LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT THINGS BI CORNER By Steve Mitchell What do you see when you look around you? Open doors or closed doors? Winning or losing? Recent studies in psychology tell us that we can, and do, program our brains. That programming ultimately determines the outcomes, experiences and emotions in our lives. Most people program their brains without realizing that they do it. The good news is that we can reprogram our brains for happiness and success in all areas of life. The LGBTQ community is, in some ways, no different than any other community. It is made up of people from all walks of life – some rich, some poor, some in the middle. On the other hand, it is a community of people with a few very important things in common. In many ways, LGBTQ people are still marginalized. Marginalization separates one as being “different than the others”.

That aspect of marginalization is powerfully negative. But that also creates a dynamic which is positive. A lot of people who have been marginalized are now a group of people tied together by that marginalization and a community is born. Yes, people have their differences but they share a very powerful common denominator – they have been pushed out of the “normal” circles (as defined by society) but the commonalities of that marginalized group create a new normal. How do you see your experience? Is it one of being pushed out of a group or being pushed INTO a group? This is an area where one can re-train their brain. How do you view that experience? We don’t see what we are not looking for. If you view your experience as being pushed out of somewhere then you set an expectation that you will face

rejection again. You will look for it and you will find it because you view everything through the that filter. If, on the other hand, you view your experience as being pushed into a community of people who are like you, and you, therefore, feel welcome, you will expect to be welcomed. You will look for experiences that validate that and you will find them because you are looking for them. Our ability to do this is a gift. And it may be the greatest gift we’ve been given. I challenge you to understand your filters and change them where they need changing. Expect kindness. Expect acceptance, especially in the LGBTQ community. Expect friendship. You will find those things because they are all around you. You may be missing them because your filter is set to find the opposite. Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 11

PALAZZO WATERFALL ATRIUM AND HOLIDAY GARDENS Featuring trees and golden snowflakes, there’s much a-twinkling at the Palazzo Waterfall Atrium and Gardens. Not to be outdone by the twinkle-ness of the golden snowflakes are the gardens bright flowers consisting of poinsettia’s and other seasonal blooms. The Palazzo’s display is definitely worth a visit and is open 24/7 continuing through the first week of January. Be sure to get a photo of you and yours in front of the waterfall, though there may be a wait as it seems to be a prime spot for Las Vegas selfies.

THE BELLAGIO CONSERVATORY HOLIDAY DISPLAY Each season, the enormously talented horticulturalists and designers who make up the Bellagio Conservatory team transform this 14,000-square-foot floral playground into a showcase of the distinctive sights and colors of spring, summer, fall and winter— each year the theme changes. The Christmas tree is always a show-stopper, and the yearly variations in the displays offer something new each season. Christmas explodes with holiday cheer and makes a wonderful place for pictures. Nothing is spared during the holidays. 34,000 Flowers adorn the display including varieties of Poinsettias, Azalea’s, Cyclamen, and Ottowa Mums. Also included are Silver Tip Trees from Mt. NEW YEAR’S EVE AT FREMONT STREET EXPERIENCE “America’s Party Downtown” will boast 12 bands on three stages, the debut of a new Viva Vision light show from one of the most popular bands in the world, onstage pyrotechnics, an EDM stage and more. New Year’s Eve promises to be the biggest blow-out in all of Las Vegas. Fremont Street Experience has a ton of surprises in store for New Year’s Eve, so don’t miss out! On New Year’s Eve, they are taking the celebration to a new level. In addition to the non-stop live entertainment on three stages, the premiere of a new Viva Vision light show featuring an A-list band, exciting roaming, Broadway-quality entertainment all night long, cool entertainment zones with interactive activities and surprises.

RING IN THE NEW YEAR ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP

Start off right and usher in the New Year with the Mayor of Las Vegas, Carolyn Goodman’s Party with 25,000 of your new best friends at Fremont Street Experience on New Year’s Eve.

It’s safe to say that New Year’s Eve is the busiest time of the year in Las Vegas -- at least when it comes to partying. There’s a lot going on and you need to plan in advance. Las Vegas Blvd will be shut down to traffic from Russell to Sahara -- which means the Strip will be overloaded with pedestrians watching the fireworks shoot from the rooftops of seven casinos.

Get tickets now and cross a major item off your bucket list as you ring in 2018 in downtown Sin City, the original Las Vegas.

