VEGFEST 10 (or more) Great Reasons to go to Brighton Vegfest 2018
H
ere are 10 great reasons to visit VegfestUK Brighton on March 24–25 2018 at the Brighton Centre, courtesy of vegan comedian Adele Cliff, who will be performing at the Vegan Comedy Festival part of the show: • Cooking demos: Brilliant vegan chefs turn up the heat (or don’t turn it on at all if you stumble on a raw demo) and show you the world of wonder beyond the Linda McCartney sausage. • It’s not just for vegans: Nonvegans come and find out all our vegan secrets. Have you ever wanted to steal the salad Susan from HR leaves in the work fridge or push a child off a bicycle? Let us vegans explain how many days you have to drink almond milk to balance your karma after such an act. • Meet the love of your life*: This could be a beautiful likeminded human or, as I found at London Vegfest, it might be a chocolate covered vegan marshmallow on a stick. • A day without responsibilities: Dump unwanted relatives young and old in the Kids Area or Mature Zone and romp off without a care. (VegfestUK cannot accept responsibility for loss of family members)
“ Brilliant vegan chefs turn up the heat ” • Everything is vegan: Go wild without checking the ingredients every 5 minutes. Last time I had curry, stir fry, fakesteak and a cupcake (and a colouring in sheet and some felt tips when I got lost in the Kids Area). • Location, Location, Location: Just the one of them, but Brighton is delightful for a walk, if you want some fresh air whilst you digest the delicious combo of plant proteins you’ve scoffed. • Talent contest: Vegan musicians compete for fame, glory and enough cash to cover their train fare home. Like the X Factor but less morally corrupt. • Stock up on crueltyfree beauty products: Beauty may only be skin deep but in general vegans are less likely than average to cut you open and have a look; so you’re best off keeping your face looking top notch. • Comedy festival: If everything is getting tofuking serious come and have a giggle at awesome comedians including Dave Chawner, Chris Stokes, Cheekykita and me (the hilarious and humble Adele Cliff). • It’s super affordable: You might expect all this excitement to be rather dear but it isn’t at all (deer is a touchy subject, don’t mention venison to a vegan unless you want to miss your bus and the one after it). Tickets on the door are just £10, and it’s even less in advance (you can buy advance tickets at www.brighton.vegfest.co.uk/tickets). *Meat the love of your life: Vegfest is probably not for you. Mini adventures (not that kind!)
In a minute...
T
I
his year I have determined to collect mini adventures. As much as that phrase immediately conjures up images of a small snappy car zipping into the driveway of some stately home spa, or a Bridget Jones style getaway, neither of these things are what I have in mind. What I’d really like to do is paw my way through the undergrowth of events and invitations on offer, like a latter day David Bellamy armed with the Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe brochures, and a bit of initiative. Adventures don’t have to wait until May though. As much as one of my regular learningandgrowingandhavinganicewalk annual events takes place then (when I pick a Brighton historical walk I haven’t been on yet and pin my ears back to take it all in) there’s exploring waiting right now. Last week I had a go at storytelling to an audience for the first time, as a part of one of the International Women’s Day events. Now that was fun and new, and a night out. Lovely people, and raising money for local charity Rise, plus releasing lots of those happy enzymes. Now that the weather is picking up again it might be time to dig out those rambling club details again. One way to get around my impressive lack of direction and yet still get to appreciate the countryside is to join a group that’ll ringfence me on a walk, like a rogue sheep in sheepdog trials. That person wandering off with a good natured look of curiosity on their face to be lost forever on the moors? Yeah, that would so be me if I was born 200 years ago. Routine has its uses, it helps us pay the bills and keep a roof over our heads. But little adventures keep the grey cells sparking and present a world of possibilities. Which is really what the world is all about.

