adzooks, it’s hot! More recordbreaking heat has arrived, thankfully along with a few more sea breezes coming in off the beachfront and blowing some of the stickiness away. Now is the time to triumph with your own ingenuity as we all Google ways to stay cool and drape a piece of ice cold watersoaked muslin over a fan – thanks South East Asia and your helpful hints. Personally, I’m fan of the trusty foot spa – soothing in the winter after trudging in big boots, calming in the winter as chilled water bubbles away around your toes. When I spoke with Shaun Ryder a couple of weeks ago ahead of this week’s interview (p5), we had rain and he was enjoying what he called a rare spot of Manchester sunshine. Seems like he’s sent the warm weather on down our way, ahead of his visit with Black Grape in November. Bangin’! Not that we have to wait that long for our own shot of entertainment, with plenty to choose from as Lewes welcomes its own Edinburgh comedy preview run, Me And My Girl makes an impression in Chichester, and the wee small people get the chance to sing along with their pals Tinky Winky, Po, Dipsy and LaaLaa at Theatre Royal Brighton (p13). From the very young, to the not so very young – don’t miss our feature from CEO of Age UK Brighton & Hove, Rachel Cashman, offering truly helpful advice and opportunities for help in this week’s Project Brighton (p7). Everything you need to look after yourself, and those you care about. Now, time to crack open that box of Cornettos...

SHAUN RYDER Frontman of seminal 90s bands The Happy Mondays and Black Grape, Shaun Ryder has a reputation for living large and waxing lyrical. He spoke with Victoria Nangle about his myth, his missus, and Taylor Swift – ahead of Black Grape’s November show at Concorde2. Are you looking forward to touring? Yeah. We've got the festivals with the Mondays shows, and then in October the Black Grape stuff starts. I'm well looking forward to it – I love it! It's all new and shiny and sparkly and fresh innit, so it's fantastic with new material. Ask me in about three or four years' time when I've been around the world twice and… hah hah hah… and I hate Kermit again. It's all fantastic. Are you guys getting on now? Oh yeah. We're old men aren't we. All that sort of ding dong's gone out the window. No sex, no drugs, just rock'n'roll really. Nice one. Do you find it's different playing with Black Grape as opposed to with Happy Mondays? ... well, I suppose. There's more sort of fullon stage for me, isn't it? I've got Kermit and I get to bounce around a bit and have sort of a laugh with him on stage – we're really good together. Whereas with the Mondays I'm stood sort of stationary and just sort of leave all of those shenanigans up to Bez. So I get to act young and foolish again with Black Grape. What's the strangest thing you've ever read about yourself that wasn't true?

Aw god, these are all just too many to mention. All sorts of bullshit. I mean, some of it… people will start with "this!" and "that!" and you're like – give over. "My mate saw this, you was there and this and that, and he knows you!" Well, okay. Perhaps there should be a Legendary book of you that doesn't quite correlate with the truth… Apparently one of those is on the way! There's all sorts of

Sounds like fun. Do you prefer to be in the studio or out on tour? Well I mean, we sort of get together writing. I mean I've got a shed at the back where we go in there and just mess about with beats and write, and so that's what we do. And then when we've got something we get into the studio. What do you think is the secret to a happy life? A happy life? My happy life is

“ All that sort of ding dong's gone out

the window. No sex, no drugs, just rock'n'roll really ” stuff going in that one, written by my former boss – he is my best pal and he was our tour manager for years and years, and he was a (alleged) drug dealer, and he's got a book coming out. And so it's going to be very funny I suppose. What's your own writing process? Writing process? Hmmmm… to get… pissed! Haha! Really chilling, put some music on, and start bouncing off each other.

