Las Vegas PRIDE has continued to be busy with our monthly Bingo at Alexis Park Resorts Hotel, both the January “Bling Bingo” and the February “Moulin Rouge Musical Bingo” were well attended. We continue to have record breaking crowds as the event grows each month. Mark your calendar for the first Wednesday of each month and join us for a fun evening. Don’t forget you can reserve your table by sending an e-mail to tables@lasvegaspride.org. Please check our website for additional information on Bingo and other events scheduled throughout the year. Las Vegas PRIDE was proud to host this year’s annual meeting for Consolidated Association of Pride, Inc. (CAPI). This year we hosted the event at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino and had a wonderful attendance. CAPI is an organization inviting the Pride groups in the western half of the country encompassing Washington, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Hawaii and Mexico to get together and share ideas and best practices for their individual prides of any size. how to, from fund raising, parade organization, insurance to Pride Pets! It is a great gathering to share ideas and meet fellow board members from other organizations. Along with the workshops and sharing, Las Vegas PRIDE treated attendees to Las Vegas style entertainment with tickets to Frank Marino’s Divas at The Linq and Cher at The Park Theatre at the Monte Carlo. A fantastic dinner gala was held at Gold Coast with entertainment provided by David Hernandez, Prince Poppycock, DJ Devi Dev and the incomparable Kristine W. CAPI continues to be a sharing group and now includes Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma so it is truly a group that can share ideas to increase Pride’s in the western half of the country.
Sin Sity Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence held their annual Red Dress event at The Space. The annual event was a two day event this year with a Red Dress Review held at Charlie’s on Friday evening prior to the “Art in Sin” Red Dress on Saturday evening. Everyone in attendance at both events had a wonderful time and can’t wait to see what is planned for next year.
The Betty’s held a wonderful Valentines event February 11th at Westgate Resort Hotel a great time was had by everyone attending. The Imperial Royal Sovereign Court of the Desert Empire held many events during the first couple of month of the year, beside crowning new royalty they held a Divesture, Investiture, King & Queen of Hearts crowing with additional events scheduled. March is Women’s History Month, which means it is time to reflect on the past milestones for women, examine the issues facing women today, and celebrate the incredible women who are working to change lives around the world. Lesbian, bisexual and transgender women make up some of the most important female figures in history and have made some of the most important contributions to history.
Tammy Baldwin served as the first openly gay member of the U.S. Senate. Wanda Sykes is an openly lesbian comedian and actress. Anna Paquin is an out bisexual actress. Georgina Beyer was the world’s first openly transgender mayor and Member of Parliament. Today, LGBT women are still making history and shaping our culture. Ellen DeGeneres is one of the most popular figures in all of entertainment. Alice Walker is a Pulitzer Prize winner and one of the most beloved authors and poets in the world. Amanda Simpson is an aerospace expert and one of the first transgender presidential appointees to any federal government. And Iceland’s Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir is the first out lesbian head-of-state in the world.

Within the movement for LGBT equality, many of our trailblazers have been women. Barbara Gittings, Del Martin, Phyllis Lyon, Mandy Carter, Kay Lahusen, Stormé DeLarveri, Anne Kronenberg and LaWana Mayfield. Women allies played a big role moving our culture to where it is today. Figures like Janice Langbehn and Laurel Hester changed countless hearts and minds by telling their stories. And moms like Sirdeaner Walker, Judy Shepard, Elke Kennedy and Tammy Aaberg have fought through personal family tragedies to deliver messages of hope and inspire people to change. Despite the great strides LGBT women have made, there is still more work to do. Not only do women face more discrimination in employment than men. Transgender women, especially
transgender women of color, face a disproportionately higher rate of discrimination in employment, housing and several other areas compared to the general population, according to reports from the National Transgender Discrimination Survey. LGBT women also continue to face high levels of bias-motivated and intimate partner violence. A study by the Williams Institute of UCLA found bisexual women were at an elevated risk of facing intimate partner violence compared to lesbian and heterosexual women. In the 2011 report on anti-LGBT bias-motivated violence by the Anti-Violence Project, transgender women made up 40% of murder victims, but only 10% of violence survivors.
LIV ON, a collaborative eleven-track song cycle intended for those who are coping with grief while walking a journey toward new-found meaning and hope. Newton-John had planned on launching her residency at the Flamingo Las Vegas in the spring of 2013. But the sudden passing of her sister, Rona, sidelined the project for a year. Olivia needed the time to process the loss. Looking for music to help ease her journey through grief, she found there was little music available that directly addressed losses we experience in life. “It evolved out of grief. I lost my sister Rona to a brain tumor. It was sad and shocking, and of course I had a lot of grief,” says Newton-John. “I wrote a song for her, and I explained to my friends that it was the best way for me to explain my feelings. I asked my friend Amy Sky if she would help me with it. I said, ‘You know there’s not much music for people going through grief and loss.’ We talked about creating an album. I thought of Beth, a breast cancer survivor, who wrote an amazing song, ‘Sand and Water,’ when she lost her husband 15 years ago.” This inspiring new project grew out of all three artists’ personal experiences with loss and illness, which they all survived to “Liv On,” and celebrate each day with a depth of gratitude.

