Manchester
Hello lovely people, September is a gorgeous month in Manchester, still a bit of sun to be seen and lots of fun to be had. There are plenty of outdoor events to get involved in so get out and enjoy this glorious city. Summer’s been a bit of a washout but it is nothing we’re not used to is it? So here’s to welcoming autumn and everything Manchester has in store for us. We’re running some great socials in September to celebrate the start of Corona Week at Hard Rock Cafe and then it’s back to the English Lounge for our monthly pub quiz at the end of September. It’ll be dark before we finish work soon enough so embrace the last few weeks of British summer time with one last BBQ, one last Sunday afternoon in a beer garden and one last lazy stroll around town where you can get away with wearing sunglasses and no coat! Sending Large Love xx

Band on The Wall Band on the Wall returns to its rightful place as Manchester’s definitive musical home from 25th September. Kicking off its first season since closing over four years ago with ‘Back To Our Place’, a month long showcase. Highlights include a dynamic double bill from soul diva ‘Mica Paris’ and legendary jazz pianist ‘Julian Joseph’, funk pioneers ‘A Certain, Ratio’ and an unplugged gig by Nine Below Zero. Band on the Wall has been sorely missed in this city since its demise and the month long showcase offers a diverse range of acts, giving fans a taste of what’s to come.
The venue has been totally transformed with a state of the art sound system and grand piano. A new addition is ‘The Picture House’ which is an education space for schools and colleges to learn the ins and outs of the musical trade. Band on The Wall is also the only North West venue to be nominated for a prestigious jazz award for having a pivotal role in developing British Jazz. Fans are urged to sign up to the venues mailing list at: www.bandonthewall.org to stay abreast of the action.

Arcadia 84, Great Ancoats Street, Manchester, M4 5BG www.arcadia-estates.co.uk The Northern Quarter area of the city is expanding rapidly and a new edition to this is Arcadia. Not on the usual bar circuits this venue is positioned on Great Ancoats Street, but it’s buzzing away on the fringes and shouldn’t be overlooked. The owners felt this particular part of town was crying out for some life so Arcadia was born. With a very sleek, chic and minimal interior, customers will get a warm and friendly welcome. The bar plays
house music, from Progressive to Brazilian and Balearic and has just launched a night with Nik Denton (Federation, Organic, Gatecrasher) every Saturday from 10-2am. Open from Wednesday to Sunday it offers an innovative drinks menu and table service, something you hardly get in any bars in town.

