Apollo Newton Faulkner is the gingerhaired dreadlocked singer you may have heard back in 2008 with his debut single ‘Dream Catch Me’. Large caught 24-year-old Newton and his melodic, folk-inspired music on tour at the Apollo. Before the gig, I anticipated one of those intimate performances featuriung one man and his guitar and that’s what it was - one outrageously talented individual and a range of his many guitars. Considering this was a one man show, Newton had a fantastic stage presence and engaged with the crowd with sack loads of witty banter and one-liners. Even the cries of “Newton I want your babies!” didn’t seem to falter him. Newton has the ability to create the sound of a whole band on one guitar. Sure there is the usual strumming but with a flick of his hand he creates the low tones of the base and the pulsing of the drum. At one point in the show he
also lifted the guitar to his mouth to create some kind of freaky vibrating sound by giving the strings mouth to mouth! He wowed the crowd with a mix of old and new material and covers which went down a storm. Who would have thought that super cool Newton could works his magic on Dead or Alive’s ‘You Spin Me Round’ and Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’ - sheer musical brilliance! His second album, ‘Rebuilt By Humans’ was released last year but in Newton’s own words, ‘Nobody knew it was out” so he’s rereleasing it in the summer, tying in nicely with his round of festival gigs. In his short years in music, Newton has built himself a strong army of adoring fans who were mesmerised by what he can create with an infallible, perfect and powerful voice and sheer genius guitar playing. www.newtonfaulkner.com
LIVE LYRICS...
Hurts – Live @ St Philips Church, Salford Finding themselves in the BBC’s Sounds of 2010 list, Mancunian band Hurts held their first ever gig last month. The audience were all eagerly anticipating the sounds produced by these two artists and considering Hurts have yet to finalise their album, there was apprehension in the air of what to expect. The church location was chosen as Theo and Adam wanted to break away from the norm and perform in a more powerful setting which added to the mystery and intrigue. The crowd was an eclectic mix of boys sporting oversized, thick-
rimmed spectacles and offcentred partings and girls with bright ruby-red lips. There was a sense of new-romance around and the infatuated audience made the boys feel right at home. It’s easy to see why without even playing a gig and without an album, there is so much interest in Hurts. Lead singer Theo kept incredibly composed throughout, standing almost choir-boy like on the spot with his hands clasped behind his back. I’m not sure if this is part of the Hurts persona or debut nerves, but with his powerful voice and Adams musical
accompaniment on keyboards; an incredible musical match is made. Their music can be described as moody electro- pop; raw, emotional and melodic. The guys were joined on stage by an opera singer (to fill in little gaps with yet more dark emotion), lots of drums and synthesisers but to give Theo justice, none of this would work as well if it wasn’t for his flawless, commanding voice. There will be a huge surge in popularity for Hurts with the release of their first album later this year. The only negative was the lack of audience interaction. Manchester musicians tend to be famous for their often ‘gobby’ banter which is something you won’t find at a Hurts gig. This may of course develop in time with the coming of heightened popularity, but something tells me that these boys are more about sophistication and style than showmanship and swearing.

FANCY A PINT?
As a nation defined by its pub culture, it’s distressing to think that the great British pub could be a dying breed. Smoking bans and economic turmoil have left many punters drinking from home rather than venturing out leaving small businesses in trouble. In true CAMRA style (that’s the campaign for real ale to those who haven’t come across it) Large decided to explore what the more traditional pubs in the city centre have to offer. From movie star tributes to eccentric landlords, each of these venues has its own distinct character. A great British pub can be defined not only by its atmosphere, but also its history. These long standing establishments all have a tale to tell, and chances are, if you’re willing to listen there’ll be someone that’s willing to tell you...
The Circus Tavern 86 Portland Street M1 4GX Originally a meeting place for local Circus performers, The Circus Tavern dates back to the 1600’s. The pub is a grade II listed building and is easy to miss with its humble exterior, but definitely worth a
visit. What lies beyond the modest entrance is a small venue adorned with memorabilia of Manchester’s finest. Each wall is covered with photographs featuring the likes of Eric Cantona and George Best, not to mention comic Johnny Vegas and opera singer Russell Watson – the list is endless. With a bar hailed as the smallest in Europe (think one person, two taps) it’s a bit of a squeeze, but as the atmosphere relies on conversation rather than loud music it’s not such a bad thing that you’re practically sitting on your neighbour’s knee. If venturing to The Circus Tavern, be prepared for a heavy dose of testosterone. Having said that, ladies are made more than
50% OFF RESTAURANT MENU welcome by George, the eccentric landlord, and red and white wines are available if you can’t stomach bitter. Drinks-wise there isn’t much variety, but what they do serve is priced reasonably. Go for the experience if nothing else. Large sat down for a pint with George, the landlord at The Circus Tavern....... Would you say you get some interesting customers? This place is well known to football supporters. A lot of players have been in over the years including George Best and Bryan Robson. Ray Winston is a regular and Ricky Hatton as well. So do you have a favourite customer?

