Monster crunch
Tequila “The health spirit”
T
he other night I literally heard a thing go bump in the night. It was even under my bed. Clearly I’ve waited until the most embarrassing point in my life to discover monsters under my sleeping apparatus. Yeah, I’m a bit of a clot. After waking up a bit more to consider investigating with a clear head (I didn’t shift myself though, it’s easier to dismiss imaginary monsters without moving than it is to find a comfortable position ready for sleep again) I remembered why I might’ve heard such a thing. I have a crap sense of aural direction. And I’d thrown a pillow to the other side of the room five minutes before, where it had been perched precariously waiting to fall. How to spook yourself 101. It’s not the first time I’ve done something ridiculous because my hearing’s sense of direction has gone askew. When I was a student and we had a landline (bygone times, I know) I got up in the middle of a flatshare teambuilding filmwatching session to walk next door and pick up the phone. That wasn’t ringing next door. It was ringing on the television in the film in the room we were in. I’d gotten aurally confused. We had to pause the DVD because my flatmates couldn’t stop laughing at me for long enough to follow the plot. Along the way other smaller examples have reminded me that my ears work in their own special way. I’ll hear someone shout from a crowd “I’m over here!”, and I’ll reply “over where? Describe it!”. It makes me more aware of everything going on rather than focussing on a single direction. I’ve chosen to see this quirk of mine as a source of adventures and an opportunity to take in more of the world. It’s a positive. Creating jolly monsters under my bed well into adulthood.

equila has long been associated with that special kind of dizzy amnesia that leaves you piecing together a night out like a seasoned detective but in a strange twist of fate, it is now best known for its numerous health benefits. My last column was about staying healthy and enjoying a few drinks and invariably I read a lot about this Mexican super drink, so considering all the hype I wanted to delve a little deeper and find out if we are giving too much credence to these health claims. There is information to support the idea that tequila is a healthier spirit than most, notably the fact that the human digestive system does not break down the main sugars in tequila (agavins). Meaning that instead of digesting the sugars in the drink they pass through our systems with relatively no adverse effects. Beyond this though there is a lot of very sketchy “information” including the notion that tequila can help prevent osteoporosis or even dementia. I am in fact sad to say that I was duped by a similar story. In my last column I proudly stated that “tequila is probiotic” but after some more intense research, this is simply not true. The plant that tequila is made from has probiotic properties, but they are lost in the distillation process. For example, the article ‘Tequila is good for your bones, Science says’ in The Independent explains that the fructans in tequila have been proven to help bone strength in mice. However, a separate report notes that these fructans are once again lost in the process used to make tequila. To summarise sensationalist headlines about the benefits of our favourite foods and drinks are of course nothing new, it seems every month a new study has proven chocolate helps prevent strokes or wine treats insomnia. However, what I have learnt is that you need to look at the initial study and if something quotes simply “science” as a source, be wary. LATEST 7/HOMES

CRAZY FOR YOU

Y
ou can’t beat some glorious Gershwin, and the composer has no greater fan than Tom Chambers who is fulfilling a teenage dream by starring in the musical Crazy For You. In a career which has featured a number of crazy twists of fate as well as some fantastic roles, Tom is relishing the chance to recapture his teenage dream and this time play the lead role in the production of Crazy For You, which is touring the UK and calling at Theatre Royal Brighton from Tuesday 29 May – Saturday 2 June.
Tuesday 29 May – Saturday 2 June Tue – Fri 7.45pm Sat 8pm Wed, Thu & Sat mats 2.30pm 0844 871 7650* atgtickets.com/brighton* *Booking fees apply. Calls cost up to 7p per minute, plus your phone company’s access charge NB: Tom Chambers will not be performing at the Friday evening or Saturday matinee performances
“ I think Crazy For You has the
absolutely perfect balance of humour, story and singing ”
Tom’s big break onto the TV screen came when he landed the role of a fiercely driven doctor in Casualty. It was this role that led him into Strictly Come Dancing, where he partnered Camilla Dallerup winning the coveted glitterball. Now it is Crazy For You which is set to take up the rest of his year. He said: “I think Crazy For You has the absolutely perfect balance of humour, story and singing. It is a bit like the show dance on Strictly, with everything slotting into place in the right order”. As a big fan of the music of Gershwin, Tom is in heaven, getting to perform such hits as ‘I’ve Got Rhythm’, ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me’ and ‘Embraceable You’. “After seeing Crazy For You as a teenager, I went and bought the original score. I used to have a weekly singing lesson at school and it would be my favourite lesson of the week. When I was at drama school, they used to say ‘will you stop singing Gershwin?’ I love Cole Porter as well but Gershwin has that sex appeal and more style, more jazz and a bit more pizazz”. So this is very definitely a dream role for him. In the words of his musical idol and another hit song from the show, Nice Work If You Can Get It! LATEST 7 | 5

