PROJECT BRIGHTON Artists Open Houses opens its doors wide, as they share their excitement at the trails running through the city, the region, into the lives of the societally excluded and of the artists of tomorrow.

W

e’re really excited that the Artists Open Houses festival is bigger and better than ever this May, with over 200 Open House venues opening their doors all round the city and out to Saltdean, Rottingdean and beyond. The festival is a real celebration of talent of the 1,000 plus artists and makers living in the city and region. As well as the many Open House trails within the city, there is also a trail of 18 houses in the beautiful Downland village of Ditchling – and also venues in the countryside villages of Hassocks, Streat and South Heighton.

“ Our festival is an inclusive event,

welcoming participation from all areas of the community ”

Our festival is an inclusive event, welcoming participation from all areas of the community – anyone can take part so long as they live in the area and consider themselves to be an artist! Alongside a plethora of amazing established artists and makers, Artists Open Houses venues include several schools. This year PACA Academy in Portslade, Varndean, Dorothy Stringer and Brighton and Hove High School, will all be showing work of school students of all ages. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

This year we have introduced a great new project for young and emerging artists called New Grounds, which includes storytelling, performance, dance and sound art, at three different venues (see the Projects trail on the AOH website). We also welcome participation from artists potentially otherwise excluded form the art world mainstream, including those experiencing periods of homelessness, in recovery from drug and alcohol issues, mental health issues and artists with learning disabilities. Winner of the Latest’s Best Open House Award last year was Montefiore Artists, where all exhibited work is made by artists with learning disabilities and/or mental health needs. Its important to us that visitors can also explore their own creativity, and many Artists Open Houses offer workshops and events for both adults and children (see the Events page of the AOH website). When you need a break from looking at all the great art and crafts on show, many Open Houses also offer wonderful homemade tea and cakes. Also, don't forget to vote for your favourite Open House throughout the festival (see homepage of AOH website): The winning venue will be awarded the annual Latest Best Open House Award. Over 200,000 people visit the Artists Open Houses annually, many buying their first piece of art as a result, as well as getting to meet and talk to some of the amazing 1,000 plus exhibiting artists and makers. Pick up a copy of the brochure at stations, libraries, museums, AOH venues and around town or take a look at: www.aoh.org.uk

NOW & THEN Andy Garth: Loved the Tunnel

F

or those of you who read my column I am sure there are lots of Brightonians, and of course Hovarians (or Hovites) who like seeing pictures of things that have since disappeared. Well this week is no

“ It still smells of the

steam and smoke and is coated in soot ” exception, as a couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to inspect the only accessible part of the railway tunnel that went from Kemp Town Station, which was approximately 970 metres(1,075 yards) long and exited at the side of Elm Grove School carrying on over the old Lewes Road Viaduct and in to Brighton.

This tour was arranged by my friend Carol, who founded the Brighton Past Facebook site which has nearly 37,000 members. Its interest in our fair city is unbelievable and I would advise anyone that loves their ;towns; to check it out. Anyway, plug done and a short report on the visit. There is only about 100m to look at but it still smells of the steam and smoke and is coated in soot. It was a single track tunnel, which was used mainly for goods, with the last train having passed through it in 1971. The two pictures I have included are a view from the tunnel in the 1960s, which is the view I had, and the other picture shows the actual Kemp Town Station which is now the Freshfield Industrial Estate and probably answers the question: Why is there a train coming out of the Bingo Hall!!!?

The Elvis Dead: Rob Kemp

As Rob Kemp steps onto the stage he introduces the show in an unassuming manner, setting the scene – this is where cult horror classic movie The Evil Dead II meets Elvis Presley. And thus we see "just a man from Wolverhapmton" transform into our very own Ash, battling his posessed girlfriend, being posessed himself, and fighting for his very survival as he sings his way – with a truly remarkable voice – through genius adaptations of The King's classic hits chronicling the story. Kemp is incredible. This is a concert mixing horror, drama, comedy, the active deconstruction of the stage's third wall, as well as so many brilliant and hilarious props and make up changes that it is actually spellbinding. I am Somebody: Sirqus Alfon Sirqus Alfon's uplifting hour of digitally enhanced comedic anarchy, pumping music and slapstick fun had the audience in stitches. It was a visual delight of first class physical theatre and technical displays with slick ragga, beatboxing and banana slapping silliness. Having been street performers the Swedish trio have figured out the intricate balance of entertaining and involving a crowd. Sirqus Alfon perfectly pitched their show to xennials and their families and the internet/ gaming generation. Their unique brand of organised chaos involved laser light shows, humour and catchy songs. They broke down audience barriers, while playfully inviting us to like and laugh at ourselves and each other.

Chaula’s is renowned for its signature dishes, distinctive décor and friendly staff. All meals are made fresh to order and every curry has its own distinctively flavoured sauce. There is also a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan, as well as gluten and wheatfree dishes. Buffet available 12pm–3pm, Monday to Saturday. Lewes, BN7 2LP, 01273 476707 | www.chaulas.co.uk

Adam This was the highly emotional true story of a person being unable to exist because of their native country's refusal to recognise, let alone tolerate, transgender people. Adam Kashmiry himself told of his struggle, superbly supported by a fine performance from Rehanna MacDonald, as he escaped an oppressive Egypt to seek asylum and his true identity in Glasgow. The multimedia elements worked well, as did Emily James's inspired trapdoor set which doubled as dancefloor and dosshouse, while Jocelyn Pook's score was performed sparingly but to devastating effect by a virtual choir. A powerful production of one man's journey from darkness to light. Theatre Royal Brighton, 9 May 2018

Making a move into property investment? Do you think you could be achieving a higher rent? No longer able to manage your property yourself?