If you plan to drive (and you probably shouldn’t), you’ll have to take the side streets and arrive early to score a parking space at one of the casinos. Uber and Lyft are good alternatives although the flexible pricing rates may be through the roof. Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 15

Accessing a Healthier Nevada By Nick Olmstead

Saving lives and giving Nevadans access to the healthcare they deserve has been our mission since 2007 and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Access to Healthcare Network(AHN) is a local non-profit dedicated to assisting individuals and their families in our community in accessing healthcare services and resources to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Access to Healthcare Network has a wide range of programs that can help all different aspects of the community. Our organization started in Northern Nevada in 2007 and has since then grown to become a statewide organization serving thousands of Nevadans. Access to Healthcare Network has been fortunate to be one of the community partners in the state to receive funding to administer several Ryan White Programs. Our funding at Access to Healthcare Network allows us to identify eligible consumers living with HIV/AIDS as well as providing Medical, Dental, Vision, Insurance, & Medical Case Management assistance. Getting Nevadans to an undetectable state is an everyday fight, and one that we at AHN are never going to stop fighting for. Access to Healthcare Network is one of the organization in the state of Nevada that receives funding for ADAP (Aids Drug Assistance Program) funding.

The ADAP program allows us to assist consumers with their allowable medication costs so that they can be assured they won’t have a lapse in their medication. This program is just one of many services we provide in partnership with Nevada’s Ryan White Programs.

helping to ensure that Nevadans throughout the state have access to the care they need and deserve.

ESSENTIAL VIEWING FOR

Christmakwanzakah AND BOXING DAY TOO! By Paul Cieslewicz

Ah, the Holidays! That joyous time of year when we judge Starbucks cups, brace ourselves for “the war on Christmas” and dream of ‘Dexter’ing our relation. Karen Walker said it best on Will & Grace, when she stated, “It’s Christmas, for goodness sake! Think about the baby Jesus: up in that tower, letting his hair down... so that the three wise men can climb up and spin the dreidel and see if there are six more weeks of winter.” There are plenty of traditional holiday films and specials out there, but what do you watch when you’re exhausted by It’s A Wonderful Life, White Christmas, The Polar Express, Die Hard and Batman Returns (technically the last two do take place during the Christmas season)? I just so happen to have some quirky alternatives for when Will Ferrell’s 90-minute sugar rush in Elf becomes too much to handle. So grab your funny bone and a cuddle buddy, pause Eugene Ormandy & The Philadelphia Orchestra’s “I Wonder As I Wander” or Bob Rivers’ “The Twelve Pains of Christmas” (essential holiday listening!), and settle in for a long winter’s viewing of not-so-obvious holiday favorites…of mine, of course. Putting the “fun” in dysfunctional, Home for the Holidays, Jodie Foster’s

ode to holiday family gatherings, shows us the sometimes painfully funny side of Thanksgiving dinner. The film stars Holly Hunter as an overwhelmed daughter who loses her job and gets told by her own daughter that she will probably sleep with her boyfriend while her mom is away, all just before departing to see her family in Baltimore. If that weren’t enough already, she must deal with a perfectionist sister (Cynthia Stevenson) and her equally annoying husband and children and her gay brother (Robert Downey Jr. in full man-child improv mode), whom she suspects is having relationship problems when he shows up with a very handsome “friend” (Dylan McDermott) instead of his longtime boyfriend. Charles Durning and the legendary Anne Bancroft, proving she was Mrs. Robinson to the end, play the parents. Watching this every year reminds me of my family gatherings, from the various clashes to the loving nostalgia involved. It’s a reminder that you can’t pick your family, but they are family nonetheless.

Kristin Chenoweth, of Wicked, Glee, Pushing Daisies and countless other gay viewing requirements, Anna Chlumsky (pre-Veep) and Josh Hopkins, who himself is a gay viewing requirement. The story follows Chenoweth’s E.J., a disgraced New York City publicist, who catches her boss and her fiancé shtupping each other at the office Christmas party. To get away from it all, E.J. takes a job in Montana where she forms a “love to hate, hate to love” relationship with Hopkins’ Will, a member of the town’s Rescue Squad. From that relationship comes the inspiration to turn the town’s boring scenic calendar into a studly shirtless calendar featuring the members of the Search & Rescue team that will also help raise money for new equipment. As with most Lifetime Television movies, 12 Men of Christmas is a tad predictable, but Chenoweth never lets the energy or charm wane. You might also find yourself experiencing a mighty thirst when E.J. and Will first meet as he exits a friends’ swimming pool. People with pacemakers beware!

