Small change
I
t’s all about change. The weather has turned, and as much as so many people like to mutter about how our Summer is one afternoon a year (and that’ll be the afternoon you have to wait in for a gas meter reading) toes are being dipped in the sea, picnics made, outdoor festivals set up, and plans being made. It’s the plans that are being made that interest me. In the sunshine anything seems possible. Like Passenger’s outdoor busking set last week (see Brightonsfinest). One of the joys of this weather is being able to get out onto the Downs and find those views that just stretch out to a far horizon filled with nature and stripped of city strife. It’s also very interesting to see that Wired Sussex’s Talent2018 job fair is back at the Brighton Dome after last year’s inaugural success. We truly are a mighty digital city, but that doesn’t mean we have to stay with one project. With ideas buzzing and opportunities knocking, this might present just the occupational Spring clean you’ve been after. There are treats to help tempt yourself awake after a lengthy hibernation – there’s a Weasley brother coming to the Theatre Royal (p5)! How often does that happen? Plus delights nearby, like satirist, comedian and broadsheet columnist Mark Steel bringing his new shows to Worthing (p7), and if you’ve ever fancied living near a castle, the stunning new builds in Lewes (p11). Time for a change. Big or small. It’s up to you.

THE CASE OF THE FRIGHTENED LADY
‘A masterpiece of chilling stage noir. Not to be missed’ The Observer
O
liver Phelps, best known for playing George Weasley in the Harry Potter films, talks to us about swapping magic for murder as he makes his stage debut in The Case Of The Frightened Lady. The show heads to Theatre Royal Brighton from Monday 25 – Saturday 30 June. What can you tell me about The Case Of The Frightened Lady? The Case Of The Frightened Lady is a thrilling whodunnit set in the 1930s, based on an Edgar Wallace novel. The police are called to an old manor house to investigate a murder. I love that aristocratic era in which it’s set. I play a young detective who’s very vigilant. He’s switched on and always taking notes. And he’s always watching what his superior officer, Detective Tanner, is doing because he’s trying to learn from him.
“ When I read the script, it just kept me guessing right to the end. That is the sign of a great story ”
Why did you want to be part of this show? When I read the script, it just kept me guessing right to the end. That is the sign of a great story. There’s nothing more boring than going to see a whodunnit and realising who did it early on. This play certainly doesn’t give you that. Your mind changes throughout the show as to who has committed the crime. This is your professional stage debut. How are you feeling about performing live theatre? You’re right, it’s something I’ve not done before, which I’m really excited to be able to try. The way I see it, if you want to be taken seriously, you’ve got to be able to do theatre. I’m lucky, because the majority of the cast have already performed the show lots on tour. Joining the company, I thought it might be a ‘first day of school’ situation, but they were all brilliant. I know I need to prove that I can do it live in a theatre, but I love that sink or swim challenge and I’m sure I’ll find out there’s no better place to sink or swim than on the stage. Looking back on it now, how was the experience of starring in the Harry Potter films? It’s only when you look back that you realise it really was huge. It still is. When you’re so close to it, you don’t understand the size. You think every film has a £120 million budget. I’ve since learned that isn’t the case. At the first premiere Robbie Coltrane said to us: “Guys, this is like having a Rolls Royce for your first car.” At the time I didn’t understand what he meant. I now understand it a lot more. My brother and I have travelled a lot with Harry Potter: The Exhibition. It’s amazing to see people who came to that who weren’t even born when the films came out but know everything about them. When you’re filming, you don’t realise you’re part of something that has that impact. Are there any moments from that time that really stand out? It was pretty terrifying when Barak Obama’s family came for lunch in the Great Hall and the secret service were on the roof with their rifles. You needed to have your staff pass that day. And when we had the last premiere in London. It was full of thousands of people who just wanted to see us. Some of them had queued outside for days on end to watch people go into a cinema to watch a film that they wouldn’t see for another fortnight. It’s a pretty hard concept to get your head around. How do you feel about living the touring life with this production? When I was filming the Harry Potter movies, I virtually lived in a hotel room for nine months of the year, so I know how it can be. You can just sit down and do nothing the whole time. It’s the worst when someone asks, “What did you do?” and you say, “I don’t know,” which I have been guilty of doing before. So I’m really looking forward to visiting parts of the country I haven’t seen before. And I’m taking my golf clubs and my gym bag. I’ve already been exploring places to play golf. Don’t miss this new chilling production from ‘the king of the detective thriller’ Edgar Wallace. ou probably think that I harp on about the brilliance of our local restaurant scene, I do too. But a recent announcement has certainly rubber stamped the idea that our city is up there when it comes to its gastronomic offering. In the Square Meal restaurant awards Brighton scoops 9 per cent of that prestigious list. Brighton’s burgeoning restaurant scene has been lauded by many as the food lovers’ destination for several years now, with a host of fantastic independent venues creating that buzz. And it is very much down to the presence of so many fantastic independent restaurants rather than the proliferation of high street chains, not that they are all bad of course. At the forefront of that swell has been Michael Bremner, Great British Menu winner and owner of two of the city’s most popular restaurants 64 Degrees and Murmur. Now his flagship 64 Degrees, has won the accolade of being voted number 7 in the top 100, only one place behind Tom Kerridge at the The Hand & Flowers in Marlow and impressively one ahead of the eponymous Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham. But the acclaim goes on for the city’s finest with a further eight restaurants being named in that top 100:

