EDITOR’S NOTE
I
t’s February, there’s snow in the air, it’s almost ... Valentine’s Day! Young lovers, hopeless (and hopeful) romantics unite – this is your time. Stoic singletons and cynics, hunker down – it’ll all be over soon. Let’s be honest though, if you’re the romantic type and want to go all out this Val Day, Brighton is the city in which to do it. You may want to say it with a gift, also, and if you do, we’ve a few ideas for unusual gifts – all of which you’ll find on your doorstep, figuratively speaking – on page 9. We’re also screening Brighton-based ‘pseudo rom-com’ My Accomplice on Latest TV on Val Day itself, see page 33 for more details. And as if that weren’t enough romance already, this issue also boasts our very special, much anticipated Wedding Feature ... we’ve a few happily marrieds here at L-HQ already, and
a few of us may admit to going a bit soft in the middle during the making of this issue. My last wedding experience (as a guest, I hasten to add) was a truly joyous occasion, fueled by a live band, an unnecessary amount of champagne and an unsightly food stain on my otherwise beautiful dress that was the source of much hilarity for other guests. I’ve since been informed that nobody except the bride should wear white, so maybe it served me right? Oops. We’ve worked hard to bring together tips, ideas and even an essential ‘wedding checklist’ to help plan the wedding journey from conception right up to the Big Day itself. Has anyone bought a hat yet? Five facts you never knew about fantabulous Hove: 1 Hove was originally called 'Hovel', but the 'l' fell off the first welcome sign. At the time a local wag, when asked if he lived in Hovel, was heard to answer “No – Hove actually,” and a legend was born. 2 Poltergeists are troublesome guests, hurling objects about and overturning furniture. Not so in the Seafield pub, whose mild-mannered poltergeist, dubbed by regulars 'Wreck-less Eric', collects the empties. His only misdemeanours are intermittently shouting answers in the quiz and eviscerating anyone who orders coffee. 3 A1 News on Blatchington Road is a newsagents with a twist – it specializes in periodicals that deal exclusively with incidents on, and issues surrounding, the Great North Road. 4 In 2013 the residents of Poets' Corner were each issued with a free satnav app as all the pubs there had changed their names so often it was no longer possible to follow or give directions. 5 Like Venice, Hove has an elected Doge. Past holders of this exalted office include Derek Jamieson, Sir Roger De Coverley, Alfalfa, Pat Coombs, Captain Blood, the Birdseye Burgers couple, Lene Lovich, the Professor from Michael Bentine's 'Potty Time', Childe Roland, Brian the Weetabix, Dolly Pond, Ozymandias, Sly the Cat, Cecil Northcote Parkinson, Preston from Big Brother, Nellie Pickersgill, and Manimal.

PEOPLE VENUS BUSINESS WOMEN AWARDS’ WINNERS ANNOUNCED Friday 23 January saw the second year of the Venus Business Women Awards, and their National Finals doubled in size with 124 regional winners competing for the National Trophy for their category. The National Finals brings together all the regional winners, a group of truly inspirational and influential women, to an event where the crème de la crème vie for the National title in their respective categories. This year, 22 winners from eight regions were crowned at a lunchtime celebration at the beautiful Hand Picked Hotel in Audley’s Wood. The Chairman and Chief Executive of Hand Picked Hotels, Julia Hands, remarked that she had never experienced such a wonderful atmosphere in any of her hotels before. The deserving National winners were chosen from a massive 13,225 nominations and applications as well as 34,066 votes. With inspirational speakers Jenni Steel and Dr Lynda Shaw, the day also included stories of hardship and triumph with plenty of laughter and many tears. Talking about the phenomenal growth of the Venus Awards, Founder Tara Howard, herself a business woman and mother of four, commented; “It really is inspiring to see how much support and enthusiasm there is for the awards and what a difference they can make. I’ve even had past winners confess to me that the awards have changed their lives – that’s really powerful, and drives me forward to expand and launch the awards in new regions to recognise more deserving women.” The National Winners for Brighton & Sussex were: Compare and Share (Benita Matofska) and Stand Up Marketing – Charity Chuckle (Kerry Herbert) To find out more visit www.venusawards.co.uk

The free workshop provided Health and Social Care workers with advice on the new Care Certificate being introduced in 2015. Karen Stevens, Skills for Care Location Manager for Sussex, led the sector conversation. Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat In the coming weeks the city council will have to decide its budget. This will be the culmination of a process which began in July 2014 when councillors asked officers to develop proposals to meet the £26 million budget gap we face in the next financial year. Since then there has been a huge amount of debate, consultation, research and hard work. Lots of information has been provided online at www.brightonhove.gov.uk/bhbudget and surveys have also been sent out to a representative 1,000 citizens. Budget information has been presented to public meetings of the business community, voluntary sector, residents associations and more. It is an incredibly challenging time for all councils. Recent analysis by the Financial Times confirmed that councils have been by far the worst cut part of government, with budget cuts amounting to 55% in real terms. Our services are seeing rising demand due to our growing population, people living longer and a baby boom. This means our public services will need to change to deliver more for less. It’s a very difficult, uncertain time for staff and service users waiting to know what will happen. I think the level of government cuts to councils are totally wrong – they are counterproductive and risk harming those who most need help. Privately many councillors of all parties that I meet around the country feel the same way. But in the end all councillors have a legal duty to set a balanced budget for their council. They are obliged to make do with diminished resources. There will be big political arguments and points of principal in the coming weeks. Yet ultimately, across party lines, we will have to find agreement and do the absolute best we can for our city in the toughest of times.

