ext week sees the start of the Brighton Fringe and the Brighton Festival, in case you managed to miss the announcements. My social media feed has moved on from being peppered with shows and events to a marvellous chilli festival of plays, standup comedy, circus, dance – as well as those intriguing ideas that never fall into any category and are so much the richer for it. The Latest Musicbar is buzzing in anticipation of not only the Brighton Fringe shows taking place here, but also that weekend musical extravaganza that is The Great Escape that encompasses us too. This is what has historically been known as my “eyes bigger than tum” time – when I plan my month of May meticulously, filling every corner with an experience, a show or a walking tour. And then have to find extra corners in the month for the extra sleep I need after such stimulating times. And every year I vow to do less so that I can enjoy what I do see more. Savour the shows, respect the performers’ uniquenesses, and have a little space to be spontaneous and see something new because I have the time and the curiosity. This year I’ve added another component to try and obtain the Best May Ever™: Ear To The Ground. As I mentioned, social media is filling up with news of great shows, and I thought it would be a good idea to see if I could use it to feed me information on where the latest buzz is buzzing – as it buzzes. Ambitious, I know. One of the best shows I saw last year was an added extra after the success of its initial run (Alice Marshall, since your asking). With the world taking to Twitter and Facebook to recommend acts, why not listen? And I’ll pass on my recommendations too. (Twitter handle at the top FYI). Let’s all try for the Best May Ever™.

hree years ago this August I got a phone call that ended in me being offered at place at university. My grades were far from good enough, but it was through the grace of the clearing system that I was given the chance to carry on studying. The moment I said yes I was swept up into a whirlwind that hasn’t stopped spinning. Until now. In two weeks I hand in the last assignment of my third and final year of university; even writing that now I can barely believe it’s true. When I started university I had a lot to prove. I’d spent my entire academic life coasting, doing just enough to get by, and all throughout secondary school it had worked. Then college came along like a painfully rude awakening and I found myself desperately floundering. I couldn’t coast anymore because the difficulty level had just shot through the roof, but I didn’t know how to buckle down and discipline myself to do the proper work and revision because I’d never really had to do that before. All this was a recipe for disaster and for the two years of college I was locked into a cycle made up of fear of failure, selfloathing for not fulfilling potential and academic disillusionment. Then, when the offer to study at university came along it was like a deus ex machina, and I seized the opportunity for a chance to start over and learn from my mistakes. It brings me great happiness to be able to say that’s exactly what I did. I went to university never having done a proper day’s work in my life, but I worked through my fears and problems and I shattered my own expectations. I did well, and what’s more, I enjoyed it! The academia, the studying, the environment of learning, it all rang differently at university level, and I felt myself connecting with it for the first time in my life. And now here I am at the other end, 21 years old and genuinely so sad to see it all go. But more than anything I’m happy, happy that I could prove my 18yearold self wrong. LATEST 7/HOMES

ROB KEMP Rob Kemp’s show Elvis Dead was the breakout underground success of last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, gathering a nomination for Best Newcomer in the Edinburgh Awards, winning accolades and rave reviews, celebrity fans and more. He speaks with Victoria Nangle about it all. What first drew you to the idea of merging Elvis with The Evil Dead? I have a longstanding love of both things thanks to my dad, but the kernel of the idea arose after watching another Bruce Campbell film, Bubba HoTep. This led to a chat with some comedy mates where one of them commented that I bore a resemblance to Bruce. After that, it made all the sense in the world. Does an audience have to be familiar with The Evil Dead series to appreciate the show? I don’t think so. In fact, some folks have told me that despite a dislike of horror AND the King, they thoroughly enjoyed it, against all odds. Saying that, there are things that the unfamiliar might miss. There's a meta element to The Elvis Dead, with your asides to the audience. Who or what inspires you when you put together your stage personas? I recognise that it’s all a bit absurd, and the fourth wall abuse is in there to assure the audience that I know so, and we’re all in it together. A number of those moments grew organically from performing the show. They’re the bit of me that I can sneak in without ruining the flow. There’s probably something of the Bottom Live Shows at work too. I dunno, I'm sorry, I haven’t really stopped to think of where, who, what, or why. You really throw yourself into the show physically – do you need to factor in 'recovery time' between shows to keep your voice and let the bruises recover? You’d think so, wouldn’t you. Turns out, I’m not that smart. I’m not sure I’d have made it so physical had I realised I was going to be doing it so

frequently, or that I’d end up with purple hips and misshapen elbows. The bruises (and I’m not trying to sound like a hero here) I just tend to struggle on with. Everyone deserves the same commitment to the performance, right? I may regret that in a year or two.