One of my favourites was George Best. He’s a hero of mine. He was always very friendly with everybody. Once he came in and asked me for the number of my good friend who wrote a book about him called ‘George Best, Mussolini and Me’. I couldn’t believe that Georgie Best was asking for my help! When did the idea come about to use waitress service? People used to stand at the bar and queue for so long. Then this beautiful Slovakian girl came in asking for work. She had no experience with the pumps so I offered her a job as a waitress. The punters like it and the girls get great tips. There are so many pictures on the walls. Do you think they make an impact on people then?
So many people come in just to look at the photos. Once a young girl started looking at the photos. She stopped at one and started crying. So I asked her why she was crying, and she told me that it was a photo of her mother, and in the picture, she was pregnant with the young girl. I gave her a copy. Do you ever sell your pictures? People have offered me money, but I would never sell them. Bryan Robson offered me an England shirt in exchange for a picture, but I said no. It wouldn’t fit!
The Britons Protection
50 Bridgewater Street M1 5LE A venue which is comprised of the vital components for a great British pub; friendly staff, roaring
fires and great pint of Tetley’s. Reputed to be one of the oldest pubs in Manchester, The Britons Protection has been licensed since 1806 and has developed a long-established reputation ever since. Contrasting with the nearby chain bars along Deansgate Locks, this grade II listed venue offers a more traditional setting for those who wish to relax with a drink. The pub initially appears small but a corridor to the left of the pub leads to two more spacious rooms complete with fireplaces and copper top tables. The corridor has a serving hatch, so punters don’t have to venture back to the front bar for another drink. Its location next to the Bridgewater Hall makes this venue a great choice for a pre-show drink, and is also popular with city slickers escaping the office. Drinks prices are on the steeper side but the pub offers a wide variety and features real ales as well as the most extensive Whiskey list you could imagine! This well maintained venue is perfect for anyone wishing to experience the traditional comforts of a British pub.
FANCY A PINT?
Monroe’s 38 London Road M1 1PE Located opposite Piccadilly train station, family run pub Monroe’s has become a constant amongst the ever changing Manchester skyline. Asserting itself as neither a gay or straight bar this unusual pub is characterised by its dedication to Marilyn Monroe. Pictures of the silver-screen goddess adorn the walls and ceilings, her features taking shape in a variety of mediums from clocks to candles. The celebrity association is continued through the pub’s affiliation with comedian Foo Foo Lamar who frequented the pub regularly throughout his career, and is said to have staged his last performance here. Through a door suitably inscribed with ‘Gentlemen prefer Blondes’ is a large main room equipped with a small stage for live performances and open mic nights that take place every week. An eclectic group of people can be found at Monroe’s with live music nights on Wednesdays and Sundays attracting an older crowd and the nearby Warehouse project events on the weekends bringing
in younger punters. This, teamed with the pub acting as a meeting place for local cabaret acts as well as old war veterans means you’re sure to encounter your fair share of characters. Drinks are reasonably priced and food is available at lunch and dinner time. A must for Marilyn lovers. Large had a little chat with Michael, the landlord at Monroe’s So, why Marilyn Monroe? Well friends of ours owned the pub previously and they started the theme - we just extended it. Not only did we extend the theme but other people have extended it as well. People are always sending us pictures and dropping off different artwork of Marilyn. One man was staying here for a weekend and when he left he presented us with a tapestry he had created in his
room of different images of her. What kind of punters do you get here at Monroe’s? We get such a varied crowd. A lot of regulars though! Some nights it’s full of young people, other nights the youngest can be 50! What would you say makes your pub a success? You either like it or you don’t. Some people think it’s over the top and some people think it’s full of character. And it is full of character, because it’s full of characters. Would you say that with such a strong dedication to Marilyn Monroe your pub is seen as gay friendly? Yes, but we didn’t want to make the clientele so narrow. We don’t care if you’re gay or straight or this or that, as long as you behave yourself! Words: Lauren Hughes

