Carping coy

I

s there anything more insidiously corrosive to a life than the idea of being ‘coy’? Probably. But it’s still rotten. When I was a kid I was at one of those family holiday places – you know the kind, there’s art classes and computer classes and your brother learns how windsurf. There is also a show put on every night by the staff, apart from the last night when it becomes the turn of campers to ‘entertain’. Essentially this was just the chance to work the staff extra hard as they shoehorned us all into templates of set show pieces. I remember being thrilled when I was asked to be Olivia NewtonJohn in a dated template of her 80s hit tune ‘Let’s Get Physical’, leading an exercise class. Of course I said ‘no’. I couldn’t be keen, but fully hoped that they would implore me so that I could say ‘yes’. And they put a wig on a dude and he did it brilliantly to great applause. All the black and white movies lovingly watched with grandparents said – and even the more recent films agreed – that to get what you wanted you had to be won over. What they don’t say is that this works best for a narrative arc and isn’t really applicable to real life. It’s not ‘unfeminine’ or ‘pushy’ to say what you want and ask for it. Being coy is pants. And it puts our own destinies into the hands of others, and asks them to be mind readers. So, when you know what you want – tell people! Do that thing! Just like the kids in the Music Marathon (p9), Neil Innes’ constant creative adventuring (p7), and some of your favourite people. They’re not coy.

B

righton has long been a centre for dancers and lovers of dance so the imminent arrival of the Richard Alston Dance Company should be a cause for celebration. And indeed this tour celebrates the fifty years that Richard Alston has been making dances. Mid Century Modern is a mixture of brand new pieces and extracts chosen from the past decades of Alston’s choreography. The tour comes to Theatre Royal Brighton on Tuesday 9 October and will feature a brand new piece, Alston’s Brahms Hungarian; set to Brahms’ Hungarian Dances – music that Alston had planned on choreographing to for years. Brahms’ piano pieces will be played live on stage by RADC’s outstanding pianist Jason Ridgway. Full of passionate drive and joyful gusto, the dance is swept along by the energy of this hugely popular music. Costumes will be designed by awardwinning designer Fotini Dimou with lighting by Zeynep Kepekli, both regular collaborators with Alston. Another brand new dance will be premiered by Associate Choreographer Martin

1

Lawrance, inspired by Drumming Remix, a reworking of music by American Master Steve Reich, with costumes by Jeffry Rogador and lighting by Zeynep Kepekli. This piece will accompany a celebratory revival of Proverb, one of

“ The dance is swept along by the energy of this hugely popular music ” Alston’s most telling choreographies, to the serene and cool vocal work of Steve Reich. Created in 2006 as part of Reich’s seventieth birthday celebrations at London’s Barbican, this is the very first time the piece has been revived. Also in the programme will be choreography by Alston which dates all the way back to 1970 is Nowhere Slowly, Rainbow Bandit (1977) and the joyful finale from Signal of a Shake (music Handel, 1999). The programme shows the range of achievement by this veteran, but still lively, artist. www.atgtickets.com/brighton* 0844 871 7650*

ANDREW KAY Local wins out

L

ocal news this week as we head into the autumn season. And nothing celebrates that season more than the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival which started over the weekend. The festival is now in its 15th year and over those years has made its cause the promotion of the city as a gastronomic destination, a centre of excellence for people on both sides of the table who believe in local and seasonal produce – and there is little doubt that those aims have been achieved. Despite the fact that the Michelin organisation has yet to award one of their much coveted stars to a restaurant here, there are certainly many other enviable awards that have been won – and I for one have little doubt that with some of the best chefs in the country having chosen the city as their place to cook, one of those stars will be shooting our way very soon. The festival has always been about the very best that the city and the county has to offer. It has highlighted not only chefs but producers, from farmers to winemakers – and we have not only talked about it not just here and in the UK but globally. I say ‘we’ because I have been involved since the second year, working with the team to create exciting food events and travelling the world to take that message far and wide. The International Chef Exchange concept has seen us across Europe and also in Canada and the Caribbean – and in return we have welcomed chefs from all of those countries, here to share their passions and expertise. This year the festival has moved away from the large scale market formats of previous years. They are huge events that require vast amounts of both time and money to stage, and in the current climate are perhaps no longer sustainable, especially for a small CIC with a not for profit format. But our events have now become more focused on venues, working with partners to create the most appealing programme of great food and great fun too. The city’s top restaurants, and by that I do not mean the most expensive – that was never our objective, now play host to exciting dinners, tastings and tutorials that have a wideranging appeal, from those of us who like a few drinks to those who enjoy sampling the most inventive, experimental and exciting moves in the world of food and drink.

