to join forces and put on some smashing events in local areas. It’s all about making lasting improvements in communities. Throughout the summer, the campaign focuses on celebrating all that is community spirit linking with existing initiatives such as World Environment Day and National Volunteer Week. This is a real opportunity for the people of Manchester to get to know their neighbours and work together in making positive changes to their local communities. For more information and to find out about events happening in your area visit their website.

Manchester is welcoming Taps, the latest innovative concept in bar offerings. Taps offers self-service beer taps at each table. Located in Great Northern Tower under big sister Epernay, Taps is offering a unique customer experience you will not find anywhere else. Customers won’t have to battle at the bar to get served; you simply pay for what you pour and nothing more. Accurate computerised monitors inform how much beer has been consumed and this is then equated to a certain cost. That’s not to say guests will be able to over consume. The beer flow can be cut off at any point by staff trained to keep their beady eyes on those getting out of hand. Each table is fitted with a beer

WISTFUL WONDERING AT THE WEEKEND...

Step Back in Time at The Triangle The Triangle is taking a trip back to 1837 with a photography exhibition showing how the building has developed over different decades before it became one of Manchester’s biggest fashion hubs. Travel on a historical journey over 172 years starting from when the building was ‘The Corn Exchange’ originally selling corn, fruit and vegetables in the 1920’s. Following the Second World War, the centre was a retail maze for alternative communities; a market of stall holders selling quirky and unique items, jewellery, clothing and secondhand records. There was even a tattoo parlour, private detective agent and legendary clairvoyant; Avril graced the centre with her now famous predictions. She actually told Tim Booth from James his band would have a famous hit with a song about ‘sitting down’! The building suffered massively in 1996 when the IRA bomb shook the life out of the centre, every

single window was blown out, causing wide-spread devastation. It took four years to redevelop and turn it into ‘The Triangle’ moving away from alternative retail to a more commercial offering. The centre now houses world leading brands alongside more unique offerings and has recently been a landmark location for celebrity events including boxing weigh-ins for Amir Khan. The exhibition is completely free however The Francis House Trust will benefit from any charitable contributions made. The Triangle, Exchange Square thetriangle.co.uk

Sitting in the Salford Quays landscape is The Imperial War Museum North. The multi-award winning building designed by world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind was built to represent a globe shattered by conflict. It reveals how war shapes lives through its powerful exhibitions, tours and activities and encourages visitors to be more responsible citizens. It’s impressive from the outside,

dominating the skyline with its aluminium structure. The place is mind-blowing and has just won the Manchester Tourism Award for Large Visitor Attraction and rightly so! Get lost in the spectacular array of interactive exhibitions, from recitals and performances to workshops & art demonstrations, all tackling themes of war and conflict in creative and exciting ways. The museum was built to get visitors relating to the content so feel free to get stuck in. Guests are encouraged to get a pencil out and get lost in artistic wonder drawing your way around the place or making a reusable shopping bag whilst taking part in a fashion workshop. The museum has welcomed over two million visitors since it opened so make sure you don’t miss out on this little marvel. Amazingly, entry is free and it’s a great day out for all ages. iwm.org.uk

Dancing in the Streets The Printworks Time to turn it up a gear with The Printworks dusting off its dancing shoes for a summer of dancing in the streets in a search to find the hottest movers in Manchester. Last year George Sampson performed in front of the 1500 strong crowd at the final and even asked the winners of the competition to appear on his tour! Each heat sees a different dance style being showcased with two acts from each round making it through to the final. On 8th August, disco fever hits Tiger Tiger for heat three and then funky street dancers impress the crowds at Pure on 15th August. The grand final is on August 22nd at Pure where the ultimate dance off happens in front of a celebrity judge. This is one explosive competition so don’t miss out. Wheel of Manchester The Wheel of Manchester has been turning and turning for a fair few years now but most Manchester residents have not stepped inside its transporter glass capsules. Stacked at 60 metres tall, this grand machine towers over Exchange Square and takes passengers on a magical ride over the top of the city centre. The wheel weighs 365 tonnes and passengers get an informative commentary inside the capsule about the city’s great sights. Get a birds eye view of the CIS Tower and