MARK STEEL The critically acclaimed comedian, newspaper columnist, and BBC Radio 4 regular talks about hitting the road with his new show Every Little Thing’s Gonna Be Alright, discussing the political climate, his marriage breakdown, and other aspects that he’s sure will turn out fine Mark Steel is remarkably chipper when he meets to talk about his new show, even though it’s about a miserable period in his life when Donald Trump won the White House, Nigel Farage seemed to be running Britain, and to cheer him up his wife decided to leave him. But as the show’s title, Every Little Thing’s Gonna Be Alright, suggests, the comic isn’t a man to be defeated by what life throws at him on either a personal or political level; his conversation is punctuated by laughter, and he talks about his optimism for the future. Because Mark is an avowed Leftwinger who writes a political column in The Independent, he Mark is sometimes seen as a political comic, but he demurs. “I’ve got loads of burning issues to talk about on stage, but the first thing you start with is: What are the things I think are funny? “There’s great comedy in things not turning out as you expect. For example, regardless of your politics, you have to be amused that someone so magnificently confident calls an unnecessary election and mucks it up. Now Theresa May can’t even make a speech at her own conference without spluttering like a really useless kid in a Nativity play. And they [the Conservative government] don’t know what they’re doing from one day to the next. That’s funny, isn’t it?” The show also charts his wife of 11 years divorcing him. They underwent “mediation” to divide their financial assets and Mark vents his spleen. “The way that marriage, or rather divorce, is organised in this country is mad. You’re better off under some sort of Sharia system,” and then hoots with laughter at the
thought. Some of his wife’s grounds for divorce lend themselves to comedy: he never cut the privet hedge (not a euphemism); he hadn’t trained the dog; he went on tour (he is a comic after all); and he is obsessed with sport. So is he?
know it’ll make an audience laugh because they recognise the truth of it.” The show is not about him putting his side of things. “That would be unfair. It’s about the process of what happens when a marriage goes wrong. It seemed idyllic, our
“ If you think the railways ought to be
run for the people who use them rather than making a failed balloonist extremely rich, this is an exciting time ” “Guilty as charged,” Mark admits. “There was one night I said, “I’m coming up to bed in a minute, but then realised, ooh the fencing is on.” He deadpans in his defence: “It wasn’t just any old tournament, it was a regional final – Hungary versus Italy.” I ask if everything is material for a show. “No, that makes it sound mercenary. But everything in life has a funny side to it. It doesn’t cheer you up or make you laugh, but you
suburban life living just outside Brighton, and then this happened; someone’s furious with you and everything falls apart.” He melds the personal and the political in the show. “In mediation, everything is brought down to the cost of things. It encourages people to be unpleasant and greedy, and it struck me that it’s the same philosophy that’s driven the world over the past few decades. So education, libraries, health and social care all have to have a financial worth;
everything is reduced to whether it has a value that can be worked out on a calculator. “The kind of people who say, ‘Why should I pay for a fire brigade when I’m not on fire?’ or ‘Why should I pay for someone else’s dialysis if they can’t be bothered to keep their kidneys scrubbed?’; have had everything their own way for decades. “But if you think the railways ought to be run for the people who use them rather than making a failed balloonist extremely rich, this is an exciting time. Ideas that have been on the back burner for 30 years are now on the agenda. Young people really do believe that we should look after the old and sick, and I think that’s optimistic and encouraging. “I’m not trying to win people around, but I think the demonisation of Jeremy Corbyn is so mental that it’s funny – I struggle to come up with worse things in the show than the rightwing press say about him, like he’s going to introduce womenonly gravity, so men are forced to float, or something.” Some of his views may surprise you – “I don’t condemn people who voted for Brexit, as some do. I don’t think they’re all idiots and I can see why they came to that conclusion” – and even admits to a certain regard for the Queen after learning of her disagreement with Margaret Thatcher over apartheid. “I don’t wish ill on anyone, but Philip’s not going to go on for ever, is he?” he says with a grin. “And if she needs a shoulder to cry on...” Mark Steel: Every Little Thing’s Gonna Be Alright, Royal Hippodrome Theatre, Eastbourne, Wednesday 30 May, 8pm; Friday 15 June, 8pm, £16, royalhippodrome.com

