Trans Superstar at 65

Perhaps this rich, white Republican can explain transgender issues to the deliberately uninformed

The world was stunned—stunned— when Vanity Fair posted its stylistic Annie Leibowitz cover photo of Caitlyn Jenner, the woman living within 1976 Olympic star Bruce Jenner for 65 years. Additional shots inside her $3.5 million Malibu hideaway revealed her as glamorous, sexy and good at striking a pose—a 2015 version of a 1940s movie queen.

TMZ stalked Jenner, capturing her trips to get facial feminization surgery.

And there were hints of Jenner’s transition on the various Kardashian shows. The world was curious—what was happening to the man who once graced the Wheaties box as a gold medal athlete? About 17 million people tuned in to watch sports and reality TV star Bruce Jenner’s final interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer— “Call me Caitlyn,” the headline read, more than the number of people who as if she needed no last name, like watched the final episode of Late Cher or Madonna.

“Bruce always had to tell a lie. Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets. As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I’m free,” Jenner says in a video accompanying the magazine’s June 1 cover story.

Jenner then joined Twitter. “I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me.” She broke President Obama’s record, reaching 1 million Twitter followers in four hours. As of June 8, Caitlyn Jenner has 2.49 million followers with just seven tweets. And that’s how you know she’s a fresh, new social media superstar. And at age 65! But it’s been a very long, painful, quietly arduous journey to authenticity.

During that April 24 interview, Jenner asked Sawyer if it was OK to unleash his ponytail. As he pulled the tie off, there was a change in his demeanor.

He shook free his long hair and he became her, starting the official ‘coming out to the public’ process.

“Yes, for all intents and purposes, I am a woman. People look at me differently,” Jenner told Sawyer. “They see you as this ‘macho male.’ But my heart and soul and everything I do in life—it is part of me. That female side is part of me. It’s who I am.”

Among the most startling of moments was Jenner’s account of how stepdaughter Kim Kardashian West learned to accept Caitlyn— through her husband, rap star Kanye West.

Jenner recalls that West said, “I can be married to the most beautiful woman in the world —and I am. I can have

the most beautiful little daughter in the world—and I have that. But I’m nothing if I can’t be me. If I can’t be true to myself, they don’t mean anything.” Since then, Jenner said, “Kimberly has been, by far, the most accepting.”

Perhaps Snoop Dogg, who called Caitlyn “a science project” on Instagram, could take decency lessons from West. But he’s not alone in being obnoxious. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Jennifer Graham wrote that people like Jenner “would have headlined the tragic freak shows in carnivals of old.” And at Spike TV’s Guys’ Choice Awards on June 6, director Clint Eastwood compared Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to other famous athletes, such as “Jim Brown and Caitlyn Somebody.” Spike TV is editing out the “joke” before the show airs on June 18.

In fact, most people have been positive about Jenner’s transition, calling her “courageous” and “brave.”

But several trans activists and allies have expressed caution, too.

“Yes, Caitlyn looks amazing and is beautiful, but what I think is most beautiful about her is her heart and soul, the ways she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities,” said Orange is the New Black trans superstar Laverne Cox on her Tumblr page, also noting that not all trans individuals have the same kind of money and privilege as she and Caitlyn have. Cox’s co-star Selenis Leyva wrote for Huffington Post Gay Voices about the troubles experienced by her “beautiful and kind young transgender” Latina sister. “My sister is not famous, in fact she is having a hard time finding employment to this date,” Leyva wrote. “She is still struggling to be accepted, and she is still in danger every time she leaves her home.”

But some unexpected allies have emerged, too. On June 7, Republican presidential candidate Lindsey Graham responded to conservative radio host Steve Deace saying Jenner—a Republican worth more than $100 million with a new CAA agent—has a “mental disorder.”

“If Caitlyn Jenner wants to be safe and have a prosperous economy, vote for me,” Graham told CNN. “I haven’t walked in her shoes. I don’t have all the answers to the mysteries of life.

I can only imagine the torment that Bruce Jenner went through. I hope he’s—I hope she has found peace. I’m a pro-life, traditional-marriage kind of guy. But I’m running to be president of the United States. If Caitlyn Jenner wants to be a Republican, she is welcome in my party.”

Trans Latina activist Bamby Salcedo, a leader in the #TransLivesMatter movement, underscores that point— there have been 15 murders of trans women nationally since the beginning of 2015.