the Hilton, two of Britain’s tallest buildings. You also get a great view of Sport City out to the east, the mighty Old Trafford and on a clear day you can even see 26 miles in the distance to the Pennines and The Peak District. It’s only £6.50 for adults to ride on the wheel and if you fancy going all out, you can even hire a private capsule for £50, you might even want to throw in a bottle of champagne in there for a special occasion! worldtouristattractions.co.uk

TUMMY RUMBLES...

The Ox, Steak and Ale Pie, with Mashed Potato, Black Pudding and Sautéed Savoy Cabbage.

We all love our Northern favourites, there’s nothing that mash and gravy can’t cure. Cosy pubs are situated on most corners in the city centre but here are our favourite three.

The Ox 71 Liverpool Road, Castlefield theox.co.uk This gastro pub and hotel in Castlefield is headed up by Chef Richard Davies. It’s won countless good food awards in recent years including ‘Best Sunday Lunch in the North West’ by The Observer and ‘Best Gastro Pub in the North West’ by The Independent and now it’s been given the Large stamp of approval!

Its traditional decor adds to the quirky charm and the menu is classically subtle. Not trying too hard, just sticking to what it knows best and it really doesn’t disappoint. The Ox treats its customers to two courses for £10 from MondaySaturday, 12-8pm. Hearty, and quality food at a great price. All the food is sourced locally and prepared freshly on site. The only thing they buy in ready made is ice cream and bread. You’ll find typical pub favourites on the menu including Oven Roast Lamb Rump (£15.95) and Fillet Steak with Ox Tail Faggots and Potato Rosti (£19.95) and a daily specials menu packed full of

The Angel 6 Angel Street, M4 4BQ theangelmanchester.co.uk Local food hero Robert Owen Brown has turned his hand to a new-ish project, The Angel situated on the northern fringes of the city centre on Angel Street, just at the top of Shudehill. It’s a blink and you’ll miss it kind of place but do not be put off, inside lies food heaven! Robert’s won ‘North West Chef’ of the year twice so be safe in the knowledge that the food is fantastic! It opened 10 months ago and customers are spreading the word like wildfire and rightly so. Everything is sourced locally, often by Robert himself. Don’t be surprised to see Rob enter the pub with the latest catch from a fishing trip only for it to be served up on the menu soon after. Rob will even organise hunting and fishing trips for customers who want to really know where their food is coming from. It’s not only the food that comes up trumps here, there’s also an impressive range of cask ales for punters to sample. The menu isn’t

TUMMY RUMBLES...

traditional pub dishes with an Ox twist such as Duck, Confit Leg and Breast with Sautéed Cabbage and Cherry and Kirsch Jus (£15.95). We tucked into Tomato and Mint soup (£2.95), which was bursting with flavour and the mint really added to the delicious flavour without being overpowering, and Mussels in White Wine and Cream Broth (£3.95). The mussels were prepared perfectly and the sauce was rich without being too heavy. For mains it was Steak and Ale Pie (£9.95) served with Mashed Potato, Black Pudding and Sautéed Savoy Cabbage. The pie crust was light and airy and filled with chunky, lean steak. The black pudding was a welcome addition to this pub classic. The Cumberland Sausage and Mash was divine. Not over facing, just right in terms of portion size and served with balsamic onion gravy, it was a real treat. Both starters and mains were from the two courses for £10, unbelievable value and the food is just pure indulgence.

