hilst we have spent the last month luxuriating in the Summer weather, taking day trips, sea dips and multiple hair clips (it’s too hot to not pin it up!), a large minority of our creative population have been treading the boards and the cobbles up in Edinburgh for its legendary Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Brightonbased actors, comedians, playwrights, directors, technicians... as well as those booking and cooking up ideas for next year’s Brighton Fringe programme. Amongst this witch’s brew of magical creativity were comedians Angela Barnes and Sameena Zehra, with an initiative – Home Safe Collective – so revolutionary yet so simple, it was little surprise it collected the Panel Prize when the winners of the Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2018 were announced. With shows running into the wee small hours, this crowd funded scheme offered access to a taxi account for women, LGBTQI, and vulnerableperformers – helping to make the biggest arts festival in the world a safer place for so many this year. And with £5,000 in prize money from the award, the Home Safe Collective is already ahead in its fundraising for next year. That this scheme was set up in reaction to the brutal murder of Eurydice Dixon, a Melbourne comic who was attacked on her way home from a gig is a tragedy. That it has been so successful is a triumph. If you would like to contribute just go to https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/869hIENiIV and support the safety of the future of the arts.

ith over a decade of success under their belt as the leading sales and lettings agency in Brighton, the directors at MTM Property Services felt it was time for a change. Speaking to MD, Leon Mepham, we delve in to find out why the change and what the future holds. We noticed a rather large bright blue office under the name of Coapt has appeared on Lewes Road, that’s a bit of a dramatic change! Tell us more... We’re always looking to improve the way we operate, and after consultation with the fantastic branding agency UnitedUs, we identified areas we could, and needed to, evolve. The way we interact with our tenants, landlords and each other needed

improvement so we’ve made huge cultural changes, and employed more staff to help us deal with the volume of work more efficiently and in a more friendly, helpful and transparent manner. That’s a huge change for your business. I’m curious, what was behind the rename? With so much change it became clear that we are no longer the same business we were as MTM and we wanted to make that 4 | LATEST

clear to the market. The word means “to bring together”, which fits really well with what we’re trying to achieve. We really want to focus on building strong relationships between our tenants, our landlords and each other. We’ve employed a whole new maintenance department who deal with maintenance issues full time. We have an online reporting app which works through our website, so tenants can report maintenance with photographs – 24/7. We’ve also made some cultural changes and educated the staff to deal with every situation more sympathetically. We have a brandnew office which is great, custom designed by the folks over at Chalk Architecture, welcoming and energetic in its look, which personifies us as an agency. What do you have planned for your new brand moving forwards? Challenging preconceptions of what is usually expected from our industry! We really want to be open honest, friendly and approachable. We’ve got such a great team and I want them to show the industry how clients, tenants and everyone we interact with should be treated. We’ve had some excellent feedback from tenants and landlords so far who feel they’re getting the personal touch and attention they deserve. We’ll keep improving our processes, listening to feedback and providing a better service for tenants and landlords. We believe we’re on to a good thing which will help us grow further as an agency. We’re well know for student lettings and buytolet sales, and feel it's now time to develop our residential sales and professional lettings divisions. STAGE Chichester highlights Winter brings a feast of entertainment to Chichester Festival Theatre. Here are just three of the highlights of this fabulous season. THE MESSIAH An hilarious Christmas comedy that promises to be the funniest and most magical Nativity you will ever see. A travelling theatre troupe of two actors and an opera singer arrive by camel in the ancient town of Chichester to masterfully enact the greatest story every told. Directly prior to the West End, this new comedy of Biblical proportions, written by the Olivier Awardwinning writer Patrick Barlow (The 39 Steps), sees Hugh Dennis, opera star Lesley Garrett and John Marquez play a cast of thousands in a comedy that conjures the sublime, the ridiculous and the angelic. Festival Theatre, 12 – 17 November

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE Young Will Shakespeare has writer’s block and he’s in dire need of inspiration. Then he meets the beguiling Viola de Lesseps, who is prepared to do anything – including risking the frosty disapproval of Queen Elizabeth I – to fulfil her illicit dream of performing on the London stage.

W H AT TO D O I N T H E C I T Y

This adaptation by Lee Hall of Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard’s multi award winning classic, with music by Paddy Cunneen, is exuberant, witty, funny, and a beautiful homage to love, art, and the theatre itself. Festival Theatre, 20 – 24 November