Not all my recommendations are theatrical releases, as evidenced by 12 Men of Christmas, a Lifetime Television network movie (stop rolling your eyes!). 12 Men… stars

Remember when watching Kevin Spacey was cool? When watching the brilliant performances in The Usual Suspects, American Beauty or House of Cards wasn’t overshadowed by a

general sense of creepiness? The good news is that you can watch The Ref without that feeling of dread, as it is Denis Leary who carries the movie with his trademark snarkiness, and Spacey’s bitter husband spends a portion of the film tied to a chair with a gag in his mouth. The story revolves around Gus (Leary), a down on his luck burglar whose latest attempt at thievery bites him in the butt (literally), his getaway driver abandons him, and he is now wanted in a prestigious Connecticut community. In desperation he takes a bickering couple, Lloyd & Caroline (Spacey & Judy Davis), hostage as they are returning from a tumultuous couples’ counseling session on Christmas Eve. Gus soon realizes the error of his ways, as the arguing couple’s equally off-kilter family soon begins to join them, starting with their shipped-offto-military-school son, followed by Lloyd’s brother and sister-in-law with their two kids and his overbearing mother. Christine Baranski as the sister-in-law, Connie, has one of the darkest comedic Christmas lines of all-time: “That is not the spirit of Christmas. The spirit of Christmas is either you’re good, or you’re punished, and you burn in hell!” The Ref comes highly recommended for those who like their Christmas comedy pitch black! Speaking of dark holiday comedies, in my opinion nothing tops Gremlins, the granddaddy of all Christmas mischievousness. Many films have tried to equal Gremlins perfect balance of Christmas cuteness and dark comedy, including 2010’s Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale and 2015’s Krampus, but none have quite succeeded the way Gremlins does.

From the adorable introduction of Gizmo, the film’s innocent non-mischievous Mogwai, who unintentionally gives birth to the nasty green counterparts when “the rules” aren’t followed, to the leader of the gremlins, Stripe, escaping the theater when the rest of the gremlins are destroyed in an explosion while singing “Heigh Ho” from Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, to the caroling gremlins that launch a woman from her home in a stairway lift chair (“Deagle! Deagle! Deagle!”), Gremlins is full of memorable moments that make it an underrated

Christmas classic. Just don’t mention that to Phoebe Cate’s character, Kate, during her infamous “Santa down the chimney” speech! Plus the rules in Gremlins could apply to many people in the gay community today: “(1) No bright light, (2) don’t get him wet, and (3) never feed him after midnight, no matter how much he begs.” Paul has been a comic book collector since 1985. This, of course, means he was a comic geek before he was a movie geek. He now understands why he drove his parents crazy in his teenage years.

NEW YOU FOR THE NEW YEAR

WITH THERMA-SLIM! Therma-Slim offers new and innovative procedures for weight loss and body contouring. Our procedures are noninvasive solutions for stubborn body fat, that for most of us, is next to impossible to get rid of. By using specialized Strawberry Lasers, Ultrasonic Cavitation, Vacuum Therapy, Radio Frequency and Full Body Vibration Therapy, we have found a new, convenient and safe way to remove those unwanted pounds and inches almost instantly with little to no down time. All while smoothing out cellulite and gradually tightening and reshaping the body. Laser Lipo has gained a lot of traction in the last five years and continues to be on the cutting edge of weight loss alternatives. It has become the go to procedure for anyone who is trying to lose those extra unwanted inches from the arms, abdomen, obliques, back, glutes and legs. Therma-Slims Laser Lipo procedures use medical grade, low level “Strawberry lasers to heat up and dilate the pores of each individual fat cell. This allows for the fat cell lipids to slowly excrete out of the fat cell and then is metabolized through the kidneys and the liver and ultimately removed by way of the lymphatic system. After the fat cells have expanded, we then use Ultrasonic Cavitation to create air 60 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine

bubbles in side of the fat cell, actively pushing the lipids out of the cell, allowing the cell to collapse or deflate completely. Then Vacuum Therapy and Radio Frequency are used on the treated area to further break down and smooth out cellulite while assisting the body in creating more collagen to give your body a tight and tone appearance. Finally, Full Body Vibration Therapy is used to help the body metabolize and process out the unwanted fat while also gradually increasing circulation and lymphatic drainage. At Therma-Slim, we understand that each person is on their own path to weight loss and because of that, we