St George’s Day in Manchester Friday 23rd April should be a momentous day in the UK but it often goes unnoticed. However, this year Manchester will be celebrating with a St George’s Day Market in Piccadilly Gardens sitting alongside the real food market. The market will showcase the very best British traders with divine crafts and gifts to take a peek at whilst topping up on yummy treats from the food market. The market is on from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th April. Coupled with the market, the St George’s Day Parade takes over Manchester on Sunday 25th April with a cavalcade of enough floats, bands and performers to make England’s patron saint proud. The parade will begin at Varley
Street, Miles Platting at 11.30am before snaking its way into the city centre along Oldham Road and Oldham Street to Piccadilly Gardens, where the Lord Mayor of Manchester will take a salute. The parade will then continue on its way along Newton Street, Great Ancoats Street, Butler Street and Bradford Road before returning to Varley Street for the finish. It is guaranteed to be a fusion of colourful, noisy and flamboyant fun for all and there’s also a special St George’s Festival in front of the Town Hall which will include musical and theatrical entertainment, vintage vehicles, an English themed pub, arts and crafts and various food and drink stalls. www.stgeorgesparade.org.uk

27th April to 2nd May Since 1995, Kinofilm has supported over 3,000 filmmakers, screening short films from over 20,000 submissions. Kino aims to create awareness of short films through exhibition and education and in doing so, promote cultural diversity. Over the years, the festival has provided a platform for emerging filmmakers, many of which have gone on to become some of the UK’s top independent filmmakers, including Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) and Damien O’Donnell (Inside I’m Dancing, East is East) as well as short-film makers whose debut features are due for release 2010, such as Brian Percival (A Boy Called Dad) and Lawrence Gough (Salvation). 2010 sees the eagerly anticipated return of Kinofilm which is being held at AMC Cinema, Instituto Cervantes and various venues across Manchester, showcasing a diverse mix of short films from not just the North West but from across the UK and Europe. www.kinofilm.org.uk
MAPS FESTIVAL...
Maps Festival this Month in Manchester Now in its third year, MAPS Festival is Manchester’s very own May Day carnival, set across 4 fun filled days and nights in the Northern Quarter. “MAPS started as an idea to celebrate the amount of independent creative’s in the area helping them reach a wider audience, as well as to have a bit of a party” says Miz, Festival Director, “with the amount of regeneration and changes in recent years, we felt that the businesses in the area were due a bit of a push. The Festival acts as a collective for promotion and publicity of activity in the creative heart of the city centre.” The festival is a showcase of local music and art, and includes gigs from banjo-driven knees ups to melodic acoustic soirees and full rock ‘n’ roll nights at the Northern Quarter’s best venues as well as unusual and secret locations. With performances from leading musicians including Liam Frost, Kid British and iLikeTrains, artwork from people like Nick Rhodes and Hammo, poetry from Belowsky
and the For Folk’s Sake collective, street performance and tea parties - in 2010 MAPS will bring more emerging talent to the Northern Quarter. Live music across the weekend starts on the Friday night, and comes from acts like Doll & The Kicks, fresh from touring with Morrissey, the ever popular Jo Rose, as well as local lovelies Fox Force Five, Janice Graham, Orphan Boy, Sophie’s Pigeons and more, at venues from the Roadhouse to the Bay Horse. Great DJs from the Manchester Soul Music Collective, including Dave Hulston and Steve Cato, promise a knees-up til the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday. MAPS has also got a mini-musical tour from local song-smith Danny Mahon who will be visiting the area’s exciting and unusual spaces, such as the Laundrette and Hatter’s hostel, with musical friends in tow. During the daytime, there will be art shows, craft activities and circus workshops, as well as weekend pass holders being able

