t’s Brighton Fringe and Brighton Festival time! Time to head into May with our heads down and brochures in hand, fully prepped for the Artists Open House trails and Great Escape bonanza too, as well as various other colourful and shiny mini festivals, heading out into the big wide Brighton world with the entertaining city as our oyster. With this in mind, I’d like to offer a few tips for the month ahead. First off the bat, prepare. Yes, I know you’ve pored over brochures, websites and recommendations, but have you looked out of the window? May is a remarkable month in that usually we go into it muttering that British winters never seem to end and asking if anyone thinks the oldfashioned galosh will ever make a comeback as a fashion item. Cue to a whirling dervish of activity through the month, then blinking and asking how long the sun has been in town and if he might turn it down a tad. April Showers have no respect for the demarkations of the calendar, and neither do June sun spots. Pack for every kind of weather – you may be out all day. Take layers, take a lightweight umbrella, and take plasters in case the shoes that are fine for walking to work in are not up to the task of all day revelry. Secondly, invest in a water bottle. One that’s easy slip into your small rucksack. Invest in a small rucksack. With a canvas bag scrunched up inside of it in case you need to grab an impromptu family picnic for the beach. Making sure you don’t dehydrate and have the things that help you be flexible with your plans is invaluable. And thirdly, pop a powered power pack into that small rucksack. Keeping a charged phone at all times means you hear about the latest mustsee shows in time to pick up the very last ticket. Enjoy! And may the queues be forever in your favour.

n last week’s column I spoke about coming to the end of my time at university. This week I’m looking back on my time at Latest as this will be my last column with Latest magazine. It all feels cyclical in the most beautiful way. I started writing for Latest when I was 20. How does that feel like yesterday and a million years ago at the same time? The first time they offered me the position I thought they were joking. They were asking if I wanted to write a weekly column in a magazine. The idea of being trusted with such a responsibility was incomprehensible to me at the time. Who was I, a 20 year old, to talk about life? Nearly two years later I want to express my gratitude for that initial belief because it went on to give me such an incredibly validating experience. I am so grateful to Latest for trusting and supporting my voice, believing that I had something worthwhile to say, and allowing me a place on their pages. As a young writer, being given such a role was like being handed the Holy Grail. I was a year into an english and creative writing degree and I could already ‘technically’ call myself a professional writer, even if I might have had to get a second job to keep the fridge full — although that’s pretty standard for writers, right? Having the obligation to write something every week was a blessing in disguise that I’ve been able to appreciate more and more as time has gone on. The self discipline it’s built in me will be something I take forward into every aspect of my life. So much has happened in the time I’ve been with Latest, and I feel a reconnection as I write this to the person I was when wrote my first ever column. I remember it was cold and dark outside, as it was just turning to winter. Now, as I write my final column its light and warm outdoors, and summer is just arriving; I think that's a beautifully fitting pathetic fallacy. Thank you Latest for allowing me to take my first steps into the writer’s world, I can’t wait to carry on exploring. LATEST 7/HOMES

SUMMER OF Worthing Theatres celebrate the 250 year anniversary of circus with a groundbreaking world premiere to open their third Summer Of Circus season

018 marks a special year for circus. 250 years ago the artform was first introduced when Philip Astley, who is considered the creator of modern circus, first leapt into show business with his own ring of entertainment near Waterloo in London. Since then the genre has developed and evolved into many forms, combining circus tricks with physical theatre and storytelling. To celebrate this remarkable anniversary, Worthing Theatres have today announced the lineup for their third Summer of Circus season, where they will stage some of the world’s best circus companies at the Pavilion Theatre, from 18 May to 1 July. Launching the season in style on 1820 May will be the official world premiere of The
Exploded Circus by Mimbre. This allfemale contemporary circus production has a highly visual narrative that uses the scene of a devastated circus and its performers as an allegory to explore what we perceive as society, and how

show 8 Songs. A tribute to the mythical landscape of popular music, the show is a series of choreographed juggling vignettes set to eight classic rock and roll songs. Travelling especially from Spain for the season,
Compania Vavel Circus present Garbuix on 2324 June. Five women from five countries will bring delight and entertainment with their high tempo family show, which combines everything from music, shouting, fun, games and even a giant bear in this action led performance. A thrilling collaboration between two of the biggest companies in circus and dance then takes place as NoFit State Circus and Motionhouse join forces in their new production Block on 2728 June. Their innovative show explores life in the city, its contradictions and challenges. Twenty oversized blocks are deconstructed and reformed to create different cityscapes for the performers to engage with, with daring physicality, splitsecond timing and thrilling feats.