create customized individual treatment plans for each person depending on their own needs. Whether you are just starting your weight loss journey or are looking for a quick way to tighten and tone your body, Therma-Slim can help you get there. What Is HIV? HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It is the virus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS, if not treated. Unlike some other viruses, the human body can’t get rid of HIV completely, even with treatment. So once you get HIV, you have it for life. HIV attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which help the immune system fight off infections. Untreated, HIV reduces the number of CD4 cells (T cells) in the body, making the person more likely to get other infections or infection-related cancers. Over time, HIV can destroy so many of these cells that the body can’t fight off infections and disease. These opportunistic infections or cancers take advantage of a very weak immune system and signal that the person has AIDS, the last stage of HIV infection.

What Is AIDS? AIDS is the most severe phase of HIV infection. People with AIDS have such badly damaged immune systems that they get an increasing number of severe illnesses, called opportunistic infections.

What Are the Stages of HIV Infection?

Without treatment, HIV advances in stages, overwhelming your immune system and getting worse over time. The three stages of HIV infection are: (1) acute HIV infection, (2) clinical latency, and (3) AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). However, there’s good news: by using HIV medicines (called antiviral therapy or ART) consistently, you can prevent HIV from progressing to AIDS. ART helps control the virus so that you can live a longer, healthier life and greatly reduces the risk of transmitting HIV to others. These are the three stages of HIV infection:

Acute HIV Infection Stage Within 2 to 4 weeks after infection, many, but not all, people develop flu-like symptoms, often described as “the worst flu ever.” Symptoms can include fever, swollen glands, sore throat, rash, muscle and joint aches and pains, and headache. This is called “acute retro viral syndrome” (ARS) or “primary HIV infection,” and it’s the body’s natural response to the HIV infection. People who think that they may have been infected recently and are in the acute stage of HIV infection should seek medical care right away. Starting treatment at this stage can have significant benefits to your health.

Clinical Latency Stage After the acute stage of HIV infection, the disease moves into a stage called the “clinical latency” stage. “Latency” means a period where a virus is living or developing in a person without producing symptoms. During the clinical latency stage, people who are infected with HIV experience no symptoms, or only mild ones. (This stage is sometimes called “asymptomatic HIV infection” or “chronic HIV infection.”)

AIDS This is the stage of HIV infection that occurs when your immune system is badly damaged, and you become vulnerable to opportunistic infections. When the number of your CD4 cells falls below 200 cells per cubic millimeter of blood (200 cells/mm3), you are considered to have progressed to AIDS. (In someone with a healthy immune system, CD4 counts are between 500 and 1,600 cells/mm3.) You are also considered to have progressed to AIDS if you develop one or more opportunistic illnesses, regardless of your CD4 count.

Is There a Cure for HIV? No effective cure currently exists for HIV. But with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. Treatment for HIV is called antiviral therapy or ART. If taken the right way, every day, ART can dramatically prolong the lives of many people infected with HIV, keep them healthy, and greatly lower their chance of infecting others. Before the introduction of ART in the mid-1990s, people with HIV could progress to AIDS (the last stage of HIV infection) in a few years. Today, someone diagnosed with HIV and treated before the disease is far advanced can live nearly as long as someone who does not have HIV. Content Source: CDC’s HIV Basics

How is HIV spread?

HIV is spread mostly through four body fluids: •

semen

vaginal fluid

blood

breast milk

HIV is spread mostly through four body fluids: •

tears

sweat

feces

urine

How is HIV spread through sex? You can get infected from sexual contact with someone who is infected with HIV. Sexual contact that can transmit HIV includes: •

vaginal sex (penis in the vagina)

anal sex (penis in the anus of either a man or a woman)

oral sex (penis in the mouth)

If you have sex, the best thing you can do to prevent HIV infection is practice “safer sex” with any partner who is not proven to be HIV negative (on recent testing). To do so, always use protection--this could include using a condom, dental dam, or other latex barrier, and/or PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis, a daily medication taken daily to prevent HIV). It is also important to avoid “rough sex” or other activities that might cause bleeding. If you use lube with a condom, make sure it is water based, not oil-based. Oil-based lube causes latex condoms to break. if used correctly and consistently, condoms also protect against other sexually transmitted infections and against pregnancy. If you have unprotected sex with someone who is infected, it doesn’t mean that you will be infected, too. But there is always a chance, especially if your partner is not on effective HIV medicines. Using condoms and PrEP reduces your risk.

