e’re living large! Isn’t it great to live on the coast? We’ve just enjoyed Brighton Cocktail Week (p9), a new season of excellent musicals has been announced at Chichester Festival Theatre (p5) – no doubt destined to West End success as so many of CFT’s productions have proven – and we can picnic and fundraise at the same time (p14)! Even the next generation are enjoying all the pleasures on our doorstep, as a couple of younger writers went out to sample the delicious tastes of some of Brighton’s delicious eateries (p7).

We live in such a rich part of the country, and we’re not the only ones who realise it if Parson Son & Basley Auction’s recent victorious sales results are anything to go by (p11). It’s a desirable location, and you don’t even have to open your wallet to step outside your front door and sample the benefits of the fresh sea air, fine Downs views, and a community feelgood factor.

Even our celebrity residents favour a home show for that special performance – thank you so much to Steve Norman of Spandau Ballet for his exclusive solo gig coming to the Old Market in September, including a Q&A. We are the lucky benefactors of his dry run to gauge his nerves on that score, in Ibiza – in Spanish! (p15).

All I’m saying is that we can count our blessings. This is home.

Our population goes up when the sun comes out, and the delights are all year round. Now, I’m heading for the beach!

A MUSICAL SUMMER AT CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE F

rom the Cockney streets of London to the world of Parisian haute couture might seem a stretch – but for Chichester Festival Theatre’s Artistic Director, Daniel Evans, it’s all in a day’s work this summer as he directs two musicals: the 1930s classic, Me And My Girl, which is playing until 25 August with a cast headed by Matt Lucas and Caroline Quentin; and a new work, Flowers For Mrs Harris, which runs from 8 – 29 September.

Last year’s productions of Fidder On The Roof (also directed by Daniel) and Caroline, Or Change continued Chichester’s outstanding reputation for hit musicals, both classic and contemporary. While staging musicals on Chichester’s thrust stages necessarily calls for imaginative choreography and design, Daniel also attributes this remarkable success to the audience.

“They clearly love their musicals; they make them special”, he says. “Different kinds of audiences come from all over the world

“ Both musicals contain immense amounts of joy ” and all spheres of life, and that’s something we’re very proud of and I hope will continue.”

It’s hard to think of a greater contrast than the uproarious chorus numbers and high­tapping dances of Me And My Girl, and the emotional delicacy of Flowers For Mrs Harris. Based on a much­ loved novella by Paul Gallico, it’s the story of a charlady in post­war London who glimpses a Christian Dior dress in one of her client’s wardrobes and scrimps and saves to go to Paris and buy one for herself.

“There are just ten actors in Flowers and it’s incredibly intimate”, Daniel agrees. “It’s about this ordinary cleaning lady, Ada Harris – LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

at least, she thinks she’s ordinary – whose life is transformed by this major event. So it’s much more like a play, it just so happens that some of it is sung. Richard Taylor’s music is exquisite.”

Nevertheless, Daniel see parallels between the two shows: “Both Ada and Bill Snibson in Me And My Girl are from lowly backgrounds, and find themselves in more sophisticated surroundings. They turn their own worlds and the worlds of those people they encounter on the journey, upside down.

“And both musicals contain immense amounts of joy. In Me And My Girl the joy is readily expressed through amazing tap dancing and upbeat numbers. Mrs Harris is a different kind of joy because it’s the joy of seeing someone who’s intrinsically kind and good, achieving her heart’s desire. It’s quite rare because while she has to overcome many obstacles, the effect she has on the people around her is very moving because she isn’t aware that she does it.”

Flowers For Mrs Harris began life in Sheffield, where despite having only ten performances, it won three UK Theatre Awards including Best Musical. At Chichester, Clare Burt recreates her award­winning performance as Mrs Harris, and is joined in the company by musical theatre stars Joanna Riding and Gary Wilmot.

“There’s a famous Stephen Sondheim quote: ‘musicals aren’t written, they’re rewritten’”, Daniel laughs. “While that’s true of any musical, it’s truer when you’re birthing a musical. With Flowers, we’ve undergone many stages of development. Since the initial try­out of the production in Sheffield, the writers have gone back to amend sections in order to include the things that they learnt from those original ten performances.”

However, Daniel is trusting that the effect on audiences will be the same.

“You could hear people weeping for joy at the end. Ada has done something with her life; she’s followed her dream. It’s such a universal theme that everyone can probably connect with, wherever you’re from.”

G

rowing up in the late fifties and sixties my experience of the exotic was to say the least limited. I can remember clearly my first taste of Chinese food, egg foo yung (omelette basically) and Indian (mushroom curry). It was hardly challenging stuff but it sowed the seed of greed, greed for international flavours. Flavours that at the age of 18 upon moving to London, I totally immersed myself in.

In saying this I was not deprived of great food and in those modest times, mum was working with a small budget, but applying a wealth of knowledge gained at her mother and father’s side. Cheap cuts and lots of hearty veg and pulses made for a great diet, a tasty diet that for many years has been neglected and perhaps forgotten.

