he sun is out! Alright, it might not be out at the precise time you’re reading this but it’s certainly been shining all the more recently and letting us know that this is our Summer, it’s here, and maybe we might want to account for it in our plans. Which is just as well as all manner of interesting outside events are kicking off – not least the launch of Luna Beach Cinema. Opening ceremony this Thursday kicks off at 3pm, followed by Russia vs Saudi Arabia at 4pm up on the big screen, and then a screening of Jaws at 8pm – poking especial fun at the close proximity of that great wide open sea space nearby. Tickets to this special event are free (except for the booking fee), beckoning you down to try before you buy for the rest of the season’s shows encompassing football, film and the finer racquets of Wimbledon. The Brighton Open Air Theatre’s season is looking equally tempting, with The Crucible on the horizon – some might say aptly timed considering it’s metaphor for the McCarthyism Communist witch hunts of the 1950s, and a certain division in current politics. Clever stuff. (p9) And of course we are surrounded by the majesty that is the Downs. The Campaign to fix the South Downs Way trail has made most excellent progress, keeping our pathways in good stead for us to wander through the wide open spaces as the sun shines down and the sea air blows in. (p7) So enjoy the great outside and all it has to offer – and don’t forget your sun lotion, umbrella, and water bottle. Sorted.

rand new stage musical Summer Holiday is set to tour the UK this summer, with the famous red double decker bus making its stop at Theatre Royal Brighton from Tuesday 17 – Saturday 21 July. W
ith the sun beating down where better to dine than a restaurant with outside tables? Not that I wanted to sit in blazing sun, but it does mean that inside tends to be cool and quiet. Grow 40 offers such a space and, with a new chef, an exciting new menu. Do not fear, there are plenty of their old favourites but in addition a much simpler and sleeker a la carte offering. I lured Mr L along, not that he takes much luring, and we started with a glass of champagne, it’s one of their new initiatives to champion a massive list of sparkling French wines. The menu is limited to five dishes at start, middle and end, a change I admire. I don’t need five pages to choose from and I do like to know that what is offered is cooked to order. Mr L started with asparagus with butter, pea, egg and cress, a classic combination that he declared delightful. I could not resist pigeon, breast slices, perfectly cooked leg meat in a cigarshaped fine pastry, a spelt risotto, beetroot and cherry gel. Each part as good as the next and all beautifully presented. And spelt risotto… who would have thought? Mr L moved on to a lamb dish that included loin, shoulder and belly that came with the classic combo of lettuce and peas. It looked divine and he ate it with relish but did feel that a potato would not have gone amiss. My dish of halibut was sensational and flavoured delicately with lemongrass. I chose it because I like halibut but also because it included cockles and as a Lancashire lad cockles are my heritage. I am pleased to say that unlike many restaurants where the word cockles means a meagre scattering, here they came in abundance, not only on the dish, but laced through the immaculate daube of risotto on the side, I was not carb shy for sure and a woofed it down. The desserts on offer are simply listed, one strawberry, one banana, one milk and one cherry with a cheese option as well. Mr L chose cherry, a clafoutis made with ground almond and a separate cherry soup with marscpone. It was big and very yummy and I was filled with envy. I chose banana which was almost a trifle of cake peanuts and toffee with a banana milkshake on the side. It was very good but dare I say it, too big. I like generous but it was out of kilter with the finesse of the rest of our dishes. Service is immaculate, old school polite but friendly too, and very French. What’s not to love?
A second venue for this brilliant Indian restaurant is now open here in Brighton. Chaula and her team breathe fresh air into the idea of Indian food with authentic recipes served in stylish surroundings. PROJECT BRIGHTON Campaign to fix broken South Downs Way trail reaches 60 per cent of target
A
campaign to raise £120,000 to carry out muchneeded improvements on the South Downs Way has reached more than 60 per cent of its target with six months, and the main summer walking season, still to go. More than £75,000 has been donated to ‘Mend our Way’, a campaign led by the South Downs National Park Trust, asking people who’ve enjoyed the South Downs Way to support significant repair work on four broken sections of the national trail. Andy Gattiker, who manages the South Downs Way, said: “Thank you so much, we are blown away by your generosity! The cold, wet winter has taken its toll on the damaged sections but because of your love for the South Downs Way we’re more than 60 per cent towards our target – and being able to carry out these much needed improvements.
“ We’re looking forward to seeing more people enjoying walking, cycling or riding the trail ”
“With the warmer weather and bank holidays ahead we’re looking forward to seeing more people enjoying walking, cycling or riding the trail. It’s an amazing resource and, if you love the South Downs Way, please consider supporting our campaign.” More than 20,000 longdistance walkers, cyclists and riders complete the 160km South Downs Way National Trail every year and many millions more explore a section of it which causes a lot of wear and tear. Existing funding allows the National Park Authority to make most repairs but there are four significant projects which can’t be tackled using existing funds. Each year, as the erosion gets worse, they become harder to fix. The ‘Mend our Way’ campaign is being run by the South Downs National Park Trust, a new charity which works with partners to protect the National Park for future generations. The charity is supported by the National Park Authority who will cover the Trust’s core costs for the first three years, meaning all funds raised can be focused on important projects within the National Park. What needs to be done? • Inglorious mud! Old Winchester Hill is a scheduled ancient monument with an Iron Age Hill Fort, a Bronze Age cemetery and is also a National Nature Reserve. No wonder that it’s one of the most iconic hills in the National Park. But the route up to it becomes a slippery kilometre of bootchurned mud every winter. Being inaccessible to machinery and vehicles makes it a great place to be (when it’s dry) but almost impossible to fix. We need £50,000 to get scrape away the mud and replace the surface with stones. • Remote location seeks sensitive scar repairs. For one of the most remote sites on the South Downs Way Millpond Bottom, between Beacon Hill and Penn Hill, has some impressive scaring. Successive feet, wheels and hooves have more than doubled the width of the chalk track – putting nearby sensitive Scheduled Ancient Monuments at risk. We need £10,000 to safely transport materials to the site, mend the trail and keep walkers on the straight and narrow. • Paying the price of popularity. More than 80,000 people walk the high Plumpton Plain track between Ditchling Beacon and the market town of Lewes every year, and although it’s 200m above the sea the path is flat so surface water is a big problem. At more than 1km long and at least 3m wide, we need £25,000 to repair, strengthen and add drainage so the path can continue to give joy to thousands of people. • Water water everywhere. Hyden Lane near Butser Hill sits on top of the chalk ridge but suffers from a lack of drainage. As large puddles get trapped on the busy track the surface breaks up and becomes muddy. It will take £35,000 to fix 1.6km of the track – replacing the existing surface with new layers and creating a camber to help it drain. ‘Mend our Way’ is part of the national ‘Make a Million’ initiative, run by the British Mountaineering Council, which seeks to raise £1,000,000 for some of the UK’s most treasured trails. his week I would like some help please. The first picture is one of two identical plaques that I recently acquired that come from the iconic West Street Club Sherry’s. It’s about to be demolished and redeveloped and has existed from 1919 1949, and again from 1969the mid 1980s.
“ He tried several times to become an MP but was never to be ” It also features in the novel Brighton Rock and was part of a lot of Brightonians’ youth – good and bad but always fun. My personal memory of it is an early performance from Culture Club before they were famous. I am sure they come from the early period but I would like to be more precise, so if anyone out there has any ideas please