Are we dying sooner than we should? Mortality rates suggest preventable causes cost too many Brighton lives
C
ancer is the biggest cause of premature death in Brighton and Hove. It claims the lives of 30 per cent of all adults who are under 75 when they die. Locally there has been a decline in the death rate – or mortality rate – but it’s been nowhere near as significant as it has been across the rest of the country. Seventeen local doctors’ surgeries took part in an audit which found that four out of ten cancers could be prevented by people adopting healthier lifestyles. Smoking and drinking were flagged up. Being overweight doesn’t help, while exercise does. Encouraging patients to go to the doctor promptly when they have worrying symptoms can be crucial. Correct early diagnosis and timely consultations, scans and follow-up appointments are also vital. Many professionals realise they could do more to monitor patients known to be at risk, chase up those who miss appointments and those who don’t come for screening. A similar picture emerges with the next main causes of avoidable deaths – heart disease, lung disease and diabetes. A report to members of Brighton and Hove City Council spelt out some of the issues around all three conditions. Two thirds of those who died prematurely were men and the death rates were “significantly higher in Queen’s Park, East Brighton, Hollingdean and Stanmer, and Moulsecoomb and Bevendean wards”. A separate audit by the Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group – known as the Preventing Premature Mortality Audit – involved every GP surgery in the
We as a society do appallingly in terms of the care of our elderly people city. The level of buy-in was described as “a first for this type of work across the country”. Katie Stead, the GP lead for primary care quality and public health in Brighton and Hove, and Kate Gilchrist, the head of public health intelligence, presented their findings to councillors last week. This was the first stage in trying to tackle the underlying problems, they told the council’s Health and Wellbeing Overview and Scrutiny Committee. Already the council and health chiefs have agreed to take on six more health trainers to help people with chronic conditions clean up their lifestyle. There are
already four. A report by Dr Stead and Ms Gilchrist said: “The health trainer programme is a costeffective and well-evidenced approach to reducing health inequalities and improving health outcomes.” They found that patients who died prematurely tended to have suffered ill health, often requiring time in hospital. More than a third had been to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department. Helping them to stay fit and to eat, drink and smoke less is cheaper than having them repeatedly stay in hospital. Some of the patients appeared to have been lonely or isolated, with a complex mix of medical problems rather than just one condition, sometimes including mental health problems. Deprivation and depression went hand in hand with too much drink in some cases. Housing could also be an issue. Separately, a local campaigner Jean Calder spoke out about the care of elderly people during a discussion on The Vote on Latest TV. She cited a study last month in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. It suggested that patients admitted from care homes were much more likely to be dehydrated and at risk of dying while in hospital. She said: “We as a society do appallingly in terms of the care of our elderly people. More and more information (is) coming out about poor care in care homes and nursing homes. There’s been a recent study … if you go into hospital as an elderly person, you’re five times more likely to be dehydrated if you’ve come from a care home than if you’ve come from your own home. “They were speculating that this is because in care homes perhaps people are deliberately not being given enough fluid because of problems about incontinence. That may well be one reason. I suspect that the problem is far greater. You’ve got a huge number of premature deaths and we’re just not looking at it properly.” Recent clinical audits and follow-up action suggests that doctors locally are trying to tackle the high level of premature deaths in Brighton and Hove. It is acknowledged that there is still some way to go.