have a problem with getting myself to do things. It’s incredibly frustrating and I think it’s starting to drive me crazy. What’s even more frustrating is that I’m excellent at knowing exactly what I have to do, which makes the fact that I don’t then go and do those things all the more annoying. Say I have to wash my clothes, tidy my room, do my food shop, and meet my friend for dinner. I’ll whack all that into a list in under a minute and I’ll be feeling like an organisational guru, from all over the place to bulletpoint efficiency in the drop of a hat. But then instead of jumping up and diving right in, instead I stupidly trick myself into treating myself for simply writing the list itself. Fast forward two hours and I’ve watched three episodes of Friends, I’ve eaten four slices of toast, and I still haven’t done anything. It wasn’t much of an issue when I was young. I’d be able to crawl out of bed, coast through school on the bare minimum engagement, and then plonk myself on the sofa as soon as I got home and switch from 90 per cent off to a full 100 per cent zoned out. (Perhaps not the most active childhood, but I read a lot so let’s say that balances it out). Now however, its a different story. I’m older now, and I need to start providing for myself and my future. And what’s more, I actually want to do things now. I’m so lucky to be in a position where my studies are my passion, and it’s filling me with ideas and concepts and plans that I want to bring to life. I can’t keep wasting time relaxing when I haven’t done anything to earn my relaxation. It’s starting to become blindingly clear that the only person I’m hurting is myself. One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given is this: “don’t rely on motivation, because motivation is fickle and unreliable. Use the time you look for motivation to develop discipline instead. Discipline is steady and reliable, and won’t disappear whenever you need it.” Guess its time to start learning how to delay gratification.

HIP HOP TO THE TOP Andrew Kay talks exclusively to Brighton boy Liam Francis about his career from dancing with Little Mix to performing with Rambert How long have you been with Rambert? Since 2014. I trained at London Studio Centre from 18 to 21. So did you dance from a young age? I did Hip Hop at my local dance school in Peacehaven from 14. Was there a moment when you thought ‘this is my career’? I saw Into The Hoods, which was a ZooNation production, when I was 14 and I decided I wanted to be a dance superhero. That’s the only way I can explain it, because these guys were like superheroes to me. I joined ZooNation when I was 15, and at 16 I performed in Into The Hoods at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. That’s quite young to be performing in a major London venue. Yeah, it was absolutely wonderful. It was definitely the beginning of me wanting to do this as a career. Then I went to BHASVIC College because I wanted to go to university to be a political journalist. A political journalist? That’s very different from the arts. I know it is... then while I was at BHASVIC I started to work as a commercial dancer performing on the X Factor, so when Joe McElderry won the X Factor I did his UK tour. I performed with groups like LMFAO and JLS. I was like: “this is wonderful, I really enjoy this”, at that point I decided I wanted to be a professional dancer. I took my ALevels then thought I’ll go to dance college instead.
So you had a successful career as a commercial professional dancer. Yes, from when I started at London Studio Centre. I worked as a commercial dancer until I was 21. Then when I was at London Studio Centre I started to experience contemporary dance and I joined INTOTO the contemporary company that I thought was more fitting for me. But I really enjoyed the those moments on TV. Were you the envy of other students. Was it your guilty secret? I didn’t tell them. I was quiet about. I remember performing on X Factor and there was one year that I was performing with Little Mix. The choreographer said, “we need someone to dress up as an ice cream.” I was the youngest so I said “I’ll do it”. So I remember getting dressed up as an ice cream and having these pink neon tights on walking to the X Factor stage and realising that somehow a lot of my school colleagues had tickets. I could see them all slowly pointing ‘that’s Liam dressed up as an ice cream!’. Are you known as Mr Whippy now? Yeah amongst my school friends. That could be taken very wrongly. I’ll edit that out. *laughs* You can leave that in.
Were your family happy about that? My Mum was over the moon, she was like, “Do it!”
Was contemporary dance a more difficult discipline? A different discipline. Different things are important and working as a contemporary dancer helped me develop as an artist. I enjoyed that element of personal development of artistry, character & creativity.
Is she a stage Mum? No she’s definitely not.
Has it given you a voice as a creative person? Yeah, it’s wonderful. I did a show at the Arts Depot in north London

hosting my own evening which was called Liam Francis and Friends and sold all the tickets which is wonderful. Were you performing pieces that you choreographed yourself? The second half of the show was all choreography that I made over the past year and a bit, so there were a few things that I made in New York last summer. There’s a piece I’m working on at the moment in Rambert that I showed. Are Rambert supportive of this? They were so supportive, they did a whole blog, they interviewed me on my inspiration and helped with my crowdfunder. It’s a great privilege and I’m very lucky to have that support and opportunity.
