Comic boom
T
his is one of my favourite times of the year. When the beach is ours during the week, and comedians across the country look for spaces to preview their new shows, laying bare their work in progress process, and naturally gravitate to our city. Brighton has a well earned reputation for having comedy savvy audience. Over the last few decade it has grown to become one of the most supportive and appreciative places in the country for new and respected comedy to flourish. It’s not that I’ve done a clinical survey, but over the years interviewing respected comics they’ve raved about the city to me, the audiences, and the special relationships they have with the clubs. This is why when Michael McIntyre played the Brighton Dome in his first series of Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow he did a secret warm up set the night before at Komedia. And why the likes of Paul Sinha, Nish Kumar, Lucy Porter and Robin Ince return to the comedyloving pub the Caroline Of Brunswick – and Lloyd Langford, Zoe Lyons and Flo & Jo will be found at Komedia, all furiously whittling their preview shows into their true shapes ahead of the Edinburgh Fringe in August. (p8) I also love the amount of home grown enjoyment we can find and point our comic visitors in the direction of, showing we’re not just all about being the most excellent of audiences. Andrew Kay samples the delights of Gusbourne sparkling wines at The Ginger Dog (p6), and then draw out attention to yet another great show coming son to the Brighton Open Air Theatre (p8) – and Andy Garth shares more local history gems (p16). We are the lucky ones.

ROPETACKLE ARTS CENTRE R
opetackle is an awardwinning arts venue on the banks of the River Adur in ShorehambySea. With music, comedy, theatre, talks, family events, exhibitions, and films on their calendar, there really is something for everyone. As a charitable trust staffed almost entirely by volunteers, nothing comes close to the friendly atmosphere, intimate performance space and firstclass programming that makes Ropetackle loved by audiences and performers alike. Where else could you find The Blockheads, Zoe Lyons, a ukulele celebration, puppet shows, book launches, jazz, blues, soul and rock artists, blockbuster films and a Canadian Maritime Folk Festival all in one season?! Often described as unique by visitors, the Ropetackle energy is felt as soon as you step inside the door. The bright and airy café selling healthy homemade soups, sandwiches and light lunches (and lovely cakes!) becomes a fullylicensed bar for concertgoers at night. They stock local and international ales and ciders and excellent wines at highly competitive prices and there are preshow suppers available from local caterers Lesley’s Kitchen at many of the live music events.
“ Often described as unique by visitors,

