Purely Pilates based in Church Road, Hove held an open day on Saturday 14 January to offer newcomers the chance to look around the studio and take part in classes. Gemma Wright, Sarah Webster and Karen Hamer, who have over 30 years experience between them, were on hand to demonstrate the equipment with current clients. The Pilates Method, was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s as an exercise programme for First World War veterans. His original technique has now been enhanced utilising the improved knowledge of the way the body works. It entails a series of stretching and resistance exercises with a focus on breathing and body awareness that leads to core stability and leaner muscles, with the all gain and no pain approach. Superswap under way Superintendent Simon Nelson has a new office – in the Town Hall. Frank le Duc finds out why
F
ootball fans are used to the idea of players on loan. Brighton and Hove Albion signed Steve Harper on loan from Newcastle in the autumn and Gonzalo Jara Reyes from West Bromwich Albion. Now the idea has been taken up in a different field as the public sector tries to improve the service it provides while having to work with less money. And the loan signing is the officer in charge of policing the first football match at Albion’s new Amex Stadium. Acting Superintendent Simon Nelson has joined Brighton and Hove City Council on loan until early next year. Until a few weeks ago the 44-year-old was the chief inspector in charge of operations in Brighton and Hove. He was responsible for – among other things – public order, which included the policing of big events such as football matches and protests. Friday and Saturday night in West Street formed part of his brief, along with licensing, and he was “the police strategic lead for alcohol-related harm reduction – the police representative on the Alcohol Programme Board”. And it was with his drinking hat on, if you’ll forgive the phrase, that he began to work more closely with his new colleagues at the council. At about the same time, chief executive John Barradell was starting to push the idea of intelligent commissioning. In some ways, intelligent commissioning is a new name for an old idea: joint working. The phrase joined up government also comes to mind. After all, health and social workers have been required to co-operate on certain issues for more than 20 years. And organisations in Brighton and Hove have a long track record of “partnership working”. For example, when big events are planned, representatives from the council already meet with police and fire service colleagues.
UNLOCKING VALUE
Mr Barradell said that intelligent commissioning was about making the biggest impact with the resources available. It involved looking at ways of working differently with other organisations, including those in the community and voluntary sector, to “unlock value” for the city and its citizens. The review looked at three pilot projects intended to tackle:
• The impact of alcohol on the city • Drug-related deaths • Domestic violence These were problems, he said, that were inter-related and could not be “fixed” by one organisation alone. At the review meeting, councillors were told about the way intelligent commissioning had started to tackle what some people perceive as Brighton’s drink problem. Tom Scanlon, the director of public health, said that it was being addressed by the Alcohol Programme Board. It was looking at four specific issues: • The culture of alcohol use • The availability of alcohol • The night-time economy • The treatment and prevention of alcohol misuse Continues, p8.

latest brighton & hove news NIGHT-TIME ECONOMY Availability involved the licensing team at the council and their counterparts in the police. The night-time economy, which creates jobs and brings visitors and money to the centre of Brighton, was a matter of concern to the police as they dealt with crime and public order and safety. Some of those enjoying the delights of Brighton’s night-time economy end up in the A&E department of the Royal Sussex County Hospital. They may have had too much to drink or taken drugs or have been in a fight. Dr Scanlon said that the four issues were linked and the Alcohol Programme Board brought strategic oversight to the issue. Its members were focused on problem solving and improving the performance of the public services. The “intelligent” part, he said, was bringing more people together and giving them joint responsibility for a problem affecting us all. This approach had allowed culture change to be raised, for example, through the Big Alcohol Debate. This had been devised to bring about a better understanding of the issues around alcohol and our drinking culture. It would lead to more early identification and explicit treatment work and therefore more positive results. The joint work had helped make clearer the funding available to deal with alcohol problems in the city.
THE BIG ALCOHOL DEBATE
“The Big Alcohol Debate gives us a much better understanding around alcohol use,” Dr Scanlon said. “I was a little bit sceptical [of intelligent commissioning] at the start. I’ve become more of a convert. It’s brought a lot of people together, working in a more cohesive way than in the past.” His comments were echoed by Simon Nelson, who told the same review that when he took over the operations role as chief inspector there was an alcohol strategy but it was fragmented. “What I’m seeing now is intelligent commissioning filtering down to the operational level.” He said that a problem with fake wine and vodka had involved trading standards and police officers working closely together. Customs officers have also been involved. Over the past year the joint working fed into an overhaul of local licensing policy. As a result, the relaxation of the licensing laws was being tempered by the recently extended cumulative impact zone. This made it easier to restrict new licences where drink-related problems had already been identified. Superintendent Nelson said that formerly it had been frustrating that there “I hope staff will feel was no co-ordinated better enabled. I hope to strategy on alcohol. He said: “Everybody had been help people do their jobs doing their own bit in isolation. We wanted a plan better and bring about to bring about real closer collaboration” change.” As well as working more closely with council trading standards officers, the police were also liaising more with A&E staff on alcohol-related harm. The volunteers running Safe Space in St Paul’s Church in West Street, are part of this picture. He said that over the past year 250 fewer people had been assaulted as a result of partnership measures and a comprehensive plan, adding: “Financial efficiency is important. Those 250 fewer victims of assault last year meant there were 125 investigations that we did not have to do, with 250 fewer presentations at A&E as well.”
A STEP FURTHER
Now Superintendent Nelson is taking the partnership working a step further, ditching his uniform and basing himself in council offices as he works more closely with the council’s regulatory and enforcement teams. “There may be perceptions about a police officer going into the local authority, about it being a takeover, which it most certainly will not be,” he said. “There’s going to be learning both ways. In some ways my rank and standing as a police officer is irrelevant. “This is something that’s done with local authority colleagues, not done to them. They will help identify what the opportunities are and formulate solutions and it will be them who will be critical in formulating how things are implemented while ensuring that we protect the good practice that’s already in place.” The father of three said that there had been a big cultural change within the police over just ten years, making it much more community focused. “With the best of intentions, in the past we used to tell people what we thought they needed. We would take control. We would keep people safe. We had the best appreciation of the more nasty things which were going on which people didn’t know about.”
CLOSE COLLABORATION
“There obviously have to be proper processes and structures. But if there’s a quick win, if there’s a glaring opportunity to bring about obvious benefits, we shouldn’t be a slave to any programme. Obviously there’s got to be broad agreement and it would need to be challenged properly. Is the local
Superintendent Simon Nelson
A CLASS SOLUTION The imminent closure of Hove Police Station has prompted the sharing of more than just ideas. The council is eyeing the building in Holland Road as an overspill primary school. At the same time, police officers are likely to be based in council buildings, with Hove Town Hall and premises in Hove Park and Portslade in the frame. The former police commander for Hove, Graham Cox, has just been elected to the council. He won the Westbourne by-election for the Conservatives last month after former council leader Brian Oxley stood down. Mr Cox and one of his party colleagues, Andrew Wealls, have raised the matter with Sussex Police. Councillor Cox said: “As the former Police Superintendent at Hove I do have a sentimental attachment to the Holland Road Police Station and will be very sorry to see it closed. “However, I welcome the assurance that Councillor Wealls and I have received that this will not happen until new bases for neighbourhood officers in Hove Park and Portslade, as well as a shared front office in the Town Hall, are all up and running. I am also pleased that response officers will use these new bases while allocated to emergency calls in Hove.” Councillor Wealls said: “We are also very interested in the future of the Holland Road site. This is probably the most viable location for a much needed new primary school for Hove. We hope the city council negotiates quickly and in good faith with the aim of securing this site for local children.”
community better off? Are the teams in the local authority and the police more efficient? “Most staff share a real determination to make a difference. Very few people just turn up to do a job. They care about the community of Brighton and Hove. I hope staff will feel better enabled. I hope to help people do their jobs better and bring about closer collaboration between the two organisations.”
MAKING IT WORK
“The working partnership between Sussex Police and Brighton and Hove City Council is probably the closest I’ve experienced in 18 years,” Nelson continued. “What more can we do to jointly improve the service that we offer to the community of Brighton and Hove working efficiently and closer together? This is about building on that and working in true collaboration with them. “We used to brief each other and then we consulted. We’ve had partnership working. Now we need collaboration. It’s a pilot and we’ll evaluate it about a year from now. If things work we’ll try to find a sustainable way of keeping them going. If they don’t, we won’t. We’re not slaves to it.” It’s difficult to escape the feeling though that there is a real determination to make it work whether it’s called intelligent commissioning, closer collaboration or joint working. Superintendent Nelson is aiming to make the most of this loan spell no matter what position he’s in. n