let me know by email at Brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com. The second two pictures are posters from general elections printed in Brighton. The first is from the 1929 election, which in the 100th anniversary of the suffragettes is relevant as it was the first election women from the age of 2129 could vote. The second poster is from 1931 which was promoting the two Labour candidates for Brighton, with one of them being Lewis Cohen who later became Lord Cohen of Brighton. He tried several times to become an MP but was never to be, although he took great pride in taking his seat in the House of Lords in the early 1960s having been a huge influence in the expansion of the town from the 1930s through to the 1960s.I would recommend checking him out as he truly was an exceptional man. These posters only lasted 24 hours in the shop window before they were snapped up, which just proves that there is someone out there for all sorts of

BRIGHTON LIGHTS
STAGE The Crucible
S
ome plays are revived and revived again and again and it is a testament to the power of Arthur Miller’s classic that as once such work it truly stands the test of time. On one level it is a gripping story of witchcraft, hysteria and fear. Of course Miller wrote it as an allegory, reflecting the fear and hysteria that surrounded that Senator Joseph MacCarthy created in the period of American history that became known as The Second Red Scare, a witch hunt for communists that caused upheaval in the USA and particularly in the film and literary world. Identity Theatre Company now present Arthur Miller's blistering and influential play The Crucible at the Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT). Written in the early 1950s in response to the hysteria of MacCarthyism, The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, during the 1692 Witch Trials a time when paranoia, lies and deceit gripped the Puritan towns of New England, tearing communities apart in a search for those involved in supernatural practices and rituals. Miller captured these events in a gripping story that has
certainly earned its status as a modern classic. And what better time to revisit this enduring piece of theatre than in a world riddled with international mistrust, fake news and judgement by social media?
“ A gripping story
of witchcraft, hysteria and fear ”
Following in the footsteps of last year’s BOAT production of Blue Remembered Hills, Identity Theatre promise a physical, site specific retelling of this powerful tale with beautifully drawn characters, displaying the heights of nobility and depths of duplicity. As The Crucible is still often referred to in both English and Drama courses, Identity have made an Educational Resource Pack for The Crucible available to download free via their website. 29, 30, 31 Aug, 1 Sept 2018 Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) Brighton Open Air Theatre, Dyke Road, Brighton BN3 6EH 6pm for 7pm www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/232 834 or via the BOAT website, or on the door.