The main project that I’m bringing to the Festival is called Problem in Brighton and it’s a new musical theatre piece. It’s a bizarre rock and roll opera in collaboration with Lee Baker, a visual artist and a talented musician. I thought it was an opportunity to make something in Brighton, sort of my first project that’s made here – the first big project – outside my studio. Lee’s writing the music and then some other people I’ve met will be playing the music on instruments I’ve created. The music will be very interesting. The performers will perform very well (it is part of their contract). The venue will be clean and tidy. Beer will be available to purchase. Latecomers will be admitted (unless the show has already finished).

It was made by Cara Connolly and Martin Clark, who are documentary filmmakers from the fine art world in Glasgow. It is really a very interesting documentary because it’s a really, really strange project.

Life Model II is the second incarnation of the life model piece that I made for the Turner prize show. The first one was a male, whilst this one is a female figure. Everybody who visits the exhibition is invited to make a drawing of the life model, and all the drawings will form part of the exhibition. It is an artwork that begets other artwork. There’s the threedimensional work of the life model – a sculpture of somebody trying to stand still – and there’s the two dimensional work made by the visitors to the exhibition. It’s a piece about drawing, it’s a piece about everybody being included, about participating and making an exhibition yourself. CIRCUS & THEATRE
From largescale Big Top circus on Hove Lawns to wildly acclaimed theatre from the National Theatre of Scotland, here are a few of this year’s highlights in circus & theatre FAUNA Q& A WITH ACROBAT/CO-DIRECTOR RHIANNON CAVE-WALKER
ADAM Q& A WITH DIRECTOR CORA BISSETT
Fauna is a captivating exploration of primal behaviour in the animal kingdom. We caught up with the exciting new circus company behind it to find out more....
Adam is National Theatre of Scotland’s remarkable and uplifting production about one trans man’s powerful true story – and the winner of a clutch of awards. We caught up with Director Cora Bissett to find out more about the incredible true story behind the show.
Firstly, can you introduce your show and tell us what it is about? Our show is called Fauna. It’s a captivating exploration of primal behaviour, created by six leading professional artists. Fauna is also set to an original live soundtrack by awardwinning acoustic and percussive guitarist Geordie Little. Why should someone come and see your show? Fauna is a multidisciplinary new circus show that has entwined elements of dance, live music, high level acrobatics and physical theatre in a new and innovative way. It is also an exciting demonstration of physical strength, and pushes circus in a new artistic direction. Where did the idea and inspiration come from? The idea behind Fauna came from a very organic process. All of our artists wanted to explore movement and character in terms of our animalistic tendencies. It felt like a very rich source of inspiration for creating innovative ways of performing circus, while still giving purpose for tricks and flips. What sort of person is going to love this show? Any lover of movement, acrobatics and music will love our show. It’s targeted to all ages. What’s going to surprise people about this show? The way in which high level acrobatics is entwined into a strong narrative. Also, the development of the characters and the connections between performers. Wed 16Sat 19 May, Wed – Fri 7.30pm, Sat 2.30pm, Theatre Royal Brighton To read the full interview, head to brightonfestival.org/news
Firstly, can you introduce your show and tell us what it is about? Adam is the reallife story of a young man named Adam, who was born biologically female in Egypt but who, from a young age, knew himself to be male. The play charts his journey from Egypt to Glasgow, the struggles he goes through to be accepted as the man he knows himself to be. What sort of person is going to love this show? Anyone with a love of exciting theatre! All kinds of different people, young and old, from all over the world, came along and found something beautiful in Adam’s story, because it’s one that is both personal and universal. I had aunts and uncles in their 80's whom I wasn't sure would connect with it, but they were blown away. What’s going to surprise people about this show? Hopefully all sorts of things. The fact that Adam, on whom the story is based, does actually play himself alongside another actress. I was amazed how many people came out in Glasgow and only then discovered 'Oh wow, that was THE ACTUAL GUY!!'. Also, one to highlight is our designer Emily James’s beautiful set, which may look straightforward on the surface but is full of ingenious little secrets! It also features a 120 strong digital choir made up of trans and non binary people from all over the world, singing a beautiful score by the worldrenowned composer Jocelyn Pook. All the people you see singing recorded their own parts in various countries of the world, through their laptops, and so have never actually met any of the other choir members in the flesh. A truly virtual choir. Wed 9–Sat 12, Wed–Fri 8pm, Sat 7pm, Theatre Royal Brighton To read the full interview, head to brightonfestival.org/news

