Going on a Summer holiday

W

hat makes a holiday good? I’ve been giving this some thought of late as conversations have turned to weekends away, belated honeymoons, and staycations. First and foremost, it seems to be who you’re there with. Which can be many people or simply your own sweet lonesome. It all depends what you want from this trip. I’m heading up for a whistlestop “heelllllooooo” at the Edinburgh Fringe for a few days, and although I will be staying with friends and have lots of pals and good fun acquaintances up for the whole month I’m also likely to have times of solitude. They’re all working, embracing the vibe for the long hall – it’s their marathon that I’ll be simply doing a quick jog alongside for a weekend. I’ve spoken with couples going on holiday too, and we agree that even if your interests don’t seem to mesh entirely it’s worth doing that bit of digging for a destination that fits the budget and allows each party to do their thing during the day and come back and compare notes for supper. Plenty of places offer stunning nature hikes as well as contemplative museums in the same postcode. It doesn’t have to be a battleground. And then there’s the staycation. With the current heatwave not looking to abate, our beaches, country walks, bars, restaurants and – dare I say it – boutique shops, all the trappings of time away can be had on your doorstep if you just turn off your phone and grab that book that’s been nagging you for ages. Saves on flights, and your Out Of Office notification won’t care if you’re in Rome or Rottingdean.

NOW & THEN Andy Garth: Postcodes and Boundaries

M

y topic this week is random this week, as as usual I’m rushing around like a headless chicken having been part of the Live and Let Live (Heritage Lottery) team working to deadlines – which is so not me, as the Editor of this fine publication will confirm!

“ You can literally have

one foot in one place and one in another ”

So the first snapshot is something that thousands of us drive past on a daily basis, situated on Marine Drive Saltdean, and is the boundary marker as defined in 1928 between Brighton Corporation and East Sussex County Council. So as with the Brighton and Hove border, you can literally

have one foot in one place and one in another. The second photo is of an original poster from around 1970, printed by the GPO (General Post Office) who were slowly introducing the postcode system around the country and Brighton was one of the early trialists. This is an example of the advertising campaign that was in operation. The original lithograph is by Bernard Brett, who it seems liked his Brighton as there are several other local images online by him. The poster is in the window of my shop in Western Road Hove if you are interested. Next time I will try to be prepared like a scout but if you have any suggestions of content please email me at Brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com

community supported beehives as part of the Worthing Honey Collective. Two hives were placed on the roof at Splashpoint Leisure Centre in July to house native honeybees that are looked

after by a resident beekeeper, with the first honey harvest expected in 2019 once the hive has grown to full size. The Worthing Honey Collective will involve local schools and businesses to find out more about beekeeping, pollination and honey. They are also looking to involve interested volunteers from the surrounding areas to be introduced to beekeeping in order to support them with this project and eventually keep their own bees. Get involved in the Worthing Honey Collective and support this innovative project that will make Worthing the most beefriendly coastal town in West Sussex. Dines In

THE

Hot tips

I

n the recent heatwave the idea of going out to dine could not be further from my mind. Much as I love restaurants I am equally in love with cooking at home. So this week I am going to share a few new found delights. Just a quick ray of sunshine brings out BBQ man. I’m no great fan of burnt meat that is still raw in the middle, but in good hands a BBQ can be fun. A recent package to my home contained a collection of Texan inspired Sweet Beet products, and before we talk air miles, these are produced in the UK. I opened jar after jar, wondering exactly how I might make use of them, but I soon found myself dipping, spreading and marinading like a cowboy – well perhaps not a cowboy but with true relish – in every sense. The predominant flavour is of course chilli, but not that fierce burn that so appeals to macho man. Not here, the spice is balanced and easy to moderate. I love the Habanero Lime Jelly’s citrus zing and the darker profile of the Beer Jelly. The Oak Smoked Apple Butter is intriguing and when coupled with good grilled cheese really hit the spot. And I cannot wait to experiment with the Maple Bacon Jam, as yet unopened but crying out for a well made burger I guess. But above all I am in love with the Strawberry Chipotle, which I have to admit sounded very odd indeed but turns out to be a triumph of sweet and spiky. So far I have basted pork ribs, chicken thighs and lamb cutlets with this clever concoction, and yes, I’ve eaten it off the spoon! I am about to try using them in cocktails too! To find out more go to the sweet beet.co.uk So there is my hot tip for the week, now for a cool tip. With the world gone gin crazy it was inevitable that the industry would soon follow with tonic water. It’s no longer enough to say gin and tonic, you now have to specify which tonic – and my word, how many are there? I actually prefer a straightforward tonic, I like to taste the gin to be honest. But there are times, especially when it’s too hot to drink booze, that I want a cooling but grown up soft drink. No slouches, Schweppes have released a range of alcohol free G&T drinks. They say ultralow alcohol not alcohol free so there is a tiny percentage, 0.5%, of the good stuff in there, but I guess you would need to drink an awful lot to get squiffy. Anyway, what are they like? Well they are very nice, very drinkable, one with grapefruit and one with lime, and if I was in a bar and not wanting to drink I would certainly give them a go. The overriding hit of course is juniper, the dominant and essential ingredient of any spirit daring to call itself gin. It’s an interesting product, and for the designated driver a safer option.

“ I cannot wait to

experiment with the maple bacon jam ”