Benefit Beauty Bar Benefit has reigned as a quirky cosmetics brand in the UK since 1997 and now the Trafford Centre is going to house one of the first Benefit Brow Bars in its Debenhams store. The brand was first launched back in 1976 by twin sisters selling make up products in San Francisco. In the States, Benefit arches over 900 brows a day and now lucky Manchester folk can get in on the act. In the UK Benefit has eight Brow Bars and they firmly believe a brow arch is like a mini eye lift.
You get the full works here, tinting, waxing, plucking and they are soon to offer Fake Bake tanning so it’s a one stop beauty shop! The philosophy is like a sweet shop but with cosmetics and grooming products. After your eye brows are preened to perfection they even cover up the redness and re-apply any make up needed. The Brow Bars will be popping up across the country with another 30 planned by the end of the year. It’s £11.50 for a Brow Arch and £18 for a Brow Tint and Arch. NEW TO MANCHESTER...
A young artist that’s just popped up on the Large radar is Mark Robinson. After losing his father to cancer (who was his biggest fan), Mark is determined to complete university and become an established artist which there is no doubt will happen. His motto is ‘art for all’ not wanting to put up restrictions on art and hoping that there’s something in his paintings that appeals to everyone. Dress Making at Rags to Bitches Vintage boutique Rags To Bitches runs regular dressmaking courses to teach customers how to run up their own beautiful clothes for a fraction of the price. Courses include ‘How To Make A
Dress’, ‘Beginners’ ‘Pattern Cutting’ and ‘How To Use Your Sewing Machine’ which runs through the functions of the machine and customising so you can alter garments and give them a new lease of life. This month Large tests out tasty Thai restaurants in Manchester:
Vermillion Hulme Hall Lane, Lord North Street, Mcr, M40 8AD www.vermillioncinnabar.com
Large Rating 7/10
Slightly out of town at Sports City lies Vermillion, a grandly designed restaurant packed with plush furnishings and an impressive menu. The interior is beautiful with authentic Asian theming and luxurious gold and red decor throughout. The menu is Asian fusion and filled with fresh flavours. Vermillion imports the more exotic items on the menu from Asia such as Ocean Tiger Prawns from the Bay of Bengal. The menu is extensive to say the least, bursting with Asian and Indian inspired dishes.
For starters we tried out the Thai Fish Cakes (£6.90) which were packed full of fish and so meaty. Served with a delicious cucumber sauce made with red chillies and shallots which complimented the dish perfectly. The Achari Chicken Tikka (£7.50) is cooked in a clay oven and was served with a side salad. The huge chunks of chicken were really moist and succulent however very spicy so not for the faint hearted, a bit too spicy for my liking. For mains we tried Penang Nue (£12.50) sliced beef fillet in Penang curry sauce. Really delicious and
creamy served with light and fluffy jasmine rice. We also tried the Ped Nam Makam (£12.90), grilled marinated Barbary duck breast which was cooked to perfection, not too rare and not overcooked, just pink enough. The duck was served on a bed of asparagus spears with a sweet Tamarind sauce. The Tamarind sauce was slightly bitter, so it’s perhaps not to everyone’s taste. There are some extravagant dishes on the menu if you want
to eat like a Thai King including Grilled Ocean Tiger Prawns to start for £14.95 or the Tandoori Mixed Grill Feast for £16.95 nestled along an impressive range of salads, sushi and a delightful range of desserts including Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango (£8.50) and Coconut Panna Cotta (£7.50). The Cinnabar upstairs is a decadent place to relax after dinner with a cocktail and enjoy the plush surroundings.

Koh Samui 16 Princess Street, Manchester, M1 4NB kohsamuirestaurant.co.uk
Large Rating 8/10
This little treasure is right in the heart of town on Princess Street and has been operating for over 10 years now. It’s very subtly decorated with authentic Thai touches here and there and you get a really warm welcome on arrival from staff with huge smiles. The menu is infused with flavours from southern and central Thailand and is so extensive there is something for every palate. To start with we tried out Southern Style Salad with Chicken Satay (£6.45) which was a meal in itself. It was very substantial, light and refreshing with heaps of salad and succulent chicken pieces. We also tried the Grilled Seafood Skewer (£7.45), marinated tiger prawns, scallop and mussels. The
marinade was just spicy enough to have a kick and served with a chilli and sesame seed oil dressing. There was too much to choose from for main meals but we settled on Green Chicken Thai Curry (£8.45) which was divine. Made with traditional ingredients and tasted sublime. Secondly we opted for an authentic Phad Thai, a huge portion of tasty noodles, with a subtle lemon infused flavour and served with bean sprouts and a side of crushed peanuts, dried chillies and sugar to taste. This dish again was cooked just perfectly and so filling. There’s so much variety on the menu and it’s all very reasonably priced. The restaurant specialises in fish and seafood so try out
the Samui Fish (£12.95), sliced halibut deep fried with spicy Thai salad or Sweet and Sour Whole Seabass (£15.95) deep fried with onions, tomatoes, cucumber and pineapple in sweet and sour sauce. If desserts are your thing then there are plenty of traditional favourites to choose from including Banana Fritter and Vanilla Ice Cream (£4.50) and Thai Mango with Raspberries and Raspberry Pavalova Ice Cream (£4.50). This really is a hidden gem in Manchester and is busy most nights of the week, purely an indication of the excellent food and friendly service on offer.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT - CENTRE STAGE...
Manchester Theatre Manchester has an abundance of theatres from the traditional and ornately designed Opera House to the contemporary and modern Green Room. For most productions, to get on a Manchester stage is a great achievement and always in front of rapturous audiences. It’s not only mainstream theatre you can see in Manchester, there are a fair few smaller theatres showcasing theatrical master pieces such as The Dance House and Contact Theatre so something to suit every budget and taste. In a glowing tribute to the creativity in this city, two leading
festivals have offered audiences the opportunity to see theatre in unconventional settings. ’24:7 Theatre Festival’ has just celebrated its fifth birthday. This theatre festival gives actors, directors and writers a platform to get their work showcased in what can often seem like an over competitive market. ‘Not Part Of’ is the fringe festival to Manchester International Festival and early this year showcased amongst many other entertainment forms a glittering array of performances, mostly from un-known writers and actors, all coming together to celebrate the diversity found in Manchester.