to take full advantage of a variety of discounts and offers at places to eat and shop. There will be a ‘little bit of everything’ at the eclectic bar and eatery Odd on Thomas Street, including an exhibition from illustrator Kim Thompson, a special Northern Quarter themed Quizimodo quiz night, El Diablo DJ night and some avant garde film in their basement cinema. Dough Pizza Kitchen will be supporting the Festival in a big way this year, hosting a ladies cocktail evening in sister bar Apotheca (MFDF Best Bar 2009) as well as serving up their usual award winning pizza and pasta menu. Check out the MAPS website for more offers and deals for festival ticket holders across the weekend from other cafes and restaurants in the area. Literary fiends Bad Language are holding a spoken word and literature event at Nexus, street performance and workshops will come from the talented Circus Jam collective, and poetry includes pieces from the Kiss My Heart team. There will also be Mandarin lessons at the Chinese Arts Centre courtesy of Mandarin Corner.
Truly something for everyone with any interests! In support of new and emerging creativity, the Northern Quarter’s newest exhibition space Kraak is hosting a photography exhibition developed and curated by MMU photography students. The MAPS team support new talent, giving students the opportunity of showcasing their talents alongside established performers and artists.
Young people involved in last year’s events have excitingly gone on to gain work with touring bands as assistant sound engineers. Branded as being “a great one to just mill about at” by the Guardian and “somewhere a bit different” by the Unsigned Guide, MAPS Festival will be a great weekend for anyone looking for something fun to do over the May Day weekend. Tickets for the weekend are on
sale via Ticketline or from the festival’s designated pickup point at Grindsmith coffee house at the Thomas Street/Oldham Street junction. For full info on line-ups, projects and ticket sales log on to: www.mapsfestival.com Follow Festival updates at: www.twitter.com/mapsfestival
TUMMY RUMBLES...
This month Large decided to frequent some restaurants perhaps less well known to you city socialisers. For those who enjoy getting out of town and like the more suburban side of life then here are two places you should add to your day-tripping list.
Chorlton is an area populated with residents keen to benefit from the joy that comes with the variety of city centre living as it can match this on a smaller scale with a plethora of dining options, cupcake cafes and plenty of festivals throughout the year. One such dining option is Beggars Bush. The unusual name choice stems from the half Indonesian owners favourite beach side haunt in Bali. The menu is categorised as fusion, with a fabulous mix of European and Asian dishes but without the pretension and ridiculous prices. We visited early evening to find the place busy with a nice crowd. Dressed up, this is a casual dining restaurant, dressed down it’s a great cafe which is reflected by the tables outside the front door

occupied by locals all merrily having a chat. The menu features tapas style small bites, which can be tried as a starter or you can choose a few to make a full meal. Small bites can be made bigger, for example the Haddock and leeks with cream (£4.95) can be made into a main by adding Dauphinoise potatoes. There is a bigger bites section for main sized meals too. They offer a specials menu each night and my guest and I opted for the Corned beef fritters (£3.75) served with beetroot salad, which were light, fluffy and simply delicious and also the house special Rending curry (£4.75).
rosemary and crispy onions. The steak was cooked to perfection and was an amazing cut of meat. The restaurant sources their meat from Cheshire farms and the quality was exceptional. My guest tried out the Mixed seafood paella which was a small bite made bigger for a main sized portion. It was delicious and filled with mussels, squid and king prawns. Beggars Bush is a great addition not only to the restaurant circuit but the social scene in Chorlton and well worth a visit. The food is top quality and you really feel like a welcome guest due to the personal touches from the staff.
TUMMY RUMBLES...
The staple salty flavouring in the Malaysian curry was a little intense for my liking but packed full of melt in the mouth beef and it was nice to have a curry as a starter. There are loads of veggie options on the menu and with the restaurant being so accommodating, the chef is happy to adapt any dish for vegetarians. Moving onto mains, I opted for the Fillet Steak Mederci (£15) from the specials, topped with mushrooms and a cream and red wine sauce. Every main course comes with homemade chips, sautéed or Dauphinoise potatoes or salad. I can definitely recommend the sautéed potatoes served with

Puccini’s Swinton maybe a suburb of Manchester completely off your radar but it’s home to a restaurant worthy of repeat visits. The restaurant has been based in Swinton since 1982 and is family run and managed by Michael. There’s a certain buzz in the air at the moment about Italian eateries in Manchester, with new ones opening every few months. Whilst some do deserve their reputation due to delicious food, I have on more than one occasion been on
the receiving end of rushed, poor service which I’ve brushed aside because the food was great. Whilst Puccini’s doesn’t have the city centre postcode or slick, luxury decor; it does have fantastic, warm hospitality AND amazing food. The staff claim to know if a customer is a new face as most of their trade is regular and they have a brilliant rapport with punters old and new. Dotted around the restaurant are photos and memorabilia from every famous
(£11.50), again filled with flavour and with quite a kick to it due to the chilli but not overpowering. The pasta tasted really fresh, not bloating. The chef will cater to any taste so if nothing on the menu takes your fancy (which would be difficult!) just tell them what you want and they will create the perfect dish for you. For bigger appetites try out the Breast of duck in orange and Grand Marnier sauce (£15.50) or Fillet steak sat on a crouton topped with Pate and covered in Madeira wine sauce (£19.50). The restaurant comes into its own when it comes to desserts. If you have room then try the Panna Cotta topped with summer fruits or traditional Tiramisu (all desserts £5.50). It may seem out of the way, but Puccini’s has been going for over 25 years and has built a formidable reputation for serving delicious Italian cuisine. It is towards the top end of the scale price-wise but what sets it head and shoulders above the rest is the warm welcome every guest receives when they walk through the door. www.puccinirestaurant.co.uk