e may be in the economic doldrums but a bookings boom has been reported by Brighton & Hove City Council’s conference team. VisitBrighton handled 122 conference inquiries in 2011 – 13 per cent up on the year before - and the 39 bookings so far confirmed will bring in an estimated £58m to the local economy. The 28 major conferences or events booked for 2012 are expected to attract over 30,000 delegates and earn the city £45m. Most will be at the Brighton Centre, with others at the Dome, Brighton Hilton Metropole, The Grand, Thistle and the Holiday Inn. The biggest will be the Liberal Democrats’ Party Conference, in late September, which will attract 8,000 people and bring in £15m. The city clearly still enjoys major pulling power – and even our visitor’s centre is winning praise: A survey showed 97 per cent of callers were happy with the service. The true cost of alcohol abuse in the city has been revealed: £106m (£10m on health alone) with 40 per cent of crimes and two deaths every week being drink related. Results from a Big Alcohol Debate Survey showed some people avoid parts of the city because of the way drunk people behave. Dr Tom Scanlon, Brighton and Hove’s Director of Public Health and chair of the city’s Alcohol Programme Board, said: “We’re taking these results seriously and will be discussing with our partners how we can do things differently. There is a message coming through that people would welcome an

But the horror of the camps was really brought home to me when I interviewed a gypsy woman in 1977 in Paris, who rolled up her sleeve to reveal her concentration camp number, tattooed indelibly into her arm. Despite our best attempts, it appears to be the same murderous part of the human condition that we have since seen repeated in

What I could not understand was the final page, which offered translations of this pamphlet in Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Farsi, French, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish and any other language ‘(please state)’. A prep school has introduced “wrap around care” to help busy parents at the start and end of the day. St Aubyns School, in Rottingdean, said that the move included a number of services in addition to the full school day. These were designed to suit pupil’s educational needs as well as help those parents who work longer hours. They include a morning café for parents who wish to stay in school for a chat after dropping off their children. There is also a take-home supper service for parents who want a home-made meal at the end of a busy day. Both services will be offered up by Brendan Moran, the school chef. The evening menu of suppers can be pre-ordered and collected from the kitchen either in the morning or after school. Shadow Education Secretary Stephen Twigg’s call for longer school days last week was echoed by Michael Gove, the Education Secretary. Mr Twigg said that an “extended day would help keep children from joining gangs and also give some pupils a haven from chaotic homes so that they can work in a more settled environment”.
n DRIVE TO HELP TROUBLED FAMILIES TO BE FUNDED BY £300K GRANT
The government is giving the council more than £300,000 as part of a drive to help troubled families. David Cameron announced the initiative before Christmas. And at Hove Town Hall earlier this month council leader Bill Randall set out the figures for the coming three years. The money will be spent trying to help about 600 families. Mr Cameron said that troubled families cost the state a disproportionate amount as a result of crime, welfare payments and health problems. Troubled families are likely to have no parent in work or with qualifications, poor quality housing and a low income. In many cases the mother has a longstanding disability or illness, sometimes a mental illness or drug problem.

Almost 2,000 students graduated from Sussex University last week at three graduation ceremonies over two days at the Dome. And more than 2,000 friends and family came along to help them celebrate their achievements. The university’s chancellor Sanjeev Bhaskar joined the new graduates who came from all over Britain as well as China, Taiwan, Japan, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, America and New Zealand. South African human rights campaigner was awarded an honorary degree for his work with the National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality in South Africa. And Sussex alumnus John Altman, who went on to become an award-winning composer, musician and conductor, was made a Doctor of Music. He has worked with the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Sting and composed period music for the film Titanic. Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Farthing announced how Sussex was celebrating its 50th anniversary internationally. Events have been planned with Sussex alumni and prospective students across the globe, including the university’s first honorary degree ceremonies in India. The university has a growing number of students from the sub-continent.