just saying "yes" to everything the missus tells me. That makes her happy and that makes me happy – so I just do what I'm told. What she tells me to do, and that steers me a very happy life. Who inspired you when you were younger and started writing I really like your lyrics, manifesting ideas? When I started playing, listening to 'I Am The Walrus – Koo Koo Kachoo', and 'Paint In Black', Ziggy Stardust type lyrics, it all conjured up made

images and stories and that's sort of where I come from. So that's what I do, I write cartoon songs. Kermit's big love is cartoons and comic books and we both write with a comic strip point of view. What do you listen to now? You know what, because of where I'm at now with the girls a nine year old and a ten year old – it's all sort of Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande and all that sort of stuff. I mean new music at the moment – I don't really go and watch new bands or know what's going on. When the girls get to probably about 13 and they start wanting me to take them to indie bands then that'll be another lease of life for me on that front. At the moment it's all Taylor Swifts at the arenas and stuff. What I listen to at home now is Absolute 70s and Absolute 60s and Gold, and then I'll switch Dean Martin on or a CD of Northern Soul, or – you know – whatever. Well, it sounds like you're living life well. Yeah – I wish I discovered 30 years ago how your life can be without excessive amounts of drugs and 24 partying booze fuelled madness. Dines Out

THE

Oxney Organic Estate

Chaula’s, Brighton

A second venue for this brilliant Indian restaurant is now open here in Brighton. Chaula and her team breathe fresh air into the idea of Indian food with authentic recipes served in stylish surroundings. The cooking has an altogether healthier approach – but not at the cost of flavour. Thali Deals available 12pm3pm; Meal Deal £9.99. Brighton, BN1 1HT, 01273 771661, www.chaulas.co.uk

With so many of us making the choice to buy organic foods on a regular basis it seemed an appropriate time to visit an organic vineyard here in Sussex. Growing vines, in what in the wine industry is classified as a “cold climate”, is not easy and not without risks. But as we know Sussex wines, in particular sparkling wines, are grabbing the attention of the experts and winning international awards. Over at Oxney Organic Estate Kristin Syltevik and her small team are doing just that, growing organic grapes, making sparkling wines and achieving great acclaim. I went over to visit on what was a rather dull and drizzly day, but it didn’t detract from the experience as Kristin guided us around the vines, explaining what they have to do to simply grow the grapes required and stay true the Soil Association’s rules to achieve organic status. But they are not the only confines that can affect the business, weather can be a real issue, a late frost can seriously affect the final crop, weeds too are a problem, and deer. The estate has now been surrounded by a deerproof fence, although somehow they still manage from time to time to get through and reek havoc. Kristin initially planted two classic grape components of sparkling wines chardonnay and pinot meunier. But more recently she has added a third variety, seyval blanc. “The seyval was something of a controversial decision when we planted it, but it’s a sturdy vine that acts as a kind of insurance policy in years when the other two do not do so well.” A great decision given the quality of wines that are made using that grape in one of their blends. Kristin’s background is not in wine making but in PR and marketing, and this shows in the quality of their branding. The design is smart and modern and in no way tries to imitate the labelling of champagne. The team at Oxney are proud of their very British wines, and rightly so. And after our walk through the vines we slipped inside to see the production side of the business before tasting the wines. We started with their Estate Rosé, a delicate and very approachable wine that is very sensibly priced. I do wonder why we are currently so obsessed with prosecco in this country? After the sparkling pink we tried their classic 2015 vintage, a little more expensive but worth every penny – a sophisticated sparkler that defines everything that is good about Sussex wines. As well as making great wines the estate also hosts lots of special events, lunches and tours and there are even opportunities to stay over. For Kristin and her team this is clearly a passion, a risky one too, but one that is clearly paying off.

PROJECT BRIGHTON Age UK Brighton & Hove, helping people make the most of later life By Rachel Cashman, CEO of Age UK Brighton & Hove

O

ver 38,000 people living in Brighton & Hove are over 65 and with an ageing population, this figure is set to increase. Later life can bring a range of challenges, but Age UK Brighton & Hove exists to help people make the most of it. We provide information, advice and services and we’re the point of contact for older people who need help or support. We’re also there for family, friends and carers – those who love, support or have an interest in older people. We want our city to be a great place to grow older and that takes a community effort. One of Age UK Brighton & Hove’s core services is information and advice. We offer face to face, telephone and online support with queries regarding anything affecting older people. If we can’t help you directly, it’s likely we can signpost you to someone who can. Typical enquiries cover issues like choosing a care home or adapting your own home, money concerns, ill health, caring responsibilities or loneliness. Loneliness is a key issue for us. People often suffer in silence, feeling unable to tell others they are lonely. We estimate there are over 3,500 lonely older people in the Brighton & Hove area. The issue doesn’t only affect mental health. Feeling lonely has been shown to increase blood pressure and the risk of heart disease, weaken the immune system, impair sleep quality and increase vulnerability. In fact, it can be as harmful for our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day! At Age UK BH we are tackling loneliness by running a range of social groups. Bridge, chess, exercise classes or knitting are some examples, as well as traditional coffee mornings. We also involve older people in research projects, direct people to befriending services and we’re always on the look out for volunteers to join our LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

