Becoming a culture vulture
T
his month has been all about the shows. We’ve been reviewing theatre, comedy, music, dance, walking tours... I’ve been educated in the dramatic arts and the workings of the human mind, seen a flashing roller disco cross the road at night en mass and discovered new venues in hidden away spots where I laughed suspiciously hard at standup confessing being a vampire fiction fan. Some of it’s been written up by our reviewers (from both sides of the magazine – don’t miss BrightonsFinest’s writeups of The Great Escape), and some of it will simply be magic memories in my mind. It’s not all over yet though. With the Brighton Fringe still running shows up to and including this Sunday, I’ve still got a few more experiences to clock up, as well as the smooth transition from Fringe and Festival shows in Brighton to the Edinburgh Fringe preview season. This has already started, but will continue at comedyloving venues like Komedia, the Caroline of Brunswick, Junkyard Dogs and more around the city play host to big and small names, whittling down their babies (jokes) in the hope of making their dream (acclaimed show) come true. There’s also an explosion of theatre, opera, and musical theatre happening across the county, as the likes of Chichester, Glyndebourne, and Worthing start their fresh seasons filled with the most remarkable talent and ideas (see p14). What I’m trying to say is, if your culturelovin’ spot has been tempted by the recent cornucopia of treats, it doesn’t have to stop now. Keep your diary full and your mind open. Enjoy.

HARRINGTONS HELP Bringing a personal service into a professional environment Are you thinking about purchasing an investment property? We offer a free hour of advice for landlords looking at buying a rental property. It is vital to speak with us prior to making an offer on a purchase to ensure that the property you are buying is in fact a good investment. We often have landlords come to us once their sale has completed expecting an unachievable rent and little understanding of the rental market.

business. Although we pride ourselves in our ability to let and manage student properties we deal with a wide variety of properties ranging from small studio flats to large luxury homes. What is the benefit from working with an independent agent? We find it is not only landlords who prefer to receive a personal service tailored to their needs but we also have great relationships with our long term tenants, who often look to find their next property through us as well, helping us guarantee landlords great quality tenants. We are a very efficient team providing a specialist level of service to ensure your investment is looked after.
Is your tenant in arrears? We are proud to say that we have no tenants in arrears and we believe this comes down to the fact we are a guarantorbased agency, working closely with tenants and guarantors to ensure rental payments are on time.
How do Harringtons compare to a corporate agent? Whilst we are a small team in comparison to a large corporate company, our office is run in such a way to ensure our service is never jeopardised. We only have specialist teams working in the department they are experienced and passionate about. We are confident that we can match and improve on any service you have received from a larger agent whilst giving that personal touch.
Are Harringtons a studentonly letting agent? No. We can be perceived to be a studentonly agent and this is not the case, in fact our student portfolio is a small part of our

NOW & THEN Andy Garth: Random Items
H
ad a great response from last week’s column with regards to our Auction and a very successful sale it was too. Things that sold well ranged from Hippodrome programmes, maps, and the most random of items like paperweights and tram accident books.
“ I think they were
originally based at York Place in Brighton... but the photo was taken in a large garden or play area ”
So on the ‘Random’ subject, this week I have included photos of some items that have already been earmarked for our next sale on Tuesday 31 July.
1
The first picture is a school photo from the late 1920s/early 1930s and on the back it says ‘Varndean?’. I think they were originally based at York Place in Brighton... but the photo was taken in a large garden or play area on the corner of Pevensey Road and Fairlight Place. In the second photo I have tried to enlarge the road sign in the corner, which is attached to Fairlight School in Fairlight Place (anyone with any more info, I would love to hear from you). The next picture is a partused pack of tickets for the West Pier Concert Hall in the early to mid 1960s for the ‘Olde Tyme’ Musical, with a table seat costing 6/6 (32 and a half pence in new money). Bargain! The last item shown is a scale model of the old Hove Railway Signal Box. Don’t ask how, what or where as I don’t know but I think you will all agree – how very random!