08 ART DECO
DÈCORATIF Calling all style lovers to Brighton’s Thistle Hotel for the Art Deco Fair
T
he next Decofairs will be held on Sunday 15 February from 10am to 4pm, at the elegant and central new venue the Thistle Hotel on Kings Road, Brighton. The Art Deco style spanned the period between World Wars I and II, peaking in the late 1920s and early '30s. It emphasized form as much as function and focused on glamour and opulence. Art Deco fixtures were futuristic for their era, with polished, shiny materials such as chrome and brass, with many reflect a strong geometric influence. As the Great Depression deepened, Art Deco became more and more popular, providing a sense of escapism for a world that desperately needed it. It quickly became a popular style for interior decorating. Art Deco went on to have a massive impact on popular culture that is still being felt today. Once out of fashion for a few decades, Art Deco is now experiencing a resurgence and period Art Deco pieces as well as reproductions are highly sought after. Art Deco was most popular in America and Europe, it affected all areas of the decorative arts and was considered very glamorous, elegant, functional and modern. If you like bold and flashy jewellery, dressing as a flapper or all things chrome, you’ll want to visit Decofairs and have a look at the style that made Miami South Beach so famous. To bring Art Deco flair into your home, you can start off with bold wallpaper, and add the bold use of materials in glass, shiny fabrics, metallic paints and mirrors. Bold oil paintings, sculptural table lamps, ornate bedroom and finely detailed furniture can bring instant Art Deco appeal to your home. Decofairs offers you a unique and vast collection of the finest Art Deco pieces from a wide selection of exhibitors. The fair displays quality bronze and ivory figures, lighting, pewter, ceramics, furniture, jewellery and silver, assembled for both experienced collectors and the discerning visitor in search of the perfect gift. Decofairs’ central focus will always remain Art Deco, but Vintage from 1850-1970, and other 20th century art styles such as Art Nouveau and Bauhaus will also be included – from the ‘Decades of Design’. Decofairs will continue to run six Sunday fairs a year, always from 10am to 4pm. The dates for 2015 are: February 15, April 26, June 14, August 9, October 11 and December 13. The Thistle Brighton has now become the home of Art Deco in Brighton, selling high quality Art Deco collectibles. Don’t miss it! For more information about Decofairs, visit www.decofairs.co.uk or email bookings@decofairs.co.uk if you would like to reserve a stall

WEDDING SPECIAL 15
TAILOR-MADE Claire Western, Independent Wedding Celebrant, can tailor bespoke ceremonies to cater for all tastes, beliefs ... and locations
Y
our special day should be perfect in every way. So how wonderful to have the ceremony of your dreams! A ceremony that contains all that is most meaningful to you both, to share with all of your family and friends in the venue of your choice. A celebrant ceremony can take place anywhere and is beautifully tailored to your needs. It may be as dignified as a church wedding or as frivolous as a party.
Weddings/Civil Partnerships When you are choosing where to have one of the most important ceremonies of your life, you may be very glad to know that there is a third alternative! So you have already decided that you don’t want a church wedding but you would love your ceremony to happen in a special place that has meaning for you. This could be in woodland, on the beach, in marquees, on boats, in castles, your own back garden or even the Herstmonceux Observatory! I can conduct your wedding ceremony absolutely anywhere that you can get your guests to come to. Also, because I am an ‘Independent’ Celebrant, you can include any aspects of a non-religious, spiritual or religious nature in the ceremony. You can have a traditional ceremony with your wedding and ring vows and readings, a ‘Handfasting Ceremony’ (Pagan), or a mix and match of different elements. It can be exactly what you want it to be, as is only right and proper on one of the most important days of your life! Celebrant weddings are inclusive of all the family and couples with children can make them a part of the ceremony. You can get the legal part of your marriage out of the way in just 15-20 minutes with the minimum of effort in the registry office, with your two witnesses, on another day (in the week, when it’s cheap!) and save all the ceremony and celebrating for your specially chosen venue with as many of friends and family as you choose to invite. Then the party can continue. I also conduct Renewal of Vows ceremonies, if you wish to re-affirm the commitment you made in your wedding some time ago. If you go on to having children, I can also conduct your Baby Naming Ceremony.
About Me I am an Independent Celebrant, which means that I am not aligned with any particular religion or belief. I will follow your wishes for your ceremony and will make suggestions according to my experience. I offer wedding ceremonies, civil partnerships, renewal of vows and baby naming to clients throughout the South East of England and elsewhere. How it works is that I come to see you for an initial consultation – if you decide to work with me, then I will put together ideas from our chat and my own research and will email you. There is a wide range of readings, poems, songs and music that can be included. Elements from any culture can be incorporated into the ceremonies. I will then prepare your unique ceremony. I will of course be at the wedding rehearsal, though will not give away too much of the actual ceremony! Claire Western, Sussex Wedding Celebrant, 07535 090577 sussexweddingcelebrant.co.uk
“I always knew I wanted a wedding somewhere a little unusual, and I also knew that meant looking at venues that might not be licensed for weddings. I found my dream venue and then was lucky enough to find Claire to perform our ceremony. Claire really got to know who we were as a couple, visiting us in our home and letting us ramble on about first dates and aspirations for the future. She took all that we are/were and created a bespoke, personal ceremony that was truly unique to us. Claire has such an easy manner and great humour which made the whole experience so simple. With all the other stresses of a wedding, this was the one element I didn’t worry about. On the day, Claire was that familiar face that we’d been dealing with standing with a lovely big smile at the front, with an aura of calm. When I forgot my words, she quickly stepped in to lend me her book that had it all laid out for us. We had such an amazing ceremony and it wouldn’t have been possible without her guidance, creativity and assurances.” Hannah