Take a seat.

014_015_LH879_Harrington-DPS-MAYW3-P1-2_FP Ad 11/05/2018 10:17 Page 2

Fed up with your current agent? We are finding that more and more landlords are becoming increasingly concerned with the service they are currently receiving. Whether that be due to their agent being bought out by a larger corporate agent or the fact that their management team are no longer local and run a call centre style department. Harringtons have been an independent agent for 25 years and will remain an independent agent for the next 25 years guaranteeing a consistent, personal and expert service.

Do you know who is looking after your investment? We all prefer speaking with a familiar person opposed to a stranger don’t we? We are a small yet extremely efficient team at Harringtons and we know that our landlords value the fact they can usually speak with the same person who knows them, their property and their tenants.

Can your agent provide advice on all aspects of buying and letting? Harringtons are a specialist letting agent and although do not directly deal with sales have an active acquisition department who often advise current and potential landlords on new purchases, sales and development of current portfolios. We are here to ensure your investment is safe and maximised to its full potential and any new investment decisions are wise ones. It is vital to speak to a letting agent before purchasing a buy to let property, speak to the experts before making one of the biggest decisions you may ever make.

Does your agent appreciate your specific needs? We often find landlords come to us seeking a tailor made service whereas other agents may not have been able to accommodate their wishes. We work with landlords who have just one rental property and are emotionally connected to that property and like to remain involved and we also deal with landlords who have multiple properties who do not wish to have any involvement but trust us to make decisions with their best interest in mind. We are able to cater to each landlords individual needs and create a service personal to you.

oyal wedding fever is taking over our tellies this week, as St George flags get confused flying high without a glimpse of international football on the telly. After teaser stings on Sky’s channels, and much kerfuffle in the tabloids as who is and isn’t invited to this Royal event, finally it’s here. And very much in the style of Prince Harry and his betrothed Meghan Markle, it’s gone against orthodox convention and is happening on a Saturday – no day off work! But also plenty of other things to do on a sunny weekend day if it’s just not your bag (especially if you happen to live in the middle of somewhere that’s having a Festival, Fringe and Great Escape!). If you do want to watch proceedings from start to finish it’s all there on the Beeb for five majestic hours. If you want to pretend that you have, there’s highlights of the wedding on BBC2 in the evening. Always good to have a cheat sheet. If you want to send the whole thing up in glorious British

“ It’s gone against orthodox

convention and is happening on a Saturday – no day off work! ” satirical style then ignore the main event and treat yourself to Tuesday night’s The Windsors Royal Wedding, starring Kathryn Drysdale and Richard Goulding as the happy couple – a full hour of Harry Enfield, Paul Kaye, Haydn Gwynne et al stuffing the stuffed shirt of formality. Well, Channel 4 would wouldn’t it? This is, after all, the home of The Alternative Queens Speech every Christmas. And if you’re more interested in looking at twentieth century history presented in a moviestarstudded dramatisation (rather than a televisionstar making present day history) take note of A Very English Scandal. Written by Russell T Davies, starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw, it is the telling of the scandal that rocked Britain in the 1960s, when homosexuality was illegal and ambitious politician Jeremy Thorpe embarked upon an affair young stable hand Norman Scott. With this calibre of history, cast, and writer – you know it makes sense to tune in.

sst! Think you know all about the history of Brighton & Hove? So, you’ve gone on the Ghost Walk, taken the Notorious Women walking tour, and took a guided walk around the Royal Pavilion when the family were visiting. But there’s more... This month LatestTV started filming the brand new local history quiz series Our Town, packed full of facts big and small, and with more than a few revelations sprung on the guests. As the city the Prince Regent chose as his partybase, you know absolutely anything could turn up. The format is simple: Andy Garth – proprietor of Brighton & Hove Stuff on Western Road, keeper of the Argus Archives (dating back from the 1920s) and regular Latest columnist steps up as host of the proceedings. A regular mine of Brighton & Hove anecdotes, stories and fun facts, he’ll be keeping the players on their toes!

“ As the city the Prince Regent chose

as his partybase, you know absolutely anything could turn up ” Andy is joined by four different guests for each show, each of which bring an item from the city’s past with them – which could be anything from a piece of Madeira Terrace to a classic joke of Max Miller’s. Points are given for being informative, funny, macabre or just plain captivating about our town's quaint and murky past. Expect short films having a nosey around the likes of the back passageways of the Clocktower, the Aquarium and inside Kemptown Tunnel, as well as newspaper headlines uncovering scandals and the downright absurd. Plus the family histories of the guests come under scrutiny too – Our Town is not afraid to get extremely up close and personal. Keep an eye out in our LatestTV listings in June for the first episode of Our Town, and the inside scoop on forgotten buildings, bygone sayings, and what might have surprisingly endured.