We connect to memories through music during difficult times like the loss of a relationship, a pet, one’s health or even a job. While grief has no gender or sexual orientation, LGBTs experience with loss can sometimes be heightened due to prevalence of sexual prejudice, social stigma, heterosexist interpretations about grief and loss,
and lack of support. Without the support of family or friends, due to disapproval or lack of acceptance, the ache can feel exponentially greater. In times of loss, it’s natural that we turn to music for healing. According to grief counselor Marty Tousley, “Music can lift us up, take us out of our current mood, and transport us to another time and place. When we cannot find the words, a particular song may express our thoughts and feelings even better than we are able to do.” need of support to heal through this music. For example, Newton-John explains, “‘Stone In My Pocket’ describes how when you first go through loss and grief, you feel like you are carrying a boulder. The grief comes in waves. Sometime’s it’s a pebble; sometimes it’s a grain of sand. But the stone in your pocket will always be with you. You just feel it differently.” The title song of the album, written for the launch of a new campaign for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre, is about moving forward through stress and grief, and finding life afterwards. The campaign, also titled LIV ON, encourages people to share their own stories at onjcancercentre.org. LIV ON showcases the transforming power of music - to heal and shed light on the fact that it’s OK to grieve – and that the process is different for everyone. The message of LIV ON is clear and affirming: the reason we grieve is because we love, and therein lies the strength for healing.
With the fast-paced society we live in, we are often urged to “get over things.” However, for every individual, grief has its own clock. Olivia, Beth and Amy called upon their personal experiences in creating this collection of songs which will aid, uplift and comfort those working their way through the maze of grief and loss. While taking into consideration the many causes of grief, they hope to provide the unique ability for those in