TUMMY RUMBLES...

over the top, simply, it’s designed to concentrate on what customers like best alongside a specials menu often consisting of Rob’s fresh catch. Specials on the day we visited included Spam Fritters (£4.50), Creamy Rabbit Stew with Tarragon (£12.00) and Whole Seabass with Lemon and Garlic (£12.50). The Angel has a very rural feel to it, almost like the country comes to the city, and is usually filled with locals in on the secret of how good the food, wine, ale and atmosphere is. We started with a simple Tomato Soup (£4.00) which was lovely. It was such a huge portion, you could actually drown in it the bowl was that big! The Morcambe Bay Shrimp Fish Cakes (£6.00) were a little treat too, served with baby

herb salad and chive mayonnaise, the fish was extremely fresh. For mains it was Rib Eye Steak and Duck Fat Chips (£13.50) for me. The meat was cooked to perfection, so juicy and the fat chips were divine, I’m still thinking about them now! We also tried Lamb Hot Pot (£11.50), again another huge portion, just the way pub food should be! Elaborately decorated with a sliced potato crust, and filled to the brim with chunks of tender lamb, beautifully cut baton carrots, leeks and onions and served with red cabbage and bread to soak up all the juices absolutely perfect! It’s all about hearty, filling portions and both dishes certainly did that. Top marks to an impressive and inspiring menu full of British flavour.

The English Lounge

TUMMY RUMBLES...

64-66 High Street, M4 1EA englishlounge.co.uk The English Lounge is the perfect pub in the city centre, with a great intimate atmosphere and all the traditional cosy touches such as huge candelabras, waxy, overflowing candles and over plumped cushions. The menu is traditional English at its best and is jam packed with hearty pub favourites. Great for lunch or dinner, The English Lounge offers some great specials including two courses for £13 mid-week and bottles of house wine for £6, Monday to Friday from 12-8pm. We visited at lunch time and were terribly sad to be heading back to the office after our food; we could have sat back in those comfy chairs and spent the whole afternoon gossiping over a big glass of wine. We tucked into Nachos to share (£6.50) which come piled high with Guacamole, Salsa, Cheese and delicious Chilli, it was a starter of epic portions and didn’t leave much room for the mains! From

peering at other diners plates, the Prawn Cocktail looked pretty tasty too served in a large wine glass. Struggling to fit in main courses we tried out the Greek Salad served with Olive Dressing, Feta Cheese, Olives, Cucumber and Red Onions (£7.95) which was really delicious and refreshing after the heavy starter. Salads can be ordered as starter or main course size depending on appetite. The Hot Chicken Sandwich (£7.50) is the best seller on the lunch menu and marinated with Cajun spices, melted Cheese. It was a hefty size served with a heap of chunky pub chips and left me full to the brim. The main courses on the menu include 8oz Lamb Rump with Creamed Garlic Potatoes (£12.95), Lamb and Mint Pie in Shortcrust Pastry (£8.95) and Ricotta, Mushroom and Spinach Tart (£8.95)......drooling yet? The English Lounge is typical English fayre at its best, with welcoming and attentive staff, a varied menu with pub favourites, contemporary twists and all the charm of a country pub, but in the heart of the city centre.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT - DANCE DECADE...

Manchester is famed for its musical heritage and that focus is often on bands and acts with a back catalogue of sing-out-loud anthems behind them but the Manchester DJ scene has been bubbling away for years and doesn’t get nearly as much credit as the Indie kids. There seems to be a change in popularity in type of dance music with each decade, from Electro to House, Trance to Drum ‘n’ Bass, they all have one thing in common, sure fire floor fillers. The desire to dance is innate and Mancunians’ sure know how to bust a few moves, granted some better than others! This city has an explosive dance music scene and some of the best venues to listen to it in. DJ’s flock from far and wide to play to Manchester crowds receiving rapturous welcomes and top notch Northern hospitality.