o here it is, the last knockings of my fifties, one more final year of being fifty something before the big six zero. And what a decade it has been. I wish I could say that it has been a good one and perhaps in many ways it has. There were certainly high points, big ones, and lows too, deep ravines that have left gaping scars in my world, some of which will never heal. I’m sure I am not alone in that, experience carries a very sharp knife indeed and cuts to the bone when it chooses to do so. But the highs – such highs, so many ambitions achieved, so many people who showed trust in me and in what I do. To all of you, and I hope that you know who you are, I send my heartfelt thanks. And there is so much more that I still have to do, so many ideas
ANOTHER YEAR OLDER
Age is merely a state of mind – and my mind is in a state buzzing around the gluey beehive that is my brain. I know that many of you will have created a bucket list, that wonderful collection of things and ideas that you would like to see achieved before, well let’s say before too long, there are too many cliched bucket references that I could call into play at this point. My bucket is not so much a list as a slop bucket, a primordial swamp of stuff, such raggedy stuff, that bobs about in there until something surfaces and materialises into something of substance. Of course not all substances are good and quite a lot of the stuff that emerges from my swamp has to be stamped on or burnt before it reaches creative puberty, let alone maturity. It really is a good thing that only I can see in there. Some of it though, I do want to see emerge, I won’t claim butterflylike, or moth even, but emerge to take on life. I need to do all this, it’s what makes me tick. That said I also need to try and slow down a little, pace myself. It’s what all of my friends tell me; “Slow down Andrew, take it easy, get some rest.” The concern is heartening to be sure and I am grateful, even though

to recycle that experience into something more positive, but I will, I am sure of that. Anyway, this Thursday is my 59th birthday and I would like to ask you all a favour. Many happy returns would of course be nice, well for me at least. No, what I want is permission to carry on carrying on. Yes, just like the classic British movie comedies, that will do for me for sure. A few weeks ago I proved just that. I had been poorly whilst in Vancouver and a couple of days without eating left me a tad slimmer. The morning I felt better I met my lovely friend Ms R in the hotel lobby. She had been very kind bringing me drinks and the like and was, I think, glad to see me up and better – glad until I stood and started to walk across the lobby. After a few paces my now baggy trousers simply fell to the ground. It was a comedy moment to be sure and a great way to head into the last year of my fifties – graceless, bare bummed and typically Andrew Kay.

didn’t expect to go to the GCSE Science LIVE event in London and be told, in all seriousness, about the possibility of time travel by Professor Jim Al-Khalili. But then again, years ago, we would have laughed at the idea of travelling to the moon, at the concept of making babies in a test-tube (Professor Robert Winston was also there!) and at the existence of the invisible world of the micro-organisms (so vital to health and disease). Al-Khalili explained that not only do the laws of physics allow for time travel but travelling to the future has been proven possible in many experiments. Newton integrated time into his laws of motion and many of us imagine time as flowing at a constant rate, independent of space. However, Einstein, through his study of light, discovered that time and space are not independent but are linked as space-time; which he described in his special theory of relativity. Einstein then detailed how gravitational effects of matter affect space-time in his general theory of relativity. For anyone that travels close to the speed of light, time runs more slowly. If you were to travel around the galaxy in a rocket for, say, four years and then return back to earth, forty years would have gone by. You would've literally travelled into the future. Time travel into the past is, however, more tricky to explain – but can't be ruled out. Al-Khalili used a scenario in which Leonardo da Vinci invents a time machine and sends a picture back in time to himself based on Mona Lisa. This is rather apt, since here at the STEM centre we are writing a script for a Dr Who play where we rescue Leonardo da Vinci and bring him back to the present. To top it off, we have come across a 3d printer called ‘xyz da Vinci’, which is central to our plot, and we are busy trying to raise funds in order to buy it!

spent some time recently chewing the proverbial fat with the guy and girls responsible for Latest TV’s Sketchers. It was a genuine pleasure to hang out with a bunch of such talented performers whom I’m proud to call friends and, difficult though it was, I managed to wring a few sane and sensible answers to my questions out of them.

WRITER/DIRECTOR MICHELLE SHORTLAND Can you describe your working process? “In a word, no. Our working process is rife with conflict, arguments and spats, but it’s because we all care about making the end product the best it can be! Our aim is to entertain the audience of course, but if we can make people think while they giggle then so much the better.” Have you encountered any problems with your tight shooting schedule? “Yes! I passed out whilst holding Becky’s face. I was stretching her skin so the makeup artist could apply latex and I just hit the floor. The shoot the previous night had finished at 3.00am – I was so, so tired!” Comedy is very personal and subjective, do you all share the same tastes? “No, our tastes in comedy differ a huge amount ... which is why the show is so eclectic.” WRITER/DIRECTOR BECKY AUSTIN What’s your particular comedic angle with the show?
“Throughout the writing process, we kept saying, “Let’s write what makes us laugh” – because we’re humans, and we always intended our audience to be mostly made up of humans too.” How would you like to see the show develop?
“This is the first comedy I have ever done, so any chance I get to do more would be amazing! I’m actually working on developing one of the sketches into a full show, so keep an eye out for the pilot for that series.” Which comedians do you most admire, and what do you think sets them apart from their peers? “Oh, that’s a really hard question. I’m a big fan of Steve Carell. His versatility as a character actor is fantastic, yet somehow he always manages to keep a truthfulness to the roles he plays.”