NICK HEYWARD After riding high in the charts in the 1980s, both as a solo artists and as frontman for hitmakers Haircut 100, has continued songwriting and is back in the charts with his new album Woodland Echoes. He speaks with Victoria Nangle about writing, recording, and the old days. Hi Nick, how is your day going? It’s good, thanks. I was up early and slept well, which is an absolute delight. I heard your set at this year's Great Escape and you captivated the room. How do you feel about a return to touring and live performances after chiefly concentrating on recording? I feel better and better about it the more I do it and I’m more prepared for it nowadays. It’s taken a lot of work – self hypnosis helps me reach my full potential on stage and not beat myself up about it if I don’t. It really is about doing my best at the time. I used to have a voice that criticised me as I was singing. That voice has been removed from my mind and the building and the country and the world and the universe. It’s gone for good. What made you decide to tour this album, after releasing two albums without the live accompaniment? I wanted to do things properly and make it more enjoyable. I have a great band and I love working with them. They are: Andy Treacey, drums; Ryan Robinson, guitar; Anthony Clark, keyboards; Phil Taylor, bass; Rob Digweed, sax. And also being on tour with my son who is doing the sound. And my partner, Sara, who helps run Gladsome Hawk. All in all, it’s a lovely bunch of people and an absolute joy to work with everyone. And why decide to start the tour in Brighton? I can’t take credit for that one. You’d have ask my agent. But I’m glad it is Brighton. The tracks felt so articulate, moving, and embracing. Was there a place or location you had in mind when you were writing Woodland Echoes?
Thank you. I didn’t have anywhere in mind so much, as I was writing and recording in the locations. It was mostly in spare rooms I was renting. So, the opening track ‘Love is the Key by the Sea’ for instance was written in the summer at the furthest point from the sea in a village called Stoke
Congratulations on Woodland Echoes entering the independent charts at number 4. With critical and commercial success over the year, whose acclaim is important to you and why? All the acclaim that I’ve got for this album is important. So, when people hear the album
“ Selfhypnosis helps me reach my full
potential on stage and not beat myself up about it if I don’t ” Row. So, the landscape seeped into the music, especially when I had the window open when it literally did in the case of ‘Beautiful Morning’ which captured the early dawn chorus of a beautiful summer’s day. You mentioned at the time that the album had a journey flow through its track listings. What is the most significant change over the years that has moved you from writing singles to albums as standalone? I’ve always written albums and there’s been singles from them. I must say the only time I got stuck was trying to write singles was when I was recording From Monday to Sunday, and that’s where ‘Kite’ came from. It was the frustration of trying to write a single. When I stopped trying ‘Kite’ appeared and was picked as a single. My idea of a single probably isn’t a single, but my single picks on Woodland Echoes are ‘Who?’, ‘Love is the Key by the Sea’, ‘I Can See Her’, and ‘The Stars’. None of which have been single… yet. I’d like to release all the songs as singles because I feel all the songs reached their full potential, even the instrumental.
and they’re affected by it and are brave enough to share that with me on social media. That’s something that’s not been there in the music world, so there’s more appreciation going around these days, which keeps the independent artist alive and kicking. I’m sure it’s inspiring lots of people out there. The more encouragement the better. At The Great Escape there were requests for 'Blue Hat For A Blue Day' and 'Favourite Shirts' – the second of which you kindly played. What is your relationship with your own back catalogue? I feel I have a healthy relationship with my back catalogue. We’ve been through times when we’ve needed space. But now they are good old friends to hang out with and I
enjoy their company immensely. Do you have a favourite track you like to play for yourself? ‘Fantastic Day’ because it’s what I learned to play and sing on in my bedroom. So, I have great affection for it, it’s like going right back to the beginning. It’s the lavender pod I trod on in the punk days. In 40 years' time, what would you most like to be remembered for? Professionally, for my songs to be remembered more than I am. And personally, as somebody who didn’t want anything from anyone. Nick Hayward, Concorde2, Thursday 24 May, 7.30pm, £22.50