CITY CENTRE POLICING...
Hi All, Last month I told you all about the summer operation, Operation Tennis, well this is now well under way and going well. There were 46 arrests made in the first week of the operation, 221 people stopped and either spoken to or searched, 45 alcohol confiscations from people openly drinking alcohol on the streets in no alcohol zones and nine people given directions to leave the area to prevent anti social behaviour linked to alcohol. There has been a 42 per cent reduction in crime in the areas covered by the operation, which is great news for those that work, live in and visit the city, ultimately Large readers. My team are now planning for when students return to Manchester, putting together an operation to ensure these young people who are away from home for the first time are given advice and support to prevent them becoming victims of crime. Operation Torch will start on the 18th September and you will see extra officers patrolling the streets. There will also be plain-clothes officers in these areas to give us the best possible opportunities to deal with people who are intent on committing crime. To contact the Neighbourhood Team about any issues you wish to discuss please call 0161 856 3221 or email us at a1apt@gmp.police.uk Stay safe, Jo
Crime reduction tip of the month
Busy summer months see an increase in vehicles into the city centre, please make sure you remove all valuables from your car and wipe away satellite navigation system marks from your windscreen. Most car parks have wipes for you to use and make sure your vehicle is locked up when you leave it.

largeOutdoors.com - Event Diary...
largeOutdoors.com We’re about to say goodbye to summer but we’ve had great fun getting out and about exploring the great British countryside. Last month we had an action packed Sunday at Go Ape in Buxton, swinging from trees and doing our best Tarzan impressions. We also had a very wet camping weekend in North Wales. The sun wasn’t shining but it was laughsa-plenty around the campfire, lots of gorgeous food and drink and a few beautiful walks thrown in for good measure. Large Outdoors is the perfect place for individuals and groups alike to
come together, meet new friends, socialise and get active. We’re all guilty of spending too much time sat on our backsides so this is the perfect place to get some fresh air and get your legs moving! Just because we’re heading into the colder time of the year, we’re still holding events year round and think there’s no better time to don warmers and sit around the camp fire with a hot drink so join us for one of our events. All of our events cost £55 all inclusive (apart from any alcoholic drinks you wish to bring).
Walking and White Water Rafting Snowdonia, North Wales 18th - 20th of September This weekend in North Wales is in a beautiful little Bunk House. We have exclusive use of the Bunkhouse and Friday night will start with a welcome buffet (we ask that you bring two items) then after a few drinks to help us get to know each other, it’s off to bed as we have an early start. Both mornings you will be treated to a full welsh breakfast of local produce making sure you are ready for the day ahead. A full packed day of walks in some of the most stunning scenery North Wales has to offer is on the agenda. Then it’s back to the bunk house for a BBQ in their unique BBQ hut perfect for protecting from the Welsh weather. Sunday morning you have the choice between walking or White Water Rafting in Bala.
