Manchester Hello one and all,

Autumn if officially in full swing and Manchester is looking like a pretty picture with a scattering of leaves on the ground and a crispness to the air. Many of you may feel like hibernating but don’t! There’s so much to do at this time of the year in the city; find a cosy pub and tuck into a hearty Sunday roast or get out and explore undiscovered parts of the city whilst stopping off for regular brew breaks. We’re very proud to announce that we’re half a year old with October being our sixth issue and we’re excited for what the remainder of the year has in store at Large HQ. We’ve just launched Large Students so keep your eyes peeled for that one when you’re out and about. Special thanks go out to all the lovely folk who have emailed in to rave about Large and tell us just how much they enjoy the magazine. Once again Large is packed full of great recommendations this month; places to go, things to do and goods to sample. We have our regular pub quiz taking place at The English Lounge on Wednesday 21st October so come and join us for a great night. Until next time.... Residents set to Recycle Thousands of Manchester folk living in flats will now be able to recycle, the City Council has just announced. 36,000 flats this autumn will be receiving recycling facilities for paper, cardboard, drinks cartons, glass, plastic, bottles and cans. This will hopefully reduce the city’s waste going into landfill by at least a fifth.

Per-fekt Beauty It’s the modern day drama we encounter on a daily basis, too much to do and too little time. Step into the spot light, Per-Fekt. Created by Richard Anderson due to the frustrations he heard continually from women when it came to beautifying ‘I don’t have time’ Per-Fekt is a range of products to minimise the amount of time you have to spend preening. The products are concentrated, pretty much three in one so say goodbye to days of concealer, foundation and powder, this is a one shop product range. The collection includes a Body Perfection Gel, almost like a sheer fake tan that evens out skin tone across the body but doesn’t run (essential in Manchester on those rainy days), Eye Per-fekt Gel which does a remarkable job on diminishing puffy eyes and bags, airbrushing in a mini tube almost

and Skin Perfection Gel, facial make up in one, leaving you with a luminous, translucent facial finish. The best bit if that all the products are compact so the bottom of your hand bag doesn’t have to resemble a make up counter. If it’s good enough for Paris Hilton and Reese Witherspoon then it’s certainly good enough for us! Available exclusively in Manchester at Harvey Nichols. www.perfektbeauty.com

If there’s one thing the recession has tuned us into, is the art of snapping up a bargain. Meal deals are now on our radar as we’ve become accustomed to saving where we can. Manchester has a magnitude of great meal deals on offer but Large has scouted out our top two for you to indulge in whilst taking care of your back pocket.

Linen

Manchester 235 Casino, Great Northern Warehouse M3 4LP Large Rating: 8/10

on the menu, its quality food at a quality price. Starters include Crayfish Cakes Guised as a casino, there are two with Lemon and Lime Béarnaise wonderful restaurants hidden Sauce which my dining partner within 235, Linen being one of informed me were delicious and them. Decadently decorated with packed full of fish and fluffy potato exuberant furnishings and an with a delightful fried crusty shell. intimate atmosphere, Linen, on Other options from the starters looks alone looks extravagant and include Soup of the Day or Sautéed expensive. Chicken Livers with Onion, Thyme However, if you look a little closer and Toasted Brioche. Linen does an excellent meal offer, For mains I opted for Pork Chop two courses for £10 or for £15 served with Apple Mash and you get two courses, a pick and Sautéed Carrots, not a huge mix and a cinema ticket for the portion but just enough (left AMC Cinema next door (selected enough room for the pick and options from the menu, excluding mix!) and beautifully presented. I Saturdays). Don’t be wary, we’re was slightly dubious of the Apple not talking about the bum choices Mash at first but it was really

tasty. We also tried Goosenargh Chicken Breast with Chunky Chips, Portobello Mushroom, Confit Cherry Tomatoes and Peppercorn Sauce; tender Chicken Breast on the bone that was seasoned perfectly. If you have more of a sweet

tooth, skip the starters and save room for the desserts, I definitely recommend the Chocolate Fudge Cake which was huge and extremely moorish, exactly the way Chocolate Fudge Cake should be!

Walrus

TUMMY RUMBLES...