When strains are showing Hard cases highlight concerns as health chiefs juggle demand for services with tight budgets
T
he Economist magazine is not noted for its wishy-washy bleeding heart liberal point of view. And yet it said that care in the community was the humorous name for the government’s policy of neglecting the mentally ill. But community care is crucial if the NHS is to make anything like the level of financial savings being demanded by the government. Community care is much more widely accepted than it was a generation ago. A growing body of evidence supports claims that mentally ill people tend to fare better if they are cared for at home. Besides, the previous policy of locking people up in lunatic asylums had fallen into disrepute. Institutional care was hidden away, often in Victorian buildings, where some people were kept inappropriately. It was deemed “When anybody safer for the patients and public. And all the needs a bed, medical care took place under one roof, making it cost effective. Some are concerned we will always that the pendulum has swung from one extreme to another. Brighton and Hove provide one” currently has 95 NHS mental health beds – and some private ones – but most patients are treated in the community. The city is likely to have 19 fewer beds though after a proposal from the trust that provides mental health, substance misuse and learning disability services for the area. Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust says that it can maintain or improve the service that it offers by reducing the number of beds in Hove. Members of Brighton and Hove City Council asked for more information before accepting the case for closures. And one councillor, Dawn Barnett, questioned whether the trust had enough community psychiatric nurses to cope with demand.
LATEST INBOX The city parking debate As a resident of nearby Havelock Road I can only look forward to the parking situation here becoming even more horrendous then it is currently. Living at the bottom of the road we already have the curse of the commuter eating up our precious parking spaces during the day. Making Preston Park Avenue residents/parking bays was ridiculous as most of the houses and flats on the west side already have their own parking. Drive up there at any time of the day or night and you will witness the
tumbleweed blowing around the tens of unused spaces, hence the present situation with commuters parking in Preston Park all day. I and neighbours are almost at the point of begging the Council to make our road residents parking only and God knows I am the last person to want to pay more of my precious income to them! I can't believe that the Council didn’t envisage the fact that people would end up in the park and that noone would use the spaces in Preston Park Avenue! More consultation with local residents would have proved key. As it is, I don’t leave my house by car after 6pm as, if I do, I end up having to park four streets away... it’s enough to make a gal want to leave the town of her birth! Joy Flowers, via email
Last week she raised the case of a distressed man in her Hangleton and Knoll ward. She said that he clearly needed in-patient treatment but she had difficulty persuading the trust to admit him. Eventually it agreed on condition that she accompany him to the nearest bed – in Eastbourne. Richard Ford, executive director of strategic development at Sussex Partnership, said: “We’re well aware of the incident. January is always a very busy time of year for our services. This is always our most difficult time.” The patient has since been moved closer to home and is still being treated. Councillor Barnett said that he needed a greater level of help and support than he had been given as he was living in squalor. She said: “The National Health has let him down. The carer should have reported back to the office.” She believes that carers are often not allowed to spend enough time on each visit. She said: “If the RSPCA had been inside his home and there was a dog or a cat in there they would have taken it out. It’s as though he’s been missed and fallen through the system.” Help on the home front has been promised, she added. Meanwhile, Sam Allen, a service director at the trust, said: “When anybody needs a bed, we will always provide one for them – preferably an NHS bed. We can use private sector capacity if we have to.” Private beds were used rarely, councillors were told, because of factors such as cost and continuity of care. She said that no beds would be withdrawn without the approval of a clinical review group chaired by Dr Becky Jarvis, a GP from St Peter’s Medical Centre in Brighton. The group is due to meet for the first time this week. Two academics, Judith Rumgay and Eileen Munro, investigated dozens of reports of “poor quality care by professionals”. They cited “a seeming disregard of personal distress and an unwillingness to permit access to support services” in the Journal of Forensic Psychiatry. They suggested that “apparently insensitive behaviour” stemmed from “the deployment of rationalisations for denying care to mentally ill individuals”. They said that this happened when “professionals experience powerlessness to intervene effectively”. It is to be hoped that reducing the number of beds in Hove will not leave carers feeling powerless by this time next year.

L7 INTERVIEW 13
Dream voice
And you had to act, is that another step for you? “Yes, I was really nervous because I am not an actress and I haven’t done that training, but I think now I have pushed myself and been pushed by the amazing Dr Who team, I would definitely consider it again, I’d have to sing though.”
Katherine Jenkins has achieved world fame as a classical cross-over singer. Andrew Kay talked to her as she embarked on another major concert tour
Do you think you are part of a great new Welsh Arts mafia? [Laughs] “It’s funny how much is coming out of Wales now and I have always been very proud of being Welsh. It is a country that loves singing and arts, I think that is fantastic.”
This cold weather doesn’t affect you voice does it? Do you have to be particularly careful? “Well I am careful all the time, doing what I can, eating the right things, drinking lots of water, no alcohol, all that kind of stuff. I do drink, of course, but I don’t get the opportunity to very much. I do all I can to stay fit at all times so that I never have to cancel any concerts.”
It would be lovely to see someone playing Carmen when they are still young and sexy... “Ah, yes, well, that would be fun. I hope I get the chance to do it.”
You toured with Darcy Bussell in Diva and you are a better dancer than she will ever be a singer. Are there any other big names that you would like to duet with? “Thank you. Classically I have been very lucky to have sung with a lot of people that I really admire. Perhaps someone completely different, like Michael Buble, just to see what happens?”
That must be very disappointing when you do. Do you find it upsetting? “It’s only happened twice in eight years, but if there’s anything wrong with my voice I am not a good person to be around.”
Having listened to your most recent album I really enjoyed the inclusion of some folk songs on there. Are you very interested in those songs? “I’m interested in them because of my Welsh background, and I love ‘Black Is The Colour’ which I think is Scottish, I love that kind of Celtic song. I am a mix of music and my albums and concerts reflect that. I learned to sing in church so there is always church music too. I started to get interested in serious music when I was in my early teens and prior to that it was all about musical theatre. I loved all that and include those songs as well as some contemporary songs.”
You are about to start another major tour... “Yes, I’m really looking forward to it, for me it’s the best bit of what I do, the live part, on a stage with an orchestra seeing how the music affects the audience. I love it.” As a young person was your dream to be a classical performer or did you think that you would be more of a cross-over artist? “I didn’t know about cross-over then, I didn’t know it really existed. So I was really intent in my training hoping that I could get myself into a small opera chorus and work my way up from there. So I suppose a classical career. Then when I got the record contract that seemed like something really different. I mean I hadn’t even thought about a record contract or about being a recording artist. With the albums I always try to include a wide range of songs and reach the widest possible audience, which has meant that I have included a lot of classical repertoire and there are other performers like me who have done the same thing.” Do you think that you will ever return to a classical career, I mean would you like to? “No, not a straight classical career, I don’t think I could ever go back to that entirely. I love what crossover allows me to do and I can still perform straight classical music. I’ve just been in Australia singing with Plácido Domingo, doing opera arias and duets and a few show tunes too. I count that as straight classical. But then I can come back and be involved in concerts and recording with pop singers. I wouldn’t change that, I’ve definitely found my niche.” But is that the opera world’s loss? “Ah, I’d still like the opportunity to do opera. I don’t want to give that up, or what I’m doing now either.” Which of the great Mezzo Soprano roles would you really love to do? “Carmen! She’s such a dangerous minx and a really big character.”
Is there any chance it will happen? “Yes, I’m talking to people about it at the moment. I think not this year but maybe next year.”
“When I am out on the
street kids don’t know me as a singer but they do say ‘there’s that girl off Dr Who’. It makes me laugh” It does give you a very wide audience, I have sat and watched you surrounded by teenagers and senior citizens... “Yes, it’s insane, isn’t it? It started off as definitely an older audience but now I get everything. I do a question and answer section in my show and I get young mothers with their nine month old daughters and requests for 90 year old’s birthdays. It’s crazy and I love that.” Do you think your appearance in Dr Who has increased that audience? “Definitely, It’s quite funny because when I am out on the street kids don’t know me as a singer but they do say there’s that girl off Dr Who. It makes me laugh.”
You’re not frightened of anything, are you? “No, well some things, but when it comes to performing I think it’s really good to just try your best and to push the boundaries of your comfort zone. The things I am really happy with are the things that were really uncomfortable to begin with. You have to constantly push yourself.” You say you love musical theatre, will we ever see you in a West End show? “I think so, I have been asked by Andrew Lloyd Webber and it would be great to do at some point.” What would be your dream musical? “I don’t know because I don’t know where my voice will be at, but I love all of Andrew’s work.” You are also well known for your support of the armed forces, will there be more of that? “Yes, I am planning to go back to Afghanistan this year, but we will not make an announcement in case we have to cancel.” And they do try to bomb you, don’t they? “Yes, I have all sorts thrown at me on those trips. I want to go but it’s not been safe for a while but I will go back.” Katherine Jenkins appears in concert at The Brighton Centre, Friday 10 February, Box office: 0844 847 1515 www.brightoncentre.co.uk