“Trans rights don’t exist in a vacuum. We fight as part of the LGBT community, but, just as importantly, with the women’s community,” Beyer tells Frontiers.

“Caitlyn Jenner, by choosing to debut to the world as a ‘30s starlet—in line with the 1952 presentation of the world’s first trans media darling, Christine Jorgensen— contributes to the sexual objectification of women that was common in the decades before the ‘60s civil rights movements, and which unfortunately, has only improved slightly since,” says Beyer. “While the visual of Jenner in a feminine sexual pose helps millions see her as the woman she’s always been, as she’s seen herself, it not only minimizes the understanding of the broad manner of expression of many trans women today, it thrusts a wedge between the women—trans and cis (someone who identifies with the sex they were born with)—who are fighting for a broader equality.”

Fighting for broader equality includes stopping the growing storm of anti-trans “bathroom bills” that conservatives are trying to put on the 2016 ballot, including in California. But perhaps others will now understand “Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out is only the desperate need for the freedom giving her more money and privilege,” that comes with authenticity.

Happy PRIDE everyone! I needed to look up “what is a Superstar?” According to the Merriam-Webster, a superstar is “a star who is considered extremely talented, has great public appeal, one that is very prominent”. The Urban Dictionary’s top definition is “one who is unique and beautiful both inside and out; a bright-shining and/or lovely thing to behold”. There I found my answer and the best way to describe these deserving individuals from our amazing community.

As we celebrate LOVE, DIVERSITY and PRIDE, we would like to honor some of our outstanding community PRIDE Superstars. I hope you enjoy reading about these incredible individuals who make a difference in our lives through the organizations they represent and their dedication and commitment to our community.

Congratulations to our 2015 PRIDE Superstar honorees.

Arlene is currently the Development Manager for the Center. She has lived in Las Vegas since 1992 and has been involved with the LGBT community since 1984.

She has especially been involved with many HIV/AIDS projects throughout her career. Before joining the Center she worked with the community in Los Angeles, and here in Las Vegas has worked with Golden Rainbow and Saint Therese Center. Arlene has been on the staff at the Center since 2008 and preforms a pivotal position there.

She is always willing to “help” anyone in the community with almost anything at a moment’s notice.

Chris is an amazing professional balloon artist and children’s entertainer who has been “Coloring Our World with PRIDE” here in Las Vegas for many, many years!

Every year he dazzles our city and LGBT community with his colorful designs for the annual Black & White Party, as well as during the PRIDE Parade by working with a number of companies who march in the Parade year after year. He also brings joy to the Festival by creating funfilled balloons for the kids (and adults) in the children’s area!

He further supports our community by working with local LGBT nightclubs for numerous events throughout the year. When he’s not working, Chris volunteers his time to LGBT members in our community and helps them to further color their own lives with pride by helping to educate and counsel them in their struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. Not to mention, as his business card says, he’s also an “all around nice guy.”

For the past three years Tim has chaired MGM’s first LGBT Employee Networking Group providing a group of employees and ally’s focused on allowing the talents of LGBT employees to come together to take on local initiatives and drive more business to the company.

The group has been highly successful because of his Leadership. Tim is a leader and champion in the Las Vegas LGBT community.

Cristina DiGioia is a straight ally, who has and continues to work tirelessly for our community. She is a Las Vegas HRC Steering Committee Member; she sits on the Board of Community Counseling Center, and consistently works to assist Golden Rainbow, AFAN, and Las Vegas PRIDE. Cristina is a strong advocate for LGBTQ rights, and has proven her support over the years and has become a very visible ally to the entire Las Vegas Community.

Her work with HRC continues to evolve the volunteer program, with HRC volunteers in support of Las Vegas PRIDE, AFAN, Golden Rainbow, Community Counseling Center, The LGBTQ Center, St. Jude and the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, to name a few.

Tim Evans is the Director of Marketing at the Luxor and has been a champion for the LGBT community by focusing his marketing efforts on this community. He was the mastermind behind the Temptation Sundays Pool Parties, which is in its 6th season. This event has grown stronger every summer bringing more and more LGBT travelers to Vegas and offering a great Sunday afternoon activity that gathers locals together.