EAGERLY AWAITED FRIARS DEVELOPMENT SET FOR LAUNCH! Oakley Property are very excited to announce the opening of the show home at the eagerly awaited Friars development in Lewes on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 June
T
he Friars is a unique development comprising of 24 luxury apartments. There are traditional one and two bedroom properties but the majority are Manhattan style apartments. The building is set across four floors with a lift, video phone entry systems and parking is also available. David Beaken, a Director at Oakley New Homes, commented: “I am so pleased we can finally launch The Friars and get people in to view. Being such a prominent building in the town we have had people asking about it for months. There has been so much excitement around the launch, we have over 200 people who have registered their interest. I think the question we have be asked most is what is a Manhattan Style Apartment? Put simply it is a cross between a traditional one bedroom apartment and a studio. Open plan living space with a separate sleeping area. It’s not quite a bedroom as there aren’t windows in the rooms but there are fitted cupboards and the sleeping areas are separated by smoked glass screens which means there will be natural light coming in from the hallways. You find them a lot in major cities where open living is popular, especially New York, hence the name”. The Friars is perfectly positioned in the middle of Lewes just off the historic Cliffe High Street. The train station is less than
500 meters away with regular trains going to Brighton in 16 minutes, London Victoria in 65 minutes, Gatwick in 31 minutes and Haywards Heath in 16 minutes. The Bus Station is less than 200 meters away with services to Brighton, Ringmer, Uckfield, Seaford and beyond. Regarding specification the kitchens are contemporary matt white handleless units with Silestone quartz worktops, glass

splash backs and soft close doors and drawers. There are integrated Siemens and Neff appliances to include full size Siemens combination oven with builtin microwave, induction hob, Elica extractor, dishwasher and fridge or fridge/freezer. Under mounted Blanco Silgranit sink and LED under cabinet lighting. All apartments feature separate utility cupboards with freestanding Neff washer/dryer. Luxury walkin shower rooms and bathrooms designed by Abacus featuring; Italian porcelain tiles to walls and floors and contemporary white sanitary ware.
Storage to include mirrored recessed bathroom cabinets, wall mounted vanity units and recessed shelf. Polished chrome fittings, shaver sockets throughout and fixed head rainstyle shower with separate hand held shower and chrome finished towel rail. There is parking available to be purchased with each apartment priced at £10,000 per space. David Beaken commented “Parking is a big thing for a lot of people but not everyone wants it. Early interest is showing that The Friars is of particular interest to people downsizing and commuters, being so central some people are saying they don’t particularly need parking and don’t want to pay a premium for it. The simplest thing was just to give people the choice. The site is registered for Help To Buy so we also expect The Friars to be very popular with first time buyers. There is a 10 year Advantage New Home warranty to give new home owners extra peace of mind.” Prices start from £199,950 for the Manhattan Studios, £265,000 for one bedroom apartments and from £335,000 for the 2 bedrooms. The Launch event will be on Saturday 16 June 10am – 3pm & Sunday 17 June 11am –1pm. Our expert marketing team created an advert that couldn’t be ignored! Has your agent’s service become too corporate compared to what you are used to? Harringtons are an independent agent. Our only focus is ensuring both landlords and tenants receive expert, quality and transparent service. Not only are Harringtons one of Brighton and Hove’s only specialist letting agents, we also offer a wide variety of services and consistently go the extra mile. Why not call Emma Gretton (01273) 724000 to discuss any of your lettings related queries.