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC
CONTEMPORARY Whether it’s singersongwriters, Spotify stars or allfemale supergroups you’re after, Brighton Festival has you covered EZRA FURMAN
Fans of Chicago’s genderqueer rock’n’roll hero, Ezra Furman will testify as to the electric energy of his live shows. His onstage presence, hookladen garagepunk (think Jonathan Richman meets Spectorera Ramones meets the E Street Band), and confessional lyrics about sexuality, faith and politics, have all earned him a legion of followers on both sides of the Atlantic. Back with his newly rechristened band The Visions, and hot on the heels of the release of latest album Transangelic Exodus, this is a performer that must be seen to be believed. David Shrigley says: “Ezra Furman is, I think, one of the best writers of pop songs around today. He’s somebody I haven’t seen play, but I’ve got all his records.” Sat 26 May, 8pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall
DEERHOOF + STARGAZE
Revered rockers Deerhoof seem to change course on every album they release, displaying breathtaking originality, and creating a genre all of their own. This exclusive performance begins with a collaboration with orchestral collective Stargaze. Deerhoof’s founding member and drummer Greg Saunier presents special compositions based on tracks from the seminal 1993 album In on the Kill Taker by Fugazi. The second half sees Deerhoof perform songs from their extensive back catalogue, before members of Stargaze rejoin the band onstage for a stunning finale. David Shrigley says: “Deerhoof are a rock band from San Francisco who I made a record cover for about ten years ago. We’ve stayed in touch ever since. They’re a fantastic band, and a band whose music is not just great on record, but also really makes sense live. So, as the Guest Director, they were near the top of my list for bands I wanted to bring. Whenever anyone sees them play a live show, they’re always blown away by them.” Wed 9 May, 8pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall
Ezra Furman
MALCOLM MIDDLETON + IAIN SHAW Scottish singersongwriter Malcolm Middleton came to prominence as one half of Arab Strap. Now on his seventh solo album, he’s delighted to have been invited to perform by his friend David Shrigley, where he’ll preview new songs and revisit older work. Joining Malcolm on the bill is Iain Shaw, a Glasgow musician whose quirky folk songsmithery has turned Shrigley’s poems into incisive songs. Thu 24 May, 8pm, St George’s Church
David Shrigley says: “Malcolm Middleton is wellknown as a solo artist; however, he is also part of the influential indie rock band Arab Strap. Malcolm and I made a spoken word record together a couple of years ago and I’ve also made some artwork for album covers for him. I’m a big fan of his music. I think he’s one of the best singer songwriters in the country at the moment, or at least of his generation.”
BROWNTON A BBEY

MUSIC LES AMAZON ES D'AFR IQUE In a world music event, West Africa’s first all female super group has formed in the fight against violence towards women. Whether undisputed stars or wellkept secrets, this collective features some of the greatest Malian musicians of the moment: Mamani Keita, Rokia Koné, Mariam Doumbia, Awa Singho and Mariam Koné. Inspired by the formidable warriors of Dahomey, Les Amazones d’Afrique elegantly combine the Mandingo tradition with the power of today’s African megacities. Fighting for freedom, for being female and for being a musician, these divas will break the chains and steal your heart.