Jim McMichael is the Diversity Sales Liaison of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor’s Authority. Replacing Mya Reyes as the face of LGBTQ and Diversity Lifestyles for the LVCVA was no small task. Jim in his two plus years at the LVCVA as greatly surpassed all our expectations and taken our message to host more LGBTQ and Diversity Lifestyle events to new heights and new places.

He developed a quick rapport with those of us in the hospitality industry to present a united welcoming front to all potential convention and meeting planners.

Jim also surprised many of us with his diverse background, education and ability to connect with all types of potential clientele and his clever style of advertising.

He has made great strides by speaking fluent Spanish in helping to deliver our message to the growing Hispanic demographic as well - both gay and straight. Jim has a fun cheery disposition and with his quick wit, knowledge and a sincere professionalism is most deserving of this honor and award. No One works harder from start to finish than Jim McMichael.

Jim has made invaluable connections for all of us in the Las Vegas area LGBTQ Business Community nationally and internationally. I can think of no other candidate that brings more to the table for our community than Jim McMichael.

Tim has also dedicated much of his time traveling to trade shows and events representing the face of LGBT Vegas and welcoming visitors. He constantly presents his ideas of how to make MGM Resorts a driving force in the LGBT community. Making sure MGM is involved and sponsoring local events such as Pride and HRC. Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 15

the organization through its toughest times but also created a Pride Organization that put on the biggest and most profitable events in the LGBT community. Raising money that went directly back into our local community organizations strengthening our community as a whole.

No matter the challenge, Bob stepped up and made sure our communities Pride always shinned. Bob dedication and continued support of the organization is appreciated and admired. Bob is a true LGBT champion.

Josh is the HIV Prevention Director / Vegas Mpowerment Coordinator at the Center. Josh is a native Californian where he received his education as a counselor. Josh became part of the Las Vegas community in 2003 and began working at the Center a few months after arriving in the city. Josh is responsible for running the youth group and coordinating Mpowerment. He is always available to lend an ear if one of our youth needs someone to talk with or ask for advice/counseling. Josh continued his education at UNLV working on his degree in Social Work. Josh is a pivotal individual in the community with outreach to many areas promoting HIV prevention in all aspects.

Robert Napierala, his friends call him Bob, deserves this honor because of his dedicated service to the Las Vegas LGBT community. Bob has served on the SNAPI Board for over a decade in various roles. Bob stepped in 12 years ago when the organization was in sever financial hardship. He joined the board with a focus of paying off all the organizations debt, which was around $50,000, ensuring the Las Vegas community had a Pride celebration that year. With Bon’s leadership, the community celebrated Pride.

Bobby Townsend has been in Las Vegas for 18 years and is an owner of a very successful Concierge business. Bobby employees people with illnesses that other companies will not give the time or day. This opportunity gives the people hope and lets them feel as if they fit in with everyone else. Bobby cares a lot about the Las Vegas visitors and the Las Vegas LGBT Community. Bobby tries very hard to put smiles on people’s faces and to make dreams come true when they come to visit our amazing city of Las Vegas. For the Las Vegas LGBT community Bobby gives back thousands of dollars a year to our LGBT 501c3 non-profit organizations to help them raise money for charitable events that help others within our community.

Bobby is a big supporter of HIV/AIDS causes because Bobby is living with AIDS and knows what it is like dealing with AIDS on a day-to-day basic. Bobby has a strong desire to work with younger people or people that were diagnosed as having HIV to let them know it’s going to be a long road but “you have help and you will be ok”. Bobby has been involved with Smokeout Las Vegas for the past 8 years as the event planner. Smokeout brings thousands of men from around the world to Las Vegas, while here they have so much fun and it is one of Bobby’s favorite events… he loves it!!! Bobby’s heart is with helping others and doing everything he can to show people “you can have a great life you just have to want to put a little work in to it to enjoy it more.”

Joe Oddo is a Supervisor for the National Support Center for Cox Business and is the champion of LGBT activities for Cox Las Vegas. Since the inception of Cox’s partnership with SNAPI – Joe has been the advocate to promote diversity and inclusion, concentrating on LGBT outreach with employees. Being the “super” behind the man, Joe has concentrated his efforts on growing employee participation with the PRIDE parade – to the amazing number of 450 employees and family members walking in the 2014 PRIDE parade. With his leadership and creativity – Cox’s 2014 PRIDE parade entry won the Rainbow Award! In addition to his great work with employees, Joe has also expanded LGBT Outreach to include national networks such as USA Networks by bringing the “I Won’t Stand For” campaign to Southern NV two years in a row. Joe is a driving force for Cox’s LGBT activities both in Las Vegas and the Southwest Region including Phoenix, Tucson and now San Diego markets.

