merging from April on a flotilla of fine food and delicious wines makes me think of the simpler things in life. How I still love the easy dishes of my childhood, cheese on toast, sausage toad and a proper Lancashire hotpot. And when it comes to eating out, despite my love of our superb restaurants I can be equally excited by the simpler things in life, and especially by breakfast. Some of the week I work from home, and I never skimp on the first meal of the day, once that is done I can settle down to work. If I’m in the slightest bit hungry my mind will turn to an urgent cake that needs to be baked or an essential casserole, it’s the way I’m wired. Breakfast out is my treat on the days I go in to Latest TV to record my shows, and I have a few favourite places in which to indulge in the first dish of the day. Close to home I go to Brewed in the Lewes Road. It’s an absolute gem, first class coffee of course but also a fine selection of dishes to start the day, as well as the best cheese and leek muffins to be had. I usually settle down with a latte and their stunning bacon and cheese bap, quality piggy and griddles cheese cooked to a savoury crisp, and on the side their spicy mayobased dressing which knocks the spots off ketchup, trust me. The guys behind this tiny place are fun too, always cheery – just what you need first thing. Closer to the studio it’s Red Roaster. I always loved this place but since the refurb I love it even more, and I love their breakfast dishes. It’s a little more pricey than average but when you assess the quality of the ingredients and the amount of culinary skill invested in each plate you can see why. From a simple bacon butty to a full English, this is faultless stuff and there are some great options from the normal breakfast fare that I am gradually working my way through. Needless to say, the coffee is great and the service delightful. Of course I cannot talk breakfast without mentioning Marmalade where I still love the ambience and the food, and where better to go for boiled eggs and soldiers? Last week saw the launch of The Ivy in the Lane, an exciting and glamorous addition to the town and I see that they also do breakfast, so no doubt that will be on my list very soon.

THIS BOY TOM Local children perform a musical about bullying at school

B

rightonbased JW Productions presents the acclaimed new musical from local writer Natalie Sexton. This Boy Tom is a unique professional musical, performed entirely by 9–14 yearolds, at The Old Courtroom during Brighton Fringe 2018. The Story It’s been two years since the fire, when Tom lost his little brother. Tom starts at a new school and is bullied for the way he looks, but with new girl Flora’s arrival is it time for something new? It’s a life affirming story of acceptance, courage and friendship ideal for 1016 yr olds. The cast of talented young performers are made of actors from across the region, some of whom already have West End credits to their name. Eliot Milward said, “I play Tom, the show is all about the life of the person being bullied… how they feel and how devastating bullying can be for someone… but it’s also fun and its’ a great show that everyone should see.” Clara ShepherdThompson, who plays new girl Flora said’ “It really teaches you about bullying and I feel it has a moral.” A winner of the BBC Musical Theatre Award, Natalie's training was sponsored at the prestigious London School of Musical Theatre. Since then,

JOHN FINNEMORE John Finnemore, writer and star of many multiaward winning BBC Radio shows brings his brand new live show to the stage for the Brighton Festival. Victoria Nangle speaks to the man himself about writing, radio and Pooh Bear’s sticky habit. Hi John, how the devil are you today? Roaringly well, thank you, how are you? Spiffing, thank you! What has prompted you to take your show on the road to a live audience? Well, in our radio sketch show, the cast and I get to do a lot of silly voices – but I don't think our audience realise that we also have extremely silly faces. This tour is an attempt to put that right. Each episode has so many moving parts – standing alone as sketches, linking to previous sketches, and previous shows – what is your process for writing an episode and a series? First, I organise a series of little tryout nights to make sure I write new sketches in good time, without a frantic scramble at the dead line. This never works – it just means I have six frantic deadline scrambles instead of one – but it's a nice idea. Then, I ditch the mediocre ones, and re write the rest; and we record them over three nights at the BBC. Then, Ed the producer and I get together with a whole pack of index cards representing the recorded sketches, again we ditch the mediocre ones, and compile the rest into episodes. And how did you choose from the series what to include in the live show, or is it all new material for the live show? At the moment, it's about half and half. But all the stuff that's in there from the series has been picked because there's something about it that will be particularly fun to do on stage, from the visual spectacular which is our song about posh men's red trousers, to the technical challenge of dressing four of us up as goldfish....

As the Crown Prince of BBC Radio 4 comedy, is the sitcom format in any danger of calling you back – either as a follow on to Cabin Pressure or something completely new and wonderful? It certainly might, though I am also enjoying the freedom I get from my series of oneoff

Speaking of which – did the Pooh Bear intervention work? Yes – it's often things I don't expect, though anything with animals tends to do well. As for Pooh, I'm happy to tell you that since that time in series one where all Pooh's friends got together to tell him how worried they were about his

“ The cast and I get to do a lot of silly

voices – but I don't think our audience realise that we also have extremely silly faces ” comedies, Double Acts, not to have to reset the situation at the end of every episode. Would you ever consider moving to television? By all means, if they let me do it my own way. But they tend not to. Radio's much better at that. Having had such a large output of memorable material, but with few typical catchphrases, are you surprised by which characters and creations of yours stick in your fans' minds?