Ropetackle has long been a supporter of acoustic and roots based music, and in recent years, Canadian folk artists have been a feature on their programme. As a result, one of their trustees, Anne Hodgson, was invited to Prince Edward Island on the eastern side of Canada to participate in Showcase PEI 2017, which celebrates the very best of the area’s music. She has curated a dedicated festival this summer to bring these musicians to the south coast. As Michael Hughes of foremost British folk group The Young ‘Uns says: “Over the past few years, audiences across the UK have been treated to the delightful and innovative music emerging from PEI. These musicians span all genres, from bluegrass to Americana, and blues to electropop. They are making waves across key music LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
markets outside of North America and come highly recommended!” The festival runs from July 31 to August 11. Check out the Ropetackles website for the full details and information about Canadian films. On the bill: Vishten (with support from Hickory Signals) – Tues 31 July | 8pm | £14 The Canadian trio continues to dazzle audiences with their fiery blend of traditional French songs and original instruments, fusing Celtic and Acadian genres with a modern sensibility and rock influence. Their tight harmonies, layer foot percussion, virtuoso acoustics and electric instrumentation create an expansive sound. Gordie MacKeeman & His Rhythm Boys (with support from Purple Shoes Duo) – Weds 1 August | 8pm | £14 Gordie exemplifies the term ‘natural showman’. An ace fiddle player, nicknamed ‘Crazy Legs’ because of his frenetic, loose limbed stepdancing, he just loves to perform. Combine that exuberance and onstage dynamism with the stellar musicianship of comrades His Rhythm Boys and you have an unstoppable roots music force. The East Pointers – Thurs 2 August | 8pm | £14 Beyond their dazzling musicianship and wildly entertaining live shows, there is a reason The East Pointers have connected with audiences right across the globe, making new original roots music the hippest and most vibrant thing going. Irish Mythen – Friday 10 August | 8pm | £12 Mythen is a globetrotting troubadour: an Irishborn, contemporary Canadian folk artist who has been amassing accolades and achievements across several continents over the years. A sonic and emotional experience. Saturday sessions: Celebrating Folk – Saturday 11 August | 12pm to 4pm FREE Come and experience the joy of folk music in our foyer with local musicians. Be inspired, sing along and tap those feet. Bar and café open. Le Vent du Nord – Saturday 11 August | 8pm | £15 standing, £17 seated. A glorious mix of fiddle, guitar, accordion, piano, bass, hurdygurdy and wonderful fourpart harmonies. I
could try to bluff away with that old chestnut that this is a tough job – but someone’s got to do it, but your not fools and I know that you know how much of a privilege this is. Especially when I am invited to join a small group to eat and dine well – and a few weeks ago I had such a privilege. The good people at Butler’s Wine Cellar thought I might enjoy meeting Laura Rhys from Gusbourne wine makers – and at a favourite haunt The Ginger Dog. The thrust of the day was to experience something that few have a chance to do, and that is to taste the base wines that are used to make the final blends that go into their delicious sparkling wines. Fascinating stuff it is too, some of these wines are pretty challenging to the palate, acidic and dark in flavour. It soon became clear how difficult and skilled the process is of blending these wines from both different grapes and different vineyards, to create not only delicious sparkling wines but also consistent wines in their flavour profile, year on year. Finally we got to drink the finished wines with a menu of deliciously seasonal dishes prepared in the Ginger Dog kitchen and once again I was filled with admiration. We started witha black pudding croquette served with a peach ketchup, both great, especially a croquette that was unapologetically packed with black pudding rather than a parsimonious whisper. Our starter of asparagus came with salty lardo and bottarga and lots of lovely brown shrimps, a marriage made in heaven. The main of roast plaice was equally delicious, perfectly trimmed, very important for the full enjoyment of plaice, and with a rich tomato and bonito butter sauce and my first Jersey royals of the season. Summer was definitely a coming in! Dessert of strawberry tart with basil and cucumber granita simply enforced the fact and a little cheese at the finish made the whole a delight. We drank Gusbourne Brut Reserve, Blanc de Blanc 2013, another 2014 vintage, by this time the name becoming a mild blur, a rosé from 2014, and to finish the Pinot Noir from 2016.

PROJECT BRIGHTON Cooks away! Grand Opening of Community Kitchen heralds a ‘healthier, happier city’
T
he cutting of a string of garlic marked the Grand Opening of the new Brighton & Hove Food Partnership Community Kitchen – a fabulous central space in the city where local people can be inspired to cook for health, fun and friendship. Brighton & Hove Food Partnership Director Vic Borrill, together with Calum Munro, People’s Postcode Lottery Senior Community Programmes Officer, undertook the launch honours with the cook's favourite flavouring. It heralded a new era in the history of the 15 yearold Food Partnership. The Partnership has many years’ experience using food to create positive change in people’s lives via its cookery classes, but until now has run its classes from community centres, churches and any other semisuitable space it can find around the city. Food Partnership Vic Borrill said: “After a decade dreaming of a central space tailored to our needs, today is like a dream come true. In this Kitchen our cookery class leaders will have a fully accessible, purposebuilt space and all the equipment they need so we can improve and expand our offering, enabling many more people in Brighton and Hove to learn about food, share food and, above all, to enjoy food. "We know the transformative power that good food can have and we look forward to a healthier, happier city, thanks to the Community Kitchen – and the very many people who helped it happen.” Jamie Oliver The Community Kitchen has been made possible thanks to funding from the Veolia Environmental Trust, Rampion Fund and the players of People's Postcode Lottery, with support from the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation, which funded the conversion of former office space in the Community Base building in Queens Road, Brighton. At the ceremony, People's Postcode Lottery representative Calum Munro handed over a giant cheque for £100,000. Calum Munro said: “I’m delighted to be able to kickstart festivities to celebrate the opening of Brighton & Hove Community LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
Kitchen. It’s great to see the culmination of everyone’s hard work to get the project off the ground and I’m thrilled that players of People’s Postcode Lottery are supporting it.” A further £27,305 to kit out the stateof the art, fully accessible teaching kitchen was raised through crowdfunding. And throughout, an amazing team of talented local firms supported the build: MacConvilles Surveying, Crofton Design, Gyoury Self Partnership, Cheesmur, Brewers, UrbnRok and Claire Potter Design.
“ We know the transformative power that good food can have and we look forward to a healthier, happier city ”
The Kitchen will operate as a social enterprise, offering competitively priced cookery courses from local chefs and food experts at the same time as providing subsidised courses, including Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food Programme. Mandie Turner from Jamie's Ministry of Food said: "We are delighted that, thanks to our partnership with the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership and funding from People's Postcode Lottery, we will be able to teach many more people how to cook from scratch. "Our practical cookery classes aim to make a positive, lasting impact on the nation's health, by sharing the joy of good food! Our evaluation shows that the programme has significant positive effects on dietary behaviour, food choice and cooking confidence. A massive thank you to all People's Postcode Lottery players, for making this possible." Find out more about the Community Kitchen at http://bhfood.org.uk/cookery school/