face that has dined with them – from sports stars to TV presenters, mayors to pop stars, it seems that Puccini’s has a pulling power strong enough to draw people out of town. There is so much on the menu to choose from so expect the usual Italian staple dishes with an ample range of speciality house dishes, such as Penne alla Giggs – minced fillet steak, tomato, cream and chilli (£10.50) - Ryan Gigg’s favourite dish. The restaurant cooks its own Italian breads daily (£2.50), thick and fluffy – delicious. To start, we opted for a simple Garlic bread with cheese (£4.95) and Pepperoni Ripieni (£6.95) a red pepper stuffed with mince meat, garlic and herbs then oven baked in tomato and cheese. The sauce was exceptional - lots of flavour from the herbs and garlic. Moving onto mains, my guest tried the Chicken risotto with peppers and onions (£9.95) which was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. I tucked into the Penne Christopher, pasta tubes with slivers of fillet steak, cream, tomato, garlic and chilli
FASHION FORWARD...
MiH Jeans Originally established back in the 1960s, MiH or ‘Made in Heaven’ as it was known then, took the female fascination with denim to a whole new level with their perfect fitting, bum enhancing, leg lengthening jeans. Manchester Street Style
PRINTS & PATTERNS...
Words by Natalie Shaw
Now that the cruellest of winters is behind us, we can sail forth into spring unhampered by winter woollies and heavy coats. We are once again invigorated by longer days and brighter skies, and this has been reflected in Manchester’s street style. As we slowly begin to peel back the layers, a plethora of patterns and prints emerge, from statement shirts and nostalgic band tees to feminine floral dresses and geometric print cardigans. And the emergence of psychedelic colours like Pepto-Bismol pink, vivid turquoise and magenta, have replaced dull subdued tones. Don’t be afraid to work stripes with spots, florals with abstract shapes and experiment with colour. This ‘pick and mix’ trend is as delicious as any candy-coated assortment, as it allows a mishmash of tones, prints, and colours to break though and ravage our senses. And it’s not just the staples that have been splattered with patterns; chiffon scarves also fuse vibrant colour with quirky print, and when styled accordingly, be it wrapped around the waist or tied in the hair for the ultra retro look, they become a welcome addition to any outfit. This is a trend which allows the face of a design to depict a mood - through grungy tees or dainty dresses. Powerful prints evoke more than personality - they are an escape route into a world of fashion rebellion, a world where anything goes.
CHARITY SPOTLIGHT...
2010 is a jam-packed year for Manchester-based Creative Support, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The agency was launched in 1990 by a steering group of senior people from the statutory and voluntary sectors who saw the need for a new organisation that could develop high quality housing and imaginative support services for people with mental health needs. The range of services soon expanded to support people with a learning difficulty, from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, as well as living across the country. Today, Creative Support helps over 2,400 people. With offices throughout the UK, the heart of the charity’s activities remain in Manchester, with its headquarters in the Northern Quarter. Government figures reveal 40 per cent of the population will need care at some point in their lives[1], so it’s easy to see how invaluable a charity like Creative Support can be. By providing a range of services from supported living to
outreach projects, the charity aims to promote the independence, inclusion and wellbeing of people with support needs. Creative Support also encourages their service users to participate in a variety of activities and interest groups – including drama workshops, football tournaments, art classes and walking groups. The Breakthrough service and cyber cafe in Manchester offer service users free computer access, home cooked food, cookery groups, photography workshops and massage therapy – and that’s when they’re not enjoying a party or day trip! What makes Creative Support particularly unique is the way it is committed to involving its service users in the day-to-day running of the organisation. For the six years that Roy Havery has been a service

He says: “In my experience, Creative Support lets their service users have a real say in who they would like to support them and who they want to let into their homes. I have never been involved in a company before where my opinion is valued so much.” This year, service users make up some of the panel in deciding how to celebrate Creative Support’s 20th anniversary. The city of Dates: Manchester can expect to see September 10th -12th, a range of events taking place The Gower Peninsular throughout the year, from sports competitions to art groups and drama projects, in the build-up to the final celebratory event in October.