For the past four years Joe has been a chair on the Cox Southwest Regional Diversity Council and is an integral part of the Cox National LGBT Employee Resource Group that will be launched by the end of 2015. Joe is a true leader in every sense of the word and has taken LGBT outreach to a whole new level!

Hello! Welcome to Las Vegas PRIDE 2015. This year we celebrate the 32nd anniversary of Las Vegas PRIDE with the theme “Color Our World with PRIDE.” The Board of Directors has worked very hard to produce 10 days of fabulous events and activities for the community to enjoy. I could not be more proud of what has been accomplished.

Las Vegas PRIDE is getting bigger and better every year. Year after year, our amazing sponsors return, and new sponsors arrive. Also exciting, SNAPI has launched our very own Non-Profit Magazine with great success. Focused on the many LGBT Non-Profits in Las Vegas, the magazine has been welcomed by the community. After a successful first year, we will be continuing this program in the coming year.

Bucking Tradition

Not a Dom, Not a Sub misperceptions; I won’t use that information to harm or manipulate anyone, at least not intentionally).

All information is valuable, but perception isn’t reality.

It’s not uncommon for those I meet in the Leather/Kink scene to be confused with how I present myself, since I tend to buck nearly every tradition I come into contact with. And somehow it shows. What I notice is a moment of confusion, followed by an attempt to gauge me through conversation.

This leads to the discovery that what they originally perceived may not be correct.

And that’s just where I like them.

Because I’m tall (6’3”), malepresenting and pushing 200 pounds, it’s not unusual for some to call me intimidating, gruff, arrogant and domineering. But the moment I open my mouth and they hear a soft-spoken intellectual speaking in a lyric baritone voice, I watch these people’s guardedness melt away and a connection is established.

What I typically will volunteer as a shorthand reply to those who express their confusion at being unable to tell whether I’m a submissive or a Dominant is that I’m a switch, but even that contains some nuance. It’s in those moments I communicate that I am neither a Dominant nor a submissive but a Cooperative. I don’t believe I’m coining a new term, only utilizing sophistications of language to convey a subtle point: That your assumptions about me (or anything for that matter) are likely incomplete, occasionally inaccurate or simply wrong. FLAGS, COLORS & SYMBOLS EXPLAINED Pride festivals/parades are famous the world over for their exuberant and unique message-driven themes. A colorful, fabulous celebration, parades are often distinguished by lively participants with brandish colorful flags and symbols.

But what does each color of the pride flag represent? What does that pink triangle stand for? Ever wonder what the meaning of each color is? ANNUAL PRIDE NIGHT PARADE

GREG CHASE Greg Chase is excited to bring his charismatic personality to the stage for his 2nd year hosting the Las Vegas Pride Parade. No stranger to the Las Vegas hospitality community, Greg has emceed and hosted multiple public & private events throughout the Las Vegas Area, including Las Vegas Pride’s National Coming Out Day celebration where he married 8 LGBT couples on the heels of the legalization of Marriage Equality in Nevada. Greg is active in the Las Vegas & LGBT community, serving on the Board of Advisors for the Southern Nevada Hotel Concierge Association as well as supporting multiple philanthropic efforts such as the St. Baldrick’s Foundation as well as through his involvement with the MGM Resorts International LGBT Employee Networking Group.

Greg moved to Las Vegas 5 years ago from Orlando, Florida where he worked with the Walt Disney World Resort. He looks forward making time to support the Las Vegas LGBT Community any chance he gets.

ANDREW RYAN Andrew Ryan was born and raised in Parker, Arizona. Ryan’s love of the stage began in 3rd grade performing in school plays and participating in the drama program through high school. He was a member of the school band playing clarinet and saxophone. He also participated in Yearbook, FFA Club, 4-H, Swim Team, and 4 years with the Arizona Western College Dance Team. Ryan’s higher education includes an Associate Degree in design, general studies at Yavapai College, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Arizona State University in Design Management. In 2008, Andrew relocated to Las Vegas and honed his craft as

a Female Celebrity Impersonator. Performing in night club and casino showrooms, Ryan is best known for his showgirl illusions and elaborate costumes. He can be seen nightly at Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas at the Linq Showroom! Follow him on Instagram @andrewryandiva

Las Vegas PRIDE is honored to have Randy Arnold as our 2015 Parade Grand Marshal. Barefoot Wine and Bubbly has been a wonderful supporter of Las Vegas PRIDE for over 15 years.