Not any more, with the best chefs loving seasonal and local produce many of those dishes are returning – which is interesting not only for grown ups, but for

grown downs too.

These days we are more likely to be feeding our kids with dished that are foreign in origin than traditionally British. There’s nothing wrong with that, international influences and flavours are a fabulous way of opening minds to cultures and to travel. To acceptance too of global differences.

Every year at Latest we have invited youngsters from seven to seventeen to go out and report back on what this city has become famous for, great restaurants. This year two boys have been out to sample two sharply contrasting styles of food, one form the Far East and one from much closer to home. From spicy to traditional British, but traditional with international influences from both Europe and from America and Latin America.

These are two places that I love to go to – but let’s see what the boys have to say about some of the jewels in the city’s culinary crown.

n two floors, with a large outdoor balcony overlooking Brighton Square, everything looked good on the menu. There are stir­fry and stir­fry noodle dishes, noodle soup dishes, curry dishes, soups, salads, starters and side dishes to choose from.

I ordered the Chicken Satay as a starter, and the Guai Teaw Namsai Moo (try saying that right!), a clear noodle soup with pork (or tofu for the veggies), both delicious and filling. My Dad went for the Tom Yum Goong, their famous Thai spicy soup with tiger prawns and mushrooms, followed by Pad Med Mamung Himaphan Gai, a chicken stir fry dish, with cashews, chilli peppers, mushrooms, and onions. Really nice.

I asked my Dad what fritters were, liked the sound of it, and ordered Fritter Lover for desert, a banana fritter with coconut flakes, honey and chocolate sauce, and a big dollop of vanilla ice cream. Delicious! Dad had the Green Tea Cheesecake with ice cream. I liked that, too!

Street food in Thailand is big thing, and it’s getting popular here. I loved the food, the setting, and the staff were very friendly.

n Saturday morning my dad and I went for breakfast at Moksha, we managed to get a table even though it was very busy.

For drinks, I had a Pash ‘n’ Shoot (passion fruit, pineapple, mango and orange) smoothie, which I really liked because it tasted really fresh. The flavors weren’t too bold but you could taste every fruit that was in there. Dad had an iced lime crush that was very thirst­ quenching. It was nice to see paper straws being used as well!

On to breakfast and I had poached eggs on sourdough toast with homemade hash browns, chorizo and avocado. I really liked the hash browns because they were crispy and soft on the inside. My Dad had a half breakfast with bacon, Cumberland sausage, a generous portion of black pudding and he loved the scrambled eggs because they were light and creamy – also a special mention to the homemade baked beans (which included butter beans). After the meal I felt very full and would recommend Moksha to anyone because it was so welcoming and such a nice place to eat.

Brexit, the hot weather and the World Cup could not get in the way of what was, to say the least, an extremely successful day says auctioneer Simon Caplin. “From

ever a company to shy away from the controversial, Chichester Festival Theatre have engaged three of the UK’s most exciting young actors – Luke Thallon, Matthew Needham and Isabella Laughland – to appear in Kate Hewitt’s new production of Mike Bartlett’s Cock, which will play in the round at Chichester’s Minerva Theatre.

ocal children and young adults’ charity, Chailey Heritage Foundation, is encouraging picnic lovers nationwide to share a sandwich, flask of tea, or a cupcake or two whilst raising money for the charity with the launch of its Big Chailey Picnic fundraising campaign.

The charity unveiled its Big Chailey Picnic initiative, at a launch event with a VIP flight on the i360 on evening of 7 June. The event, kindly sponsored by i360, was attended by supporters of the charity, local dignitaries and friends and some of the young people from Chailey Heritage Foundation.

The Big Chailey Picnic’s start coincided with National Picnic Week (15­24 June), and is a brand new annual initiative that encourages ‘picnickers’ far and wide to come together, share their fayre and raise money for the charity. From builders to office colleagues, playgroups to politicians and mums to nuns, the charity is asking groups to take at least 30 minutes out of their day to break for a picnic, anywhere, anytime, and raise money for a great cause.

Promotional Big Chailey Picnic packs are downloadable free from www.thebigchaileypicnic.corg.uk and include bunting, printable stickers for jam­jars, ideas of how to fundraise and tips on how to organise your own picnic. All donations will go directly to the Sussex charity that educates and cares for over 220 children and young people with complex disabilities and high health needs.

STEVE NORMAN Being a member of Spandau Ballet propelled Steve Norman into the spotlight for 30 years, performing internationally with great artists around the globe. Steve speaks exclusively with Victoria Nangle about of his forthcoming solo show, Iggy Pop, and Spandau’s new frontman Hi Steve, how are you doing today?

I am very well, thank you.

Especially as the sun is shining with a vengeance in Brighton.

What made you decide to embark on your solo shows after playing with such iconic music figures and in Spandau Ballet for years?