AM ANDA PALM ER Half of the cult favourite punk cabaret duo the Dresden Dolls and altrock icon, Amanda Palmer has long been a controversial figure. Since her beginnings in the band, and now as a solo artist, she has been keeping up a non stop schedule of releasing art, dressing up like a conjoined twin, doing things that ‘make outraged thinkpiece writers jiggle with glee’ (The Guardian) for many years. Audiences can leave their mild emotions at the door. Sun 13 May, 7.30pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall
LANKUM Combining distinctive vocal harmonies with uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar, Dublin four piece Lankum are at the forefront of bringing traditional song to a new generation. ‘There is folk that wants to whisper in your ear, and then there is the music of Lankum: urgent, desperate and detonating.’ ***** The Guardian

JO EP B EVING The story of Dutch pianist Joep Beving is truly a remarkable one. After recording an album of music in his kitchen primarily for the enjoyment of his family, he released them to Spotify. 85 million streams later, Beving has become one of the most listenedto living pianists in the world. DANCE
DANCE Brighton Festival’s opening weekend will see former Guest Director Hofesh Shechter return, and we’ve also rounded up some other picks from the brilliant dance programme ATTRACTOR Q& A WITH CHOREOGRAPHERS LUCY GUERIN & G ID EON OBA RZA NEK
Indonesia’s music duo Senyawa joins forces with two of Australia’s leading dance companies, Dancenorth and Lucy Guerin Inc to take you on a trancenoise odyssey in Attractor. Choreographers Lucy and Gideon give us the lowdown on this exciting new performance. Firstly, can you introduce your show and tell us what it is about? Attractor is a work where dance and music propel each other into heightened experiences for performers and spectators. It’s a collaboration with Indonesian music duo Senyawa. Eight dancers are swept up by the energy of the music that in turn responds to their physical abandonment. Senyawa reinterprets the Javanese tradition of trance through dance and music as a powerful, secular, presentday form. Their unusual sound borrows from the metal bands they listened to as teenagers – Black Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden – and Indonesian ritual and folk idioms. How will the work be staged? It begins with the two musicians and the dancers setting up in a circle centre stage. The music propels the dancers into movement and the musicians respond to the physical intensity of the dancers creating a visceral experience for the audience. About two thirds of the way through, 20 members of the audience get up from their seats and make their way to the stage where they join the dancers and become an integral part of the performance. These participants are volunteers that sign up to be part of the show beforehand. They arrive before it starts and are fitted with inear devices. When the time comes, they are verbally directed through their earpieces to go onstage and guided through a series of instructions to perform a dance that merges with the professional dancers. Why should someone come and see your show? We think audiences will be truly inspired by Attractor. This is a work that blurs the line between performer and spectator, creating an empathetic and intense experience for the viewer. The energy and skill of the dancers is not just an opportunity to sit back and watch, but to engage with the way that dance and music can enliven and transform us. GRAND FIN ALE ‘One of the British dance scene’s hottest properties’ (New York Times), Brighton Festival Associate Artist and former Guest Director Hofesh Shechter is back with his exhilarating new work. Grand Finale is at once comic, bleak and beautiful, reflecting the uncertainty and confusion of the troubled times we are living in. Characteristically visceral, Shechter creates a vision of a world in freefall, full of anarchic energy and violent comedy. With an exceptional international ensemble of ten dancers and six live musicians, Grand Finale is part gig, part dance, part theatre, and wholly original. KAYA KAYA explores human experiences of displacement, drawing on the strength and resilience of those searching for belonging in a new community. With a unique movement vocabulary, fusing traditional Turkish folk dance with contemporary styles, Brighton based choreographer Ceyda Tanc’s work challenges gender stereotypes by utilising the virtuoso movements of male Turkish dancers for her allfemale company, conveying striking shapes and an emotive and sensual energy. B LAAS (B LOW) Created by Dutch theatremaker Boukje Schweigman with visual artist Cocky Eek and performer Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti, Blaas is a weird and wonderful ballet of abstract configurations. Playing with the boundaries of physical space, this wordless piece of visual theatre creates a mysterious and disorientating world for the spectator – offering a new perspective on everyday reality. SPOKEN WORD & COMEDY
SPOKEN WORD & COMEDY
After thoughtprovoking wordsmithery and unconventional poetry performance? A selection of what’s on offer at this year’s Brighton Festival…. BANG SAID THE G UN Q& A W ITH DON COCKRILL Bang Said The Gun calls itself poetry for people who don’t like poetry. We find out why. Can you tell us what your show is about? Bang Said The Gun is a poetry event for people who don’t necessarily like poetry. We take the best spoken word poets around and smash them together with entertainment to create a raw and raucous rollercoaster ride of emotions. It’s loud, political, trivial, serious and very funny. It will make you laugh out loud and cry tears of wonderment. How and where will the work be staged? We will be at St George’s Church in Kemp Town on Saturday 19 May – the show kicks off at 7.30pm. One stage, one mic, soul music, handmade shakers, balloons and animations (and that is just the first 5 minutes of the show). Why should someone come along? To have their belief in humanity and the human experience restored. Or just to a have a good time.

