y flapjack recipe comes from my grandmother. My cookie recipe comes from Google. I can tell you which one I enjoy making and eating more. Clearly a leading search engine has nothing when in the running against a fondly missed relative.

It used to be that when I ran up against a household quandary the first thing I did was call my Gran. All of Mrs Beaton’s and Delia Smith’s wisdom put together didn’t hold a candle to my grandmother’s nous and experience as far as I was concerned. It was a way of connecting briefly, letting her know that even though I wasn’t near her she was still needed, she was my household (and sometimes emotional) encyclopaedia. If I had a row with my Mum she might even be able to let me know where it was that my dear clever mother had come up with such a ridiculous argument. She was good like that.

These days I call my Mum. There was an overlap where I called them both for a bit, but now it’s just Mum and me, and sometimes stories told that share something of my grandmother.

What I’m trying to say is that nothing beats personal wisdom.

Whether it’s sourced via quick phone call – which also has the added advantage of checking the family headlines of births, deaths and marriages – or via Facebook thread that becomes an archived treasure of how many different ways your friends know to poach an egg without breaking the yolk.

Not only do you get the answer to your question, but also the nuanced connection to the person replying.

Even if it’s just the briefest of chats.

More recently I got a phone call from my godson, asking me what I might know about an author he’s studying at school. He thought it might be good to research her, and so he called me, because I “have lots of books”.

I too feel it’s nice to get the call.

ome of my earliest memories are built around music; my mum dancing in the kitchen to Elvis, singing hymns at school even before I was old enough to contemplate the meaning of the words; iconic early 2000s classics being blasted by my sisters on Top Of The Pops. It seems the majority of my memories right out the gate all revolve around music. So it’s somewhat of a surprise, to myself, more than anyone, that music has taken such a secondary seat in my life in the past few years. Rather than getting stuck into exploring the world of the music as I got older, eventually starting to take joy in the endless multitude of genres and artists, for me the prospect always seemed too daunting, like I was already too far behind to ever catch up with the rest of the world. While the rest of the world discussed current music affairs I’d linger on the peripherals of the conversation, picking up what bits I could while always readily professing that this was not my area of expertise. I’m a writer, I use words, that’s my speciality. I suppose that then I was content with one skill set coming at the cost of another.

But something has changed recently, I think it finally snapped last year when I got tired of excluding myself from a whole world of conversation. I downloaded a music streaming app and since then I haven’t looked back. “Got a recommendation? Let me just see if I can download the album, I’ll listen to it on the walk to the station, or while I’m shopping, or on the bus.” And I do! I listen to them right away, as soon as I can when I’ve got a spare moment, rather than writing them in some list somewhere and never actually getting engrossed.

And my god, I can’t quite believe how naive I’ve been. It’s not about catching up with everyone else, it’s about taking the time to find the sounds you like, the music you resonate with.

I think I’m finally making those discoveries. I’ll let you know if I decide to become a DJ soon.

O

ver the years I have made it my policy not to review restaurant launch parties. On the whole they entail canapés and drinks but are for readers no real indication of a restaurant experience. Sad I know when I get to go to some real humdingers like the recent re­launch of The Ginger Pig, and I hope to bring more of that very soon.

Last week though I did attend a press event to mark the relaunch and re­branding of a venue at Preston Circus. Senor Buddha was a fusion of Spanish and Asian ideas, and it was very good. So good in fact that very soon a second will open, with a new name, but very much built on this strong foundation. The original is now branded Circo, and to celebrate that a group of us had been invited for a sit down dinner, yes not canapés and booze, but the full monty.

“ Chef John Reed has found the exact balance of ingredients ” I say that but in truth we did start with canapés, or as they rightly call them pintos – and very good cava. Stunning brandade in fragile tuilles, divine creamed almonds with truffle and pomelo and cubes of tuna with wasabi. It was a good indication of what was to come.

Once seated I was in for a treat, not only the food but the excellent company of Toby from Enotria wine who had created our drinking menu and very good that was too, and Eshé, better known as Foodie Eshe. I love chatting food with Eshé and it certainly made my evening a feast of fun and fine food.

So to the food itself, and our first dish of tenderstem broccoli with pickled mushrooms, hazelnuts and coconut certainly set they bar high, really exceptional. As was the second dish of pumpkin with a Thai aioli, pack Choi and candied cashews, mmmmmmm clever stuff.

Fish next, and a very finely cooked crispy squid dish on a squid ink Romesco sauce. Now I think squid ink can be good and it can be horrid but the chef, John Reed, had here found the exact balance of ingredients so the dramatic colour did not mask the full Romesco characteristics and the whole was a triumph. Octopus next in a tapioca crisp with cross dear aioli, fennel and sobrassada, a spicy sausage from the Balearics. I could eat this over and over again, octopus might sound scary but I simply love it.