I’d had various music industry friends pushing me to do it for some time; telling my story through music and dialogue.

But to be honest I didn’t always feel confident enough. The music side I knew I could handle but the baring of heart and soul during the QnA section kinda scared me.

However, last summer I jumped in at the deep end and performed in Madrid with my band, the QnA being in Spanish (I lived in Ibiza for many years and am fairly fluent). I then realised that you’re just talking to people. And I’m quite good at that.

The show set also promises tracks from acts that have influenced you – how big an influence have your peers been on your own material?

A pal of mine, who is also Spandau’s sound engineer, recently told me that he can hear almost every artist or musician that I have ever listened to in my sax, vocals and guitar work. I thought this a massive compliment.

One of the biggest influences on my songwriting has to be the Tamla Motown soul sound. It permeates almost everything I do. I also love electronica and often mix the two styles on my demos.

It's impressive that you have worked with the likes of Glen Matlock, Kim Wilde, Steve Harley and Iggy Pop. Are there any tracks of yours – or theirs – that you would love to tinker with – or jam together –

and in what way?

I am so fortunate and grateful to have worked with so many artists that I admire. Not all of them jam, although I personally love the spontaneity of improvisation; most recently with master blues guitarman Earl Slick and

up so for them to be performing on a song of mine was very special.

Another highlight for me was the time I performed improvised sax with Iggy. He brought me on stage with these words...

I wrote and produced a song ‘We Are King’ for supergroup, Holy Holy (feat. Woody Woodmansey, Glenn Gregory and Bowie/T.Rex producer, Tony Visconti who played bass on it).

I idolised the Bowie musicians whilst I was growing

I was so proud.

As a writer, is there anyone currently breaking through or riding high in the current charts you would love to perform one of your tracks? Which one, and why this person?

I’m really into ‘Girlfriend’ by Christine & The Queens right now. C&TQ is the stage name of Héloïse Letissier. I love the

sound of her voice, especially the French version of the song which brings a certain exoticness to it. I believe it’s generally a good time for creative music but there are so many artists that copy each other that they tend to sound alike. Originality is always so refreshing.

How has it been playing with Spandau's new frontman Ross William Wild? Has he brought his own dynamic to the shows and the band, and how have the fans responded?

This is an exciting time for Spandau. Everyone is on the same page now so to speak and it means that we can build again without ridiculous and untimely gaps. Ross has undoubtedly helped to reinvigorate the band. He is young and energetic and has given us a hefty shot of adrenalin. He’s also a right nice bloke.

For the most part the fans are as excited as us. The small minority that complain on our sites that it will never be the same are right in their assumption – it will never be the same, but they should take their complaints elsewhere. If you don’t like the fruit then don’t tickle our vine.

What is your biggest ambition for the future?

I very much enjoy my solo work and will carry on with this direction. However, Spandau is of great importance to me and will inevitably take priority. We aim to create new music as well as perform the hits that people know and grew up with. We will no doubt head to the studio soon. And I’m super excited about it.

BBC3’s striking factual drama Killed By My Debt airs on full terrestrial channel BBC1 this week, following the true story of Jerome Rogers, a 19 year­old courier from Croydon, whose two unpaid £65 traffic fines escalate to over a thousand pounds.

Crippled by the pressure of debt, and with no way of earning the money to pay it back with his bike clamped, Jermone took his own life.

The hard hitting film was made in close consultation with Jerome’s family, chronicling his transformation from a happy and hopeful young man to genuine despair in the face of the gig economy so many live in currently. Zero hours contracts and a job­to­job pay cheque are a tightrope balancing act vulnerable to fair weather employment. With so much at risk, hopefully Killed

By My Debt will be a contributing factor to some employment law re­evaluation.

Presenters Kate Quilton and Tamal Ray are joined by reporter Morland Sanders to take a look at contemporary health topics affecting many. renfell Justified Anger illustrates the desire amongst survivors, relatives and activists to seek answers for the deaths of 72 innocent men, women and children. My name is Omar Khan, and I have spent the last year or so following the events of the tragic Grenfell Tower inferno.

The film is made up into three parts: the aftermath, the Tories Out demonstration, and the anniversary. As the director, I felt it was imperative to show how the anger amongst the masses will not just evaporate as time passes, but rather more questions will be asked.

Narrowing the film down to an eleven­minute piece was quite the task, seeing as myself and Poli, the editor on this project, had to go through hours and hours of footage – but we believe the

I believe, as a journalist it is my duty to reveal the truth; but as a person, I wanted to help those in need so I decided to travel to Grenfell the day after the fire had destroyed the lives of so many innocent people. I will always remember how beautiful it was to see people of all nations and creeds coming together to try to bring about some community spirit amidst sadness such as I had never seen before.

People are angry and so they should be! This should not have happened especially in Britain, the same Britain which is seen as a beacon of hope to the rest of the world. We hope survivors will one day be able to find some solace. One will never truly know the suffering many of them experienced on that fateful evening.