amazing team. We don’t want older people to feel alone in our city and we aim to be there for them if they need us. We’re also here to help with practical issues like helping people access benefits, health or social care. We run computer classes for those who want to learn how to use the internet and we help people stay safe online and avoid scams.

“ Loneliness is a key issue for us.

People often suffer in silence, feeling unable to tell others they are lonely ” We’re aiming to take our Information and Advice service out into the community more in the coming months. We’ve already run sessions at Brooke Mead Senior Housing and we’re looking at running it in conjunction with GPs’ surgeries, in supported/assisted living settings, we’re even looking at running one at a local Women’s Institute meeting. As well as supporting people directly, Age UK Brighton & Hove also aims to empower older people, represent them and give them an influential voice. We believe that they should be involved in the issues that affect them, so we work to make that happen. If you think we might be able to help you, or someone you care about then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can call us on 01273 720603, email info@ageukbh.org.uk or pop in and see us at 2931 Prestonville Road, BN1 3TJ. Whatever you’re facing in later life, we’re here for you.

NOW & THEN Andy Garth: School Site

A

t our last month’s auction I bought a couple of very unusual photos which I have added to my collection. The first view is Centurion Road Brighton from Upper Gloucester Road, looking South towards Church Street, in 1965 – just before some major demolition to build the new St Paul’s Junior School that exists today.

“ When photos are taken pre demolition as it reminds us what was there before ”

The second picture is from the Church Street end of Centurion Road, with the house on the right being all that’s left of that side of the street. I’ve also included a small concentrated

section of a map of the area as well to get your bearings. It’s a good thing when photos are taken pre demolition as it reminds us what was there before. It also reminds us that change is inevitable and perhaps should embrace it, as eventually becomes the norm and we forget. Sounds a bit heavy I know, but as long as we record and archive these changes the memories will always stay with us. A small personal note on this subject is that the new houses being built in Kensington Street Brighton are on a demolished site that was my own first family home, which we were asked to vacate in 1966 as it was going to be redeveloped. What we weren’t told was it would happen in 52 years time. Change gets to us all eventually!

STAGE Matt Lucas stars in Me & My Girl at Chichester Festival Theatre

M

e and My Girl started out life in the 1930s, a jolly British musical with music by Noel Gay and book and lyrics by L Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber. It was later made into a musical called The Lambeth Walk, and had a brief revival in the 1950s. But it is probably best known for the revival, penned by Stephen Fry and Mike Ockrent, in the 1980s a production that won two Olivier awards in the West End and three Tonys on Broadway. So given the track record, and the popularity of so many of the songs from the show, it should come as no surprise that Chichester Festival Theatre have chosen it as their festival season musical revival. For many years now CFT have garnered praise, awards and succesful West End transfers for their revivals of classic shows, and given the popularity of this piece no doubt they will have everything crossed for another transfer to London. This will no doubt be boosted by a stellar cast. Little Britain star Matt Lucas takes on the role of cheeky cockney

barrow boy Bill Snibson. Lucas is no stranger to musical theatre and joined the

cast in the West End for a season to play the role of Thénardier after featuring in the major O2 anniversary concert of Les Misérables. He is joined by Caroline Quentin who is best known for her roles in Men Behaving Badly, Jonathan Creek and Dickensian. She takes on the role of The Duchess of Dene as well as a wide range of theatre work. At Hareford Hall in Hampshire, suspense is in the air. The family solicitor has found the longlost heir to the Hareford title and riches. But, to everyone’s horror, he’s a Cockney barrow boy called Bill Snibson. As the Duchess determinedly sets out to transform him into a true gentleman, Bill’s sweetheart Sally wonders how she fits in to his new life. Before too long, Bill has to answer some soul searching questions about who he really is.