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2018
What’s going to surprise people about this show? If you have never encountered a Bang Said The Gun show, you’ll be surprised by the raw energy and noise produced. If you have never experienced live poetry, you’ll be surprised by just how moving words can be. A little bit of truth can be an amazing thing when you are bombarded and confronted by dishonesty and fake news on a daily basis. You’ll also be surprised by how much fun you will have. It’s a joyous show to be part of. Bang Said The Gun is at St George’s Church, Kemp Town, on Sat 19 May, 8pm To read the full interview, head to brightonfestival.org/news

Brighton Festival will be pairing some of the freshest poets around with live illustrators for a sharp, straighttalking night of poetry and visual art. Hollie McNish,
Where did the inspiration behind it come from? Bang Said The Gun was started by Martin Galton and Daniel Cockrill 20 years ago as an antidote to dreary poetry and even drearier poetry nights. They wanted it to be a night that everyone could enjoy whether you liked poetry or not. The other members of the group – Rob Auton and Laurie Bolger – have added their ideas and charm to the mix to create a real rock ’n’ roll poetry show.

CLASSICAL
CLASSICAL Classical music expert & Latest 7 reviewer Andrew Connal discusses some of his picks from the programme BELSHAZZAR ’S FEA ST The climax of this year’s Festival is a banquet of 20thcentury English classics. Now Britten’s evocative ‘Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes’ and Vaughan Williams’ idyll ‘The Lark Ascending’ are frequently performed but William Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast signifies a special occasion, in this case the 50th anniversary of the Brighton Festival Chorus. We sang this work in BFC’s firstever concert under the baton of the composer. It was the performance of a lifetime! I remember being terrified that Walton would not last to the final Alleluias, he had gone so red in the face. This year’s performance promises to be as exhilarating with tenor James Rutherford as the illfated king
WAR REQUIEM Benjamin Britten’s heartfelt plea for reconciliation, composed for the dedication of Coventry Cathedral, is an excellent choice to mark the centenary of the end of World War I. A splendid team of soloists, Claire Booth, Ian Bostridge and Gerald Finley, joins the massed orchestras of the Britten Sinfonia and Orchestre de Picardie with the Brighton Festival Chorus and Brighton Festival Youth Choir under the exemplary direction of Arie van Beek. Sat 12 May, 7.30pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall
of Babylon. Sir Richard Armstrong directs the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with an extended percussion section to illustrate the exotic glamour of ancient Babylon. For the entrance of the king, Walton requires fanfares from two brass bands, which were set up on either balcony. It took ages to get them synchronised! Then there is a shivering, snakelike hiss as the silken tyrant faces his doom. It’s all very tense, leading up to the climactic shout of “SLAIN!”, when the cruel king is killed and a frenzied hymn of thanksgiving takes over. Sun 27 May, 7.30pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall Supported by University of Sussex
tickets. Who will be performing this year? The singers selected by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation for 2018 are probably already stars of the Glyndebourne Tour, ready to bring the drama of opera to the concert platform. One thing’s certain, they never fail to delight. Fri 18 May, 1pm Theatre Royal Brighton
TANGOMOT ÁN I trust the seats in All Saints are sturdy because the vivacity of this concert could easily get even the furniture dancing. In true Festival style this Parisianbased ensemble draws on an extraordinary and astonishing selection of international styles. Most likely dressed in their signature boilersuits, they’ll bring magical tangoinspired sounds to the church’s glorious acoustic, which is a world away from their usual upmarket cellar bars and cabaret venues. Wed 23 May, 7:30pm, All Saints Church
SONGS OF THE SEA For an island nation the sea is a perpetual source of inspiration and fascination, so this concert must be about as good as it gets: Mark Padmore (tenor), Roderick Williams (baritone) and Julius Drake (piano), all three Festival favourites, present a gallant celebration of maritime adventure in song. The magnificent Rory Kinnear recites a selection of poems to match. The mix of emotions, swagger and charm promises a delightful afternoon. Sun 13 May, 3pm Glyndebourne
JERWOOD YOUNG ARTISTS The Lunchtime Concerts showcase marvellous upandcoming young talent and are always exciting and excellent value. You just know they’re destined soon for top venues with topprice BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2018
CH IN EKE! JUN IOR QUARTET
At a time when school music is struggling, the burgeoning talent and success of youth orchestras like Chineke! are a beacon of hope. They have already been a great inspiration to the Brighton Youth Orchestra. That the junior quartet is offering such an ambitious programme is a great treat. Quartets by Florence Price and the Caribbean Mozart, Chevalier de SaintGeorges, will go very well with Beethoven. Hearing will be believing! Thur 24 May, 1pm, All Saints Church