“ The promotion of the

city as a gastronomic centre of excellence ”

NEIL INNES He’s one of two writers credited with contributing to Monty Python’s Flying Circus not in the core team – the other being Douglas Adams – he’s the heart of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, he’s a musician, a singer, a comedian – and a master at evading questions from Victoria Nangle Hi Neil, how are you today? A bit like yesterday – a complex bustle of electrochemicals and molecular indecision. What was the most recent thing that fascinated you, and how did it go about attracting your attention? Being asked “how are you today?” It came by email… I've got to admit, I'm thoroughly enamoured with The Rutles, and your CV reads chronologically like a comedy musicalcreative adventurer. If you had one day's time travel to a day in your own life, when would you most like to immersively revisit? Well, I suppose I have reached that age when it’s almost impossible not to have done

Is there anyone on the current musical and comedic landscape would you like to work with, and what do you think might come out of such a creative hub? Not particularly. But I would have loved to work with Stan Laurel. Had we been partners I’m sure I would have put on a lot of weight and grown a little moustache.

(Precisely as described in Komedia’s brochure). What was the last question you were asked (not by me) – and what was the answer you received? If my memory serves me well, it was: “What would you like for breakfast?” I think I must

have gone a bit rhetorical: “What would I like for breakfast?” because the answer I gave was: “Yes what would you like for breakfast!” Neil Innes (Presented by Dictionary Pudding), Komedia, Tuesday 8 October, 7.30pm, £17.50, komedia.co.uk

May I suggest an absurdist musical working with Bill Bailey (although I am aware I may be overstepping a mark here, and if so I really do apologise)? Of course you may! I love Bill Bailey’s humour and he’s a great musician – even though he has played on stage with the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah

“ I would have loved to work with

Stan Laurel. Had we been partners I’m sure I would have put on a lot of weight and grown a little moustache ” quite a lot – but which “day”? That’s a tough one. I’ll go for any Tuesday. And what are you most looking forward to in your own future? The end of this Q and A. You have been described as 'The Seventh Python', and have a plethora of impressive collaborations – do you have a collaboration process in how you work with others at all? I find the simplest way to collaborate is to avoid working on your own. I have been immensely fortunate in the past to have worked with some wonderfully talented people who happily, also seemed keen to avoid working on their own.

Band – Shepherd’s Bush Empire 2007… What might we expect when we come and see you at Komedia in October? “Flawless sincerity, powerful drama, awardwinning comedy and a sweet ukelele marmalade flesh out an entirely honest but otherwise unpretentious musical bouquet with a robust hint of vanilla and a lingering aftertaste of red currants. Good with children and animals. If I could describe what it is I do on stage in a sentence or two, or even a cleverly constructed paragraph, then there would be absolutely no need for me to go on stage and do it.” LATEST | 7

PROJECT BRIGHTON Fast & furious Music Marathon gives young musicians opportunity to perform at Brighton Dome

C

alling musicians and singers aged 1025! Brighton Dome is hosting a special fundraising event for encore and Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival, supporting the next generation of musical talent in Brighton & Hove. Musicians and singers aged 10 25 will need to register before Mon 17 Sep to take part in the Music Marathon (Sat 17 Nov): performers will be free to play or sing whatever they like… as long as it’s suitable for a family audience! Over 4,000 young people of all abilities are taught by Brighton & Hove Music & Arts (BHMA) each week in every Brighton & Hove school, and encore is the fundraising network for all the young

“ A fastpaced, exciting and surprising musical mix ” musicians supported by BHMA. Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival united with BHMA in July 2017, and together they provide music and arts education, performance and touring opportunities for children and young people citywide. Bec Britain, Project Manager for Music Marathon, describes the event as “fast, furious and entertaining!”: “There’s a powerful message in young musicians and singers who’ve received support publicly fundraising to ensure the next generation can have the same opportunities. “Anyone aged between 1025 who is confident to perform in front of an audience for 5 or 10 minutes can register. We want this event to be accessible to musicians, singers and music producers and will welcome any genre, so performers can be solo or part of a group and acoustic or amplified (as long as they can plug into a basic backline and play with no sound check!). For performers, this is a great opportunity to play or sing at Brighton Dome (after all, you never know who’s watching) and to be involved in what we hope will be a really dynamic event. “Our 8hour marathon is made up of lots of performers each playing short slots back to back. The idea is that they are literally queuing up to perform and handing straight from one to the next. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

