6 | COCKTAIL WEEK

Blossoming adventures

Brighton’s biggest ever cocktail week is set to shake up and stir the city

T

hat time is coming around again, Brighton Cocktail Week is on the horizon (6–15 July) and our taste buds are tingling in anticipation. If you’re not sure where to turn to mix it up in town Andrew Kay is here to help with his guide on where to go, what to drink, and what’s on offer (p6). That’s the thing about this time of year: it’s festival time, we’re outside, dancing, eating, exploring something new – whether it’s fresh tunes, ideas, history, tastes... whether you’re after a hippy fairy trail in the woods or fine dining opera at Glyndebourne, outdoor living is in its prime. Coming to Crawley is yet another sunshine treelined avenue of exploration in the form of the Gin Festival (p11). As well as big screens broadcasting Wimbedon fortnight starting soon, the football, and family days out in the park. Not forgetting the people who unfortunately spend 365 days a year living outside, largely overlooked and separate. Listening To The Unheard (p11) at Brighton Dome is a day full of events sharing the stories of the homeless and the travelling communities, painstakingly gathered and opening up a window on a whole world kept at arm’s length and seen as ‘other’. We are fortunate in so many ways, not least of all being able to witness the changing of the seasons so clearly here in Sussex, with our nature and calendar events. Time to count all of our blessings, and to check the privilege we have been afforded. Even if it’s simply with a picnic.

Dinosaur World Live roars into theatres with a major UK Tour – New 2018 Cast Announced

D

INOSAUR WORLD LIVE brings dinosaurs to life on stage in an interactive show for all the family (ages 3+). Following a hugely successful UK tour last year, Dinosaur World Live returns due to popular demand, now featuring a brand new Triceratops. The 2018 UK tour visits Worthing’s Pavilion Theatre on Friday 13 to Sunday 15 July. The 2018 cast includes: Elizabeth Mary Williams (Miranda), Alexandra Harman (Understudy Miranda/ Puppeteer), Darcy Collins (Puppeteer), Liam Wright (Puppeteer), Samantha Arends (Puppeteer), Chris Milford (Puppet Technician/Puppeteer). Using stunning puppetry to bring remarkably lifelike dinosaurs to the stage, Dinosaur World Live presents a host of impressive prehistoric creatures including every child's favourite flesheating giant, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, along with a Giraffatitan, Microraptor, Segnosaurus and Triceratops. The show introduces Miranda, daughter of palaeontologists, who grew up surrounded by dinosaurs on a faraway island off the coast of South America. She has brought her prehistoric pals to your local theatre and would love you to meet them.

Warning: some of these dinosaurs aren’t as docile as they seem. If looking for fun things to do with the kids, Dinosaur World Live delivers an entertaining and educational live show that promises to delight the whole family. Each performance is followed by a post show meet and greet where audience members have the opportunity to meet some of the dinosaurs in person.

“ It’s an inspirational

show – it fires the imagination, and teaches you things you might not know ”

Dinolovers are urged to book fast before tickets become extinct. Dinosaur World Live is written and directed by Derek Bond (Sweet Charity, Manchester Theatre Awards 2017 winner, Little Shop of Horrors Manchester Royal Exchange). The creative team includes:

Produced by NICOLL Ltd. Dinosaur World Live writer and director Derek Bond says, “It’s an inspirational show – it fires the imagination, and teaches you things you might not know about famous dinosaurs like Trex and triceratops, but also introduces you to dinosaurs you might not have heard of like microraptor and segnosaurus. My hope is that audiences will come out desperate to know more about dinosaurs, and with their imaginations working on all cylinders.” Tickets for Dinosaur World Live are priced at £14 and are available from the Worthing Theatres box office on 01903 206 206 and online at worthingtheatres.co.uk.

righton is seen as the cocktail capital of Europe. Other city’s might be bigger, might have more bars but here on the south coast cocktail culture has been at the heart of going out for many years. And that culture has been influencing coktail makers on a global scale. Now Brighton's biggest ever cocktail week is about to start and throughout the city you can enjoy £5 cocktails with a twist at over 40 bars and restaurants around Brighton & Hove. Organised by Brighton’s Mixology Group, the city’s cocktail training masters, and Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival, the city will be celebrating the cocktail in its many forms, from long and sexy to short and dry, dry, dry! In bars and in restaurants excellent mixologists will be shaking it up using a range of featured spirits and mixers and there’s sure to be something to suit every palate. On Friday 6 and Saturday 7 July, why not join in the fun at the Paganini Ballroom and Regency Room at the Old Ship Hotel on the seafront for a two day Cocktail Court festival showcase, featuring local producers and leading international brands. The Curlew, Bodiam

Chaula’s, Brighton

A second venue for this brilliant Indian restaurant is now open here in Brighton. Chaula and her team breathe fresh air into the idea of Indian food with authentic recipes served in stylish surroundings. The cooking has an altogether healthier approach – but not at the cost of flavour. Thali Deals available 12pm3pm; Meal Deal £9.99. Brighton, BN1 1HT, 01273 771661, www.chaulas.co.uk