heavily associated with the rise of Acid House and Rave music. Formerly a yacht builder’s shop and Bollywood cinema, the building remains on Whitworth Street, now as an apartment block. It was largely financed by the late Tony Wilson’s Factory Records. In 1986 it became one of the first The Iconic Hacienda clubs in the UK to play House In the 1990’s, The Hacienda was music. In 1988, the club launched widely regarded as the world’s its Ibiza influenced Acid House most famous nightclub and is night ‘Hot’ which helped to boost

the ‘Madchester’ Rave scene that had been brewing for some time. Financial troubles ultimately led to the demise of the legendary Hacienda and with spiralling debts, Manchester’s residents shed a tear when the club closed forever in the summer of 1997 at 15 years old. So many influences from the Hacienda have been integrated into new nightclubs, the urban interior; steel, glass and wood are now seen in clubs across Europe. The Hacienda helped put a spring in the step of many, it made people happy and was place that brought people from different backgrounds together under one music-fuelled atmosphere.

What is your favourite Manchester venue to play in and why? I always like Area 51. The sound system is awesome and with the effect of the dry ice machine, a super special atmosphere is on the cards. What was your defining moment as a DJ? Probably dj-ing for Ministry Of Sound in Mauritius to 5000 people in a football stadium! Brilliant visuals, lights and sound. I finally was able to show people what I can do as a DJ. Who are your biggest musical influences? I was brought up on Mowtown and only started to like Dance at 15. It grew into an obsession! I always listened to the old school house dj DJ’s like Frankie Knuckles, Masters At Work, Danny Tenaglia and used to record Kiss Radio

weekly on tape listening to Jeremy Healy, Alistair Whitehead and Graeme Park playing wicked House music. Where do you see the Manchester music scene progressing in the next 5 years? Manchester will continue to grow as a driving force in music, art and fashion. A lot of good things have been produced from Manchester; Sankey’s, The Warehouse Project, The Hacienda. I always love djing here… there’s no place like home! Sum up your musical style in one sentence Only the best House and Electronica.

Krysko What is your favourite venue to play in Manchester and why? I’m one of the resident DJ’s at The Warehouse Project so obviously there but it’s because it’s not technically a club venue. Acoustically it’s amazing to play at, I love the history behind it, it used to be a World War Two air raid shelter and aesthetically it looks fantastic. What’s been the defining moment of your career? Has to be Tribal Gatherings at Glastonbury in 2005. After the Radio One stage closed with Moby, we were the last music playing across the whole festival, and

Sum up your personal musical style Changes for the venue but all based around good quality house music.

Iain Taylor What is your favourite Manchester venue to play in and why? At the moment it’s Area51. The sound system is amazing and the crowd are fantastic. We’ve managed to put some unbelievable line ups together there recently from DJ Sneak, Felix Da Housecat & Josh Wink to Steve Lawler, Freak n Chic label nights & Minus Records DJs like Gaiser & Barem. What was your defining moment as a DJ? My first gig at the Hacienda in 1995 was pretty defining. It was the first time I’d’ played at a proper club. I was so nervous that my hands were shaking it took me about three minutes just to es què és my first tune. After the nerve racking first mix went smoothly it

everyone left Moby and came to us. 70,000 people dancing, mind blowing! What/Who are your biggest musical influences? My Uncle Dave got me into it, he’s a Funk DJ in Australia but other influences are Ralph Lawson from Back 2 Basics, I used to go and see him a lot when I was younger and aspired to be like him. Also Francois K, this guy played at Studio 54 in New York back in the day and he’s still cutting it in his 50’s! Where do you see the Manchester music scene progressing? I think it’s gone through a bit of down time recently but that’s been good for the smaller nights like El Diablo and Belly of the Beast. These nights have built up a steady small-ish crowd and been very successful in getting a regular following. When the Warehouse Project kicks off again, it won’t damage these nights as Warehouse Project is more diverse and across the board.