“Stronger together, we won’t fall! Justice, peace, and equality for all!” echoed throughout the streets of downtown Las Vegas as we marched. Donning our pink pussyhats and empowering slogans emblazoned across our homemade signs, we marched. Unbeknownst to us at the time, we were a part of the largest single-day demonstration in American history. Within 24 hours of Trump’s inauguration, an army of women and allies, roughly 15,000 strong, crowded the streets of downtown Las Vegas, demanding to be heard by the incoming administration in Washington. Our march was one of almost 700 peaceful demonstrations occurring simultaneously around the world. With one voice of outrage, from the streets of Denmark to the markets of Iraq, millions of women and their supporters came together to stand in solidarity against the impending oppression of the right-wing administration. We the people opposed Trump’s rhetoric, condemning it as sexist, racist, homophobic, and xenophobic. Our voices were united, declaring to Donald J. Trump that we would not silently accept the regression of our rights under the incoming administration. The National Women’s March in Washington D.C. was the primary demonstration, and included over a half million participants. Many of these women traveled from across the country, and even the world, to stand in the National Mall and make their voices heard. The National organizers responsible for the rally released a policy platform which addressed a range of issues; including reproductive rights, immigration reform, LGBTQ rights, healthcare reform, religious discrimination (primarily against Muslim Americans), gender and racial inequities, and workers’ rights. Some notable partnering organizations involved included the Nevada 16 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine
WOMEN’S MARCH ON WASHINGTON IN FABULOUS LAS VEGAS By Cristina Di Gioa
National Organization of Women, Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, Battle Born Progress, and the Nevada Advocates of Planned Parenthood Affiliates. Here in Las Vegas, the signs were all supportive and uplifting; we were left with a feeling of hope. There were many men present as well, and some participants used the opportunity to make their opposition to some of Trump’s general stated intentions known, with signs reading “America IS great!” and “Don’t tread on our equality!” The march route began at the corner of 9th and Fremont St and ended at the steps of the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse on Las Vegas Blvd. While thousands of the first marchers waited for thousands more to complete their shared route, many speakers took the stage on the steps of the courthouse. Conversations could be heard all around me about why each woman, and each ally, chose to spend her or his Sunday standing up and protesting. Many specific issues were discussed, but all felt that their rights (or the rights of those they loved) would be under attack by the Trump administration. The issues I heard most frequently included restricting women’s access to healthcare, looming anti-immigration executive orders, and fears of disappearing LGBTQ protections. We Nevadans are fortunate to have so many politicians who are looking to keep the Battle Born State on the forefront of progress. Those politicians have been our allies in many social justice battles. Some of our local politicians who came to support the march included Congresswoman Dina Titus, Congressman Ruben Kihuen, State Senator Pat Spearman, State Senator Yvanna Cancela, Assemblyman Nelson Araujo, and County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani. Many of our officials addressed the crowd with messages of hope and support.
Roberta Lange, chairwoman of the Nevada State Democratic Party, also addressed the crowd with a rousing speech. As they should have been, the messages from all speakers were very supportive of women’s rights and minority rights. A particularly memorable quote from Congressman Kihuen, speaking about Latinos in America, was: “Not everybody [are] rapists and criminals. Some of us are members of Congress.” The speakers urged attendees to stay alert and involved in fighting for the rights they had gained during the Obama administration. One of the
most concrete calls to action came from Kiyana Asemanfar, of For Nevada’s Future, who had the crowd pull out their cell phones and save the phone number of Senator Dean Heller’s office. At her insistence, the crowd made an audible promise to call his office and voice their disapproval of the Trump administration’s stated intentions to “defund” Planned Parenthood. It is important to note that Planned Parenthood does not receive any dedicated federal funds. It only receives federal funds in the form of Medicaid and Title X reimbursement (which many medical clinics receive). Furthermore, federal funds cannot be used for abortion services (due to the 1976 Hyde Amendment), with three very narrow exceptions adopted in 1994 (e.g. pregnancy resulting from rape, incest, or when it results in a woman’s life being in danger). Fellow LGBTQ activist Gary Brewer, who marched by my side as an ally, remembers the march this way: “Standing among all those people, in that moment of time, it just felt like the right place to be at the right time. Looking back, we know we were a part of history, the right part of history, and we did our part to stand up and be seen, to be heard.” Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 17

