You’ve gotta laugh
I
t has been levelled at me that I can be overly comedy focussed. I see that as a good thing. In these times that seem to frequently teeter on the hysterical (in the alarming old school way), it feels right to have some level heads take a step back and reflect upon the world we live in from their own perspectives. Phil Nichol’s latest show Your Wrong (exclusive interview p8) is just such an opportunity, looking at the some of the ‘wronger’ global aspects going on, as well as a large chunk of his own experiences of simply not getting it right. It kind of bursts the bubble of anxiety, pointing out that nothing is ever perfect. Not least the grammar in that title – how long has that been bothering you? Another voice I’ve really enjoyed listening to, not least in her BBC Radio 4 show and as a frequent cohost of The Guilty Feminist Podcast, is that of Felicity Ward (exclusive interview p5). Nominated for Best Show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards this year, Ward has a show title choice partly motivated by a wish to hear posh BBC voices speak it out loud – Felicity Ward Is Busting A Nut just rolls off the tongue – she’s a delightful mix of intelligence and silliness. This is a bumper comedy issue, with two top comedians exclusively sharing their ideas, secrets and hopes, arriving just in time as we start the notice the evenings getting shorter and Summer jackets just not cutting it on a night out. Let your chuckles warm you up, and remind you of all the great laughter merchants never that far away.

FELIC ITY WAR D Nominated for this year’s Edinburgh Comedy Award, recently found on BBC Radio 4 with her own series, plus her own Netflix special, and still a regular cohost on The Guilty Feminist Podcast, Felicity Ward speaks with Victoria Nangle about tech, time and time travel. Hi Felicity, how are you today? Very good. I’m enjoying watching some young people try to pose “naturally” for their Instagram account. The awkwardness of them trying to look relaxed just looking over their shoulder, leaning on one leg, towards a clock tower is brilliant. I hope someone is making short films of them. You have been incredibly, unbelievably, timedefyingly busy in the last 12 months, with a Netflix special, your own BBC Radio 4 series, podcasts, TV appearances, international acclaim… tell us you have a secret time machine! What would you do if you had a secret time machine? I’d go back to the first town meeting of Daylight Savings’ discussions and tell them ‘no’. I’d tell them that we hate it. It makes everything worse in winter. The cows will get used to the time staying the same. As said, you have been busy. What is your favourite medium to work in and why? Live stand up is always my favourite. But The Guilty Feminist Podcast is probably the most fun for the least preparation time, so that’s ideal really: Big, fun audiences, hanging out with my mates, making new ones, and making jokes. And what would be the most useful practical tip you wish you'd been given, concerning the work and life events you have pulled off recently? Ironically, that cutting back my live workload would make me love stand up more, make me better at my job and give me the mental space to create other kinds of writing (i.e. not just stand up material). When you first start out in stand up you have to get as
much stage time as possible and that is literally the only way to get better, but having the mentality that you need to keep doing every gig (ten years later), or keep up with
An alarm that blocked my phone until I got out of bed, had breakfast, had a shower, and meditated. That’s actually not a bad idea… Felicity Ward 2018 ©®
“ I’m enjoying watching some young
people try to pose “naturally” for their Instagram account ” other peoples’ schedules (when I didn’t have the capacity to do that) was a lie I told myself. Part of your Radio 4 show explores your relationship with technology – what invention yet to appear would make your life easier, and why?
What is your favourite part of your tour show when you perform it? I’ve spent two years writing this show in clubs so it’s pretty densely packed with jokes, but the part I get the most joy from is literally making a squeaky fart joke in the middle
of the show. I drag it on as long as I can. Once I got three minutes out of it. I've been really enjoying listening to The Guilty Feminist Podcast, with you on it. I especially like the opening of the show with "I'm a Feminist but…". What has been your most recent 'Guilty Feminist but…' moment? I’m a feminist but… recently got a big job that I’ve been working really hard towards, that felt substantial to get, as a woman, and the first thing I did was buy £150 worth of makeup and skincare products, some of which I still don’t know what they do. Who would be your dream guest on The Guilty Feminist, and what would you ask them? Julia Louis Dreyfus, and I would ask her if she could adopt me. Can you tell us anything about the sitcom pilot you're currently writing for Australian telly? It’s already written and based on a time in my life where I stopped drinking, left my fiancée and moved back in with my mother. I did a stage show called The Hedgehog Dilemma in 2012 and it’s off the back of that. What is the secret to a happy life? If I knew that I wouldn’t be a comedian. I’d be out there making millions, doing my favourite thing: telling other people how to live. Unfortunately, I haven’t figured it out yet… but I’ll let you know if it happens. No doubt, you’ll hear me banging on about it if it does. Felicity Ward Is Busting A Nut, Komedia, Wednesday 24 October, 8pm, £12/10, www.komedia.co.uk