Barefoot Ambassador Randy Arnold was born in Sonoma County, California. Randy grew up in the idyllic surroundings of his family’s orchards and vineyards in the Sebastopol area. His wine grape growing experience began at the “ground level” helping plant grapevines in his family’s vineyards. Following a degree in Wine Marketing, Randy learned first-hand about the wine industry by working for numerous vineyards, wineries and distributors throughout Northern California.

As Barefoot ambassador, Randy travels across the country sharing with the public his passion for making wine fun as well as training the next generation of Barefoot representatives in the unique Barefoot culture.

Remembering the mantra to “make the world a better place through wine,” Randy encourages all new Barefoot

representatives to choose non-profits and causes that are close to their own heart just as he has done since 1990.

When not working, Randy likes nothing better than spending time with his husband, Greg, at the Wildwood Retreat Center. Randy and Greg were married during the “window of opportunity” in 2008, they make their home in Oakland. Their wedding reception was a benefit for the Wildwood Foundation. Located on a mountaintop in Western Sonoma County, the Wildwood Retreat Center is Randy’s favorite place in the world. This amazing retreat center specializes in yoga, massage and healing. Randy started a memorial grove to help people process their grief at the loss of a loved one and to create remembrance.

In the grove among several hundred redwoods lie the memorial stones for loved ones. Randy loves to sit on a bench in the grove watching the redwoods grow. A Coast Redwood can live to be 2,000 years old, which is what Randy calls long-term planning!

Randy feels very fortunate to be a part of a very successful winery that does so much good in the world. He looks forward to introducing you to new Barefoot wines and bubblies, and though Randy has no formal training in the kitchen he hopes to continue doing his chef demos across the country. As Randy likes to say, “just because you’re not an expert doesn’t mean you can’t have fun too!”

Every year the Las Vegas PRIDE Festival brings in an eclectic mix of talent to entertain the masses, and 2015 will be no exception. What’s interesting about this year’s lineup is how familiar they will be. We’ve got a former Pussycat Doll, a former American Idol favorite, a former Little Rascal, and hosting it all is a decorated military veteran turned jaw-dropping hot model! On with the show!

A native of Miami, FL, Jessica fell in love with music and dance at an early age, studying ballet and becoming a cheerleader for the Miami Heat before even graduating high school. In 2003 she joined The Pussycat Dolls, one of the best selling girl groups of all time, having garnered with the group a Grammy nomination, winning two Billboard Going with a “ladies first” style, the Music Awards, two MTV Video Music first of our three headliners for this Awards and playing for sold out year’s PRIDE is Jessica Sutta, a former audiences around the world.

Our next headliner comes to us courtesy of American Idol. David Hernandez made it all the way to the Top 12 as a finalist of the seventh season of American Idol before exiting the competition (I still demand a recount!). Born in Phoenix, AZ, to his single mother, Spring Hernandez, he began acting and singing at the age of 6 after his grandfather took him to his first audition for a local theatre company. This led to him singing on cruise ships, performing during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade and even competing in Arizona Idol to secure an audition for American Idol.

He lost, though obviously that didn‘t keep him from traveling to San Diego to audition on his own.

Since American Idol, David hasn’t stopped, performing on everything from The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Today Show to the Inaugural Kick-Off Celebration ball for President Obama. He just released the single, “WTF,” in July, which he co-wrote and which was produced by Printz Board of The Black Eyed Peas.

It was there that he was approached by a photographer about becoming a model. He’d never considered it before, and thought the photographer was crazy for suggesting it, but Alex relented. His pictures went viral, and suddenly this handsome guy with a gorgeous body covered in tattoos would become an inspiration. His prosthetic leg would never be the focus of his pictures, but would add to the beauty of the subject being photographed.

David Hernandez | Pop Singer and American Idol Finalist

Our final headliner, Blake McIver, started his successful career performing having won the title of Star Search’s Junior Vocalist Champion at the age of 6. He went on to play Derek Boyd, Michelle’s frenemy on Full House for 3 seasons (any chance we’ll see him in Fuller House?). One of his most recognizable roles, though, was playing Waldo Aloysius Johnston III in the 1994 film, The Little Rascals.