How did it feel when you realised you had famous fans of the show? Very satisfying, but oh so strange. It was very odd, looking out on the audience and recognising faces – to the point where I forgot my words a time or two in shock. You can’t help but secondguess their expressions. One

“ I’m not sure I’d have made it so

physical had I realised I was going to be doing it so frequently... ” I was starting to struggle voicewise at a few points last Edinburgh, so I had to limit my speaking, alcohol consumption, and worst of all, tea.

comedian who came, didn’t (to my eyes) appear to be enjoying it on the night, but then sent me a message the next day saying how engrossed he had been.

The Elvis Dead has been described as a oneman Rocky Horror Show. Would you ever consider licensing it out to other performers to play up and down the country, whilst you continued writing and hosting the occasional episode of The Crystal Maze? Eventually, if there’s a call for it. I’ve got to make sure I’m the definitive Elvis Dead guy first though. I don’t want to be usurped by a better singer/actor/comedian! I am certain that my body won’t put up with the abuse for too long, so maybe in 20 years! Being conservatively optimistic. I have started learning the harmonica for the last bit, just in case.

Have you heard any response to the show from Bruce Campbell or the Elvis camp? Not so far. I understand some people have tweeted him (Bruce Campbell) – which is good, cos it seems a bit desperate to tweet him myself. Nothing from the Elvis estate either. The producer of Evil Dead: The Musical got in touch, with a ‘cease and desist’ order. No, he was really nice, offering help should I need it.

How has the incredible success of the show changed your life? Probably only in a change in my belief that I can maybe actually make comedy my life.

What are your future plans with The Elvis Dead show? Vegas, baby! I’ll happily take it as far as it will go, maybe with bigger production values (where appropriate for a Bmovie homage). A soundtrack album would be fun, if there was enough call for it, and if the rights could be sorted out. Doing it with a live band, my own TCB, no! TCD! (Taking Care of Deadites, of course) would be amazing.

And what wild whim would you like to follow next, if money was no object and time never a factor? I had the idea for a puppet show version of all of the Toho Godzilla movies, and if money was no object, they’d be full size puppets, with the audience members’ faces digitally mapped onto the extras faces in realtime! The other one was CSI: Jaws, with a shark investigator looking into the murder of an innocent shark in Amity. Or maybe I’ll just tell some jokes. Who knows? Rob Kemp: Elvis Dead, Komedia, Monday 7 & Monday 28 May, 8.30pm, £12/10

nother season of the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival has drawn to a close and not without change. This year the festival has pulled away from previous formats to focus on a new thrust. The festival has always been about promoting local gastronomic talent and local producers with the aim of making the city and Sussex at large THE place to visit for food tourism – and for whatever reasons that aim has certainly been achieved. The city is now one of the most exciting places on the culinary map with a vast number of food choices at every level from affordable to fine, very fine indeed. Withdrawing from large, and very expensive events on Hove Lawns we have been able to concentrate on new goals, take the best of our existing events and introduce new concepts. This time Sussex Wine Week has proved to be a popular event with a wine and tapas trail, a variety of wine lead dinners with participating businesses, and a one day wine and gin festival attracting great crowds of serious food lovers. And not forgetting Make Your Case, which in a new venue at La Cave à Fromage was as much fun as ever. For me the highlight of the whole series has been the rethinking of one of our most popular events: Food Lab, this time focusing on younger chefs as FoodLab: Emerging Talent. Hosted by Steven Edwards at Etch, it was a sell out success. Taking the existing format of chefs being randomly matched to local producers, we invited our young chef of the year George Boarer to help curate the new event by inviting young chefs from across the city. The result was a fabulous meal, inventive thinking and dishes that had the senior chefs attending almost quaking at the emerging talent’s skills and ideas.

Taking part were: George Boarer from Etch with Wobblegate apple juice and Eden Cider Eliot Buchet from Jeremys Restaurant with Bedlam Brewery Isobel Humbey from the Salt Room with Red Roaster Jackson Heron from Murmur with Trenchmore Farm Michael Norman Watts from 64 Degrees with Blackdown Artisan Spirits George Thomas from Isaac@ from with La Cave à Fromage Sam Watson from The Ginger Fox with Ridgeview

National Theatre of Scotland’s powerful story of one trans man’s incredible ife

A

dam is National Theatre of Scotland’s remarkable production about one trans man’s powerful true story – and the winner of a clutch of awards. We caught up with Director Cora Bissett to find out more about the incredible true story behind the show. “Adam is the reallife story of a young man named Adam, who was born biologically female in Egypt but who, from a young age, knew himself to be male. In a society that is deeply conservative, he knew that it wouldn’t be safe for him to live as himself there, so he escapes. “The play charts his journey from Egypt to Glasgow, the struggles he goes through to be accepted as the man he knows himself to be. Adam himself stars in the show, alongside the excellent Rehanna MacDonald, each portraying the two sides to Adam’s psyche. It also features

a 120 strong digital choir made up of trans and non binary people from all over the world, singing a beautiful score by the worldrenowned composer Jocelyn Pook.