With the fish dishes we drank a great fino sherry, not the stuff your auntie gives you on Christmas morning but a dry and nutty delight that was the perfect match to the squid and octopus.

Embrace sherry in all its forms, even the sweet stuff auntie liked!

On then to the meats. First Iberico pork, a meat that scarily for some is best served rare, but is of course completely safe in that state, and all the better for it. Iberico pork is full flavoured and succulent, not as gamey as wild boar but fuller in flavour than your average piggy. Serving it with a prawn crumb and seaweed was inspired, and a more traditional romesco this time added just the right sweet notes to this intensely savoury combo. Eshé was as impressed as I was too, taking more of her excellent pictures for her blog.

And as if pork was not enough of a meaty interlude, the chef then presented us with some impressive lamb rump topped with lamb bacon, yes you read that right, chard, fennel and a plum sake chutney. Oh how I loved this dish, the juicy meat topped with crisp shards of bacon with the full flavour of the crystalline fat you find on a well cooked lamb chop, and the Monastrel we had been poured was a comforting addition to the whole. As was the plum sake which had already arrived. Sweet sake, which is a beer rather than a wine, was good, very good and I had to hold back from draining the glass before dessert arrived.

Already pretty full, I now had to devour the pud solo as Eshé had left to get the last bus home. Well who am I to refuse? I love a good lemon drizzle but chef’s almond and lemon cake with mascarpone and basil sherbet was a fizzingly good treat, a full punch of vibrant citrus and a powdered herbal sherbet that danced on the tongue together, a foodie tarantella no less.

I left feeling blessed and excited to see this place going from strength to strength, but also excited to find out more about their new venture in the heart of the city.

CHAMPIONS OF MAGIC We spoke to Alex McAleer, Kayla Drescher, Fernando Velasco and double act Young & Strange, the cast of Champions Of Magic, ahead of their forthcoming tour. Here’s what they had to say…

Magic is going through a particular rich vein of global popularity. What would you put that down to?

Alex: I don't think it ever went away but more recently people have remembered that magic is something to experience live. I think people know that what they see on TV or YouTube might not be the whole picture so the more opportunities they have to see it live the better.

Young & Strange: In the past 25 years the success of David Blaine, followed by Dynamo and then the resurgence of David Blaine more recently has helped carve a new interest and fashion for magic. In the 80’s and 90’s it had a reputation as being too cheesy and dated. With the current wave of television talent, magic doing very well on the ‘Got Talent’ shows and magic being perfect for online viral videos, it’s brought magic right back into the 21st century.

Kayla: I credit the current popularity of magic to the amount of quality magic going around the world. By quality, I not only mean strong magic. I also mean a more relatable type of performance. You have magicians, like Derren Brown, who have had these killer tours, popular YouTube videos, and Netflix specials.

Penn & Teller’s Fool Us continues to dominate television while focusing on making each performer be the best representation of magic.

Magicians are notoriously competitive with each other.

How do you manage to all get along so well?

Fernando: We don't get competitive with each other, but instead we work together to make one fantastic show.

Alex: We all have a genuine respect for each other’s acts and what we each bring to the show. Every time we go on tour it's like a group of old

friends or family coming together.

Kayla: We are all such completely different performers with different expertise and different styles.

Because of that, there’s no need to compete with each other. Our main goal is put on a killer magic show each and every time we hit the stage. That can only be done if we support each other.

There’s no need to be competitive when we all have the same goal and need each other to accomplish it.

Young & Strange: Our act is

to say I wanted to be a magician or a shopkeeper. As an adult I suppose I could have become an actor, designer, or cult leader.

Kayla: Not at all! I always loved magic, but I really wanted to work in the green energy field. I worked for a short while understanding Hydrogen Fuel Cell power and hoped to convince college campuses to switch their power source to fuel cell power. I also studied education and would have loved to combine my love of green energy and education to

wanted to be a magician or a shopkeeper ” ALWAYS the audience’s favourite in the Champions of Magic show, so there is no need to be competitive or have any sort of ego.

Compliments should go to the rest of the cast who are great fun to work with and who are also our very good friends.

That really helps in the world of magic which is littered with magicians whose self­belief and importance outstrips their talent.

Can you share some memorable moments with us?

Kayla: On stage, there was one show where, as we all walk out for the final bow, we see Sam Strange trip on some confetti and completely face­ plant. He sprung up like nothing happened, fixed his tie, and joined the bow. It was hard to laugh right then as we’re in the middle of the show.

Have you always wanted to be magicians? Any other careers you may have chosen?

Alex: When I was five I used

help save the world. But once I had a real­life job, I immediately knew I had to perform.

Young & Strange: We have had a passion for it since childhood and our friendship helped to inspire us towards making it our profession.

Young’s dream job was working in the bakery section of a supermarket and he was subsequently sacked for overfilling the jam in the donuts. Magic always had a draw to it and we are fortunate enough to make a living from it. It won’t be long before that bubble bursts though and we are back to filling jam donuts….