Chaula’s, Lewes The search for great food has taken me all over the world but these days we can find plenty right here in Sussex, and last week I was reminded how good the local scene is by a trip to Bodiam and The Curlew. Their new chef Gary Jarvis is certainly putting this fine restaurant back on top with a menu of beautifully presented dishes that champion great seasonal produce and classic skills. Ms McD joined me for lunch and after some delicious canapés, including a startlingly good beetroot meringue, we went through to wax lyrical over great bread and a sensational trio of butters – all this before the real dishes had started. Her starter of pork belly was declared excellent, and it looked it too, in a portion that would shame many modern restaurants’ main courses too. I started with pigeon and could not have been happier, perfectly cooked breast, tender confit leg and accompanying details that all deserved to be there, no silly frills here. On to main courses and Ms McD dived into a fillet of halibut served with perfect asparagus and a fricassé of peas and bacon. I looked on with envy but not for long. Pretty soon I was wallowing in a rich dish of beef fillet, oxtail ravioli, morels and foie gras, yes I admit I succumbed to the lure of the liver. It was perfect, brilliantly seasoned, dressed with a sauce and perfumed with truffle, rich stuff indeed. On the side Jersey Royals came basking in minted butter and tender stem broccoli with almond butter, both in generous portions. Ms McD went on to enjoy an impressively light sticky toffee pudding with walnuts and a pool of heavenly sauce, yes I dipped in. I chose rhubarb, a seasonal favourite and what arrived was so beautiful it seemed a shame to dive in, but dive in I did. That is after cracking open a sphere of cocoa butter that on breaking disgorged a rhubarb gin cocktail across the parfait and fruit scone crumbs. It was a coup de theatre for sure, but also a finely balance dessert in every sense. Given that it was lunch time I drank one glass of hearty red with my beef and plenty of water, and as if we had not eaten enough already we still managed a plate of delightful petit four. Bodiam is not too far, take in a fine meal, their set lunch is only £28 for three courses (we ate a la carte), then take a walk around the castle after.

“ Chef Gary

Jarvis is certainly putting this fine restaurant back on top ”

ew things say summer as much as open air theatre and here in Brighton and Hove we are so lucky to have BOAT, the fine legacy of Brighton theatremaker Adrian Bunting. Despite the vagaries of British weather we all set out, rain or shine, to enjoy thespians cavorting in the open air so why not book in to catch a spot of Shakespeare? Following their smash hit A Midsummer Night’s Dream last year and Much Ado About Nothing the year before, the reputation of the Brighton Shakespeare Company for funny and accessible productions of the bard’s great works is growing – and this production promises to charm and delight in equal measure. Directed by The Treason Show’s creator, Mark Brailsford and starring Paul Moriarty (EastEnders, The Gentle Touch) The Comedy of Errors sees the company back at Brighton Open Air Theatre with a madcap and bonkers (their words) production of this

ootball, football everywhere, and not much else to watch. Very little new is arriving on the small screen frontier at the moment, mostly because the world and their significant other are tuning in to watch the FIFA World Cup, having a barbecue, or going out to catch the start of the Summer blockbuster cinema releases. There’s a reason loads of gems come out to play come Christmas time and suddenly our flatscreens are overloaded with Agatha Christie adaptations, period dramas, and shiny thrillers, comedies and variety smorgasbords. It’s cold outside then, and they’ve got a captive audience. Now it’s hot, and only a few arrive on the peripheries of the schedules.

“ Our flatscreens are overloaded

with Agatha Christie adaptaions, period dramas, and shiny thrillers ”

A couple such newbies are comedies Stath Lets Flats and Lookalikes. Stath Lets Flats is a new sitcom cowritten by and starring Jamie Demetriou as the hapless Stath, working for the family lettings agency business. This quieter screen time of year allows for the bigger television channels to take a punt on a new idea with somebody fresh, and that’s just what this is. It’s also got a classy calibre of people already established in comedy involved, from Katy Wix (The Windsors, Agatha Raisin, Not Going Out) as supporting character top agent ruthlessly ambitious Carole, to cowriter Robert Popper – whose past CV includes Peep Show, Look Around You and Friday Night Dinner. And Natasia Demetriou – Jamie Demitriou’s real life sister playing his fictional sister in the series. Just see if any ageold gripes between the two seem a little too raw in their responses. Lookalikes is back for a second series and describes itself as ‘a structured, flyonthewall reality comedy’. So a bit like Stella Street but with more blurring of the lines between celebrity and impersonator. Two new ideas to tickle your fancy after the sun has gone down and the final whistle has blown on the footie. Stath Lets Flats; Wednesday, Channel 4, 10pm Lookalikes; Wednesday, Channel 4, 10.30pm

L

atest TV has an LGBT stranded programme every night. This has been the case for quite some time, but it’s something that we can easily take for granted mixing up the reportage of Tales From The Margins, the indepth interviews on Queer Say and AK Souffle, and the broad entertainment appeal of Miss Jason’s House Party. Next month a new treat will be joining LGBT hour in the form of fresh a short film anthology series Shorts Out.

“ Short comedy or drama films

reflecting an aspect of LGBT life ”

Shorts Out brings something new to the nine o’clock slot, with each episode compiled of between three and five short comedy or drama films reflecting an aspect of LGBT life, each with a brief introduction from presenter Deborah Espect, Episode one hits the ground running with a comedy about a woman questioning her sexuality in the wake of a lesbian one night stand. As well as taking a serious tack with a story of a gay woman scared to come out to her mother, and a tale following a protagonist questioning their own gender identity. Closing with a short comedy called ‘A Lack Of Dating In Brooklyn’, marking the trials of a gay woman struggling to find a new relationship. Plans are for Shorts Out to broadcast every Thursday night, with a repeat available on Sundays, but do keep an eye out in Latest TV listings (always opposite this page) for the most uptothe minute details available.