78-88 High Street, Manchester, M4 1ES Large Rating: 7/10 Walrus has proven to be a great addition to the Northern Quarter bar scene but many over look their food offerings. The food served is Japanese cuisine fused with a hint of Thai and the menu tries to encourage healthy eating. They do a cracking offer on food from Monday to Friday (12-8pm) and Saturday (12-5pm) you get two courses from the menu and a glass of house wine or a beer for just ÂŁ10. Walrus is a bit rough around the edges with it being packed with revellers come the weekend however the food is pretty good. The Kushiyaki, tender meats on a stick with Yakitori Sauce are divine. The Beef and Red Onion is a must try. Other starters include Salt and Pepper Squid with Sweet Chilli, Papaya Som Tam Salad and we

were reliably informed that the Black Pepper Baby Back Ribs are to die for. For mains, we tried out Yellow Chicken Curry, cooked to perfection with fluffy Thai Rice, just creamy enough and really filling. The Beef Mussaman Curry again I’m told is a must eat but as it’s made with slow braised beef, it can take days to cook so try and catch it when you can. For noodle lovers you can get lost in translation in noodle soup. The Chilli Beef Raman is lovely, made with huge slices of Sirloin Steak, coriander, chillis and a squeeze of lime. There’s also a lot on the menu for vegetarians so Walrus caters for everyone. Wise up people, save where you can, eat well and go mental for meal deals in Manchester!

GOINGS ON IN THE CITY - OCTOBER...

18th-20th October In The City was launched way back in 1992 when the UK didn’t have a music industry convention. ITC promotes the need for innovative, rebellious, forwardthinking creativity bringing characters from music, film, photography, art and new media together to debate, discuss, educate, inspire and showcase.

Free for Arts Festival This year, ITC is back with their now legendary unsigned line up. Bands already confirmed include Frightened Rabbit, Bicycle Thieves, Me Vs Hero, Simon Lynge, Telegraphs, Tek One, Cars on Fire, Young Guns and Attack Attack with more being added every day. The theme of this year’s Festival is sustainability and reducing food waste, something highly important, especially for students. Love Food, Hate Waste will be on hand throughout the festival offering great recipes so you’ll be fully equipped in being frugal and not unnecessarily wasteful.

The Manchester Food and Drink Festival The Manchester Food and Drink Festival returns from 1st12th October with twelve days of foodie-loving fantastic events celebrating all things yummy in the North West. The city will be set alight with celebrity chefs, cookery demos, whisky tasting, wine tasting, fine foods and every ingredient known to man in celebrating good food in Manchester. This year’s festival is focused on highlighting the best of Manchester, flying in the face of the recession in celebrating eating out.

New events include the first ever wine festival at Urbis and Whiskey Festival at the Museum of Science and Industry. There’s also a Fine Food Market in St Anne’s Square as well as the Festival Finale in Albert Square (8-11 October) with the cities best restaurants, brands and brewers all on display. Returning for the second year is the Manchester Ale Festival featuring small breweries from across Greater Manchester. So eat, drink and be very merry.

We are a nation of wasters. In fact did you realize that people in the UK throw away enough food each year to fill Wembley Stadium eight times over? In terms of that wasted food being produced, stored and getting into our homes, it would save 18 million tons of the stuff, taking 1 in 5 cars off the road. Families could be saving up to £50 per month in just simply making the most of the food already in the house.

Sugar Mouse Designs In her spare time away from the dusty libraries of Oxford University, Manchester lady, Faridah Newman likes to keep busy. Having initially started Sugar Mouse in 2004 as an outlet to sell her sewing creations, she soon realised a sewing machine was too noisy an addition to university life so she resolved to a pair of jewellery pliers, a saw and a drill – which actually turned out to be just as noisy but twice as fun. Mixing vintage finds and handworked brass with painstaking detail and innovation, Sugar Mouse offers beautiful individual

pieces, all at £10.00 or below. Each piece is totally unique, with themes ranging from the art of the love letter, to the high seas and children’s stories; Sugar Mouse provides many different ways to perk up your jewellery box without emptying your purse. Faridah has an online jewellery shop but is hoping that Sugar Mouse eventually makes it from screen to physical shop in the near future. She’s done well so far with her pieces being picked up in national fashion magazines and this lady is still at university studying for a triple honours

degree, so after lectures and essays the jewellery making equipment comes out! It’s all made from re-worked vintage materials that Faridah trawls through markets and sales for, pressing, trimming and filing the brass herself; truly inspirational proving that it’s not all about mass produced, faceless fashion. Bolton based Kat Dibbits is a jewellery designer who has seen her sales grow rapidly during the economic downturn as customers are investing more wisely in one of a kind, speciality items. She uses vintage jewellery sourced from flea markets and junk shops and transforms them into new pieces that can be worn and loved again, glamorous recycling you may say! It all started when Kat was riffling through her draw of broken bits of jewellery and odd earrings, too beautiful to say good bye to but pretty much unwearable. She decided to give them a new lease of life by creating new pieces of jewellery. They are all unique pieces so customers are sure to have a one off. Kat is also an arts journalist and finds inspiration in many theatrical photographs. One of her favourite themes you’ll find spilling into her jewellery is the romance and costumes of ballet productions like Swan Lake juxtaposed with a love of rock and pop music so she tries to give everything fun, funky edge.

