Pride in Pride

O

ver the last few weeks Brighton has been privileged to be host to Disability Pride, Trans Pride, and a whole array of smaller events and fundraisers raising awareness and spirits in the name of recognising and celebrating the diversity we are honoured to call neighbours. This weekend sees the arrival of Brighton Pride, and whether that means communing with the giants upon whose shoulders we stand on with reflection – or shaking every tailfeather in your fan in celebration with Britney in Preston Park, Brighton is shining every colour of the rainbow out, loud and proud. Last year I stood and watched the parade as it went by. I ran the gamut from tears to grins to boogying on down with the dance floats. Placards went past with the faces of some those brutally taken in Russia. Followed later by a float of half naked people brightly adorned, waving furiously, with their industry sponsorship splashed garishly about the truck they were on. I wandered over to the St James Street area and felt a belonging as the drag queens I’ve caught throughout the year sang their hearts out – celebrating, commiserating, engaging with everyone there. And I sang along with them. Brighton Pride is ours, and as it changes and grows each year is remains as relevant as ever. For our international siblings, our local teenagers finding the words to come out, for all those around the country who still flock here as a the safe LGBTQ haven it has become known as. Have pride in Brighton Pride. All the best from everyone at Latest, moving forward with the Live & Let Live project in Manchester Street, into a new era.

BRIGHTON LIGHTS W H AT TO D O I N T H E C I T Y

STAGE Quadrophenia

Q

uadrophenia is a brand new immersive stage show comprising of a vast array of talent that come together to recreate the 1979 cult classic inspired by music from The Who. Touring around the country it is, of course, coming to Brighton for the Bank Holiday weekend to help us celebrate all things Mod before Summer’s end. Produced by Concept Concerts this production, acclaimed by a Sunday Times journalist as; “mighty, moving and unstoppable,” sees 8piece band, The Goldhawks, deliver a stunning live performance of The Who’s smash hit concept album, Quadrophenia. From the very first show it has received standing ovations. Released over 40 years ago in October 1973, The Who’s second rock opera Quadrophenia was Pete Townshend’s homage to a pivotal moment in British youth culture. The album tells the story of Jimmy, a Mod, by chronicling his dissatisfaction with life, work, love, home, and family life. It served as an ode to teenage angst and counterculture rebellion, as well as a criticism of the British

class, economic and educational systems but you don't need to be clued up on the history of the Mods and Rockers to enjoy this show because at its core,

“ Pete Townshend’s homage to a pivotal moment in British youth culture ”

Quadrophenia, which peaked at No. 2 on the UK and USA charts, is just about teenage confusion, conflict and frustration. Backed with exciting, and sometimes heartwrenching, largescreen projection of archival footage, the emotions, tension and raw power that the music demands is delivered masterfully by the fabulous, charismatic band, The Goldhawks, with amazing replication of The Who’s sound. To send you home on an even bigger high there are a few alltime classic Who hits to close the show too. Concorde2, Friday 24 – Saturday 25 August, 7pm, £20, www.concorde2.co.uk

A VIEW FROM THE ROSTRUM Flat in Hove sold in 14 days!

I

n Parson’s Son and Basleys recent summer auction, they enjoyed a success rate of 93 per cent of their properties being sold whilst at the same time, a high proportion sold for comfortably in excess of the reserve amounts and in some cases, by as much as 30 per cent more – to the obvious delight of their clients. For example: from a guide price of £30,000 to £40,000, a garage to the rear of Sussex Square sold for an impressive and unprecedented £79,000, due to the sheer volume of people bidding for it, which included two telephone bidders, two proxy bidders and five bidders in the auction room itself. With many successful scenarios able to be recalled regarding the success of selling by auction, one in particular really does show just how beneficial this can be.

“ Whereupon a cash offer was made and accepted ” After having his ground floor garden flat in Hove on the market for 18 months, a new client telephoned Parsons Son and Basley after being continually let down by various buyers. That same afternoon auctioneer Simon Caplin inspected the flat and met with the owner, who immediately instructed Simon to enter the property into his next auction. However the client explained that if possible, it was preferred if a buyer could be found straight away and in advance of the auction. Taking the client’s instructions literally, Simon and his team set to work on marketing the property. Just a few days after receiving instructions, they held their first block viewing whereupon a cash offer was made and accepted! Three days later, on the Monday morning, the entire legal pack was delivered to the buyer’s solicitor and by the end of the very same 8 | LATEST

week, contracts were not only exchanged but also completed at the same time. “So from the date of being telephoned to the time the sale completed was a mere 14 days!” Simon explains. “This was in stark contrast to the previous 18 months our client had endured with abortive sales. In addition to this, the speed in which we were able to act did not compromise the price the flat sold for, which was its correct market value.” To sell a property in 14 days is not a particularly common occurrence, however it is something that is certainly possible if you sell through Parsons Son & Basleys Auction department. Sold in 14 days! Parsons Son & Basleys Auction department local auctioneer Simon Caplin explains: “On Friday 4 May I received a telephone call from a new client advising he had been trying to sell his flat in Hove for 18 months only to be continually let down by various buyers. On the afternoon of the same day I inspected the flat and was instructed to include it within my forthcoming auction on the 11 July. However, if possible it was preferred if a buyer could be found straight away and in advance of the auction. The following Tuesday 8 May we conducted our first block viewing, whereupon three days later a cash offer was made and accepted. On Monday 14 May the entire legal pack was sent to the buyer’s solicitor, and on Friday 18 May contracts were not only exchanged but also completed at the same time. So from the date of being telephoned to the time the sale completed was a mere 14 days!” Simon continues, “This was in stark contrast to the previous 18 months our client had endured with abortive sales, however the speed in which we were able to act did not at all compromise the price the flat sold for which was its correct market value.” If you would like to sell your property within 14 days then contact Simon Caplin or Jennifer Holmes on 01273 326171