latest SEAGULLS Up the Albion! Mark Brailsford commends the team spirit
W
ith transfer speculation hotting up again and players returning from injury, competition for places is getting more intense. This can only be a good thing from the coaching staff’s point of view, if a little uncomfortable for some of the players who have been in and out of the side of late. Take for example Ashley Barnes (and some fans have been crying out for someone to please, take Ashley Barnes!) but this tough young player has come through a trying time and kept his head, he then scored the all important equaliser in the replay against Wrexham that eventually led to the shoot out victory. Barnes has his critics and he does sometimes make some basic errors but he has shown great resilience and played well in the excellent victory against Peterborough. Well done to him. The reason for pointing this out is to highlight the reasons for the Albion’s rather good season so far. With a team ravaged by injury and suspension, Gus Poyet has resisted blaming these factors for slip-ups in the league and his approach is paying “He has shown off. There have been occasions where discipline has been an issue great resilience and but these matters appear to be settling down in a way that does played well in the credit to Gus’ man management. Other managers may be tempted to excellent victory” lash out at the Fates and develop a persecution complex. Gus looked like he might be heading this way at some point, but his character as a manager is quick to adapt and learns fast, he has grown in the role and the team seems to be maturing with him. You only have to look at the way a team plays to see if the players respect their manager and Gus seems to have this quality in abundance. This is in contrast to The Emirates Stadium where Van Persie signalled his dissent to the dug out when Wenger made a substitution that displeased him. That kind of problem is symptomatic of fragile morale and a team of discontented players. Luckily for Albion fans, the Seagulls have a manager who learns fast and is a master at handling footballers. Two points off the play-off’s and above Palace in the League. I’d take that right now.

Sea-gals Latest 7 looks at the Women’s League table BHAWFC take on Millwall on Sunday 12 February, two days before the men’s team face Millwall FC in the Championship League. Two victories in one week against a Millwall side would be fantastic for BHA. Similarities have been running deep between the men and women’s teams; BHAWFC progressed to the third round of The FA Women’s Cup and BHAFC recently defeated Wrexham in the third round of the FA Cup to then face Newcastle United. As it currently stands, in the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Devision, BHAWFC sit comfortably at fourth in the table (at time of writing) having played 15 matches, winning 9 of these to earn to bag themselves 24 points.
So who still sits above them in the table? If you have the men’s league memorised, but have no idea how the women’s team are faring, here’s a rundown – a great pub quiz question in the making that will stump most football fans... Colchester Women’s team sit at the top of the League for the Southern Division with 35 points having played 18 games and won 10. Behind them on 31 points sit West Ham Utd who have two games in hand to the current leaders. Portsmouth (always a great clash when it’s the men’s team – and a lot of the women’s side named Portsmouth as their biggest threat this season) sit in third, with 30 points having played just 15 games. So, our BHA women’s side are fourth, with three games in hand to Colchester and 9 points behind. So who’s on their tail? Gillingham are chasing the Albion side with Tottenham Hotspur close behind. What will happen next? Watch this space! Coming up for Brighton & Hove Women’s Football Club: Millwall (H) Sunday 12 February.

blast from the past Penalty shootout As this correspondent was working away in Dubai, I had the misfortune of trying to watch the game on the Internet. I found a site that showed the game after over an hour of searching and only the BBC website updates to keep me going. Finally, way past my bedtime, we get to penalties. Brezovan saves the first and I’m jumping around the hotel lobby. But then disaster! This is the point where the live feed was pulled and I couldn’t get the radio commentary. By the time I’d got onto Seagulls World and had to go through what felt like 750 clicks to start the audio, I tuned in just in time to hear the dulcet tones of the commentator say, “and Brighton are through to the next round of the FA Cup”. Great, but such torture! This is a lesson here, whenever someone suggests watching football via the Internet – don’t go there, it’s too unreliable and likely to induce heart problems (see photo).