“ A comedy of

biblical proportions ” THE NIGHTINGALES One of the UK’s bestloved stars, Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey, The Street) makes a rare stage appearance in an intriguing new comedy by actor/playwright William Gaminara (Silent Witness, The Archers, An Enemy of the People), directed by Christopher Luscombe (Love’s Labour’s Lost & Much Ado About Nothing). When the local acappella group gather in the village hall they have every reason to look forward to their weekly rehearsal. Whatever their differences, all are happily bound together in their shared love of music. The two hours of laughter and harmonies fly by. Until one day newcomer Maggie knocks on the door and everything changes… Festival Theatre, 27 Nov – 1 Dec 01243 781312, cft.org.uk

hen you spend your life eating, well rather a lot of your life, and you are constantly searching for something new, there comes a point when you start to think that you have tried the lot. Of course that is far from true as there are so many cuisines that I remain unfamiliar with and one that I feel guilty of not trying – Korean. Oh, I’ve had their ubiquitous fried chicken of course but little else. So when Ms McD invited Dr W and I to join her at Kogi I leapt at the chance. She had already been with a niece, who speaks Korean and has visited the country, so she had a head start. I pondered the menu with eyes bulging, there’s little comparison to the western idea of three courses and little that I recognised – until I spotted the grilled dumplings. So I ordered some of them and we all chose a dish each and an extra portion of the fried chicken. The dumplings were sublime, truly delicious and full of flavour and I will be back for them pretty soon. And my companions agreed. Dr W chose a stir fried dish of squid which was fascinating, I grabbed a bite and the squid was very tender and the sauce very spicy. I chose a minced short rib patty with rice cakes and onthedish rice. It was a strangely delicious burgerlike thing on a bed of salad, sweet and savoury at the same time, and set into the tender beef were three of the rice cakes. Now I have had rice cakes in many forms but never like this. They are oddly chewy sausage shaped things, delicately flavoured and very alien. I liked them, but I can imaging why people might not. Ms McD actually loved them and chose a dish of them stewed in a golden brown sauce with slices of oriental fish cake. Now that really was a delight, and the accompanying dishes of pickled bean sprouts and kimchi were brilliant. Of course we had some fried chicken and it was good and generous but uneventful. Our mistake, I fear, for not choosing a spicier version that was offered. Dr W had white wine, but Ms McD and I had Korean beers which were very nice indeed. I will certainly be back, and next time perhaps be more adventurous.

JOANNA LUML EY From The New Avengers’ Purdey through various incarnations including the fashion editor party animal that is Patsy Stone, Joanna Lumley is respected as an actor, an activist, a documentary maker, and more. She speaks now ahead of embarking on her first ever live tour.

O

ne of the many reasons why Joanna Lumley is so popular is that she exhibits the quality we Brits prize perhaps above all others: self deprecation. Take her initial reaction to the decision to embark on her first ever nationwide live tour, entitled It’s All About Me. With a selfeffacing grin, Joanna reveals that, “When the tour was announced, my first concern was that I would have to pay people to come. I thought, ‘We will have to close the dress circle and pay people to sit in the stalls.’

great thing about performing live is the audience. “I travel around London on the Tube, and people are constantly talking to me as if I’m their friend. They’ll say to me, ‘What we really liked about India was this…’ Every theatre on this tour will be a room full of friends. Chatting to people is pretty much what I do anyway – I’m forever doing this at charity dos. I can’t wait!” In It’s All About Me, Joanna will recount stories from every stage of her career, including such classic TV shows as

“ When I look back on all the things

I’ve done, it’s an absolutely gasp making list! ” “I once played a theatre on the south coast when we were doing a tour of Private Lives. The theatre shut the circle and the two side aisles of the stalls, so just the middle section was open. But there were still only two men, a dog and a mongoose. So I’m used to playing to sadly small audiences!” Fortunately, that will certainly not be the case on this 31date tour; Joanna will be performing to packed houses. The actress continues that, “It’s utterly thrilling that on the first day, the show was selling out across the country. At first, I thought I was scared about this tour. But now I’m so excited. I think, ‘Yeah, how lovely!’” It’s All About Me will play to her undoubted strength: her tremendous rapport with her legions of fans. The performer, who lives in London with her husband, the conductor Stephen Barlow, says she is really looking forward to connecting with audiences up and down the country. “The

Absolutely Fabulous and The New Avengers and her award winning travel programmes. Many of these anecdotes will not have been heard in public before. In addition, the live show will feature a section where she is joined on stage by friend and producer Clive Tulloh. He will pose her questions from the audience. Joanna, who has over the years worked tirelessly for a number of very worthy causes, notably the Gurkha Justice Campaign, will have absolutely no shortage of material for the live show. The actress, who in 2013 was rated one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the UK by Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio Four, reflects that, “When I look back on all the things I’ve done, it’s an absolutely gaspmaking list! “You realise that if you say ‘yes’ to jobs, you do jobs.” With characteristic modesty, Joanna adds that, “If you’re picky, you do more great work, but needs must when the devil drives!”