Fourth Season of Tales from the Margins

ver wanted to tell those who spout on about how best to run the NHS to put their money where their mouth is? Then you’ll already be glued to Celebrities On The NHS Frontline, which started last week as a part of the strand marking the NHS’s 70th anniversary. This week sees the concluding part, and as much as the title screams Channel 5 serial dropping an ex Hollyoaks actor in as a porter, edited to laugh at how they can never say the long words properly – this seems to be actually set to see pennies drop across the nation. Or at least it might, fingers crossed.

“ The title screams Channel 5 serial

dropping an ex Hollyoaks actor in as a porter ”

The cast itself gives hope to its calibre. The ‘celebrities’ all have their own histories with the NHS on an immediate – if possibly out of date – level. They’re not actors too. These recognisable names are medical journalist Michael Mosey, journalist Stacey Dooley, former Shadow Heath Secretary Ann Widdecombe, and Paralympian Jonnie Peacock. Working alongside hospital teams at King’s College Hospital in A&E, the Heart Attack Centre, Urgent Care, and the Children’s Ward (amongst other locations) will – I’m hoping – see them elbowsdeep in the trenches. The NHS is a remarkable organisation, and the more we realise that when it’s NOT an emergency, the better we can safeguard it for when it is an emergency. And perhaps show a little more grace under fire towards the hard working staff who get it in the neck when the public are at their most stressed out. On another note of national pride – Wimbledon fortnight has arrived! Sue Barker and her crew (there’s even promise of Boris Becker taking time out from that busy diplomatic career he’s been telling everyone about!) are here! So crack open the Pimm’s, lay out the strawberries, and tuck into the fortnight when the world turns its focus on our erratic weather. And some tennis. Hurrah! Celebrities On The NHS Frontline; Thursday, BBC1, 9pm Wimbledon; until Sunday 15 July, BBC1 & BBC2

he fourth season of Tales from the Margins, the weekly programme with films about the situation of LGBTIQ people and LGBTIQ rights around the world, has just started. It was opened with a Tales from the Margins Extra previewing the Queer Asia Film Festival which took place in London from 24 to 29 June. The programme is curated and presented by Rainer Schulze, Emeritus Professor of History and Human Rights. One focus of the new season will be on films from Asia, where the battle for LGBTIQ rights is ongoing. Samesex activities are criminalised and stigmatised almost everywhere, forcing many LGBTIQ people to remain in the closet. Vigilante attacks and honour killings against Faggotgirl Gets Busy In members of the LGBTIQ community are The Bathroom sadly still common. One of the films shown this season, SLAY, is a portrait of the young courageous Filipino LGBTIQ activist Floyd Scott Tiogangco who fights for the freedom of people to be themselves. Another focus will be on stories of disabled LGBTIQ people. Disabled people are no doubt one of the most Rainer Schulze underrepresented minorities on screen, and this lack of representation and visibility is even more true for disabled LGBTIQ people. We hardly see them at queer events, and even less on queer screens – except, perhaps, as objects of pity. At a time when the LGBTIQ community, and none more so than the male gay community, fetishises the fit, healthy and young body, functionally diverse LGBTIQ people, and their stories, are invisible. Tales from the Margins will show a number of films which strive to redress the balance and create more visibility for disabled LGBTIQ people.

“ Another focus will be on stories of disabled LGBTIQ people ” But there is still more to discover in this new season of Tales from the Margins, like the “dykeumentaries” by US filmmaker Krissy Mahan about gender identity and accessibility. Krissy often uses Faggotgirl, a butch dyke superhero action figure of herself, or Fisher Price toys to construct her short films. Or a film about planting pansies against homophobia; six of these pansies were actually planted in Brighton. All films are accompanied by conversations with the filmmakers, revealing more about why these films were made. Join Rainer Schulze on Mondays at 9pm for his weekly LGBTIQ film programme (repeated on Fridays at 9pm). And if you have, or know of any films that you would like to be shown on his programme, contact him at rainer@thelatest.co.uk.