he Foxes arrive at the Amex this Saturday. Last September, the Albion lost 1-0 at Leicester and so began a barren run of 10 matches without a win. On that day Albion players were booked four times and Billy Paynter was eventually sent off. Gus complained that the team “didn’t perform” and Sven lowed about his team’s “positive attitude”. Leicester were eight places below the Albion and as I write they are still below the Albion but by just three places. Just a month later following a 3-0 defeat to Millwall last October, Sven-Goran Eriksson got the football coup-de-grace and was told his

Grant Hall and Jordan Adekunle
HOME GAME Grant Hall goes back to his roots at City College Brighton & Hove As a former student at City College Brighton and Hove’s Football Development Academy, Albion centre-half Grant Hall recently returned to the College to congratulate current student Jordan Adekunle, who has just been selected for the England Colleges U/19s 17-man squad to tour Italy in March. Grant, who made his Albion debut against Southampton in their 3-0 Championship win, feels a debt of gratitude to the College. “When I was originally released by Albion, I wasn’t quite sure what to do,” said Grant. “I wanted to stay in football and play at a high level but also keep up my education in case my football career didnt work out so City College was ideal and a very positive experience for me.” Grant had originally been released as an Albion scholar at 16 but the club monitored his progress and were impressed with what they saw.
“Grant’s a good example to young players who get released at 16 and think that their dreams are over but in a lot of cases, players develop at different stages,” says Luke Hampton, team leader for sport at City College. Grant decided to join our academy while also playing non-league football at Lewes and that stage of development was crucial for him to get to where he is today. Hoping to follow in Grants footsteps and make it as a professional is 16-year-old winger Jordan, a former Charlton Athletic youth player. “Jordan’s a bit more of a raw talent,” said Luke. “He’s an eyecatching player and has real pace and power. I think he could learn a lot from Grant’s maturity and general approach to the game and if he focuses himself like Grant has he’ll have a real chance of making it. services were no longer required. After steering Leicester to 10th position last season he became victim to the chairman’s desire for success and promotion. All is still not well with the Foxes. New manager Nigel Pearson recently commented that his side are suffering from “delusions of grandeur”.

Mad Matt Matt Whistler searches for some thespians
I
overheard part of a conversation in Brighton's Mad Hatters Café, that there was a settlement of film makers, comedians, thespians and dancers living on the seafront in Shoreham in old railway carriages and houses named after pantomimes, with no electricity. At around this time my girlfriend robot ATM, had announced she had a confession to make and we should drop in to meet the theatrical folk and drink tea. So there we were on Shoreham beach waiting to meet Jack Nicholson, when one solitary hobbling old man tootled up to me while staring at ATM whose sequins were glistening in the sunlight – he was definitely eying up my girl.
After asking him where Bungalow Town was, he said you are about 100 years too late. The old man told me back in the day, entertainment industry types were often looking for digs to enjoy an unconventional lifestyle when they had performances in Brighton – Bungalow Town was the happening place. Some of the houses were constructed around old railway carriages. He doffed his hat, looked me in the eye, said ‘break a leg’, winked, did a mid air clanging zip-a-dee-doo-dah, then scuttled off with more energy than when he first arrived. ATM made her confession and told me that she had taken every triangular stone off
the Coastline of East Sussex to make prehistoric spears to throw at car sponges, to increase her powers of perception, she then persisted to throw a force field around me that made me to laugh hysterically at her confession and then with her mind, intertwine my arms and legs
like a packet of noodles. I removed one of her circuit boards, once again and carried her back to the house under my arm. Read Matt’s full blog at www.facebook.com/ mattwhistlerbrighton

t is a Saturday morning and I am in the dairy aisle of my local Tesco, when it suddenly occurs to me that I haven’t been in a serious relationship for two years. So strong is the force of this realisation, I nearly drop my mozzarella. “You can’t hurry love,” says H, my first port of call in every emotional maelstrom. I am sat on a step outside the shopping centre, phone wedged against my ear while rifling madly through my carrier bags in search of something to comfort eat. “You’ve got to trust, give it time.” My brow furrows. “Is that a song? Are you quoting The Supremes?” “Sorry, love. I’ve had quite a lot of painkillers. Off my face.” Under cross-examination, it emerges that H – having last night finally enticed a girl into her bedroom on the pretence of showing off her new flat-screen (“You got her round to look at an appliance?” I deadpan. “Could you be any more lesbian?”) – tried to get her leg over and immediately threw her back out.

We are both out of practice I suppose. But while H’s rustiness pertains largely to the physical side of things, mine is focused more on the emotional. I may, over the last two years, have been on more dates than the average calendar, but not one of these budding relationships has come to fruition. And I’m not the only one who wants to know why; nearly all my recent dates have seen a spate of that most hated question: “Why are you still single?” My natural instinct is to look externally. “I guess I haven’t met the right man,” “The island of the thirty- I will shrug, if I’m feeling charitable. “I only ever meet somethings is a curious men with debilitating problems,” is my land where all the natives emotional answer, when I’m not. As I’ve sailed onward through my twenties, drawing inexorably closer to my inevitable destination (the island of the thirty-somethings, a curious land where all the natives drink cappuccinos, carry babies around in holsters, and are in bed by 10pm), I’ve noticed the things I want from a relationship have changed. Gone are the days of halfhearted affairs, of sticking with someone I know is unsuitable on the grounds that it’s better than being alone. When you’re looking to settle down, settling for less suddenly becomes a costly distraction. The worry is I’ve now been single for so long, not only have I gotten used to it; I’ve reached a point where I positively relish it. For all I know, my perfect partner could be staring me right in the face but – so long as I lack the impetus to do anything about it – by the time I reach the island of the thirtysomethings, I’ll be checking into a cabana for one. follow me on twitter

18 SNAP SHOTS
Snap Shots Photographer Diana Frangi captures the faces and places that define our city. This week: Robbie Savage
“
I came down to support the Health and Wellbeing Centre because when I played for Brighton and Hove Albion in 2008 I became friends with the club doctor, Tim Stevenson. Now, along with the superb stadium, there is this great development which puts the Albion at the cutting edge of modern football. What is special about the centre, beside the staff and state-of-the-art facilities, is that it offers a wide range of services to local people and businesses. It is not just for the players but it’s open to everyone in the community.
”
Celebrity footballer and Strictly Come Dancing favourite Robbie Savage came down to his old club, Brighton and Hove Albion, to lend his support to the new Health and Wellbeing Centre run by Doctor Tim Stevenson and his team. Robbie and other club supporters, including Des Lynam and members of the current team, were in attendance at the centre's launch at The Amex Stadium. In keeping with the club's community-based ethos, the centre is open to all and offers first aid training, therapies, life coaching and stress management, as well as private GP services. www.thehealthycompany.com

Bognor 007? I
t’s Bognor, James Bognor. Sadly it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, does it? But that will be the reality in the latest Sam Mendes directed Bond movie Skyfall, when it hits screens later this year. Rumour has it that, due to budget cuts, the spy will be swapping Bali for Bognor to film a few scenes of the much anticipated film. A source told the Daily Mirror that it was due to the ‘stunning beaches’ in Bognor Regis that this location was chosen as the second choice to exotic beaches abroad. The 23rd film in the popular film franchise will see the relationship between 007and M come under scrutiny – we only hope that these aren’t the shots to be filmed beachside. I might have to book a few visits to my new favourite seaside town to catch Daniel Craig in his swimmers!