Fed up with your current agent? We are finding that more and more landlords are becoming increasingly concerned with the service they are currently receiving. Whether that be due to their agent being bought out by a larger corporate agent or the fact that their management team are no longer local and run a call centre style department. Harringtons have been an independent agent for 25 years and will remain an independent agent for the next 25 years guaranteeing a consistent, personal and expert service.
Do you know who is looking after your investment? We all prefer speaking with a familiar person opposed to a stranger don’t we? We are a small yet extremely efficient team at Harringtons and we know that our landlords value the fact they can usually speak with the same person who knows them, their property and their tenants.
Can your agent provide advice on all aspects of buying and letting? Harringtons are a specialist letting agent and although do not directly deal with sales have an active acquisition department who often advise current and potential landlords on new purchases, sales and development of current portfolios. We are here to ensure your investment is safe and maximised to its full potential and any new investment decisions are wise ones. It is vital to speak to a letting agent before purchasing a buy to let property, speak to the experts before making one of the biggest decisions you may ever make.
Does your agent appreciate your specific needs? We often find landlords come to us seeking a tailor made service whereas other agents may not have been able to accommodate their wishes. We work with landlords who have just one rental property and are emotionally connected to that property and like to remain involved and we also deal with landlords who have multiple properties who do not wish to have any involvement but trust us to make decisions with their best interest in mind. We are able to cater to each landlords individual needs and create a service personal to you.

OF THE REST
SNEAK PEEKS
Badgers and rabbits and moles – oh my!
A little bit country...
W
ho hasn’t been talking about the weather lately? If you’ve got a front porch, or even a spider plant – let alone a garden – you’ll notice our greenery hasn’t known which way to turn. Dry thunder storms, electricity in the air, humid heat, sudden downpours... this can only mean one thing – Spring! While our skies go haywire and hayfever suddenly becomes a thing again, small furry creatures come out of hiding to Chris Packham’s glee, and giant spiders suddenly turn up in the country’s baths to the rest of our collective horror.
“ It’s ambitious, but why should you be anything else when you’re the Queen? ”
Springwatch started last week, returning with veteran favourites, the aforementioned Packham as well as Michaela Strachan. Gillian Burke is the newby of the team, filling in the gap left by Martin HughesGames (really his name, not a PE master at Hogwarts despite natural logic). They’re back at the National Trust’s Sherborne Park Estate, in the heart of the Cotswolds, as well as serving up films of the countryside’s Spring awakenings from across the UK. Some may scoff, but there really is something very watchable about families of voles, sparrows and badgers welcoming their little ones into the world, struggling against the elements, and the privilege to watch this familial tenderness survive against all odds. As a part of the clutter of programmes marking the 65th anniversary of Her Majesty’s coronation comes The Queen’s Green Planet, reminding us that it’s Spring all over the world. Queen Elizabeth II is looking to create something that will be a part of her lasting legacy, creating a network of national forest parks from each of the 53 Commonwealth nations, called the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy. It’s ambitious, but why should you be anything else when you’re the Queen? This follows her family and staff as the project grows over the next few months. For many, though, the only greenery they’ll have an interest in this week will be the pitch when England play Costa Rica on Thursday. Watch it then, or just keep your windows open while you’re enjoying your own green space, keeping score via the cheers ricocheting through the streets. It’s your call. Springwatch; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; BBC2, 8pm The Queen's Green Planet; Tuesday; ITV1, 9pm International Football: England v Costa Rica; Thursday; ITV1; 7.30pm

t’s known that you can be ‘a little bit country’ wherever you come from, but it’s an acknowledged fact that the home of country music is Nashville. Britain’s Got Talent semifinalist sing/songwriter Rosie O’Sullivan wowed audiences back in 2013 and hasn’t stopped since, but Nashville has continued to beckon. And she sure as darnedest is going to answer when it calls.
“ She’s in seventh heaven in the
Tennessee capital with its vibrant buzzing scene ” To Nashville And Back is Latest TV’s exclusive access to Rosie’s all out trip to crack the US market. Rosie has gone through a huge transformation since her first television appearance after losing 17 stone in weight, and is ready to throw herself into this incredible adventure a full – as they say on the talent shows – 100 per cent. Having carved out a successful music career this side of the pond, she’s in seventh heaven in the Tennessee capital with its vibrant buzzing scene. But can she break through? Will she get to work with new band Levon? Rehearse at the legendary Ocean Way Studios? Catch a show at the musicians’ venue Bluebird Cafe? Or possibly even get a glimpse of the iconic Willie Nelson? You’ll have to join presenter Monica Price as she chronicles Rosie’s journey to find out. To Nashville And Back screens next Tuesday and throughout next week. Check your listings in each weekly edition of Latest to find a time that suits you.