ART & FILM
ART & F I L M Brighton Festival celebrates image & moving image, and how fireworks can be created when the two combine KRONOS QUARTET WITH SAM GREEN AND TRIO DA KA L I
A double dose of Kronos Quartet: looking to their past with a live cinema performance and to the present in their latest collaboration with Trio da Kali. In A Thousand Thoughts, Oscarnominated filmmaker Sam Green questions how music can change the world – combining archival footage and filmed interviews with Philip Glass, Terry Riley and more, with live narration and music from the quartet. The quartet will then be joined by Mali’s young Griot supergroup Trio Da Kali, following their exquisite collaboration on album Ladilikan in 2017. Brought together by the Aga Khan Music Initiative, Trio Da Kali unites three outstanding musicians from the Mande culture of southern Mali who come from a long line of distinguished griots, featuring musical director and balafon player Fodé Lassana Diabaté, bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyanté and singer Hawa ‘Kassé Mady’ Diabate. Trio Da Kali and Kronos Quartet’s debut album Ladilikan has just been announced as fRoots and Transglobal's Album of the Year 2017. A reminder of Kronos Quartet’s spirit of continuous exploration, it’s another reason to be cheerful that they have been making music for 40 years. Sun 20 May, 7.30pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall
XFRMR Visual artist Robbie Thomson harnesses the power of the Tesla coil in this unique sensory phenomenon. A pulsing soundtrack reminiscent of ambient electronica – created via laptop and synthesiser – strikes visuals from the Tesla coil, shooting sensational sonic and visual fireworks flaring through the Faraday cage that contains it. Wed 16 – Sun 20 May, 7.30pm & 9.30pm, The Spire
BRETT GOODROAD Brett Goodroad grew up as part of a farming family in Montana, and now lives and works in San Francisco. He has driven combines through the breadbasket, wrangled buffalo in the Gallatin Valley, and delivered organic vegetables through America’s southwest. Goodroad’s paintings are being exhibited at Phoenix Gallery throughout the Festival. Wed 9 May – Sun 27 May, 11am – 5pm, (closed Mon & Tue), Phoenix Gallery
SHUT DOWN Movement, spoken word, rap and striking visual imagery collide in the premiere of Charlotte Vincent’s powerful and darkly funny new film installation. Played across six screens, with an outstanding cast of seven performers including three talented teenagers, SHUT DOWN investigates the pressures, contradictions and confusions of being a man.
Double Bills is a series in which classics of British cinema from 1968/1970 are paired with a film from another era that shares its radical spirit THE BLOOD OF A POET (1932) + PERFORMANCE (1970) Surreal and dreamlike, Jean Cocteau’s first film begins with an artist in his studio startled to find a mouth he has painted beginning to move: The Blood Of A Poet is a personal, poetic, symbolic fantasy. In Performance, a gangster hides out in the bohemian home of a reclusive rock star in this British classic. Sun 6 May, 1pm, Duke of York’s Picturehouse