Finally, actor Robert Holden got the spotlight to himself. As is his wont, Rob threw my questions into the air and let rip: “We each came to this project knowing that we had to make a twenty minute product and so we divided the time by three. Michelle and Becky had equal creative time. I’m with Michelle on the harmony issue, but I think a little conflict helps bring out the best in you. The show is about pleasing us, rather than the masses, although we obviously hope it gets a large audience. Sketch shows, by their very nature, are hit and miss. Our remit was to see what we were capable of as writers, directors and performers. As to my own personal comedy hall of fame, as great as the girl’s are – and I love them dearly – my idols are the Pythons or The Kids in the Hall, and Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in their Not Only... But Also days. I’m also a huge Hancock fan, and I love Mitchell and Webb!” Many thanks to the Sketchers team for their time and thoughts. Be sure to catch the show! Le Geekend
AAAHH, GEEK OUT! Brighton Science Festival celebrate their tenth year t’s the Brighton Science Festival’s tenth birthday. When we started it, people thought a Science Festival was a ridiculous idea. You couldn’t have the words ‘science’ and ‘festival’ in the same sentence, they said; there was just nothing remotely like fun in science. Now we have been joined by the Digital Festival, the Big Bang, the Mini Maker Faire, and there are three science toyshops in Brighton alone. Applications for the science courses in both Universities are up and Sussex businesses are joining the party. You’re surrounded. Surrender!

And it is fun. There’s comedy at every turn. Richard Wiseman cut his teeth in cabaret and magic. He knows how to tell a ripping yarn. It just so happens his yarns are about the science of delusions: how little we know, how much we make up, and this year why we dream. He’s just one of many at Le Geekend, (Friday 27 February to Sunday 1 March). Beside five talks a day, you will rub along with cutting edge technology. The Large Hadron Collider display is designed to explain all that weird quantum stuff in simple English. Speaking of cutting edge, Kings College researchers are showing how to grow teeth. Dentures will be a thing of the past soon, as we plant teeth like sweet corn. Want a whiff of the future? Here it is.
Bright Sparks and Half Term And we need to get the next generation of geniuses up and running. All half term (Saturday 14 February – Sunday 22 February) there are events that get them going and keep them coming. Bright Sparks (Sat 14 – Sun 15) has been amazing for a decade. The half term workshops are new, though – about five a day – for young people with independent minds to learn something startling, get a bit dirty, come away with a nugget of knowledge, a surprise or two, a bunch of skills and a couple of magic tricks, have fun with friends, make altogether new friends ... do a bit of shopping, hang out. It’s a long month, but never ever dull. The Brighton Science Fetival runs from 5 February – 1 March 2015. For more information, visit www.brightonscience.com

Sussex was represented by winter paralympian Heather Mills, 47, who went head to head with Lady Victoria Hervey, Ashley Roberts and Made In Chelsea star Louise Thompson. Heather competed in the terrifying downhill Skeleton event and unfortunately was pipped at the post by fellow competitors. The former model and winter sports star then faced a giant ski jump, and unfortunately lost again by literally inches. On the side, she didnt have far to go to rest her weary bones, as Heather has a pile in the Austrian Alps where the show is filmed. Meanwhile, flipping over one Channel to Five, over at the Celebrity Big Brother house news reaches us that Katie Price’s hairdresser has been sneaked into the back door of the diary room to give the starlet ‘secret treatments’. Following in the footsteps of evictee Patsy Kensit, Katie has been receiving secret wash and blow dry sessions from stylist Mikey Kardashian (no relation). INNOVATIVE Strikingly adventurous dinners, Vancouver style ast week I wrote about the kind of culinary fare that I had expected to find in Vancouver, fresh fish and Asian delights. There were many and I could have happily dined on sushi the whole time I was there. But the culinary scene there is far wider than that and I was lucky enough to be guided around the city by my friend Ms B, a fellow foodie writer and ex Brightonian. In Vancouver she is well known and respected so as we hopped from restaurant to restaurant and bar to bar we were greeted by much cheek kissing and love. Having met her at Joe Forte’s and devoured a mountain of oysters, she took me off to Hawksworth where chef David Hawksworth gave me a guided tour of his kitchens and restaurant, all very impressive and certainly very fine. Sadly we did not have a booking for dinner, nor the appetite for his delicious dishes after the oyster binge. But I did have a stunning cocktail at the bar, a Rolls Royce prepared by barman Cooper. It was better than good. From there we went on to Yew at The Four Seasons, where the spot prawns left us speechless with delight and the cocktails equally so. Then to Wildebeest where a plate of veal tongue hit the right spot for me and a superb horse tartare was equally impressive. The tea based frozen cocktails were pretty good too, but there was little time to ponder before Ms B dragged me away to Gastown. Gastown is Vancouver’s trendy quarter, with streets lines with smart fashionable shops and eateries of all kinds. I had already been given a heads up about L’Abattoire by a kind barman on Granville Island and Ms B confirmed that this was certainly the place to be. We arrived pretty late but the place was indeed the place to be, and we struggled to find