t is a testament to talent that the works of Oscar Wilde survived his public humiliation, an imprisonment in 1895. Wilde was sentenced to two years hard labour in Reading Gaol for acts of gross indecency with men, a crime that was still punishable with imprisonment until the late 20th century – a fact that might come as a shock to younger readers who have grown up in a far more liberal world where homosexuality is accepted. Rupert Everett’s film of Wilde’s last years, The Happy Prince, has just opened to critical acclaim and shows the depths of humiliation and despair that Wilde was driven to and will no doubt raise, once again, interest in the comic theatrical genius. So where better to experience that genius than at Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT), when JW Productions present perhaps his most loved work, The Importance of Being Earnest, in the sunshine this August! Algernon, Jack, Gwendolen and Cecily discover that the course of true love never did run smooth as town and

NOW & THEN Andy Garth: Bucking the Trend!
A
s you well know I am constantly plugging my emporium Brighton and Hove Stuff in Western Road Hove... well, with House Of Fraser, Marks and Spencer’s and other large proper shops seemingly closing branches, I am expanding and opening shop two!
“ I unfortunately haven’t
won the lottery or the Pools (ask your parents) ”
Now I unfortunately haven’t won the lottery or the Pools (ask your parents), but with my network of friendly property contacts I have been given the opportunity to open a ‘Pop Up’ unit in an old chemist’s shop in Church Road Hove. And when I say “old” chemist’s, I mean it as the shop has been used for that purpose continuously from the 1880’s.
So as of this week I have filled the place with thousands and thousands of black and white photos from the Argus Archive for all you lovely people to rummage and delve into and buy (at very reasonable prices). Pictures of everything you can imagine from people to places, animals, events, sports, views of Sussex – in fact you name it and I’ve probably got a picture of it. We are hoping to be open seven days a week and would love you to come along and hunt through the pictures and ask questions and get lost in this vast collection of snaps from the 1960s to the 1990s. The actual address is: 114 Church Road Hove, on the corner of Albany Villas and opposite the HSBC.

ometimes a couple of things pop up on your telly screens that just lift your spirits. This week sees the arrival of A Year To Fall In Love, and the return of Adam Hills’ The Last Leg. How’s that for positive thinking with a large dollop of humour?
“ Is there anything more hopeful and brave than looking for love? ” A Year To Fall In Love follows twenty single people across the UK filming every moment, marking the dating app explosions, the raw fallouts, hopes and nailbitingly true courage – because that’s what it can take to step out into that dating pool sometime. Is there anything more hopeful and brave than looking for love? A real leap of faith in the goodness of humanity that there is someone that chance happens to pass your way who will treat your precious heart in a kind and considerate way. What are the odds? And – here’s the thing – do your chances improve with the likes of Tinder and Match.com or are the old ways the best? It’s one of the oldest quests to go on, but with new questions arriving with technology and attitudes, this promises to be a revealing show to viewers – singletons and matched up alike. Friday night is blessed once again with The Last Leg, with hosts Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker joined by guests from entertainment and politics to discuss the week’s events. Despite this being the show’s fourteenth series at its heart it remains fresh, due in no small part to the combination of the hosts’ fast thinking humour and their live social media feed. Still working with the hashtag that emerged way back when with their Special Olympics coverage, #isitok encourages free discourse in a way that lets the stupid questions be asked – rather than let the stupid ideas fester through fear of asking. A simple and enduring concept. Plus, Papa Hills’ monologues giving gravitas and voice to real frustration at the state of the nation are frequently so on point they’re a favourite on social media shares the next day. So here’s to hope this week – for true love and free communication to work together. Isn’t that nice? A Year To Fall In Love; Tuesday; Channel 4, 10pm The Last Leg; Friday; Channel 4, 10pm