LATEST TV’S, LATEST SIGNING! A new series kicks off at Latest TV this June
P
resenter, Steve Hopper, has joined the team to bring the World Cup back home to Sussex! “I’ve always loved the game and I’m a bit of a show off,” says Steve, “so being able to combine the two is a dream job for me!” World Cup Latest will air every match day during the tournament held in Russia. “It’s a programme unique to any other broadcaster as this comes from a fan’s perspective of the World Cup. A behindthescenes if you like. Because it’s supporters who really make football what it is.”
“ It’s a programme unique to any other broadcaster as this comes from a fan’s perspective of the World Cup. ”
The programme will also have a local appeal, such as updates on Albion Goalkeeper Mat Ryan and his World Cup journey for Australia. And interviews with Seagull’s fans along with various other fun footballing features. Like many boys, Steve developed an interest in football and his first tournament was none other than Euro 96 when he was just nine years old. “This is where I first discovered which team I wanted to support. I followed Man United for a couple of seasons, as it seemed to be 20 | LATEST
the done thing, but I quickly realised it was international football that sparked my passion.” Throughout Steve’s life, he’s followed England, just like any other club. He’s been to Wembley so many times, he can’t remember the exact number and he watches the club game with a keen eye on England players. Many will recognise Steve from a variety of TV programmes. Locally, he’s worked for a number of radio stations and was once a lecturer of Film at Sussex Downs College. At 17, Steve interviewed former England Captain John Terry and watched England vs Sweden at Euro 2012 with former England player Graeme Le Saux. He was even voted by Carling in an unofficial poll as fifth next likely to take over from Sven as England Manager! Recently he presented a piece on an exclusive tour around Wembley Stadium. Due to his work with a mix of broadcasters and newspapers over the years, this offered him the chance to be involved in football from a media perspective. Steve's weekly newspaper column allowed him to be one of the first to attend Brighton & Hove Albion's Amex Stadium, via the Media Suite. Here, he reported on the very first match. “I can’t wait for this next chapter to begin, for both myself and Latest TV. I hope viewers will enjoy my lighthearted look at World Cup 2018 and find it engaging too. Come on England! (Please!)”. You can catch World Cup Latest at 6.25pm each match day with longer editions on the day after England games at 6.30pm.

OF THE REST A great escape
R
ight before Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D and after a delicious roast, has recently become the sweet spot to round off the weekend nicely. With all of the indulgence of an Easter egg you bought for yourself, but the discipline of finishing off a really good book, is Bake Off: The Professionals – pro patisserie and chocolate chefs sweating it out to step up to the challenges meted out by judges Cherish Finden and Benoit Blin.
“ With all of the indulgence of an
Easter egg you bought for yourself ” With only four more episodes to go, there’s even greater reason to savour every moment. Just like it’s ‘amateur’ counterpart, this Bake Off sets challenges (croissants and Viennoiserie plus romancethemed sugar showpieces this time around), and the standard is high – but disasters happen, risks are taken in the name of pushing boundaries, and you feel for each chef team. In fact, seeing them tag up together feels that little bit more ‘Sunday’, with cooperation ruling and forgiveness at a right clanger of a mistake showing more than a touch of class. Who can forget squished roulade in the fridge or caramel burned fingers? The show must go on, and the spirit of the Blitz (albeit at The Ritz) holds strong. With a winning smile from Liam Charles and witty epithet from Tom Allen too – they’re both sweeties and perfect Sunday evening fodder. Lining up ducks in a row elsewhere for a different kind of tasty summer is The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, with his and co host Angellica Bell turning their attention to the forthcoming summer holidays. It’s live, so you can even get on the old social media and ask him that tricky question about how to avoid a Big Foot in Nebraska – although he’s more likely to be able to answer tough calls on travel insurance and confusions with car hire. With attention called to these topics, as well as where to get the best holiday currency rates, you can sit back by the end and know that you’ve got Summer covered. As well as a craving for profiteroles that came from out of nowhere! The Martin Lewis Money Show Live: Summer Special; Tuesday; ITV1, 8pm Bake Off: The Professionals; Sunday; Channel 4, 8pm
