Festival Easter Eggs
I
t’s festival season, and no mistake. Whether you’re heading to Weyfest, Creamfields, SW4, Soul Circus or Elrow Town Festival – just because there’s no Glastonbury this year it doesn’t mean there’s no fun to be had cavorting around the country, being beckoned from one region to the next with the promise of awesome tunes and a magical vibe. That being said, as big festivals attract you to them their gravitational pull also pops up some marvellous satellites in their orbits that are real gems. When I was galavanting around the Edinburgh Fringe I discovered that only 30 minutes away by train is North Berwick and Fringe By The Sea, perched by a picturesque marina with two Spiegelents and a sea bird centre to host visiting guests. I caught an extended version of Mark Steel’s Edinburgh show (having more wriggle room here with timing than the sardine tin schedule executed in the Scottish capital). With oneoff comedy shows handpicked from the nearby melee including Seymour Mace, Arthur Smith, Simon Evans and Scott Capurro during its fortnight run, plus the likes of Sir David Steel and Judy Murray starring in oneoff events – it’s a bit of a diamond. Closer to home we’ve got our very own Brunswick Festival (p7) coming up, with music, massage, and more over the weekend. So maybe if you’re heading away to one of the biggies it’s worth considering a little dig around in the surrounding areas. Find out what else is on next door. And you may just find that festival Easter Egg you never knew existed.

ANDREW KAY The Independent
P
hew, it’s been a scorcher and nothing brings us out of the house and dining al fresco more than that. On a fine evening Ms C & Ms McD declared it a fine idea to pop to The Independent for dinner. We’ve been and always been impressed by the well cooked food and great range of beers, so it seemed a good idea, and the option of a terrace out front was equally appealing. Their menu is sensibly small, changes frequently and is seldom the victim of food fads or fashions. On this occasion Ms McD and I were immediately drawn to the same two dishes. Well what’s not to like about crispy squid served with a fragrant tarragon sauce? I love squid and remember the days back in prehistory when the much missed Latin In The Lane would simply griddle it – total perfection. Well for once that element of perfection was matched, not by cooking in the same way but by achieving that difficult balance of crisp and tender. We were both impressed. Ms C was not taken by the starters and after contemplating the option of a pud later tendered the concept of starting with the cheese platter. Unconventional maybe but it certainly put a huge smile on her face, in part because the selection of cheeses was simple and of great quality but also because the portions were more than generous. We are all tired of minuscule slices of cheese served on huge plates with “artisanal” crackers with the charm of cork coasters. No, this hit the spot and served as starter and then after her main course as a final course. For main course she chose the burger, a fine example of the kind that went down more than well, especially as she was allowed to select skinny fries as opposed to chunky chips. Ms McD and I had spotted the lamb gigot which came with roasted new potatoes and courgette and an excellent mint salsa. It was a more than generous slab of lamb leg, served on the bone and despite being a little past the promised pink it was both tender and very tasty. What really impressed though is the honesty of this food and the generosity of the portions. It may not be the cheapest pub food in town but the quality is very impressive and there’s none of the pretence we all too often find, where dishes appear to have been designed rather than cooked and designed for dolly portions. Whilst there I was also taken to book all three of us in for their beer tasting breakfast event on Saturday August the 25th – a full English followed by three artisan brewers and their beers. I can think of few better, and perhaps dangerous, ways to start a summer’s weekend.
“ What really
impressed is the honesty of this food ”

his beautiful home is located in the sought after Sea Lane area of GoringbySea, being within close proximity of Goring seafront, where there are cafes, a yacht club and Goring Greensward which is ideal for picnics, ball games and barbecues or just sitting and relaxing, watching the world go by. There are local shopping facilities available at nearby Goring Road and the area is also well served with good local schools, bus services and mainline railway stations. A stunning four bedroom detached Victorian villa, which has undergone a complete refurbishment and modernisation program by J W Stratton Ltd as part of the 64 Sea Lane development which comprises this property plus three contemporary houses.
“ A stunning four bedroom detached Victorian villa, which has undergone a complete refurbishment ”
The villa benefits from gas fired central heating, double glazed sash windows, cloakroom, bay fronted living room, bay fronted family room, and a quality fitted Alexander’s kitchen with adjacent dining room plus a utility room. To the first floor there is a master bedroom with ensuite bathroom, three further double bedrooms and a family bathroom/WC. To the outside there are front and rear gardens and parking for two vehicles. Worthing town centre with its historic pier is found to the east approximately 2.5 miles distance. There is also an excellent range of local shopping facilities and restaurants as well as a superb beach which is popular for windsurfing and kite surfing. GoringbySea is also home to the English Martyrs Catholic Church which features the only known reproduction of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling in the world. The work was started by Gary Bevans, a sign writer parishioner with no formal training in 1987 after a parish pilgrimage to Rome. The GoringbySea railway station is also thought to have been the inspiration for the name of the character, Lord Goring, in Oscar Wilde’s play ‘An Ideal Husband’, as he lived in Worthing during the late 1800s. www.michaeljones.co.uk