L
ate in 2017 I was reunited with an old favourite here in Brighton. For many years I ate at Donatello regularly, it was smart, it was tasty and it was brilliant value. Few would be able to deny that Donatello had become the city’s favourite family restaurant. Add to that the continued commitment of the Addis family to local arts, sports and charities and their success is so well deserved. So when I went along late last year to an excellent wine tasting I was nudged into revisiting for dinner, and since I have been along a few times. The city has become famous for its burgeoning gastronomic scene, that is true, but what to do when you simply want a well cooked and well served meal without going crazy pricewise. Last week, with the festival in full flight, Mr L and I needed a bit to eat between an afternoon show and an evening performance. I suggested Donatello and Mr L agreed that it fitted the bill – in every sense. We chose to eat from the three course menu at around £21, which pretty much means dining a la carte. Mr L started with calamari, a generous portion that disappeared with speed. I chose mussels and I have to say they were as good as mussels get, plump and fresh, simply cooked in white wine and onion and plentiful too, especially as a first course. We both chose saltimbocca as our main and this was again good and generous, tender veal, salty ham and lashings of sage infused sauce, perhaps just a touch too much sauce to be honest. And with it mixed vegetables and creamy mashed potatoes, very yummy. I was pretty stuffed by this point and certainly enjoying a bottle of verdicchio that was not only delicious but very sensibly priced. I should have stopped but who can resist an icecream sundae on a sunny Saturday. Mine was crammed with amarettosoaked amaretti biscuits, topped with vanilla icecream and lashings of whipped cream, – heart stoppinglyy delicious as was Mr L’s with boozeinfused cherries. Service was immaculate despite the place being rammed with families, dating couples, groups of friends and of course hen parties (who I think were all sent upstairs into one pre wedding part area leaving us in relative peace). Good food, sensible prices and well worthy of its place on the city’s food scene.

s brighton Festival 2018 draws to a close and Brighton Fringe has just a few more days to go it’s good to take a look across the county to see what theatrical delights are still to come. Over in Chichester their festival has already started. This summerlong season is always a feast of great new productions and brilliant revivals, and their ability to stage great musicals is perhaps second to none with most ending up transferring to the West End for long runs. This year that is likely to be Me And My Girl starring Matt Lucas in the cheeky leading role. Before that a surefire night of great theatre is bound to be The Chalk Garden starring the wonderful Penelope Keith. For full details of the full season go to cut.org.uk Over in Glyndebourne their summer festival opened with Madama Butterfly and Der Rosenkavalier and continues with productions of Giuliani Cesare, Pélleas et Mélisande, Saul and Vanessa. Their production of Saul, this year revived, is a spectacular of immense proportions that sees this worldfamous company at their very best, truly unmissable. And

JOSEPH MORPURGO 2015 Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee, threetime 2016 Chortle Award winner and BBC Radio 4 star Joseph Morpurgo presents Hammerhead – the Q&A after his boundarysmashing fictitious show about Frankenstein. He speaks with Victoria Nangle about this and more I love the idea of the show. How do you get from Frankenstein to Hammerhead as a title? Well I mean you'll have to see it to find out. The title gets across a couple of different elements of the show, and hopefully the aggregate effect when you leave is like you'll be: "Oh, I kind of understand what might be happening there!" Does it help to have a working knowledge of the Mary Shelley text? No, not at all. Frankenstein became the story that the show is about for a couple of reasons. One is that it's a story that everyone has some handle on, even if all they do know is what the monster is you've got enough of a handle to appreciate the show. But if you know the text and you know the original story well there'll be lots of implicit and explicit references to things that you'll kind of enjoy. But it's by no means a prerequisite. And of course the show itself, without giving too much away, is kind of an adaptation of Frankenstein. In the sense that Frankenstein the book is about this young over ambitious creative, this scientist, who tries to make something lifechanging – worldchanging – and ends up creating this awful monster that destroys him. And there are some parallels with my story which is about this over ambitious performer who tries to make this kind of world changing piece of work that, as you'll discover over the course of the show, maybe hasn't gone quite as well as he thinks it has. Are there any actors that you specifically had in mind when you created this character? 10 | LATEST
No, not especially. The fun of it for me was just me thinking what's the maddest show I could make? What's the most over ambitious, zeitgeist
reason I don't think it's especially viable. I mean what would their motive be? The show is nine hours long, it's got 85 different characters in
“ We haven't Fleetwood Mac'd yet
and all fallen out or started sleeping with each other ” busting show I could possibly make? And because in this postshow Q&A, we look at it from the margins, it means that I could be as imaginative as I wanted to be because the show wasn't actually getting made. I think the character really spilled out of me developing this nonexistent impossible show. Would you ever consider trying to create the show itself, possibly as a follow on? I think the budget to do it would require the GDP of a small African nation (laughs). So unless there's a kind of sinister benefactor who really wants to make it happen for some bizarre
it, it's got seven breeds of livestock – who would make this happen? With yourself and Rachel Parris (The Mash Report) coming out of Austentatious (the Jane Austenbased improv show), it seems to be a very good base. Would you consider having a rolling cast? I mean, we're more like a band really. We set the group up – there's eight of us in it now – we set up with six of us, some of whom we knew each other from uni and some of whom we met in London. And then we kind of added a few extra friends and close confidantes as we went.
You kind of touch on it – it's got so many brilliant people in it. It's so exciting, I think, for all of us. We all started when we were nobodies, as it were. And now there's people like Cariad Lloyd who's been in Peep Show and done a million things – QI, Have I Got News For You etcetera; Rachel Parris who obviously is super talented and has had this incredible moment recently; Andrew Hunter Murray, who does the QI podcast No Such Thing As A Fish which is inordinately successful. I think he's selling out the Sydney Opera House with that next month. Does it become more logistically difficult with the success that's coming to all of you? Yeah, I mean we have to manage each other's schedules and that's why we have a cast of eight but do shows with five or six. It gives us that little bit of wriggle room to see who's available. Everyone's getting busier and busier. But we still really enjoy doing it. I mean, maybe that's why it's not like a band. We haven't Fleetwood Mac'd yet and all fallen out or started sleeping with each other, so it's still really fun to just get in a room with those guys. So what's next for you? So next for me – heading off on tour with Hammerhead and Austentatious. And then I'm just kind of working up a few things behind the scenes. Various different broadcasts, ideas, and – as ever – slowly nudging towards what might be the next show. So yes, stuff's cooking but it's all under wraps for the moment. Joseph Morpurgo: Hammerhead, The Old Market, Wednesday 30 May, 8pm; Thursday 31 May – 2 June, 9.45pm, £12.50/10