WILD ABOUT THE BOYS Congratulations to Brighton indie boys The Maccabees for reaching their highest position on the UK Album chart recently. Their latest album, Given To The Wild, entered the charts in the top 5, showing that they haven’t lost their sound since forming in 2004. Going from strength to strength, where other UK indie acts have all but disappeared, the boys have just announced their biggest UK headline tour to date. Be sure to catch them at Brighton Dome on 9 March for a proper homecoming gig.

ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK

Food & Drink Andrew Kay is thwarted by power cuts and busy pubs and ends up in Noori’s
Puris at Noori’s
S
aturday nights are pretty sacred. I prefer to stay in rather than face the city at its busiest, but needs must. So off we went on the Number Seven bus for dinner at Thorne’s. At present Thorne’s is only open for dinner Friday and Saturday so this was our best chance. Or should have been. Sadly a power cut had blighted the North Laine and the owner was calling my mobile to explain the situation as we arrived in the blacked out street. We retired graciously, after all, what else could they do, and we made our way to Pub du Vin to meet Mr R for a recuperative drink and maybe supper. Sadly they had room for us to enjoy a pint, but not a hope in hell of a table for dinner. Collectively we decided it would be three strikes and out and we set about deciding on where to try next. Suddenly it came to me, Nooris, just across the street. Now Noori’s was for many years a favourite and I have very fond memories of some great meals there. Then there was a bit of a wilderness period where they were beset by disasters and somehow it fell off my radar. Now was the time to try again. The interior is pleasantly decorated and the menu is much sharper than in the past with far fewer dishes on offer. The prices are pretty keen too, with nothing scarily expensive. So we had a table at last and a drink and a basket of poppadoms. We also had a noisy table of blokes who seemed to think that doing press-ups was appropriate behaviour for a restaurant, and had “I love paneer, I like they been fitter rather than fatter we the sour flavour and might have been inclined to agree. The menu had many of the usual choices and a nice list of specials that the soft texture and are more unusual. Mr R and Mr L were the weird squeak as surprisingly unadventurous in their choices opting for butterfly prawns. you bite into it” They looked fine if dull but they both really enjoyed them and liked what they thought was a decent portion. I have to agree, butterfly prawn is so often a singular dish. I had my usual favourite of prawn puri, a fried bread topped with prawns in a fresh tomato sauce that is both sweet and sour with a nice hit of chilli. It was prettily presented and both tasty and generous in size. Mr L then chose a lamb biryani declaring that he had not had one for some time. It’s a great option as it comes as a complete meal with the vegetable curry on the side and he was more than happy with his choice. I was not surprised either as the piece of lamb I stole was tender, succulent and tasty.
Mr R hit the chef’s specials with Laal Jaal chicken which at £7.95 was very good value. Flavoured with mustard, ginger, honey, coconut, and chillies it was a lush and vibrant dish packed with big chunks of meat. I had a veggie moment and chose a paneer tikka massala. I love paneer, I like the sour flavour and the soft texture and the weird squeak as you bite into it. The cubed cheese had been marinated in spices, grilled in the tandoor and bathed in a rich sauce. I absolutely loved it. This was good old fashioned Indian restaurant cooking and I was really enjoying it. We shared a good but rather small peshwari naan and a good and rather generous saag bahjee. Eventually the noisy boys left and there was a sense of calm and we relaxed over our pints of beer and Mr L’s bottle of house white which was refreshingly inexpensive (although not as inexpensive as the price on their website, which I assume now is out of date). So for two courses, side dishes and drinks our meal was just over £70 to which they added 10 per-cent service charge. Not bad for a very tasty meal with good service too. On the down side the ‘facilities’ leave much to be desired. They are cramped and shabby at best and when I visited in need of a bit of a clean, not a deep clean but the sort of general tidy up required half way through a busy evening and, dare I suggest it, one populated by rather drunken lads. Other than that one gripe we all enjoyed Noori’s and having perused their cheap lunch and dinner menus, might soon return to try them out. Light bites Pub du Vin ... So there we were, our booking cancelled due to a power cut and Brighton as busy as a very busy thing, which seems odd when every business I talk to seems to be gloom laden about January trade. It was a short walk to Pub du Vin where we were to meet Mr R and by the time we got there I was more than ready for a drink. Mr R had a pint of Meantime lager style beer but I had my eyes on a tankard Message In a Bottle porter. It came with the legend that the recipe was found in a bottle on a beach but cynic that I am I suspect that it might have been amongst the flotsam and jetsam of a marketing person’s imagination. Not that it detracted from this fine beer, not at all. In fact I had two pints in rapid succession and they very successfully knocked all the very sharp corners off what
had been thus far a rather snaggley evening. Pub du Vin always feel like home to me. I spent rather a lot of time in the building when it was the Sussex Arts Club and I was chairman. Now as Pub du Vin it retains that club-like feel and quirky interior. Pint in hand, manager Alex asked if we would like some nibbles. Well with dinner ahead we should have said no, but with no booking we said yes. So the three of us enjoyed a bowl of their perfect pork scratchings and an exemplary scotch egg with curried mayonnaise. Great beers, great nibbles, had they had a table we would most certainly have stayed for dinner. T
he ‘loud’ day of One Inch Badge Records’ annual six-night jaunt celebrating the best of Brighton’s bands immediately revealed the great heavier music at the core of the city’s largely indie-centric scene. With the churning, low-end rumblings of gloriously silly-named doom-meisters Sea Bastard and intense prog-rockers Plague Sermon providing early quality, the genre-defying Negative Pegasus (featuring former My Device frontman Todd, still sporting that manic stare) raised the roof in a pounding burst of electronic, drums and guitar noise. Headlining, nineties grungers I’m Being Good provided a less rhythmic, though just as raucous, mix of Mudhoney stoner crawls and screamy guitar blasts, rounding this showcase off perfectly. M83
The sold-out M83 show could be an early frontrunner for the end of year best gig lists. Buzzy-newcomers Porcelain Raft’s ‘dreamy pop’ vibes aptly set the scene for what was to come with their melodic, genrehopping sounds. M83’s set was
nothing short of sensational. Words such as ‘vast’ ‘expansive’ ‘epic’ ‘euphoric’ are all suitable descriptions but don’t do it justice. Stadium-sized synths, thundering guitars, an army of Apple Macs and countless keyboards, topped with an impressively powerful and evocative vocal performance proved why the French act are worthy of all the critical appraisal they have amassed. It was both ambitious and a triumph. Concorde 2, 22 January JJJJJ Woodrow Whyte