Rambert tour with live musicians, how much difference do you think it makes, does it change the nature of the way you dance? You have to invest all your senses, not only are you listening to each other and feeling each other and sensing each other, you’re then reacting with the group to the music so there’s this kind of secondary sense, you’re part of a different organism that’s responding to another organism. There’s wonderful teamwork and as the music isn’t the same every night, you have to talk to the conductor, you come off stage from a solo but it’s really a duet because you’re dancing with the conductor, and then the orchestra, so the duet becomes a trio – it’s tremendous it does something to your soul. What other arts inspire you? As I develop as choreographer I tend to ignore what inspires me – which doesn’t seem to make sense. Music has always been a massive inspiration, you dance because you love music. Often the music you dance to as a contemporary dancer isn’t music that immediately makes you want to dance, there’s a different relationship. I’ve taken my relationship with hip hop and applied it to the music I have now.
“ Music has always been a
You’re 24, how long do you foresee being able to dance? There comes a point that your mind and will continues to progress but your body says ‘we need to stop’. But I love choreographing, I love bringing different minds together to create something that couldn’t have happened if only one person tried to do it.
massive inspiration – you dance because you love music ”
Contemporary dance as an art form so inclusive, the bringing together of choreographer, designer, lighting, composer, director… And add to those the dancers who donate so much of their creativity, of their material, their ideas to these choreographers. Often we work collaboration, choreographers will set us tasks where they’ll be like ‘we need something like this that portrays this’ then you’ll make something, they’ll give you feedback; you welcome this kind of gifting process where each gift requires a counter gift which is then an initial gift which gets a counter gift. So there’s this tennis idea between choreographers and dancers, which is wonderful because you go out on stage feeling like you have some sort of authorship of what it is you’re performing and not just replicating a set you’ve been shown. This has your part of your soul in it so that’s nice.
So you’re finding joy through music you’re not comfortable with? Less familiar with – but quite interestingly now I put the pressure on myself to choreograph with my response to that music and I need to bring that with me into my creative period and not ignore it. Are there pieces you would like to dance in Rambert’s repertoire? Ghosts Dances was a dream, I remember in my interview in 2014 the first question I asked was, “Is Ghost Dances coming back?” and they said we’re not allowed to tell you, but it did and I was cast as the ghost and it was the most wonderful thing. The tyranny of the changing room
A
few weeks back I was lucky enough to meet and interview Kit Redstone on the show. Kit is a remarkable young man and a theatre maker. We talked about his show Testosterone and his life and we dwelled on the dynamics found in changing rooms. Not changing rooms in clothes retailers, hideous in their very own way, but those that you had to endure at school and for some of you masochists out there in later years at sports centres and gymnasiums. I hated sports at school, inventing innumerable excuses to be excused – so it was a horror that for the most part I managed to avoid.
“ He tells the story with hardly a
glimmer of anger. In fact he tells it with more than a little humour and calm ” Kit, working with Rhum and Clay Theatre Company, has created a play that I was anxious to see. Interviewing him before seeing the show made it in some ways rather difficult – but in many ways much better. I was not bringing to the table my personal response to the work and was able to talk about Kit’s work in a more general sense – ‘work and life’ I should say, Kit was very forthcoming about how he lives and the road he has taken. I’ve seen the play now and I was blown away by it. There’s a
review on our website if you’re interested but it’s not what I want to write about here. Here I want to talk about this from a very different angle. Testosterone is a play about masculinity and how it manifests itself, but in its creation it also became a play about Kit’s transition – oh, did I mention that Kit is a trans man? Well he is and he is wonderfully together about what must be a massive part of his life. Maybe Kit has been lucky, I would not assume that, but what I can say is that he tells the story with hardly a glimmer of anger. In fact he tells it with more than a little humour and calm. It’s quite extraordinary how ordinary he makes it, and perhaps by cushioning it in a world of hilarious machismo he is helping us to see what he has done and the person that he now is, which is rather endearingly ordinary. Now by ‘ordinary’ I really mean that he is just another human living just another life. In doing it in this way, in such a public way and without aggression, he makes a beautiful case for acceptance, for diversity and for equality. Hats of to you Mr Redstone, you are a star.