The myth of history
Extra! Extra! From Latest TV news
B
ritish history has long been the subject or films and stories. Books celebrate tales of British ‘pluck’ in Whisky Galore, and history crosses over into myth with Mutiny On The Bounty. British soldiers climb out of the trenches on Christmas Day to play football with the Germans, and Britannia ruled the waves with the sun supposedly never setting on the British Empire, such was the expanse of time zones it covered. How EXACTLY we acquired these lands was shushed away. Did you know that there’s a museum in Cuba documenting one small part of Britain’s slave trade? Seems it was only shushed in our own living rooms. Around the world, people are challenging how nations deal with the darker side of their history, including involvement with slavery, racism or colonialism. And those people include writer and journalist Afua Hirsch.
“ British soldiers climb out of the
trenches on Christmas Day to play football with the Germans ”
In America they’re fighting over statues, and Afua is asking if we should really still be revering Winston Churchill in the way that we do. He may have had a good quip for a haughty woman, and been at the helm during WWII, but his views on race left a lot to be desired. And what about Horatio Nelson’s proslavery ideas? But saying we should even take another look at figures mostly seen as icons of national pride is not an easy path. In The Battle For Britain’s Heroes Afua presents the charges against some of the biggest names in British history, visiting Germany to see if we can learn from how they have addressed their past, and speaking to both sides of the battle – including, from the traditionalists’ corner, a certain Mr Jacob ReesMogg. Will we move forward historically in a more responsible manner? One man who could be trusted never to sugarcoat or flinch away from the distasteful sides of history is Frankie Boyle, back this week with a new series of his New World Order. Every story is written from its teller’s perspective, but with eyes like his on the narrative hopefully we’ll have engaging stories that keep the whole truth front and centre. The Battle For Britain’s Heroes, Tuesday, Channel 4, 9pm Frankie Boyle’s New World Order, Friday, BBC2, 10pm Frankie Boyles New World Order
O
ne of the joys and privileges of Local TV news, is the chance for Latest TV's multiskilled crew to film behind the scenes at so many locations in the city, and to find out stories before they become, well, news! Every day, Latest TV News broadcasts three times per day (twice during prime time at 6pm and 8.30pm) to share what's happening with viewers from Brighton, Hove, Worthing and as far as South Chichester. Latest TV reaches 400,000 viewers and want to share what's relevant to all, so that means news for young and old, all political persuasions from leftwing to right, all interests, from arts to sports to science, and also the quirky and fun that appeals to a large number of you. Guy Lloyd is the host of Latest TV News and this month he has been broadcasting from The Warren, the popular Fringe venue that has hosted some eyeopening shows. Next month Latest TV will be broadcasting from another star location in the city – Brighton Palace Pier. Each day, the news includes interviews and views as well as short films filmed from in and around the city.
“ Next month Latest TV will be broad
casting from another star location in the city. Brighton Palace Pier ”
Last week Latest TV popped over to the Royal Pavilion for a tour of their historic gardens. The Gardens are on a Historic England Heritage At Risk Register and the Royal Pavilion are appealing to the public to get involved in their consultation to determine what can be done to save the Gardens from losing their listed status. There are so many rare and beautiful plants in the garden, mainly tended by the one full time gardener whose care and attention of this fragile and complex landscape needs to be applauded. Recently Latest TV filmed from the Amex stadium, where the turf had all been ploughed resembling a crime scene. This was quite fitting as Peter James launched his new crime thriller Dead If You Don't from the stadium where the crime in the novel starts. Chief Constable Giles York paid tribute to Peter's impeccable research for all his Roy Grace novels based in the city. Another behind the scenes location for Latest TV news was at the Step Back In Time auction, where local history buff, Andy Garth worked with postcard impressario, Robert Jeeves to showcase and sell some beautiful and unusual ephemera, books and pictures from Brighton's past. So all in all, a nosey week for the local TV crew. If you have a story you would like to share email news@thelatest.co.uk and one of the Latest journalists will be there ahead of the rest!