BOOKINGS | MUSIC CHART 31 Concorde 2 was treated to as reggae legend Lee Scratch Perry strolled into town, tipping his goldencrusted cap to his assembled masses, and treating them to the best evening of skanking imaginable. The dub pioneer still exudes a strange and infectious magnetism that instantly drew the eclectic crowd into his grasp as his faultless band made the audience come together and move as one to their stripped down beat. The 75year-old’s voice may be rougher and his movements may be slower, but this is no money-spinning, soulless trip down memory lane – Perry’s music is as relevant now as it has ever been, and the old King of Rocksteady still deserves his place on the throne. SISTER ACT
Despite the irritating schoolgirls surrounding me for the first half, I came away loving this rollicking show. How can you not have fun when the stage is full of nuns in sequined habits getting down and dirty with a score that cleverly apes the Philly sound? With hysterical funk and disco grooves and moves, a fun-filled plot and a terrific set, Sister Act is a musical romp made in heaven. Denise Black as Mother Superior is exactly that, superior, pious and often pompous, but at the denouement shows that she too has a heart of gold and a voice to belt it out with the best of them. In fact she has some of the best songs of the evening. Newcomer Cynthia Erivo as Deloris is a blow you away sensation; moving, funny, sexy and with a voice that will be echoing around theatres for years and years to come. A stage version of the classic film from The Theatre Company Course at The Hawth Crawley
T
he Theatre Company Course is run every Monday night in Crawley by Crawley Arts Development. Each week the students learn not only acting and theatre skills, but develop ideas for a production to be performed in The Hawth Studio. Two years ago the group staged Female Transport by Steve Gooch and last year 21 students participated in a Festival of Theatre with nine plays running over two nights. This year the group are producing the stage version of the classic 1975 film Dog Day Afternoon, which starred Al Pacino. This minimalist, ensemble piece with live music engages with an infamous bank robbery that occurred in Brooklyn, New York City in August 1972. “These people – they are all part of the myth of New York now... crowds cheering at the misfit robbers and booing the police on the streets, sharing pizza and a beer while the robbery turned to hostage taking then to an audacious attempt to demand a plane and fly away to erm, Algeria. It was a joke, a neighbourhood block party but better than anything on TV that night.” (LIFE Magazine, 1972) Dog Day Afternoon, The Hawth Studio, Crawley, Wed 15–Fri 17 February, 7.45pm, £7.50 (discounts: £6.50), box office 01293 553636, www.hawth.co.uk
STAGE: INSPIRATIONAL THEATRE, AFFORDABLE PRICES The phenomenally successful Pay What You Can scheme returns to Eastbourne Theatres this season, giving you the opportunity to see thought-provoking drama at affordable prices.
Be it 20p or £20, there is no restriction on the price you pay. The popular scheme, which was introduced at the Devonshire Park Theatre in October 2010, returns for the opening night of the awardwinning play Mogadishu at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne on Tuesday 6 March.
Eastbourne Theatres Artistic Director Chris Jordan says of the scheme: “This initiative continues to offer everyone the opportunity to come to the theatre and pay whatever they can afford. Pay What You Can has proved extremely popular on the previous nights and it will certainly remain a regular feature each season. We try very hard at Eastbourne Theatres to offer the most competitive ticket prices around and with this scheme audiences can try something new and enjoy a night out without having to worry about the cost – if you can only pay £5 then only pay £5, there really is no catch.” From the company who brought us the startling production Punk Rock, which was also the venues first Pay What You Can evening, Mogadishu explores the clash of youth, class, race and justice. When white secondary-school teacher, Amanda, is pushed to the ground by black student, Jason, she’s reluctant to report him, knowing exclusion could condemn him to a future as troubled as his past. But when Jason decides to protect himself by spinning a story of his own, Amanda is sucked into a vortex of lies in which victim becomes perpetrator. With the truth becoming less clear and more dangerous by the day it isn’t long before careers, relationships and even lives are under threat. Don’t miss your chance to see this acclaimed production, Mogadishu, at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne from Tuesday 6 – Saturday 10 March, with nightly