HIV is NOT spread by: •

hugging or massage

masturbation

fantasizing

dry kissing

phone sex

cyber sex

sex toys you don’t share

daily living with someone who has HIV

How is HIV spread through blood? You can become infected if you have contact with the blood of someone who is infected with HIV. Blood-borne infection with HIV can occur through:

• • • • •

sharing injection equipment when shooting drugs getting tattoos or body piercings with unsterilized needles accidental needle sticks blood transfusions splashing blood in your eyes

HIV is NOT spread by blood passed through insect bites. If you inject drugs, the best thing to do is to use new or sterilized injection equipment every time. You can also take a daily medication called pre-exposure prophylaxis (Prep) to lower your risk of HIV.

Can HIV pass from mothers to their babies? Infection can pass from HIV positive pregnant women to their babies in the womb and during birth. Taking anti-HIV drugs during pregnancy and childbirth dramatically lowers the risk of a baby becoming infected with HIV. After birth, transmission can occur through breast milk of infected women. The highest risk may be in the early months after birth. It is recommended that new mothers who have HIV infection bottle-feed their babies rather than breast-feed. If you are a woman living with HIV and you intend to become pregnant, or you find out that you are HIV positive during your pregnancy, talk to your doctor immediately about ways to minimize the chances that your baby will become infected, too.

HIV can affect anyone regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, gender or age. However, certain groups are at higher risk for HIV and merit special consideration because of particular risk factors

Is the Risk of HIV Different for Different People? Some groups of people in the United States are more likely to get HIV than others because of many factors, including the status of their sex partners, their risk behaviors, and where they live. Gay and bisexual men have the largest number of new diagnoses in the United States. Blacks/African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos are disproportionately affected by HIV compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Also, trans gender women who have sex with men are among the groups at highest risk for HIV infection, and injection drug users remain at significant risk for getting HIV. Risky behaviors, like having anal or vaginal sex without using a condom or taking medicines to prevent or treat HIV, and sharing needles or syringes play a big role in HIV transmission. Anal sex is the highest-risk sexual behavior. If you don’t have HIV, being a receptive partner (or bottom) for anal sex is the highest-risk sexual activity for getting HIV. If you do have HIV, being the incentive partner (or top) for anal sex is the highest-risk sexual activity for transmitting HIV. But there are more tools available today to prevent HIV than ever before. Choosing less risky sexual behaviors, taking medicines to prevent and treat HIV, and using condoms with lubricants are all highly effective ways to reduce the risk of getting or transmitting HIV. How Can You Tell if You Have HIV? You cannot rely on symptoms to tell whether you have HIV. The only way to know for sure if you have HIV is to get tested. Knowing your status is important because it helps you make healthy decisions to prevent getting or transmitting HIV. The symptoms of HIV vary, depending on the individual and what stage of the disease you are in: the early stage, the clinical latency stage, or AIDS (the late stage of HIV infection). Below are the symptoms that some individuals may experience in these three stages. Not all individuals will experience these symptoms.

Early Stage of HIV About 40% to 90% of people have flu-like symptoms within 2-4 weeks after HIV infection. Other people do not feel sick at all during this stage, which is also known as acute HIV infection. Early infection is defined as HIV infection in the past six months (recent) and includes acute (very recent) infections. Flu-like symptoms can include: Fever, Chills, Rash, Night sweats, Muscle aches, Sore throat Fatigue, Swollen lymph nodes, Mouth ulcers

These symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. During this time, HIV infection may not show up on some types of HIV tests, but people who have it are highly infectious and can spread the infection to others. You should not assume you have HIV just because you have any of these symptoms. Each of these symptoms can be caused by other illnesses. And some people who have HIV do not show any symptoms at all for 10 years or more. However, if you think you may have been exposed to HIV and could be in the early stage of HIV infection, get an HIV test. Most HIV tests detect antibodies (proteins your body makes as a reaction against the presence of HIV), not HIV itself. But it take can take a few weeks or longer for your body to produce these antibodies. Some places use HIV tests that can detect acute and recent infections, but others do not. So be sure to let your testing site know if you think you may have been recently infected with HIV. Tests that can detect acute infection look for HIV RNA or p24 antigen. Most doctors and clinics that provide a full range of health care services can do this test, but some places that only do HIV testing may not have it. So you may want to contact the site before you go to ask if they can test you for acute HIV infection. .