It should create a fastpaced, exciting and surprising musical mix.” BIMM Brighton are sponsoring and supporting the event: “For 17 years BIMM Brighton have been dedicated to helping talented young musicians from the local area prepare for a long and sustainable career in music. We are proud to support the Brighton Dome Music Marathon and the next generation of musical talent in Brighton & Hove.” The Music Marathon funds will provide support for: • The Hardship Fund for young musicians who could not otherwise afford to be involved in music making and lessons. This includes attending orchestras, ensembles and going on tour. • Orchestra 360, an inclusive ensemble with specialist teaching, adapted instruments and performance opportunities. • MasterClasses offering talented young musicians individual tuition that could make all the difference to their future career. • Specialist instruments purchase and maintained for all BHMA ensembles. • SPECTRUM music events, nurturing local music talent and providing affordable concerts in a professional setting. • Bespoke creative learning projects working with young musicians. SPECTRUM, Brighton Dome’s music project dedicated to nurturing and cultivating Brighton’s vibrant music scene (supported by The Pebble Trust and GM Building) will also be represented on the day, as musicians who have performed at previous SPECTRUM concerts will be returning to Brighton Dome to take part in the Music Marathon themselves. Music Marathon is supported by The Pebble Trust and BIMM Brighton. Music Marathon is on Sat 17 Nov, 10am6pm at Brighton Dome Foyer If you want to register to perform, find out more or get involved, go to brightondome.org/musicmarathon To read more about Music Marathon, Bec Britain’s full interview can be read at brightondome.org/news_blog/music_marathon Performer registration closes Mon 17 Sep #MusicMarathonBrighton

avid Beaken, a Director at Oakley New Homes, commented: “Wivelsfield is a great spot and offers the best of both worlds. Pepper Close is positioned within a traditional village setting while the ever popular Haywards Heath is just two miles away. It makes for a great location for families seeking a semirural lifestyle. Equally, commuting is accessible with trains going from Haywards Heath station in to Victoria in around 45 minutes, and less than 15 minutes in to Brighton.” Wivelsfield and the adjacent village of Wivelsfield Green are the core of the Civil Parish of Wivelsfield in the Lewes District of East Sussex. They lie in the low Weald and to the north of the South Downs National Park.

“ The style and appearance of the

houses is striking with contemporary design and floor to ceiling windows ”

Pepper Close is a collection of beautifully appointed family homes created by Gold Property Developments to compliment the local surroundings. The style and appearance of the houses is striking with contemporary design and floor to ceiling windows. There are just seven houses in this boutique development with a selection of 3 and 4bedroom detached and semidetached properties available. Each house offers something different and they range in size from 1,076 sqft to over 1,700 sqft. David Beaken continued; “This is a project we are really excited about working on. The show home is absolutely beautiful, and we can’t wait to see the response from excited viewers at the launch. The houses look really impressive when passing, and this is shown 10 | LATEST

NOW & THEN Andy Garth: Was the past better?

I

have recently acquired a 1960s white police helmet that only the Brighton Police wore in the summer months. I found this great photo of a cycling white helmeted Bobby on his beat in (I think)

“ You will never stop cars coming into the city, however many obstacles you stick in their way ”

Whitehawk in the early 1960s, and in the background cranes and building work providing more accommodation. This reminded me of the Circus Street development with its towering cranes

adding to the fantastic landscape of the city. Then I saw the next photo, which is close to the Circus development and with the robes of the old fruit and veg market visible – and also, I believe, part of the new Valley Gardens traffic scheme. Now I try not to pontificate but... really? Unfortunately you will never stop cars coming into the city, however many obstacles you stick in their way, and my own worry is that business will suffer if you make it more difficult to visit. Only us locals know the back street routes, and we can’t let those become too busy. Sorry... and off my soapbox. The photo is great as it seems more calm and tranquil – but even in 1960 there were still no parking spaces! Next week more Auction news.