a space to sit. Eventually though the staff found us stools and a high table to perch at and we were able to order. I love octopus so that was a no brainer, and we had a second tartare that was as equally impressive as the first. But it was my cocktail that filled me with delight, and I have to admit that I only ordered it because it sounded odd – no, it sounded weird. Who would have thought that an avocado gimlet would either look or taste as good as this – but it did! It was a delightfully coloured and creamily textured joy and had I not already had a few drinks I could have easily had a second, if not a third. Perhaps good that I refrained though, as avocado is such a calorific ingredient. At this point I was ready for sleep and a yomp back across the city to my hotel and comfy bed. Ms B however was having none of this and I was forced, out of politeness you understand, to accompany her to yet another bar. This time it was Diamond and the handsome bartender, they eschew the term ‘mixologist’ it seems, made me another fine drink. Cocktails are big in Vancouver right now and we spent quite a lot of time making an in depth study of the art. Finally we hit one last bar, yes, I know I should

have quit whilst I was ahead but that damned Ms B is a mightily persuasive force. This time to a bar that I will not name as the bartender – and owner – was one of those guys who thinks that it is funny to be rude. Well, Mr Fawlty he was not. I had a small beer and left. The next morning more than made up for that as we visited Medina, right now the city’s hottest brunch joint. Here I feasted on a wonderful minced lamb and eggs on a truly delicious flatbread. The whole was vibrant with the flavour of coriander seed, my favourite spice, and I washed the lot down with a weirdly amazing buttermilk soda. I know that sounds vile and once again I chose it out of sheer devilment, but it was delicious, really surprisingly good and a flavour that I find hard to describe. Vancouver was amazing from start to finish, The Parker is an exceptional vegetarian restaurant, the sushi scene is stunning, the cocktails are amazingly good and even their street foods are to be reckoned with – adventurous, tasty and very affordable right now.

taly offers the greatest variety of quality wine. That is the considered opinion of Ian D’Agata, co-author of the annual D’Agata and Camparini Guide to Italy’s Best Wines. He is also the regional chair for Italy for the annual Decanter wine awards, which means he knows lots about Italian wine. This leads us this week to discussing inexpensive but quality wines from Italy. The Fattoria Casabianca wine estate – 654 hectares in the Murlo municipality in the province of Siena in central Italy – is one such example. The property is soon to be certified organic. Casabianca produces a range of Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG wines. DOCG is the Italian wine world’s way of designating wine quality via geographical region and name. It is based on winemaking zones with particular traditions and future potential. The system of “denominazione di origine controllata” (DOC) or denomination of controlled origin, is a translation of the French AOC. Italy has about 300 DOCs. The Italians added another acronym to define even higher quality wine by putting a “G” at the end of DOC standing for “garantitia,” or guaranteed. This is reserved for the most elite wines. Fattoria Casabianca has three levels of red wine. The introductory Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG 2013 is 80% sangiovese with the balance a mix of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, canaiolo and colorino, and has soft and chalky tannins and a nose of fresh but slightly unripe cherries. Today, sangiovese is the most famous grape in central Italy. Its name comes from the Latin “sanguis Jovis,” or blood of Jove (Jove was another name for Jupiter, the king of the Roman gods). Colorino is used primarily as a way to impart depth of hue in a red. The Casabianca reserve red is a very fruity wine, with pronounced flavours and aromas of mocha coffee and cherry plus quite marvellous length. It is another marvellous wine that is very reasonably priced, retailing for under 10 euro in Europe. The company’s flagship wine is the Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva DOCG Belsedere 2008. It is 100% sangiovese, and offers aromas of black and red fruits plus liquorice and tobacco and plenty of spice. The tannins are especially inviting and the wine hangs around in one’s mouth for what seems like an eternity. Drink with strong meats.
rowing up in a Buckinghamshire village surrounded by dung-splattered fields courtesy of the local dairy, I’ve had a hard time coming round to the attraction of cows. (The Dane feels the same way about pigs.) In fact it’s only due to the alarming number of artists who are quite besotted by bovines that I’ve come to grudgingly admit that those big dark eyes might just possess some unfathomable hypnotism. Just so long as they’re staring at me from a wall, not in the Liz Chaderton face on the walk to school. But what I really appreciate about Daisy and co is the emotions and interpretations they inspire, and the wonderful variety of fieldwork that’s been arriving in the Arty inbox for our new book. According to Veronica van Eijk, cows have a way of looking at you – curious, interested, haughty – and it’s these strong expressions that she captures so truthfully by close observation. Veronica lives next door to a dairy farm, and after seeing her neighbours’ excitement at ‘Spring Turnout’ – high on fresh air and fresh grass – her latest studies form a series of running and leaping cows. Don’t know about you, but I’m crazy for them. You can see Veronica’s work in Veronica van Eijk the Chalk Gallery, Lewes. Closer to home, you’ll find a very different approach taken by Liz Chaderton in ART5 Gallery. Liz works mainly in watercolour, aiming to capture the essence of her subjects rather than the detail, and leaving space for the viewer’s imagination to wander. So if you feel like a Psychedelic Cow trip, head to Bartholomews. Don’t miss: 'Back with a Bang' is ink_d Gallery’s first show of the year, and celebrates their amazing stable of supercool artists. Look forward to brand new work from the likes of Ian Hodgson, Dan Baldwin, Ryan Callanan, Pure Evil, Jake Wood-Evans and more. Until 8 March. www.artymagazines.com