Marking NVT’s 70th anniversary, and 1984

t is the 70th anniversary of the New Venture Theatre. Worth taking a beat and considering the enduring community and profesional spirit that has led the NVT to consistently put on interesting and groundbreaking shows, from Hedwig & The Angry Inch to Hedda Galber, offering opportunities to emerging new playwrights – in its groundbreaking Short Play Festival – and supporting new actors with roles (and classes)
In George Orwell's 1984, people live under ignorant oppression in Oceania a country caught in a perpetual war. This is a place where the Party scrutinizes human actions with the everwatchful eye of Big Brother. Defying a ban on individuality, Winston Smith a records clerk at the Department of the Ministry of Truth, his job is to rewrite historical documents according to the Party's demands, dares to express his

thoughts in a diary. His hatred of Big Brother, the Party and the Thought Police manifests itself when he decides to risk everything in a search for the real truth and pursue a heart thumping clandestine relationship with the
mysterious girl with the dark hair, Julia. These criminal deeds bring Winston to the attention of an Inner Party member named O'Brien who may be involved with an underground resistance group called the Brotherhood. In Matthew Dunster's arresting adaptation of this hugelyinfluential mid twentieth century political novel we rediscover a seminal dystopian fantasy that indicates just how ubiquitous Orwell's predictions have become, from the Lottery to CCTV cameras and the denuded lexicon of text messaging (Newspeak under a different name). There is cold realization of how dangerous it is to be a citizen in a totalitarian state. 1984, 11 – 20 May, 7.45pm, Sun 13, 2.30pm (no evening show), 01273 808353, www.newventure.org.uk www.brightonfringe.org

he acclaimed circus theatre troupe Ockham’s Razor’s latest show was an intriguing blend of traditional circus and contemporary dance. Performed in the round, an imposing construct of high metal beams tenting above the stage hosted talented acrobats manipulating metal poles in dazzling ways. Delicately dancing atop the flimsiest of towers one minute, the next swinging rapidly in a makeshift trapeze before hurtling to inches above the ground, Tipping Point’s preoccupation was the moment in which one thing becomes another. Celebrating the delicate balance achieved by individual elements to maintain the whole, this was a spectacular evening from these masters of their craft. Sexism
I
’m working this week with a bunch of very bright young people from Salzburg. They’re here to learn English, although they are already shamefully fluent, and I am talking to them about magazines. It’s great fun and I love reading what they are writing, so many very different views from a country not so far away but soon to be distanced by the lunacy that is Brexit. One of the students has written a review of her favourite novel, Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. It’s a book that I too love, but I was shaken awake by her noting the awful sexism within the story.
“ We are so aware of sexism now
that there really is little excuse – surely we rarely encounter it? ”
It’s years since I read it, probably 45, so my memory of the book is shrouded in the mists of time – but so is how we perceive sexism. At the time of writing I suspect that for the great many sexism was not an issue. At my time of reading sexism was definitely becoming an important issue, feminism was finally on the rise and being taken seriously, quite rightly so. So what do you say to someone who is struggling with sexism in classic period fiction? Of course it was happening and of course

it was wrong. Was Hemingway interested, was it a key thread to his story, was he trying to highlight the social injustice of sexism? I suspect not, or at least not consciously. We are so aware of sexism now that there really is little excuse – surely we rarely encounter it? Well sadly we do. A friend recently told me about a night she spent out clubbing with friends, the sort of night I hasten to add that I no longer can endure. By 5am she was tiring and waiting for her friends to leave the club and go home. They were still happy on the dance floor so she waited patiently and whilst doing so a young guy approached here and ‘hit on her’, as I believe the young people say. He was rather insistent that she should go home with him. She was not in the least interested in him – especially as she is gay. She expressed her disinterest and eventually, somewhat in despair and to some extent anger, told him that she was a lesbian. I really don’t think that any of us in such a situation should have to use our sexuality as a reason for not being interested in going to bed, for this was clearly his prime motivation – this was no excuse for her to decline the offer. But what came next was even more remarkable. His response so bizarre that one might be forgiven for thinking that this was an alien. What did he say? “So you won’t come home with me because I am a man? Well that’s sexist!” It defies belief really that anyone in 2018 can be so bloody wrong minded.