Joanna will be focusing on a few key roles in It’s All About Me. She will recollect that, after some years modelling and appearing in Hammer and Bond movies, her big breakthrough came in 1976. In that year, she was cast alongside Patrick McNee and Gareth Hunt as Purdey, the kickboxing crimefighter with the iconic bob hairdo, in The New Avengers. She beat 800 other actresses to the part, and it proved a major game changer for Joanna. The actress recalls that, “There had been no Avengers series for ten years. Our version just caught people’s imagination. Maybe it was time for that kind of adventure story again. But it was also ludicrous. In one episode, a rat ate some nuclear waste and became the size of a double decker bus. You want that kind of stuff!” After The New Avengers, she made a career move that took everyone by surprise, but proved an enormous hit. The actress enjoyed immense success playing the dazzlingly degenerate fashion magazine

editor Patsy Stone in Jennifer Saunders’ brilliant and still widelyadored sitcom, Absolutely Fabulous. From the very beginning, Joanna, who was handed two very BAFTA Awards for her performance as Patsy, felt sure that Absolutely Fabulous would strike a chord with viewers. “I didn’t know Jennifer at the time, but when her script was sent to me, it was the funniest thing I’d ever read. I had no doubts about it.” In the live show, the performer will also talk about her acclaimed TV travel programmes. “People love the travel shows,” observes Joanna, who has travelled to places as diverse as India, Egypt, Greece and The Northern Lights. “They come up and tell me that they love the fact that I don’t talk down to the people I meet on my travels. I don’t find food revolting or customs silly just because they’re from other countries. People tell me they love being with me on these journeys and say they learn things they didn’t know beforehand. That’s very flattering.” Scrolling back through this extraordinary career, one of the reasons for its incredible longevity may well be Joanna’s very appealing ability not to take herself too seriously. According to the actress, “It’s great to be able to find fun in things. The ability to send yourself up helps you survive. If you don’t have that, you can get gloomy.” Joanna Lumley: It’s All About Me, Brighton Dome, Thursday 8 November, 7.30pm, £61/41/31, brightondome.org

PROJECT

BRIGHTON PDSA’s Brighton Pet Hospital is 25!

P

DSA’s Brighton Pet Hospital, which runs a busy service on Robertson Road, Preston Park, celebrated its 25th Birthday last month (August). Every year Brighton’s Pet Hospital treats nearly 54,000 sick and injured pets, treating around 110 pets on an average working day. It costs over £1 million to run the hospital a year, but the veterinary charity receives no government funding and relies entirely on the goodwill of their supporters. Vet Nurse at Brighton PDSA Pet Hospital, Chloe Greenland, said: “We’re all extremely proud of the lifesaving work that takes place in our hospital every single day. Days can be tough and extremely busy but knowing we’re changing lives by helping the muchloved pets of people in need makes it all worthwhile.”

“ We’re all extremely proud of the life saving work that takes place in our hospital every single day. ”

The Brighton Pet hospital celebrated its 25 years of saving sick and injured pets in need on Monday 20 August, during the national charity’s centenary year. In 1917, the charity’s founder, Maria Dickin, first set up a dispensary for sick animals of the poor in London’s East End. Over the following years its work spread in response to public demand and PDSA now operates 48 hospitals across the UK, supported by a national chain of 130 shops and a dedicated army of volunteers. A brief history of PDSA in Brighton From the first basic dispensary in London's Whitechapel, Maria Dickin took PDSA to other towns and cities by way of a horse drawn ambulance, treating animals and educating adults and children in the proper care of them. During the 1920s and 30s motorised dispensaries were covering up to 80 miles each day and permanent clinics were being established in towns and cities countrywide, of which Brighton was one. The first mention of a PDSA site in Brighton was in the 1927 Annual Report, listed as 47b Portland Street, and an additional LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

premises was opened in 1928 at 93 Upper Lewes Road. In 1930 the Portland Street site was moved to 3 Lower Bedford Street and remained open until around 1943. In 1932 the Upper Lewes Road site was moved to 16 Oxford Street where it remained as PDSA’s main centre in Brighton for many years. A third site was launched in 1937 in 3 Montague Place, then this was moved to 42 Station Road in around 1951. The site is believed to have remained open until around 1993. In 1978 the main Oxford Street site was developed – the premises were enlarged and modernised to accommodate a shop at 16 Oxford Street and a veterinary centre next door at 14/15 Oxford Street. The case load in the final 12 months was just over 34,000. In 1993 the current Pet Hospital was opened at 2 Robertson Road, and the Oxford Street and Station Road premises closed. All PDSA resources were moved to the new stateofthe art building, which houses six consulting rooms, two operating theatres, xray and isolation facilities, and recovery kennels for both cats and dogs. In 1998 the dedicated team provided more than 36,000 free treatments, including 1,200 surgical procedures. In 2011 the building was partially refurbished, to update and further modernise the facilities. The hospital has recently benefited from a refurbished reception area. Local support PDSA has received large amounts of support from the local community over the years. Mrs Olive Taylor began collecting tin cans and scrap metal for PDSA in 1968 and continued to do for more than 30 years, eventually presenting PDSA with a cheque for £30,000 in 2001. She has made several further donations to PDSA over the years. In 2001 bikers held a rally of over 100 Brighton motorcycle club members who took part in a sponsored ride from Box Hill to Brighton PDSA, in honour of the late Mary Eales, raising over £1,500. In 2005 Jean Kettle was also named as PDSA Volunteer of the Year. Jean is a lifelong supporter of PDSA and started volunteering in 1975 to thank PDSA for treating her pets. In total she has helped raise nearly £90,000 for PDSA. www.pdsa.org.uk