Sun 13 May, 1pm, Duke of York’s Picturehouse
WITCH FINDER GENERAL (1968) + A FIELD IN ENGLAND (2013) Witch Finder General is disturbing tale set during the English Civil War. BOOKS & DEBATE
B O OK S & D E BAT E PROGRAMMER’S PICKS Alice O’Keefe, freelance journalist and Brighton Festival Books & Debates programmer, picks a few of the literary events she’s most looking forward to. TOM HOD GKIN SON : BUSINESS FOR BOHEMIAN S Tom Hodgkinson's book, Business for Bohemians, is a witty and inspiring guide to making the most of your working life. Drawing on his experience as editor of The Idler, the book is full of practical advice about how to turn your creative ambitions into a successful and sustainable business. Hodgkinson helped to convince me that it might be possible to live a fulfilling and imaginative life, and also bring home the bacon. He even made me see the point of – no, actually enjoy – learning to use spreadsheets. So, if you've ever dreamed of getting out of the rat race and working for yourself (and frankly, who hasn't?), this is the event for you. Sat 5 May, 8pm, Brighton & Hove High School
NICOLA BARKER AND NICK HARKAWAY: FUTURE PERFECT What will life in a total digital society look like? Novelists have often been the first to imagine the human consequences of technological progress (see: JG Ballard, Philip K Dick). Nicola Barker recently won the Goldsmiths Prize for her novel H(A)ppy, which imagines a society in which every innermost thought is subject to total surveillance. In his epic, multilayered novel Gnomon, Nick Harkaway (son of John le Carré) also explores the impact of big data and surveillance on human lives. There are some eery similarities between these two books. I'll be talking to the authors about how they imagine the future and asking them for a steer on my next lottery numbers. Sun 13 May, 8pm, Brighton & Hove High School
BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2018
BRETT ANDERSON: COAL B LACK MORNINGS Yes, this is Brett Anderson as in Suede, and it turns out that he is a proper writer: his autobiography, Coal Black Mornings, is so much more than a rock memoir. This is a genuine literary treat, a moving and evocative account of the childhood that shaped the music we know so well. Anderson grew up on a council estate in Haywards Heath, with an artistic mother and an eccentric father (a Liszt obsessed taxi driver). He will be talking to The Guardian journalist Alexis Petridis. Sun 20 May, 7.30pm, Theatre Royal Brighton
FION A MOZLEY AN D MEGAN H UN TER: TH E JOURNEY TO PUB LICATION
Fiona Mozley is a hugely talented young novelist whose dark and dazzling debut, Elmet, was shortlisted for the Booker. Joining Fiona is Megan Hunter author of The End We Start From, her debut novel set to be made into a film coproduced by Benedict Cumberbatch. I'm chairing Megan Hunter this event, and I'll be asking them both about their experiences of making the transition from aspiring author to published writer. This is an event for writers and readers alike. Thu 10 May, 8pm, Brighton & Hove High School
RACH EL CU SK Rachel Cusk is one of the most intriguing and original writers working in Britain today. Her recent novels Outline and Transit have been called masterpieces, and I don't think that is an exaggeration; when I read them, I had the rare and exciting feeling of discovering a totally new approach to the form. Her new novel Kudos completes the trilogy narrated by Faye, a character who is sketched out through the stories other people tell her. I can't wait to hear her talk about her work, in conversation with the novelist Joanna Kavenna. Sat 12 May, 8pm, Brighton & Hove High School

BACK TO BAC K MAJOR SPONSOR The University of Sussex – Laura McDermott, Creative Director, Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts What made University of Sussex decide to become a Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival supporter? “The University of Sussex has been a longstanding sponsor of Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival and views it as an important part of our continued commitment to the arts and the local community. Brighton Festival gives the University an opportunity to work with leading thinkers and artists as well as a chance for us to engage with our own supporters at events" ViceChancellor, Professor Adam Tickell.