Karate
SWEAT IT UP, WORK IT OUT...
Large writer Susie Burnett gets to grips with a different type of black belt than what normally adorns her waist........ Having tried Tai Chi, I thought it was only fair to go one step further and try the more adventurous and hard kicking self defence class, karate. My previous experience of Tai Chi worked in my favour, as both martial arts work on similar principles; maximising strength, power and balance. However, karate is a more aggressive art form and concentrates on the self defence aspect rather inner strength and well-being which is the focus of Tai Chi. I must admit that I felt a little stupid at first, especially as my usual gym buddy couldn’t come with me so I was all alone throwing punches and kicking the air. And, if I’m completely honest, I wasn’t intending on going back for the second class, but I happened to be at the gym when the class was on and so I thought I’d give it one last shot. You start by learning and perfecting the basic tricks called
kihon. By practicing these moves you are supposed to improve your balance, speed, concentration and strength. However the only thing I was concentrating on was the time, and how long I’d have to keep repeating the same moves for. Balance, precision and timing are all crucial to karate. Strength is also important, but not necessary as long as you focus on your concentration and push with your entire body, you can achieve the same effect. I have somewhat of an unfair opinion of karate as I only took the class as a fitness exercise and wasn’t serious about actually practicing the martial art. Karate is a sport that requires

discipline, practice, balance and commitment. It will take months to learn the basic techniques, and months I did not have. I was looking for a quick fix and new way to spice up my gym sessions. And although it was good (despite all my moaning), it’s not a quick and easy exercise class that you can pick up and drop whenever you please. However, for all those who are interested in martial arts and learning self defence techniques, I would recommend it as the class did seem to build up my strength and they do teach you a lot of tricks. Unfortunately the only thing I learnt was that if I ever get into trouble, I have one option and one option only… RUN!
5 SENSATIONAL FLAT STOMACH SECRETS...
1. Chill out! Stress of any kind emotional, physical, nutritional or mental - results in high stress hormone (cortisol) levels. Cortisol stores fat around your middle, ruining any chances of seeing a toned tummy anytime soon. The remedy: aim to be asleep by 10:30pm, and make sure you get some regular quiet time – yoga and meditation are both great, the herb Rhodiola Rosea can also help 2. Keep exercise regular, short, and hard. Long duration exercise isn’t just ineffective, it also releases more stress hormones into your blood. Keep your workouts short, high intensity, and resistance based 3. To crunch or not to crunch? You’ve probably already got a six pack, it’s just hiding. Pumping 100 sit ups out every day is only going
to give you bad posture and back pain later in life, but won’t burn fat around your middle. Leave them out 4. Great Abs Are Made In The Kitchen: Hidden intolerances and yeast (candida) overgrowth can cause abdominal inflammation and bloating. Following an elimination diet (link below), killing the sugar and starchy carbs, taking prebiotics, a high strength probiotic, and some kyolic garlic extract, can all work wonders 5. LOVE FROM MIMI...
I’m the epitome of “You can take the girl out of Manchester...” My life is full of laughing, Vimto, cups of tea and football. When I dance I love to shake my hips like a bag of chips and, if you’re buying, its lager and black for me please! There’s one thing I’d never be ashamed to admit and that is that I’m Northern (I hope you all share the same sentiment). For us that are loud and proud we can go share our love at, wait for it… The Northern. This place, I reckon, is actually my favourite bar in the whole of Manchester. It completely ticks all the boxes for what I like - friendly bar staff, a lovely interior, Motown music and it stays open until ridiculous o’clock (5am) at the weekend so I can, quite literally, dance the night away! I fell in love with The Northern yet again when, last week, after my mate’s ma’s 50th, we all suddenly felt geared up for some disco time at 1am and we didn’t have to worry about being kicked out half an hour later for closing time. Now it’s less than a 100 days to go until the World Cup and I think it’s really about time to start planning your summer and getting your shirt ready! I was very lucky to go and get a screening of the new away kit AND some fish and chips before the England v Egypt match at Umbro a few weeks ago and have decided that the red kit is deffo the one I’m going for. Jumping about, lager & black, and a white shirt would not be a wise combo for me! Right I’m off to P.A.R.T.Y the night away at Rags to Bitches 5th birthday party now so until next month Toodles my Manc dears, Loves Wonton x