What was the first trick you mastered and who did you impress?

Alex: Probably the first piece of mind reading I ever learnt was a skill known as 'muscle reading' ­ I had a friend hide an object somewhere in the house and then asked them to think about its location until I found it. Took me about two

minutes. It's a bit like a game of 'hot or cold' but they only think about where it is, saying nothing aloud.

Young & Strange: The very first trick we learnt together as an act is an illusion that is still in the show today. It uses a cardboard box, in which one of us sits, and 23 wooden stakes which are rammed into the box at speed. We still make changes to the illusion 10 years on, so it’s unlikely we will ever consider the trick to be ‘mastered’. The very first time we performed it, we are adamant that the only people impressed by the illusion was ourselves….

Kayla: The first trick I really learned and did for a while was the cut and restored rope trick. This first made it’s appearance in my second grade school talent show, where my Dad and I wrote a “comedy” act together. I must say, the jokes still hold up! I still do some rope magic in my full show, today!

Champions Of Magic is a pretty full­on show. Have you had any personal disasters on stage?

Young & Strange: Our role within the show is to provide the spectacle and bombastic finish. We always say what we lack in talent is masked by production. That production includes the use of pyrotechnics and we have had a couple of near misses through our own stupidity. We have had two incidences where the theatre has been evacuated during the performance due to the pyrotechnics.

Out with a big WOW in Worthing this spring

A

fter our recent award of Heritage Lottery Funding for a new LGBTIQ+ project here at Latest CIC in Brighton & Hove, it is great to see that over at Worthing WOW they have also received funding for events related to Oscar Wilde and the LGBT community in Worthing. Wilde famously ran away to Worthing at one point in his extraordinary life so it seems absolutely appropriate that they have also received Arts Council England funding too.

Worthing WOW is a spoken word festival which, after a break in 2017, is storming back with a festival for 2018 that Oscar Wilde would have been proud of and Worthing

inspiration.

The first WOW festival ran in 2014 and was followed in 2015 by the Jane Austen’s Worthing exhibition, both to great Organiser Melody Bridges acclaim and with Paul Burston bringing thousands of visitors to the area. The 2016 festival – focussing on 120 years of film in Sussex – was the biggest festival so far with an audience of over 10,000 people.

REVIEW Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra

T

he BPO’s final concert of the season was a generous and convivial affair, opening with a Malcolm Arnold brass fanfare before delving into a more nuanced, emotional work with Sibelius’ Karelia Suite, which featured some beautiful melancholic clarinet playing in the second movement.

Malcolm Arnold’s Piano Concerto was initially written for two pianos, but the jovial Worbey & Farrell have arranged it for four hands on one piano: resulting in a jaunty and occasionally strange piece, perfect for the jaunty double act themselves. Delibes’ Coppelia Suite is a piece close to Barry Wordsworth’s heart – it was an early conducting charter for him – and the tumultuous tone and pace certainly reflected the vigour of youth.

Saint­Saëns’s Carnival of the Animals was both a musical and farcical treat, with a wandering clarinet, humorous introductions from the returning Worbey & Farrell, and some lyrical piano playing amidst the bonhomie to remind one of the pair’s musical ability.

A jubilant encore featuring a rousing rendition of ‘Tequila’ and a bum piano note of a non­fluffed kind ended the BPO season on a high note.

ajor excitement this month for the team here as our bid for a Heritage Lottery Fund grant was successful. For some time now some I have been working with my colleagues to prepare a bid that will allow us to gather together and curate our large collection of print, image and video footage that in so many ways charts the history of Brighton and Hove’s LGBTIQ+ heritage.

Latest 7 and our predecessor The Punter always carried news stories from the gay community. We felt that as a local media organ it was right to do so, offering opportunities for all sectors to find information about what was happening in the gay world. It worked and we now have an archive of fascinating material.

“ A vibrant visualisation of the gay

culture in our city that has made Brighton & Hove the gay capital of the UK ” With our funding we are creating Live & Let Live, a project that will embrace a range of aims and activities. Our archive is being digitised and the resulting archive will be fully searchable and accessible by all. That archive will also be the core element of a new digital exhibition, a vibrant visualisation of the gay culture in the city going back in time, charting the major cultural changes, politics and events that have made this city the gay capital of the UK.

To do this we will be asking people to join us in making this as good and all embracing as it can possibly be, and in a few weeks time people will be invited to join in, and in many many ways.

Live & Let Live will offer education opportunities for people of all ages, and not just from the LGBTIQ community but from anyone who is interested – equality for us means that we do not operate in isolation but engage the whole city.

We will be looking for people to be interviewed for aural histories, people who have expert knowledge of our heritage and people who have archival material that we can include in our final outcomes. Not that anything about this project will be final, after all, history starts today. We see this as an ongoing concept that will become a hub for Brighton and Hove’s gay heritage.