Mervat Berry is a self-made business owner, ally, and mother, but she’s hardly stopping there. She’s agreed to sit down with us and discuss some of her next big business moves, and what it means to balance several flourishing businesses with philanthropy and motherhood.
my companies 10 years ago and I definitely sacrificed a huge part of myself throughout that time. That was one of the hardest things, just staying dedicated and keeping my eye on the goal through both the hard times and the great times. Your business can go up and down. I always try to stay positive and dedicated to my work, Q: You’ve been so successful in your and to focus on never losing sight of role as an entrepreneur, what are my goal. Regardless of what was going your suggestions for women looking to follow in your footsteps and grow their own businesses? A: One of my primary motivations is inspiring others, especially women, and empowering them to grow to their fullest potential. My biggest piece of advice to women that are just starting out would be to do their best to stay focused, positive, and dedicated. Dedication and sacrifice have been the largest contributors to my success, especially in the beginning. Now I’m getting to the point where I can relax a little bit and start to really enjoy my time, especially with my daughter, but for many, many years I sacrificed a lot of my social life. I started building 26 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine
on with the business, I stayed positive and I believed in myself. Q: If you had to give your 25-yearold self one piece of career or life advice, what would it be? A: I was a completely different person at 25 so this is tough, but if I look back I remember that I was spreading myself very thin. I own three separate companies, and I was very active in all three of my companies at that time; I tried to take on everything. I’ve since learned that if I spread myself thin I can be good at three different things, but I’m not going to excel in any one of them. I would tell my younger self to pick one thing, and to make that one project as amazing as I possibly could. I turn down so many different business opportunities now, even if they’re tempting, because I’ve committed to what I’m doing with the boutique and the tanning salon. If I decide to transition in a couple of years that’s fine, but I’m committed to my current project, and to making it the very best that it can be. Q: Tell me a little about your businesses? A: I started out with an event production company, and that’s how
and on top of that, I am excited to announce that we will be going live with the boutique’s website within the next couple of months, which should be a really exciting expansion. Q: Tell me about your involvement with the LGBTQ community and with PRIDE?
I first became acquainted with PRIDE. I’ve put on a lot of LGBTQ events, and I am the original founder, creator, and producer of Temptation Sundays, the first LGBTQ pool party on the Las Vegas Strip. Luxor is actually still hosting that event to this day. I went on to produce Hydrate Sundays at Mandalay Bay, and then the Sunkissed Sundays pool party which I transitioned into my first Sunkissed Tanning Salon location in 2014 and within a couple of years I had opened a second location. I expanded the second location with a full women’s retail boutique which features 2,000 ft. of handbags, jewelry, accessories, jeans, shoes, tops, dresses, and one-of-a-kind, high quality items, and we were so excited to become the official tanning
salon of The Chippendales. We offer services such as spray tanning, UV tanning, red light therapy, body wraps for weight loss, and a large variety of other services at our tannins salons
My involvement with the community started with my LGBTQ pool parties, Sunkissed Sundays and Hydrate Sundays. I also really enjoy giving back to the community, and every Sunday we would have a different charity organization at the events, so PRIDE was there several times. We had all sorts of organizations there, and proceeds from the beer buckets that we sold would go to that organization that would also be there representing their mission and outreach. Having the opportunity to give back like that was really important to me, and it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with PRIDE. I still do a lot of work with PRIDE with my tanning salon and boutique, including donations for their bingo, and I place ads in the magazines. I am always more than happy to give back and help in any possible way that I can. While I donate to many organizations, a piece of me is definitely tied to the LGBTQ community. It’s grown to be such a big part of me, my career, and my friends; it’s just built into me now after many, many years of working together.

my attitude aside when dealing with certain models or celebrities! Q: Are there any obstacles in your career that you have faced as a woman, that you feel that men in the same position may not face, and are there any particular advantages? A: Fortunately, the fashion industry is largely run by women, so there are not as many obstacles based on gender. If anything, as a stylist working with models and designers, I find that they are often more comfortable working with and taking fashion advice from a woman or a gay man. My long term goal is to open my own modeling and stylist agency, so I think that I may face some new challenges as a woman business owner.

Celebrity stylist, performer, and trans idol; Keyska Diva holds all of these titles, and her resume continues to grow. From her humble roots, to styling celebrities and rocking a pair of heels like nobody’s business, Keyska has fearlessly blazed a trail for other young trans women; her persistence and hard work has served her well, and she hopes to inspire other young women to pursue their dreams. Q: Were there any challenges that you face during your transition that you would like to share with other young women? If so, how did you overcome these challenges? A: My main challenge turned out to be myself. Growing up in my generation there was no Caitlin Jenner or Laverne Cox to look up to, so I had no role model in the media to look up to. It took me awhile to feel comfortable enough with myself to tell my family, who I am very close with, that I

It’s hard to sum up the caliber of a woman like my mother in 480 words or less. I have never seen a person raise 2 kids on their own, work multiple jobs and struggle to put food on the table while making it seem effortless. Growing up, we didn’t have much, but I never felt it. In her eyes, her son could do anything he dared to dream and not just survive, but thrive. In short, she beat all of the odds and taught me to do the same. Spring Hernandez is the toughest woman I know. Born in Phoenix, AZ, March 21, 1966, she immediately became a single mother just months after her 17th birthday when she gave birth to me. But, despite the obstacles, we always overcame. My mom and my grandmother were the dream team in raising me and instilled an enormous amount of confidence in the man I was soon to become. 60 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine
To this day, I will tell you that mom is my best friend. Many people throw that word around but she is the ultimate definition of loyalty and love that has never failed me. She is front row at every one of my shows and the first to answer the phone when my heart is broken. It is a relationship not many people have with their parent(s) nor completely understand. We can share anything with each other without judgment. Anything. My mom is about as real as they come and I cannot imagine my life without her. She is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most important person in my life, full of strength and wisdom. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t t express my love for her and the gift that is my life.