Manchester Fashion Network has teamed up with the General Store to give one budding designer the opportunity to get their collection on the High Street. The General Store INDIs awards is the search for Manchester’s best independent and student designers. INDIs stands for ‘Independent Northern Designer In Store’. The winner gets their range on sale at the General Store, in Barton Arcade. Apparently the fashionistas are talking about ‘Glunge’, (glamorous grunge to you and me) as the new fashion trend for Autumn/Winter so Kat’s most recent collection sees pretty ribbon teamed with tough, chunky chains. She also uses Swarovski crystals and fresh water pearls in many pieces. With prices ranging from £8 to £60 there’s something to suit all budgets without breaking the bank. Manchester has a new oasis FOREVER MANCHESTER...

FOREVER MANCHESTER...

Glad to see you back on Forever Manchester Island! October on Manchester Island is all about Food and Drink! Forever Manchester is the movement of choice for the Manchester Food and Drink Festival’s fundraising efforts and we’ve got lots of fab things planned. First up, if you’ve always fancied an allotment, but not got the time to spend hours on your knees cultivating your veg, then why not buy a virtual allotment on Manchester Island? Throughout September and October just visit the island at www.forevermanchester.com and you can choose your allotment plot, and for a donation of just £10 to the fund, can name it, and include a message and a weblink of your choice. All funds raised will go to support healthy eating projects across Greater Manchester along with other money raised directly through the Food and Drink Festival. Secondly watch out for the Festival’s programme of ‘’Dinner in

the City’ events – each night there’ll be a special event in a different venue in the city, and each event will include a fundraising element for Forever Manchester. See www. foodanddrinkfestival.com and the Forever Manchester website for more info and to book tickets. Other updates from the Island this month – we have reached our first fundraising target with £750,000 raised to date – that’s a third of our £2.2million target so thank you for all your support. We’ve got lots more coming up in the next few months so watch this space for more info on our pub quiz and comedy and music nights for starters. And don’t forget you can also listen to the Forever Manchester Radio Show each Sunday from 5pm – 7pm on manchesterradioonline.com. Hope to see you on the Island soon!

The New Children’s Hospital is now open in Manchester, offering state-of-the-art facilities for sick children and their families. It has brought together the services previously provided at Greater Manchester’s much-loved Booth Hall and Pendlebury Children’s Hospitals, which have now closed. The New Children’s Hospital Appeal provides support for projects within the new Hospital. Our appeal raises funds for the latest equipment for diagnosis and treatment and a place for parents to stay close to their child. The Appeal, spearheaded by Bob the Builder™, has a fundraising target of £20m before it closes at the end of this year. With the help of our many supporters across the North West we’ve already raised £18.2m, but we need a big push to hit the final target.

The Gaynor family from Tyldsley know only too well how difficult it is to have a child in hospital for a long period of time. Their daughter Aimee was treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, then at Pendlebury, when she was 2 years old. She spent 14 weeks in hospital receiving many diagnostic scans and a first bout of chemotherapy. The following years saw Aimee in and out of hospital as her weakened immune

system meant even a cold could be a major threat to her health. Aimee is now 6 and attending school and full of energy. During those dark times, Aimee’s family found hospital life became normal life with a pull down bed on the next ward to their daughter.

A MESSAGE FROM GREATER MCR POLICE

STUDENTS HELP POLICE TO DRIVE HOME SAFETY MESSAGE As well as the pads, pens, toasters and posters, Greater Manchester Police is asking students to remember one more thing when they come to the city to start their university life – to stay safe. To prevent you from becoming a victim of crime, GMP has teamed up with a group of design students from Manchester Metropolitan University to create a new marketing campaign designed for students by students. The campaign focuses on robbery and burglary, the two crimes that students are most likely to become victims of. The posters, postcards and other marketing materials are in bright eye-catching colours to drive home messages on how to keep safe by keeping valuables out of sight and shutting and locking all windows and doors. There will be many initiatives in place to help keep new and returning students safe, these include: police officers holding safety talks at all halls of residences that are attached to the universities along with high-visibility and covert patrols in hotspot areas.