Forgive me for sounding Ostentatious, no that’s Austentatious, as in Jane Austen. One of the undisputed comedy hits of 2014 was this improvised play in the inimitable style of the great author that is spun from audience suggestions as it develops live on stage. Declared by the Guardian to be one of the most enjoyable shows of the Edinburgh Fringe – pop on your corsets and knee breeches and head down to The Old Market on 20 February. Finally, a curve ball. If there’s someone you want to sweep off their feet this Valentine’s day there’s no better place to do it than in the Corn Exchange for their loved up ceilidh. Led by the ever popular Sussex Pistols, their resident caller will help you through the dance steps. Brighton’s most barnstorming barn dance promises great music, great fun and love in the air this Valentine’s weekend.

COMEDY Victoria Nangle
THINKING ALLOWED Examining comedy that pokes the little grey cells
O
ld comics don’t retire, they just find new adventures. And by ‘old’, I simply mean comics that have been going for a while – comedians do have a bit of a magical ageless quality about them that only lets you have a guess at their years when they start talking about kids and grandkids in their sets. But that’s beside the point. Dom Joly wrote a book about being a tourist in former war zones, Mark Thomas is constantly thinking up new ways to challenge the status quo, Mark Watson did the first 24 hour comedy show, and came up with a comedy concept a few years ago of a hotel filled with different funny ideas. And of course there was the bizarre majesty that produced the Edinburgh Fringe’s ‘The Wrestling’ twice, involving awesome names from comedy such as Brendan Burns, Nick Helm, Gemma Whelan, Pappy’s, Tom Rosenthal and many more – alongside actual wrestlers – with a loose narrative and a magic anarchy from the minds of Max and Ivan. So, when people ask; “Where do your ideas for your set come from?”, the question really should be, “where do they stop?” With this is mind, it’s a great delight to see that Simon Munnery (the comedian Stewart Lee praises most highly) is in town having set himself quite the feat to perform a selection of the 19th Century Danish
Watch Latest entertainment on
existentialist philosopher Soren Kierkegaard's writings, talk about them, and make them funny. And he can do it. Simon Munnery is an innovator, an adventurer in the bizarre, with a remarkable history inspiring so many in comedy with his shows and curiosity. Sometimes he involves music, this time it’s a specific philosopher, he’s been described as an ‘avant garde comedy god’ and ‘the God particle of Alternative Comedy’ – there is no one else like Simon Munnery, and he epitomises the adventuring spirit of the comic on his journey through life asking ‘why’, ‘why not’, and just doing what comes to him with intelligence and good faith. Comedy is more than stag do’s and Saturday night telly – which is not to say that entertaining both of these flitting audiences is not impressive. It’s about engaging and keeping the brain going. It’s quite something for Ken Dodd to remember all of his many hours of gags, but even more of a feat that he keeps writing them. What triggers a gag? The same thing that keeps you young, no matter what age you reach. Simon Munnery Sings Soren Kierkegaard, Wednesday 11 February 2015, 8pm, £12, The Old Market, www.theoldmarket.com