MUSIC: ELECTRIC SOFT PARADE Electric Soft Parade reform for a one-off gig, despite having never broken up...
B
ack in 2002, and still in their teens, Tom and Alex White released their debut album as Electric Soft Parade, Holes In The Wall. The album was an immediate success, making the Top 40, and included a couple of hit singles in ‘Empty At The End’ and ‘Silent To The Dark II’. It was subsequently nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and the band were named Best New Act by Q. Even more remarkably, Tom was only 17 and Alex 19 when it was released... “We started doing things for real back in 1997 when I was 12 or 13,” says Tom White (including releasing an album under the name The Feltro Media) “We sent a demo to XFM Unsigned on the radio, and a label heard it and signed us.” But despite such promising beginnings, the band never quite fulfilled their potential – their second album The American Adventure didn’t do well enough for their label at the time and they were subsequently dropped. Soldiering on, they released The Human Body EP in 2006 before issuing their final album to date, 2007’s No Need To Be Downhearted. And in the summer of 2008 they played their last gig. “Off the back of that show [with Sparkes] we thought it was a good one to bow out on... But we’re not re-forming, Alex and I never stopped working. It was just a matter of having a conversation and saying, ‘Let’s do it’.” After a series of low-key gigs in Brighton last year, and a couple of Noel Gallagher supports, the band have essentially reformed even though they never officially broke up, the brothers continuing to work independently but also together as members of the acclaimed Brakes. They even released an EP, A Quick One, which amply demonstrated their penchant for classic indiepop, full of melody. “The industry keeps changing – all these new tools for people to use, but we’re not really interested in all that, we’re only interested in the songs... It’s probably not what record labels want to hear, but we’re very old school people... we make a slight concession to Facebook because such a huge proportion of people are on it... we're still essentially just a bunch of guys hacking away at guitars in a bedroom... There’s a lot of love for the band, and things are snowballing again. Hopefully we’ll do another album this year.” This one-off gig celebrates the tenth anniversary of the release of Holes In The Wall. It's original brew of psyche-pop, epic rock, experimentation and more downbeat acoustic songs is nothing short of brilliant. The NME gave it 9/10 at the time, and deservedly so. EVENTS: BRIGHTON SCIENCE FESTIVAL This year’s Science Festival shakes up Brighton with the theme Catastrophe
A
n exciting festival for all ages, shaken to the core by both the oldest and the latest ideas: quantum, consciousness, religion – what’s it all about? Catastrophe is one theme, and Robin Ince, Marcus Brigstocke and Helen Keen leave you shaking with laughter as they take science to a new place – comedy. The first weekend of the festival, 11–12 February, has plenty of family events including ‘How to be Magic’. Explore the science of magic and the magic of science alongside award-winning magicians Simon Ambrose, Dan Edwards and Leon Simmonds. Now in its eighth year, the festival is a fun way to discover where we come from and debate about where we may go in the future. The Duke Of York’s cinema will show special screenings, on the 17 and 26, of The Day The Earth Caught Fire and Mulholland Drive. Latest Musicbar’s ‘Pocket Science Funfair’ entertains with ‘Guess The Weight Of The Cake’ and Richard Robinson questions why the toast always lands butterside down. This month’s Cafe Scientifique ‘Fone Fun’ looks at how your mobile actually works, so bring your phone and explore the science behind it, while White Heat weekend at Hove Park School offers a feast of hands-on, challenging and amazing games. The final weekend of the festival sees ‘Intuition and Ingenuity – An Art Exhibition In Celebration Of The Life Of Alan Turing’ at Lighthouse, in honour of the father of the computer. Big Science Saturday will offer talks and debates for those of us who want to understand our future before we even get there. For instance the discussion ‘The Doomsday Handbook’ unveils the science and sociology behind some of the ways the world might end. In ‘The Geology of Catastrophe,’ Todd Hinkley of the US Geological Survey, runs through some of the disasters we’ve avoided. In ‘You’re Looking Very Well,’ biologist Lewis Wolpert explores aspects of old age. We now live longer than any time in history. Join in the discussion as to how we should deal with this, and can, or should we, prevent it? It's time to get your family enthusiastic about science! S Serena Thirkell
ART: SERENA THIRKELL Creeping into the Garden of Worthing Museum and Art Gallery this month are strange metal mythical creatures and monsters made by Sussex-based artist Serena Thirkell. Made from broken agricultural machinery, old garden tools and even dentists’ equipment, the exhibition includes a rusty Belling heater which becomes a bee and an old farmer’s plough is transformed into a huge helicopter called a ‘Helicopterix’. Serena Thirkell: The Garden of Forgotten Engineers, Smiths and Bicycles, Worthing Museum & Art Gallery, 01903 221448. Until 5 May ART: I HEART U Exciting new Valentine’s themed event, featuring A Portrait of Brighton art exhibition is set to launch on Sunday 5 February 2012 at the JAG gallery/open studios, 283a Madeira Drive. Local artist Ryan Brown launches his new selection of unique pencil, paint, and mixed media work as part of A Portrait Of Brighton, and includes pieces inspired by Brighton’s very own Naked Bike Ride and Pride. The JAG gallery/open studios houses a variety of art by many Brighton-based artists who will all be donating pieces of their collection for a grand charity auction. Ryan will also be donating
£100 from every £500 (2’x2’ canvas) portrait commissioned on the day of the event. I Heart U, JAG Gallery, 283a Madera Drive, Brighton. Until 19 February FILM: JACK AND JILL (PG) Dir: Dennis Dugan There’s been much made of this Adam Sandler vehicle – both good and bad – with leaked photos from the set starting ages ago so that it almost feels like the film has been and gone already. Suffice to say, it’s a rib-tickling comedy about a brother and sister who don’t get on. Also starring Katie Holmes and Al Pacino flexing their comedy muscles. Released Fri 3 February Showing at Odeon and Cineworld

tarring the little sister of Disney darlings Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen you’d be forgiven for expecting Elizabeth Olsen’s second star vehicle to be a bit more pap, a bit more mainstream, and perhaps a good old fashioned romcom. Martha Marcy May Marlene is none of these, and has been collecting award wins and nominations for its cast and crew, and star up and down the festival scene to prove it. Elizabeth Olsen stars as Martha, a young woman who has recently escaped from a cult environment and its charismatic leader Patrick. Attempting to assimilate herself back into her family home and a normal life, she finds it increasingly difficult as paranoia and painful memories lead her to believe that the cult was not as easy to escape as she first thought. With shadows around every corner and a narrative perspective leading you to find doubt in everything, this is an impressive and tense psychological thriller set to leave questions with its audience. Also starring Sarah Paulson, John Hawkes, Hugh Dancy and Maria Dizzia. Released Friday 3 February Showing at Odeon and Cineworld

wednesday 1 Natural World: Tiger Dynasty BBC2, 8pm Captivating for their colours, power and sheer beauty, tigers are pretty breath-taking. Baghani the tigress is airlifted from her home in an Indian park to a new reserve, where she will have to learn to hunt wild boar, fight for territory and maybe meet young male Rajore. Love’s young stripe.
Midsomer Murders ITV1, 8pm Crikey! Who’d’ve thought there might possibly be a murder around a Civil War enactment involving an aristocratic family and sightings of a headless horseman? Without Tim Burton anywhere to be seen? Barnaby and Jones put on their thinking caps to get to the bottom of this historical caper and save the day.
Outnumbered BBC4, 10pm A good old mid week giggle from the award-winning partly improvised family comedy. Mum is convinced that Jake has a secret – of course he has, he’s a teenager. Meanwhile Ben is determined to enter the school talent competition with an unusual double act. Giving that boy attention can only be trouble.