STAGE Don’t cry – The Lloyd Webber Rice classic heads to Brighton’s Theatre Royal
E
vita was Andrew Lloyd Webber’s fifth and final collaboration with Tim Rice and arguably their best work. Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat may have stood the test of time in terms of revivals, Jesus Christ Superstar has of course a great story but perhaps that story does not have the same romantic appeal – so when it comes to a cohesive piece of musical theatre Evita tops them in every sense – and let’s face it, how many of us knew the story of Eva Peron before this musical hit our consciousness? The answer is simple, this is a better story delivered with original songs that are not pastiches of other musical genres, something that this team had previously relied on. This was Lloyd Webber finally finding his own voice and Rice in his lyrical prime. Now, after captivating audiences for the past 10
years in the UK, embarking on two West End seasons and following an international tour, Evita returns to the UK with a brand new cast for the Autumn season. Starring three of the finest musical theatre stars Lucy O’Byrne (The Sound of Music, Les Misérables) plays the iconic role of Eva Perón, with Mike Sterling (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables) as Juan Perón and awardwinning West End leading man, Glenn Carter (Jesus Christ Superstar – on stage and screen and Les Misérables) as Ché. This is the story of Eva Perón, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Perón. Evita follows Eva’s journey, which ultimately led her to be heralded as the ‘spiritual leader of the nation’ by the Argentine people.
“ A cohesive piece
of musical theatre ” With more than 20 major awards to its credit, an Oscar winning film version starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, and featuring some of the best loved songs in musical theatre, including ‘Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’, ‘On This Night of a Thousand Stars’, ‘You Must Love Me’, and ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s extraordinary musical Evita is an iconic classic not to be missed! NOW & THEN Andy Garth: Deeds indeed
L
ast week we had a very successful auction where we sold nearly 250 lots of anything and everything Brighton, Hove and Sussex from bottles to books, pictures to postcards and deeds! Now deeds seem to be a popular purchase, and for those of you not familiar with them I will now try and explain – in my simplistic way – the attraction.
“ The more interesting
ones will have a plan, handdrawn and coloured ”
Deeds are beautifully handwritten documents (although hard to read) that relate to the beginnings of the land and property that confirm first ownership, as wellas all relevant information needed to

prove all aspects of the boundaries and uses to that particular house – or as sometimes called ‘messuage’. The great thing is that from a family history or social history point of view, these documents have it all. But best of all I think they are small works of art that I have seen mounted and framed in offices and private house for all to see. The more interesting ones will have a plan, handdrawn and coloured, and will more often than not have a wax seal from the solicitor or authority dealing with the site. There are some very old ones out there, but the majority of deeds that we see are mid to late Victorian and the handwritten versions faded out with the invention of the typewriter. The two displayed are examples from around 1870. These days they are not necessarily required, but should you want your own house deeds you can check with Land

