TUMMY RUMBLES...

Manchester’s long been a front runner in catching onto the hottest trends and we can now lay claim to some of the best alternative cafes in the country. We’re talking baking, fair-trade and kitsch interiors, read on to get the low down.

Cup 53-55 Thomas Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M4 1NA Cup is a great little edition to the Manchester cosmopolitan cafe vibe, another Northern Quarter favourite, Cup serves up some of the best baking in town and the crepes are to die for, try them with yoghurt, seasonal fruits and honey (£3.95). On offer are lots of fair-trade teas

and breakfast favourites including dippy eggs and soldiers (£3.50) and Cup Muesli (£3.00) which is their own mixture with organic fruit so you’re getting your five a day! I tucked into Whole Earth baked beans on toasted norlander with extra mushrooms (£3.40) absolutely perfect. For bigger appetites indulge in a huge cup of homemade vegan bean chilli served with toasted pitta bread (£4.75). The Veggie sausages and mash with red wine vegan gravy and red onion marmalade (£5.95) is rather delicious too. You won’t find much meat on the menu, apart from a few sandwich fillings, they try to stick to vegetarian where possible and the pies, where do we start with this little treat. They serve great pies

cocktails, herrings for breakfast, soup for lunch, figs in the evening, wine by the glass and Bloody Mary’s by the jug. There are books, newspapers, journals and magazines to browse, blankets to keep you warm if you dare to brave the Manchester weather (looks glorious but we know the truth) and notepads and pens to do some doodling with if the artistic mood takes you. Take a trip to the bathrooms and you’ll find a speaker churning out the unusual sounds of how to learn Russian amongst other weird transcripts helping to take your mind of what An Outlet goes on inside those four walls. Carver’s Warehouse, 77 Dale The venue has free wifi and is Street, Manchester, M1 2HG frequented by a mix of young An Outlet is an intimate, romantic architechs, bloggers, musicians, little place that sells coffee writers and general creative folk.

TUMMY RUMBLES...

(from £4.00) with great fillings and the best bit is you can top them up with mash, gravy, coleslaw or peas, mmmmmm!! The drinks menu is pretty impressive, the usual teas and coffees sit alongside smoothies and milkshakes. My favourite slurp is the Raspberry Beret Milkshake (£3.50) which is raspberry ice cream, summer fruits and milk. In terms of decor, quaint tables and chairs await you and lots of tea sets adorn the walls, like sitting in your Grannies lounge with a contemporary twist!

TUMMY RUMBLES...

Soon to be an integral part of the eclectic Manchester social scene, the venue plans to host evenings of performance and discussion, film nights and poetry readings. The menu is a delicious mix of soups, sandwiches, salads in the day time but come dusk, An Outlet offers tapas style picks, cold meats, dips and international beers and wines. We tucked into a Lancashire cheese, ham and tomato chutney sandwich (£4.00) which was bursting to the rim and full of flavour. I rooted for a salad (feeling health conscious) The salad bar is amazing with heaps to choose from including Roast Root Vegetable and Puy Lentil, Feta, Cucumber, Olives, Basil and Lemon and Spiced Tuna and Bean, all priced at £4.50. There’s a gorgeous selection of sweet treats, the Banana Cake (£2.50) counteracted my healthy salad but oh, it was so worth it!

Soup Kitchen 31-33 Spear St, Off Stevensons Sq, Manchester, M1 1DF This Manchester favourite has been on the scene since 2005 and touted as the Northern Quarters canteen with the long bench style table and seats. Always bustling, this informal dining concept is a little marvel. The menu changes daily with soups and specials. The soup menu features simple soups like tomato and basil, leek and potato alongside more heartier and unusual choices such as Sweet Potato and Bacon. We tried out Pea and Mint (£2.75) a bit of a strange taste, very heavy on the peas but strangely delicious at the same time and Broccoli and Stilton (£3.10) which was made to perfection, just the right amount of both vital ingredients. The outlets name is slightly misleading as it’s not all about

soups, they run a specials menu consisting of humongous portions of stews, pies and other northern favourites. We gave the Beef Chilli and Rice (£4.50, Veggie option available) and the Beef Goulash (£4.95) a whirl. I can’t explain enough here how filling the meals are and how much you get, it really is great value and the taste is spot on too! There are plenty of sandwiches and a mini salad bar to have separately or on the side of a meal. They have a great range for vegetarians on offer with Chickpea Curry and Asparagus and Gruyere Quiche on the menu when we called in. If you have a sweet tooth, there are homemade cakes, brownies and cookies on offer from £1.75. The venue is also licensed to sell alcohol so you can have a little tipple if that takes your fancy. Now you can join the soup kitchen gang for weekend wind down drinks and kitsch cocktails every Friday night.

Fresh pizza and pasta. All doughs are made onsite including wholewheat and gluten free. Dairy free cheese available Available for private bookings

GOINGS ON IN THE CITY - APRIL...