SPONSOR Southern Water – CEO Ian Mcaulay
What made Southern Water decide to become a Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival supporter? We’re always looking for new and exciting ways to connect with our customers to find out what they think we should be doing to secure the future of their water supplies. Being part of the Brighton Festival is a fantastic opportunity to start a conversation about what we can all do as a community to tackle future challenges including how we cope with climate change and more people! Is this your first year or have you been a supporter before? Southern Water has supported the festival in many different ways. In the past we have sponsored productions that had a waterbased message and supplied water for the Children’s’ Parade. Can you see real benefits, in a business/organisational sense, from your involvement as a sponsor? Any opportunity to have a conversation with our customers is a huge benefit to Southern Water especially as we are making plans for the next 20 years. We want everyone to value water as much as we do! Our live pop up talk show and community team will be supporting the events at Weekend Without Walls welcoming artists, residents and visitors to Brighton and Hove to join us for a round table conversation about the utility of water.
PATRON Sue Addis, Owner of Donatello
What were your motivations for joining the Patrons Circle
and what do you enjoy about being a Patron? I feel very privileged to live and run businesses in the centre of a city full of magnificent, historic venues. By being a patron of Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival I feel a part of what I love most about Brighton – the exciting performance arts scene – which needs constant support to thrive. Patrons are invited to special events and receive inside information, including updates on the transformation of the Corn Exchange & Studio Theatre; a project which will protect Brighton Dome’s heritage. I have contributed to the Seat Appeal and will be very proud to have my name on a seat in the Corn Exchange for years to come whilst supporting the restoration of these two venues.
How many events do you usually attend during Brighton Festival and how do you choose what you see? Last year we attended about six events but this year we’ve gone for it and signed up to around 20. We get excited by things that are unusual or take us out of our comfort zone – we can’t wait for the overnight Arms of Sleep at Firle Place! We’re also huge music fans and are really looking forward to Ezra Furman at the Dome. We’re also going to a lot of shows that Andrew Comben or David Shrigley suggested we go to! Would you recommend being Patrons to others? Of course, we’re loving it so far. It’s great to share in something so vital to our city and that brings us personally closer to the action.
How many events do you usually attend during Brighton Festival and how do you choose what you see? I attend as many events as possible at Brighton Festival but every year it flies by and I wish I had gone to more! My preference is always dance but between friends we encourage each other to book different performances.
Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival would like to thank:
Would you recommend being Patrons to others? Definitely – if you enjoy the performing arts and want them to thrive whilst receiving the benefits of being a Patron then join us!
PATRONS Seb & Jo Royle, Founders of PLATF9RM
are doing – and especially excited by the developments at the Corn Exchange. It’s just great to be able to contribute and be part of something bigger in the city.
What were your motivations for joining the Patrons Circle and what do you enjoy about being Patrons? One of the reasons we love living in Brighton is the fantastic and accessible arts and cultural scene. We're hugely impressed with what the team at the Dome and Festival

y nephew is gay. He’s a vibrant and motivated young guy in a happy relationship and soon to finish his studies. When I was told that he had come out I called my mother to tell her how proud I was of him. Her response was classic – “Well I don’t know why love, you did all the leg work”. I roared laughing and it still makes me smile, because it showed her in the very best light, a mum who was proud of her gay son and now of her gay grandson too. It was never an issue with mum and dad, they expressed surprise but never sadness – and that has made my life so much easier to live.
“ This is me and I am not prepared to hide away that me ” Coming out can be a difficult element of living in a homophobic world, it’s not a right of passage, more like an enforced statement before a world that judges. That said it can be an important statement, a massive flagwaving moment, a message of intent and of defiance and determination: “This is me, and I am not prepared to hide away that me”. The nephew is completing a final project for his Masters degree and his chosen topic is about creating queer spaces. He’s spoken to a lot of people about their experiences of gay life and gay

spaces, the places that we inhabited, the clubs and bars, the clandestine spaces and yes the illegal ones, the ones that were and still are taboo. I’m not surprised at the responses he has had either. Much as we all love our liberation, the hard fought for freedoms that so many of us now enjoy, there is still a hankering for the behind closed doors world that was once our only freedom. It’s easy to see why, it might well have been grubby and certainly not without danger – even in the bars and clubs there was always that element of fear. But it was also exciting, thrilling even. There was a sense of being special in our alienated world and it was always populated with characters who, in that environment, were determined to live life to the full, dancing, drinking and enjoying furtive dalliances in dark corners. So should we want to return to a world of fear and danger? Do we really need queer spaces? I suspect we do because even though we have those new found and fought for freedoms, they are simply not enough to fulfil all people’s needs. There are people who still need the secrecy and security of those places, and for whatever reason they happen to choose. It is entirely personal, no one should be forced out, forced to go public or not until we have that real equality, by which I mean a world on a global scale that does not judge.