KATE TEMPEST The Mercury Prize nominee spoken word artist/rapper comes to town ...
A
few years back, Speech Debelle came from nowhere to take the Mercury Music Prize. The spoken word rapper/poet from London was signed to Big Dada, offshoot of Ninja Tune, and hopes were high following that win. But, it didn't quite pan out like that, and since then Debelle remains largely unknown. Although the news just in is that she has now completed her new album. I, for one, look forward to that. Fast forward to 2014, and fellow Big Dada artist – also a spoken word rapper/poet – Kate Tempest was nominated for her amazing album Everybody Down.
Big Dada could have been forgiven for having mixed feelings about this; it could be argued that to be nominated is enough, and to actually win may bring unforeseen pressures and unintended consequences. Well, funnily enough, label mates Young Fathers took the honours, and so Tempest has been shielded a little from the spotlight and looks to have plenty of traction to become a truly established artist for the forseeable future. Starting out when she was 16, rapping at strangers on night buses and pestering MCs to let her on the mic at raves – ten years later she is a published playwright, novelist, poet and respected recording artist.
Her work includes Balance, her first album with band Sound of Rum, Everything Speaks In Its Own Way, her first collection of poems, and the critically acclaimed plays Wasted, Glasshouse and Hopelessly Devoted. Brand New Ancients, her self-performed epic poem to a live score, won the Ted Hughes prize in 2013 and the Herald Angel at Edinburgh Fringe. It has sold out tours in the UK and New York and is published by Picador. Her second collection of poetry, Hold Your Own, was published by Picador in October 2014. Her debut novel, The Bricks That Built The Houses, sold in a highly competitive auction to Bloomsbury and will be published later this spring. She has toured extensively, supporting Billy Bragg on his UK tour, as well as supporting Scroobius Pip, Femi Kuti, Saul Williams and John Cooper Clarke. She is also a two-time slam winner at the prestigious Nu-Yorican poetry cafe in New York. Everybody Down was released in May 2014 on Big Dada records. Produced by Dan Carey, aka Mr Dan, it was recorded in an intense two-week period, Kate having spent almost a year previously developing the characters and story. Her highly vivid, urban and literary tales are perfectly complemented by the electronic beats and rhythms of the music. Righteous, turbulent, despairing, tender, honest and truthful; a microcosm of London life in the 21st century. Kate Tempest, Concorde 2, Tues 10 Feb, 7.30pm, £15

NOBLE INTENTIONS ROSS NOBLE – TANGENTLEMAN Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 31 January 2015 ★★★★★
A
As Noble said on the evening, he goes on lots of tangents – the clue is in the show’s title. And this is no bad thing. Like a comedic wedding buffet overflowing with variety and with the enjoyment of dashing from a vegetarian samosa to sausage rolls, the opulence of subject-matter was a gluttony – just don’t expect to always hear the end of any given story. Delivering the pure entertainment of a cat following a torchlight on a wall, it did best not to over-think it and simply enjoy the ride. From owls to new passwords and parkour, Noble is clearly on the best of terms with all of his tangents, and long may this relationship continue.

THE ALTERNATIVE PANTOMIME A Brighton institution – oh, yes it is … Now in its 14th year, the Alternative Pantomime continues to shock, appal and delve to new depths – much to everyone’s delight. Brought to the Studio Theatre stage by Brian Ralfe and a support cast of dames, this year’s edition was loosely based on The Wizard of Oz. But for Kansas, read Manzars, which is by definition a bit of a hole. As you’d expect the show follows Dorothy on her journey along the yellow brick road, albeit with a few twists along the way – particularly when it comes to what the lion, tin man and scarecrow are hoping to find. It’s a rip-roaring show, full of laughs, double-entendres and cabaret of the highest order. A warning though, it’s not for the faint hearted. Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, 30 January 2015 ★★★★★ Tim Ridgway
EMMY THE GREAT Most of the artists who emerged on the British indie-folk scene in the last few years seem to be content with just pumping out the same old twee ditties, but Emmy The Great is breaking the mould. Emmy’s stunning vocals grab your attention in a way few others can manage, and with her fresh, engaging and captivating new style she may finally be on the verge of something truly great. BIG BUSINESS
M
otion Pictures have a unique and powerful ubiquity within human culture. Last year, across the world, there were over 6.8 billion cinema admissions – almost as many as there are people on the planet – which created a global box office revenue of over $30 billion. Film is big business! But its not all blockbusters and big bucks. Cinema is a powerful vehicle for culture, education and leisure. Just attending the cinema has been proven to have a good effect on anxiety and depression. The collective experience of film watching has decisively positive effects on mental health, because visual stimulation can queue a range of emotions, and the collective experience of these emotions through the cinema provides a safe environment in which to experience them. Attending the cinema allows for the employment of personal preference and the human need for distinction – it can be a personally expressive experience, good fun, and therapeutic at the same time. The formation of a film also allows all of the people involved in its creation to artistically express themselves. Films are made to be seen, films need to be seen – they should never be left to languish on a hard drive! Of the over 350 films made in the UK last year, only a quarter achieved theatrical release and an even smaller percentage made it onto our tv screens. If you create films and are looking for an audience, then Latest TV’s FilmFest on 8 is the place for you. With just under four billion viewings of feature films on tv in the UK (22 times as many as the cinema) it’s a great platform for gaining exposure. FilmFest on 8 is a national platform for the large and diverse community of filmmakers here in the UK. Every Sunday night from 9pm I bring you independent films from across the country – from documentaries to dramas, features to shorts, each one is innovative and unique. We are here to give a break to the talented people making films across the UK and we are interested in everything you have to give. Although we are Brighton-based we accept films from all over Britain. Send an email to me via jessica@thelatest.tv with the title, run time and a short synopsis of the film. Add an online link if you can and I will get back to you once we have found a spot in the schedule. I look forward to seeing your work!