was uphill from there. It was one of the best nights of my life and firmly cemented the feeling that I could do this for the rest of my life. Who are your biggest musical influences? That’s a tough one! I find inspiration from so many places, from all corners of the musical spectrum... Classical music, Folk and Tribal music, Latino, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Kinks, Oasis, Gorillaz, Metallica, Chemical Brothers, James Brown, Quincy Jones, Ritchie Hawtin, Joey Beltram (Energy Flash changed my life), Beastie Boys, The Pharcyde, De La Soul, Lord Finesse Grandmaster Flash & Furious 5, Eminem, Dr Dre, Unkle, Laurent Garnier, Orbital. Everything from Drum N Bass & Breaks to all forms of House and Techno. My production partner and our Rejekt project have inspired me massively. Where do you see the Manchester music scene progressing in the next 5 years? There are always new clubs and nights springing up here. Since Area 51 opened last year, another

two decent clubs have opened. With each new student term a flurry of new promoters pop up. Some crash and burn but some succeed and go on to become an integral part of the city’s scene. Sum up your musical style in one sentence. Deep Hypnotic rhythms with Warm Bass and some Trippy Sonics over the top, it varies from Deep House and Techno to more broken beat Electronic. If you’re heading out to Ibiza this summer catch Iain at Space with Carl Cox, The Zoo Project and Eden. For the full low down, check out www.myspace.com/rejekts

Update from Inspector Jo Marshall:

CITY CENTRE POLICING...

Hi there, This month is a busy one for the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team. “Operation Tennis”, our summer operation is about to begin. You will see additional police officers, police horses and other resources out on the city’s streets to make sure that we keep the area safe for everyone to enjoy during one of the busiest times of the year. We are also running a night time operation in the Gay Village where PCs Sam Tennant and Christina Hodgson are working with the Lesbian & Gay Foundation, NHS and the Drug and Alcohol Team to advise revellers of the dangers of alcohol and drugs. We have a crime prevention caravan in the Village every weekend to offer advice about not becoming a victim of violent crime or sexual offences. Please remember to stay with friends, pace your drinks and plan how you are going to get home. The Neighbourhood Policing Team has a newcomer, PC Paula Mannion, who is the city centre officer dedicated to homelessness and begging. She is leading a specialised operation with other officers, working with partners from Children’s Services, Social Services and interpreters to tackle the issues associated with this continued problem. Please don’t give to people on the streets. I would advise you to give to a charity that supports homeless people through rehabilitation and rehousing in order to get them back on their feet. Finally, our PCSOs are busy arranging a free community fun day event to be held in Cathedral Gardens on the 22nd August, please make sure you come and enjoy the event. To contact the Neighbourhood Team about any issues you wish to discuss please call 0161 856 3221 or email us a1apt@gmp.police.uk Stay safe, Jo

Thomas Adams once said that “prevention is better than healing because it saves the labour of being sick” and this is at the very heart of the Genesis Appeal. Currently 1 in 10 women and 1 in 1,000 men will develop breast cancer in their life time, yet less than two per cent of all cancer research funding goes into prevention! That’s why the Genesis Appeal is different; their aim is to create a future without breast cancer by making 1 in 10, none in 10. The Genesis Appeal is based right here in the Manchester, in Europe’s first purpose-built breast cancer prevention centre at Wythenshawe hospital, where they fund vital research into the prevention and early diagnosis of this terrible disease. You may have seen the Genesis Appeal turn the streets of Manchester pink recently as 1,000 supporters donned their tutus and took part in the Genesis ‘Keep Fit and Pink’ 10km Walk. Genesis Appeal funded research has established a link between lifestyle factors and the

development of breast cancer. Quite simply, by improving your diet and becoming more active, you can reduce your chances of getting breast cancer! That is why the Genesis Appeal has launched their ‘Keep Fit and Pink’ campaign. What make the Genesis Appeal so different is their supporters. From sky diving, to climbing Kilimanjaro, from coffee mornings to sponsored runs, supporters never fail to come up with new and wacky ways to raise funds to help create a future without breast cancer. The Genesis Appeal hosts a variety of events throughout the

is always a lot to do. The jewel in the crown takes place 15th October with the third annual Genesis Ladies Lunch, this year at the Lowry Hotel.