“ Born biologically female but who, from a young age, knew himself to be male ”

“I think people are genuinely becoming more curious about trans experiences; they may not necessarily understand the difference between transvestite and transgender, nonbinary, third sex, androgyny and the myriad of ways in which people are formed, and are really eager to learn about these things. I hope Adam's story really helps

in the evolution of understanding. “I first met Adam after seeing him perform a very short monologue about his life back in 2013, as part of a Scottish Refugee Council event called Here We Stay at Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre. I was incredibly moved by his story, his honesty and his strength, so I approached him straight afterwards and asked if he would like to meet me to tell me more, as I had a strong sense that I would like to turn his story into a full production. We began working with the brilliant writer Frances Poet to spend time understanding Adam's story, and then adapting it in a fittingly exciting way. Five years later here we are! “Despite great progress being made on gay rights, it seems as though we are still eons away from really understanding and granting the same level of understanding to trans and nonbinary individuals. I think a lot of people feel they can't ask the questions, they don't want to appear ignorant, but actually opening up dialogue is urgently necessary. Gender clinics around the world have seen a marked rise in young people presenting as trans individuals. “I think the groundswell of documentary coverage is helping to open that up, but this is just the beginning. Theatre can speak directly, you can actually see that human being on stage; not an oddity, not some exoticised character in a reality TV sensation. A normal human being who was just born with a different brain and soul from the gender they were assigned

at birth. Even that idea is a little mind blowing if no one has presented it to you before. “When the show opened at the Edinburgh Fringe last year we were all overwhelmed by the responses we had from our audiences. All kinds of different people, young and old, from all over the world, came along and found something beautiful in Adam’s story, because it’s one that is both personal and universal. “I had aunts and uncles in their 80s whom I wasn't sure would connect with it, but they were blown away. They said they had really learnt something new. Adam received emails from people who had come from Spain, Germany, all over, and would gush 'this is MY story too!' I was delighted to see a huge turn out of young people, who told me they really identified with the feelings of isolation Adam experienced, and also a large amount of trans and non binary individuals came to the show. I hope that trans and nonbinary people watching feel that it is their story too, since it is not a documentary style exposé of Adam's life. We were all very clear it is Adam’s journey, but it is also reflective of thousands of trans people's struggles in the world. I hope they can watch it and feel strengthened & represented. “What’s going to surprise people about this show is the fact that Adam actually plays himself alongside an actress. I was amazed how many people came out and only then discovered 'Oh wow, that was THE ACTUAL GUY!” Adam, Brighton Theatre Royal, 912 May, brightonfestival.org 01273 709709

From sexism to ageism

L

ast week I talked about sexism, a broad topic in almost every sense as we see it in every aspect of life, and I would say not only between genders but within. Sexism takes no sides, it is insidious and rampant still, which given that this is 2018 is pretty scary. This week I want to go back to another vile force that is at work in the world and that is ageism. I know that some of you will laugh and suspect that I am concerned about this now I am in my sixties, and maybe that does inform my views. As a man of a certain age I become increasingly aware of ageism almost every day, and in particular when I see friends who are becoming less confident, less firm and less able. It’s happening to us all, there is no cure for the inevitable onset and the havoc that ageing rages on the human body.

“ All in the hope of being that

eternal youth, the Peter Pansy ” I know I could have taken better care, exercised more, eaten less fat and drunk less booze, but to be honest my diet is pretty good and I do not drink much these days, preferring one good glass of wine to a bottle of plonk. The ravages of time are indiscriminate, my father was a fitness fiend with a strict regimen

of exercise and a good diet, but he was seen off by heart conditions and chronic arthritis. A cruel fate to be sure. In the LGBT world the cult of youth is still rife, the pressure of having that ultrafit body, glowing tan (real or fake), lush hair, perfect teeth… it’s all tyrannical, a force coming from a world committed to selling you stuff, from hair gel to, at the darker end of the scale, illegal drugs. And all in the hope of being that eternal youth, the Peter Pansy. Does it make you happy, does the world look at the older man or woman working so hard to retain that youthful look and say “wow!”. Or do we look at them and think, “Oh dear, that looks rather odd, forced, unnatural”. I suspect that it’s the latter, and not just because I have embraced my thickening waist and thinning pure white hair. I’m not really worried about how I look – yes you’re right, I do like to dress somewhat flamboyantly, as I say, once an art student always an art student. The cult of youth, do I hate it? No of course not, I love the energy of youth – but I also love that here in Brighton & Hove we have a thriving community of older gay men and women who so actively keep this city as vibrant as it is. Their experience and energy, their culture and history are massively important – and their society is an essential part of who we all are, were and will be. Respect is the simple answer to ageism, in every walk of life.