But like any other child star, Blake had to grow up, and he’s done quite nicely at that too. Just look at his Instagram! He is a graduate of the UCLA school of Theatre, Film and Television. He released his first solo album, The Time Manipulator, in 2014. His newest single, “This Is Who We Are,” a song whose lyrics could easily serve as a theme for the recent marriage equality victory in the US, was just recently released as well.

Serving as host for the 2015 Las Vegas PRIDE Festival will be Alex Minsky, a retired Marine corporal turned model. Just weeks into his first tour in Afghanistan in 2009 Alex’s Humvee encountered a roadside bomb that left him critically injured with traumatic brain injuries and the loss of his right leg below the knee. He

was not expected to survive, but he miraculously pulled through after a 47 day coma and 17 months in the hospital.

Even though he walked again for the first time at his Purple Heart ceremony, post traumatic stress unfortunately took over Alex’s life.

The death of his brother from a heroin overdose sent him into a 23 month depression where he was drunk constantly and got multiple DUIs. He fought back again, beating the alcohol by working out twice a day, six days a week at the gym.

Dalton Wilson (aka DW) and Bryce Krausman have been best friends for 16+ years and proprietors of DW Bistro, now in it’s 5th year in Southwest Las Vegas. This pair has been serving up brunch even before DW Bistro came to life. PRIDE COMES ALIVE! (and then some!)

don’t think any of us quite expected it. June 26, 7 a.m. here on the West Coast and 10 a.m. on the East Coast.

We had been holding our breath for weeks, even months, when we heard that Obergefell vs. Hodges would be heard by The Supreme Court—raising the judicial question whether marriage equality should be recognized throughout the land. Then, at that moment, the Supreme Court of the United States announced its sweeping decision in favor of marriage equality across all 50 states of the union. Our community had been jolted. Life has not been the same!

As many people as I talked to, they described the occurrence as somewhat surreal. Over and over again, pursed on the lips of many peers was, “I never thought I would ever see this day come.” Then suddenly, in an almost incredulous fashion, the decision was handed down. Could there have been a better moment? After decades of struggle, PRIDE came alive in an entirely new way. We as LGBTQ have achieved a new level of societal recognition. We shall not be the same.

The rest of the day seemed like a carnival at The Center. Staff were embracing one another. Everything imaginable with rainbow colors was pulled out of

closets. The media whirred with one interview after the next. The sheer joy at The Center was heartfelt. There were tears and laughter, hugs and high-fives, then more tears and laughter. It was hard to identify the moment.

And social media lit up like a rainbow Christmas tree. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many other platforms carried one expression of joy and disbelief after another. There were somber moments, reflective moments, patriotic moments, as well as unwavering commitment to move it all forward. Folks related that they felt “recognized.” They felt “American” for once. One message of joy and hope after the next was spread. This uncanny world of social media will never be the same again.

And then, they turned out in the evening—in extraordinary numbers.

All came to celebrate. Many came to witness history. They were all present: LGBTQ young and old, in a variety of races and ethnic groups. The sons and daughters of LGBTQ were present. So were allies. It was a family to behold in all its diversity and richness. Many came to remember the past. Others came to savor this moment in history. Still others, so PROUD of what happened to them

earlier in the day, vowed to expend their efforts to end other forms of discrimination and separation felt by our community. It was a celebration of community.

Miriam Webster’s dictionary defines pride as “…a feeling that you respect yourself and deserve to be respected by other people.” Indeed, in one sweeping judgement, a new respect came to our land. Yes, it won’t quiet the detractors or silence the arguments. It won’t erase bigotry or eliminate all the shadows of discrimination and separation. But it brought us a new light for our nation—a light of inclusion. It brought us new recognition and a new respect for LGBTQ. Upon this platform of victory and hope, we will build even further.

That weekend because of a few health challenges, I was required to lay a little bit low. And throughout the whole weekend, I witnessed the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision in one of the most colorful and energetic gay PRIDE weekends all throughout the United States. PRIDE New York celebrated! PRIDE San Francisco.

PRIDE Chicago and almost every major city across the nation. This was our moment of recognition. Life in these United States will never be the same. It was a PRIDE moment……and then some! q