Queer Up North 9th-25th May, City Centre Queer Up North takes its place firmly back in Manchester’s hearts this year focusing on all things queer. Queer up North commissions, produces and presents a diverse program of live performance, art and ideas. Since its launch back in 1992, QUN has commissioned over 30 new performances, many have gone from strength to strength after playing to Manchester crowds. QUN has become a global phenomenon with work being showcased in over 30 cities such as New York, Sydney and Paris 2008. Live performance is an integral part of the festival with commissions from the UK alongside more further afield destinations such as Poland, Hungry and South Africa. Now part of Manchester International Festival, this year sees two weeks of live performance, art and ideas across Manchester including 9 new productions, two special created debates, five days of cabaret, music and comedy and an original 1940’s Belgian Spiegeltent.

One of the highlights this year is ‘You Can’t Say That!’ on Saturday 16th May which looks at the concept of causing ‘offence’ and how the taboo of causing offence is often used to regulate societies use of language and debates whether it is used to protect society or inhibit free expressionalism. Visit: www.queerupnorth.com for full event listings and to buy tickets and be part of another inspiring Manchester festival.

THE BEST - SANDWICH IN TOWN...

Rustica Hilton Street This little gem serves some of the most delicious sandwiches known to man, based on Hilton Street just off Oldham Street; the sandwiches are huge and reasonably priced. The shop is a bit pokey but you’ll often see a queue outside which is purely an indication of how good the butties are. Hot favourites are the award winning Milano, Hot chicken and bacon with pesto and garlic mayonnaise on toasted ciabatta or Hot beef and mozzarella with red onion and tomato relish on wholegrain Frisbee all from £2.99, can’t beat it!

Handsfords Bakery Arndale Market Those in the massive queue everyday know the truth, there’s nothing like a hot cavery sandwich to perk up your mood. Treat yourself to delicious hot beef, pork or gammon with all the expected accompaniments for £2.35. They also do deli sandwiches where you can choose from an array of magnificent fillings including Lemon Pepper Crumbed Chicken or my favourite Maryland farm Mature Cheddar Mixed with Farmhouse Red Leicester and spring onions....mmmmmm!

King Street If you want a grown up cocktail but with a reasonable price tag, Room offers classic range of cocktails and in true Room style, most of them with a twist. Rooms’ decadent decoration and style is reflected in their beautifully presented cocktails. The Roomberry (£7.00) is Strawberry liquor and Chambord topped with Champagne and served with a perfectly placed strawberry adorning the top of the glass. The Room G & T (£6.00) is a retro classic with a twist. Served with Gin and mixed with sage, lemon and tonic, your cocktail will come served with red grapes and lemon finishing. This is just THE perfect summer time drink, very citrusy with a sharp zing, nothing short of perfection. Room do selected cocktails at £4.00 during happy hour.

Walrus High Street One of the newer but no less popular editions to the Northern Quarter serves up some interesting cocktails. Don’t expect to see any of your typical favourites on this menu, this is all about surprise! You won’t even see on the menu what the main alcoholic ingredient is as they don’t want you to be put off a certain cocktail if you don’t like whisky for example. Favourites are March Hare (£6.50) which is Apple based with honey, lemon juice, gin and topped up with sparkling chardonnay, sort of tastes like apple boiled sweets and also the Ice Pop (£6) which is a huge glass of apple vodka, lemon cello, raspberry and passion fruit syrup and lemonade, very girly but fun and a sure fire way to keep you pepped up on a night out. Don’t miss 2-4-1 on cocktails, weeknights between 4-7pm

Fly on the Wall from Band on the Wall Legendary venue, Band On The Wall is set to reopen in September. Welcoming all music, art and film lovers from Manchester and beyond. Band on the Wall is run by Inner City Music a non-profit registered charity with one interest only…to revive a venue that was once an important presence in the UK’s music scene. Having been around for the most part of the last century, in the late 1970’s the venue was firmly on the map by creating a home for punk rock music. In booking freshfaced bands such as Joy Division, Buzzcocks and The Fall it would be responsible for showcasing some of the finest bands in musical history and setting the stage for internationally acclaimed artists such as Mica Paris, Bjork, Art

Blakey, Carleen Anderson and John Martyn who played at the venue in more recent years. Since closing in 2005, the inner shell of a beautiful Victorian building prepares to absorb the sounds of the city once again. The revival project has been headed by a combination of new and old leaders all of which are strikers in the musical field. New CEO Gavin Sharp isn’t short of experience in the music industry working most recently as programme manager at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall where he produced its important Capital of Culture Programme. in the venues history, Ian Croal founder of the charity Inner City Music and has been responsible for programming and fundraising for a large part of Band on the Wall’s life. Mike Chadwick has taken on the role of Music Programmer, choosing the bands and artists who will play at the venue. With a background in radio broadcasting since 1991 he is a valuable asset to many exciting line-ups to come. New facilities will house programs that will both entertain and educate. With a new recording studio and The Picturehouse, located in the adjacent building, which organisers describe as being the ‘new day-time face of Band on the Wall’ it promises to be an exciting social space. Whether you are visiting the city as a tourist or a regular to this part of town, why not spend time in its café after soaking in the venues exhibitions of music, visual art and moving image. Band on the Wall’s new Education Officer, Tim Chatterton is determined for the venue to

become ‘a centre for musical excellence, providing educational activities to people of all ages and backgrounds’. Although the venue has got involved in education in the past, they are taking it to a new heights with their regular, evening and weekly programs, including drumming, percussion and dance classes, choir sessions and music technology classes. With the support of the Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund and Manchester City Council, sponsorship from the likes of Manchester Airport and Inner City Solutions and with honorary patrons such as Sir Richard Leese, Band on the Wall should continue to live a long and fruitful life allowing generations of individuals the freedom of creative expression.