DYLAN MORAN Dylan Moran brings his new tour Dr Cosmos to Brighton Dome, sharing his views on consumerism, mental health, lauding the art of storytelling, and the wonder of imagination. Moran spoke with Brian Donaldson to give us a peek at what’s to come
A
s he prepares to take Dr Cosmos across the UK, it might feel as though Dylan Moran has an intricately conceived game plan in place given that he announces a new comedy tour approximately every three years. But that feeling would be quite wrong. “I’m glad to be able to say that I don’t know how often I tour, because I can’t really deal with knowing exactly what I’m going to be doing. But I do enjoy touring and I’m really looking forward to this one. It’s great fun getting to go places. Last year I went to Lincoln: I’d never been there before.” A reader and a thinker, Dylan is always alert to the comedic or philosophical possibilities all around him. And never is this more apparent than when he’s on the road. “I try to make myself very responsive, and you’re always on when you’re touring, constantly receiving and transmitting, but you can’t be like that all the time. You have to come home and be boring dad. Which I’m very good at apparently. And yes, they tell me that in no uncertain terms.” Little do they know, perhaps, that this dull father is one of the most acclaimed UK based comedians of the past three decades. Never does Dylan seem more alive than when he’s working his material before a live audience. “I have high hopes for this show, I’m really into it. And I’m really into what an incredible time it is to be doing comedy. I want people to come in and have a great time and go home feeling better. I’m not going to ask people to understand anything too complicated or anything that I feel can’t be understood. A lot of it is about pulling the squirrels out of the bag and giving them a name or a
number. Let’s just say that I’m organising the squirrels.” So, who is this Dr Cosmos that Dylan Moran speaks of? Is it some fictional man of the world? Or is it the Irish comedian himself in stage guise? “I get these ideas for
So where does overreliance on technology that answers all our questions in a nano second leave the art of storytelling? “I think people are desperate for it; we really need it. And we need to be around the fire and hear it.
“ A lot of it is about pulling the
squirrels out of the bag and giving them a name or a number ”
themes or identities that obsess me for years and Dr Cosmos has been around for a while. I’m writing a pilot episode which has Dr Cosmos as the title and it’s about all kind of things, like consumerism and mental health. It’s the idea of a snakeoil salesman, like those ads you see on the net about losing your tummy by eating bananas or not eating bananas, whatever it is. A lot of the live show is about people just trying to cope. The big things still apply: family is still there and the root systems don’t change, it’s just the way we’re living has.” Much of this new way of living has, of course, much to do with the technology that seems constantly at our fingertips. It’s fair to say that Dylan isn’t exactly approving of our dependency on screens. “Look at the mystery that has been taken away from us: the whole romance of human history was made by all the imagination and projection of people in one place wondering what was over the hill. There was myth and storytelling, but now everything we could concoct in the dark has been replaced by the crystal clear Samsung LED screen. All those deliberations that were needless but very human and showed how inventive, capable and nutty we were has been swept away now.”
We’re confused about what’s happening to us now, and that’s why you get Brexit and you get Trump and you get all this polarisation.” If people are craving stories and storytellers, then they can still delight in the innovative world of Dylan Moran. And the good news is that he has plenty to say. “I write a lot, so I’ve got tons of material. That’s never been a problem for me, the problem is deciding exactly what to do with it. Much of what I have for this show is about
the incredibly fluid nature of now, how disorientating and tiring it all is and how it feels to try and orientate yourself and stay foursquare on the earth.” What Dylan won’t be doing is looking around at other comedians for inspiration or to glean a sense of what’s on other people’s agenda. He’s certainly not immune to what’s going on in the comedy world and enjoys everything from the Dutch absurdism of Hans Teeuwen to the smart observational work of Kevin Bridges, but you’re unlikely to find him lurking in the shadows at a standup show. “That’s just sensible. Are there jockeys out there hiding behind hedges looking at horse races? I don’t think so. Are there hookers with their noses pressed up against the windows of cheap hotels? I don’t think so... I don’t know why hookers and jockeys came to mind, but there you go. I don’t seek live comedy out but I love it when I see someone who has their own voice.” Dylan Moran: Dr Cosmos, Brighton Dome, Friday 30 November, 8pm, £26, brightondome.org

PROJECT BRIGHTON Local Community takes on a Bonkers Bike Ride Challenge for charity!
L
ocal supporters and businesses came together and used their pedal power to raise money for Brighton charity The Starr Trust, which supports young people of Sussex in art, sport and education. Now in its third year, this Pier to Pier Charity Bike Ride ran from Garth Pier in Bangor, North Wales, back to our own West Pier in Brighton, travelling through both stunning landscapes and difficult terrain.
“ On day 1 alone, cyclists spent 9
hours in the saddle and negotiated 3,077 metres of elevation change across the width of Wales! ”
This fantastic and challenging four day bike ride ran from 11 July to 15 July during some of the hottest days of the year. Seventeen determined cyclists set off from Bangor, travelling through the striking landscape of Snowdonia, through Shrewsbury, Stratford uponAvon, across beautiful Windsor and over the demanding terrain of the Dyke heading back to Brighton’s West Pier for a celebratory Reception Party, kindly hosted by the i360. With a daily 6am start there was certainly plenty of time for the cyclists to face many challenges, but the Peloton kept focus and enjoyed stunning views, great pubs and cafes en route and LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
fantastic hospitality provided by the Premier Inn hotels. There were broken hub flanges, flat tyres, road closures and motion sickness! On day 1 alone, cyclists spent 9 hours in the saddle and negotiated 3,077 metres of elevation change across the width of Wales! Luckily for the cyclists, Brown from Brown’s Bikes was on hand as support mechanic, and local bakeries and supermarkets had provided loads of snacks to keep them going. Alongside that there was a great deal of lighthearted banter and a real sense of camaraderie among the group and everyone had a brilliant time. On day 4 of the bike ride, friends and family gathered together by the West Pier on a sunny Sunday afternoon to cheer on their loved ones as they arrived on the seafront. The celebrations began on the deck of the i360 with plenty of yummy food from West Pier Pizzeria and a very well deserved rest for the team! The sponsorship money will continue to come in for another month so a final count of how much was raised wasn’t available yet, but will be on the Starr Trust website soon. Rosie Molloy, one of the event organisers told us, “we are really grateful to all the cyclists who took part and would like to thank The Brighton Implant Centre for being our main sponsor and Enterprise Car Rentals for donating our support vehicles. We are thrilled to have so much backing from the local community, and some great business relationships and friendships were formed over the 4 days. We can’t wait to begin planning next year’s ride”. The Starr Trust supports young people living in the BN postal code area, aged 10 18 to fulfil their potential in Art, Sport and Education. They provide financial grants up to £5000, training and development of skills, connections and mentoring. To find out more visit starrtrust.com