destructive relationship with honey; he's now been off the Yellow for nearly six years, and regularly goes on tours of clearings in the Hundred Acre Wood helping young bear cubs stay 'nonsticky'. Tigger, on the other hand, is now in prison. So… I ask you to tell me a story… Can you tell me a story… please? Well! Since you ask me for a story... if you come along to the show in May, I am cooking up one about a dachshund dogsled team you may find... ludicrous. What next for John Finnemore, after the live tour? Probably a nap. John Finnemore’s Flying Visit, Brighton Dome Concert Hall, Thursday 17 May, 7.30pm, £21/17/10

very new production from the acclaimed Kneehigh Theatre company is greeted with excitements and anticipation. Their approach to staging and reinventing classic stories is faultless, adventurous, thought provoking and entertaining too. This is fearless theatre making for a modern generation and in the past productions like Brief Encounter, Tristan and Yseult and Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca have been showered with praise – quite rightly so. So the arrival of The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk is creating an equal stir amongs lovers of great theatre – but who are these lovers and why do they fly? It’s time to meet Marc and Bella Chagall! They are the Flying Lovers of Vitebsk! Partners in life and on canvas, Marc and Bella are immortalised as the picture of romance. But whilst on canvas they flew, in life they walked through some of the most devastating times in history. Daniel Jamieson's The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk traces this young couple as they navigate the Pogroms, the Russian Revolution, and each other. Emma Rice's final production

arsons Son & Basley's May auction, despite the appalling weather, once again proved to be very successful with the 'star of the show' this time round being a building plot in Eastbourne that once housed St Luke's Church before it was demolished during 2007, selling for £402,000, some £27,000 above the lower end of its guide. This was followed very closely in terms of aggressive

bidding on a studio flat on Denmark Villas that from a guide of £125,000/£135,000 sold for just over £140,000. central locations by selling for no less than £33,000! The last lot of the day, a small parcel of land without planning permission in Bognor Regis sold for £30,000 and was purchased by someone who on the day of the auction was celebrating her birthday! Continuing with their new initiative, PS&B started the day with their now traditional charity lot, this time with the benefactors being the deserved and wonderful people at Chestnut Tree House who provide end of life care for terminally ill children and young people. The prize, a pamper day and afternoon tea for two at the Hilton Hotel on Brighton seafront, as very kindly donated by So Legal Solicitors who are based in Hove and Eastbourne. The charity lot sold for £180, however as Auctioneer Simon Caplin explains, "this amount was very generously topped up by an additional £100 by one of our clients Robbie Raggio, who is a patron, huge supporter and fundraiser of Chestnut Tree House whereupon we are most grateful to Robbie for his generosity. In total we were able to raise £280.00 for our chosen charity.” Entries for their next auction are now being received. psandb.co.uk/latestauction advertising feature

W

hen the listings first said that The Bridge was starting on BBC2 this Friday, it was a fair assumption to think it was simply time for a repeat of the epic Scandinavian crime drama. It is, after all, ridiculously good. Compounding the idea that it was a repeat was the brief description of the episode: a body is found on the bridge between Denmark and Sweden. How could a fourth series be made, after all – Saga’s in prison... It’s a brand new fourth series and Saga is in prison! One of the earliest trailblazers of the Scandinavian crime drama craze, The Bridge has previously balanced the dynamics between detective Saga Norén and her partners with the brutal and political intrigue of serial killers. She was awesome in an unspokenonthespectrum kind of a way, finding that navigating through psychopaths’ minds difficult in the same way that she found navigating through pedestrian life.

“ National Treasure and owner of the

best immovable bouffant on the small screen: Mary Berry ” The end of series three crescendoed with Saga doing the unspeakable, and ending up in clink – putting her out of the investigative loop you’d think. No! New crime and Swedish Henrik Sabroe starts to investigate the macabre murder with his Danish colleague, Jonas Mandrup. But Henrik misses his colleague Saga Norén... Set your digibox to series link this gem now. A soon to be favourite starting this week is Britain’s Best Home Cook, cashing in on the trend of telly shows that make your mouth water for food that’s not on your plate at tea time. It’s a brand new cookery competition and the new home of National Treasure and owner of the best immovable bouffant on the small screen: Mary Berry. She heads up the judges, joined by produce expert Chris Bavin, top chef Dan Doherty, with ‘quirky host’ duties taken on by Claudia Winkleman. Ten passionate home cooks battle it out over eight episodes, with themes getting increasingly difficult in a not unfamiliar format of two rounds per show. Wonder if the Beeb are regretting losing Bake Off? Talking of old favourites with a new facelift, this week is the 20th anniversary of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’s first broadcast. Having since become known as something of an international phenomenon, as well as spawning programmes about the show itself, its scandals and triumphs, Millionaire’s birthdaytime is being marked with a week of brand new episodes hosted by controversial motorhead Jeremy Clarkson. The BBC’s outcast is ITV’s last gameshow host. The Bridge, Friday, BBC2, 9pm Britain’s Best Home Cook, Thursday, BBC1, 8pm Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, every week night, ITV1, 9pm

ou can’t have missed LatestTV’s recent superstar addition to the news team in the form of a certain Mr Guy Lloyd. No stranger to viewers, with Guy Lloyd’s 2Minute Telly Show picking the brains of Brightonians on the street for the last few years, he’s now with us every night anchoring Latest News. So where else would you expect to find our Guy Lloyd during Brighton Fringe and Brighton Festival month than deep in the soul of it? He and Latest News will be in the thick of it filming every day at the iconic pop up Brighton Fringe venue – the Warren.

The Warren, by St Peter’s Church, is a hotbed of activity – from daytime children’s shows to late night cabaret – allowing LatestTV to bring a taste of the festivities directly into your living room. The Warren has been a stalwart of the Brighton Fringe for years now, run by Otherplace Productions whose previous homes include The Warren’s initial site behind the Brighton Centre, as well as the Basement in the North Laine. At each turn the venue, the production company behind the venue, and the shows they support have been showered with awards every year. Now that’s a calibre we can get behind! Guy Lloyd at The Warren for the duration of the Brighton Fringe is just another example of how LatestTV continues to strive to make sure they have the right person in the right place at the right time.