Fine Lines

Manchester isn’t short of budding new musical acts all badgering away to show their worth but two awe-inspiring acts that have recently caught our eye are Fine Lines and The Vipers.

Fine Lines are 5 piece who have been on the music circuit for the past 3 years and have built up a good Manchester following in that short time. Taking musical influences from The Editors, Snow Patrol, Paul Weller and Manchester

wonder kids, Elbow, the band are heading back out on the road with a new EP after the release of ‘Monday Nights’ last year. With most bands, their line up has evolved over time but now they are ready to take things to new heights and up the ante with a mini tour later in the year to grow their fan base in core Northern towns. Fine Lines base themselves out of Oldham Street meaning they are constantly amongst the creativity and artistic expression found in this part of town, something which influences their writing and direction. They regularly play in the city and their gigs are packed full with catchy and energetic tracks. The band have easily found the musical balance between hard core rock and roll and soft, melodic driven tracks finding a musical wavelength with their audience comprising of the more grown up gig-goers many of us have turned into. Combine an explosive rhythm section, with a guitarist of sure to be of legendary proportions, a

keyboard player with a natural instinct for great melodies and a singer with a style and aggression all of his own and you get FINE LINES

The Vipers The Vipers are a four The Vipers piece that have been kicking around since 2006. With a new album out on 4th May, the band tells us all about their unique musical style.... Your biography tells everyone that you are not a typical Manchester band, so how would you describe your musical style? Style is something that we leave for other bands to strive for. We’re more about substance. Seriously though, the best thing about The Vipers is that we all come from different directions, with different influences. We have never tried to follow any kind of trend and have always written what comes to us naturally. We take the visceral 70s CBGBs punk thing, the raw Detroit-garage sound, the scarcity

It makes it can make it hard to get your voice heard above the crowd and there are a lot of sharks out there that prey on inexperienced bands. Do you have any unusual methods to get in the zone when writing? We just lock ourselves in our dark little room with plenty of fresh ideas and see what comes out the other side. There are no rituals, no sacrifices, well, not too many. Describe your record label ‘northern hoodoo records’. Are you interested in finding local northern talent or from anywhere? putting more time into Northern Hoodoo over the next year or so. At the moment it’s a vehicle for us to put our own records out, but we definitely want to start helping other bands get their music out. How does it feel to have same producer as the likes of arctic monkeys? Well, we met Alan a few years before the Arctic Monkeys exploded. The guy is a legend. We did the album in three days with him. He worked us hard and definitely got the best out of us, but I think we worked him harder. Are you different off stage or grimy garage rock b@st!rds through and through as quoted by NME? We’re grime to the core. We just reflect what we see, so how else could we be? CHARITY SPOTLIGHT...

Mood Swings Mood Swings is a unique and unusual voluntary organisation in the city centre. This is a charity in the true sense of the word where by the majority of the work is done by volunteers. Mood Swings works tirelessly to offer support services to those experiencing emotional distress. The charity decline financial help from the government as they don’t like to work within the restrictions that often comes with this funding. They simply want to be able to help any person feeling unwell and in need. By staying independent, the charity can do so much more. They aren’t a mental health charity as that conjures up images of illness and trips to the doctors, they specifically focus on well-ness and how you can achieve this. The charity works to bridge the gap between wanting to be well and

the necessary steps needed to take to achieve this. They work with absolutely everyone from barristers, actors, footballers, road sweepers, people from every background and lifestyle. There are no restrictions here. The team become the friends and family to those going through emotional distress, the support network when people are struggling. They have a helpline which anyone can call and calls come from all over the world, they have helped individuals from South Africa, New Zealand, France and Hong Kong. Sometimes all it takes is talking things through to get people back on track, some people need more support. Mood Swings don’t diagnose the problem, they ask people what is wrong and what help do they need. They do what the doctors

can’t, the personal touches such as looking after a pet when the person needs to go into hospital for treatment. They look at the practical ways of helping and getting people out of a crisis and assist their steps to recovery. They survive on fundraising and small grants and the team are truly inspirational. They have an open door policy where people can drop in for a cup of tea and a chat at anytime. In fact they get visits from many of those they’ve helped over the years on a regular basis, just dropping by to let them know how they are. They work very closely with people in need to get them through to the recovery stage with the knowledge that everyone can get better with the right support and resources. So if things are becoming a struggle, give them a call. Mood Swings Network www.moodswings.org.uk 0161 953 4105. Helpline manned Monday to Friday, 10.30-4.30pm