THE
Pommery at Blanch House
Chaula’s, Brighton
W
hat’s not to love about fine champagne? So when offered a seat at a diner that paired wines from Pommery with the expertise of food historian and chef Samantha Bilton who could I refuse. The wines from the house of Pommery are very good indeed, steeped in traditions created by Madame Pommery, yes another strong woman from an age dominated by men, but also looking to the future with some innovative new ideas from their cellars. Each wine proved to be an excellent match to Sam’s dishes, and although you might struggle to fine Pommery on the supermarket shelf you will find it on wine lists around the city now and in independent merchants. Sam’s menu was created to match the wines but also to reflect classic recipes spanning several hundred years and the work of some of history’s greatest chefs. We started with crab gougere, the finest way to eat choux pastry in my view and these were exemplary, crisp buns filled with sweet white crab meat and the right amount of the musky brown flesh to make it special. Our first course was a fine rabbit rillette, all too often a disappointing dish but here made with real skill, the rabbit flavour perfectly matched by the seasoning and the texture light and creamy – I could have eaten this again and again. Next a perfectly poached slice of salmon in a crayfish infused cream sauce, vibrant with tarragon, and on the side a salad of cucumber marinated with a dash of aniseed spirit. Classic combinations finely delivered and a perfect balance to the sparkling delight in the glass. Next came a stuffed chicken thigh with potato and cabbage and a rich sauce. Give me thigh over breast any day, more flavour and better texture when cooked well and this was. Sam was certainly giving this history based menu her all, and whilst staying true to the origins she was also adding an element of modernity. Throughout Miriam, brand ambassador from the wine estate, filled us in with the history of the wines and funny tales too. Her knowledge is immense but she matches it with both wit and charm. Finally a baba, a classic yeast risen cake with rum syrup served with a rose and raspberry sorbet. Wow! What a sorbet, one to certainly attempt at home, and a perfectly structured cake too. If I had one complaint, and this is for the whole evening, it needed more rum syrup. I like a wet baba and the structure of that yeasted dough can certainly handle that. The guys at Blanch House certainly know how to stage a food event, perfect service in great surroundings. Look out for future food events on their website.

PHIL NICHOL Having just come from playing in the West End in the runaway hit Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, comedian Phil Nichol is touring his show looking at the flawed nature of the world – Your Wrong. Victoria Nangle speaks to him about playing drag, LCD Soundsystem & bad spelling queens in Toronto and have a number of drag artist friends. I used to perform as Billie Holiday in a Jazz spoof and have appeared as Bjork on occasion. As well as watching a lot of Ru Paul’s Drag Race I was inspired and shown tips by my three fellow drag artistes in the show. The other three queens are fierce but ever so friendly and helpful. I love them.
Hi Phil, how are you doing today? Hey there. I’m feeling good although I can feel a cold coming on. The move from Edinburgh Fringe to urban London is playing havoc with my senses. I love the title of your show – you've no idea how much I enjoy how much it riles me. Have you had a lot of responses to the deliberate 'Your' in the title? Yes, I received a fair amount of venom via social media about it. Which is the point really. It is supposed to make people take note and is a prank if they fall for it. Subeditors particularly hate me when they see it as they want to write (sic) after it but can’t or risk ruining the joke. Haha. It does seem perfect for a show about rejecting perfection – fabulous for endorsing personal good mental health. Nice irony. Do you find yourself adding new 'wrong' things to it on a daily basis? It’s a wonderful way to get the audience to begin accepting their own faults, showing them that they must deal with shame before I have even met them. The show has a whole new section about faith, Blind faith and synchronicity which explores the definition of ‘meaningful accidents'. Sometimes being wrong can be so very right.
ridiculous upbringing and very silly nature. It is the most personal show to date and let’s you laugh at my hilarious life without fear of retribution.
You seem to have eclipsed last year's show with more 'wrong's in the world, less global – more personal. How did this movement change your relationship with the show? All the stories and most of the examples are from true personal events from my own life. This allows us to explore the theme through my
involvement in the show come about? The producer, Nica Burns, knew of my work through the Edinburgh Comedy Award which I had been awarded in 2006 for a show entitled The Naked Racist. They were looking for a largerthanlife performer that could sing so she must have thought of me and invited me to audition.

If you HAD to do a collaborative show one year – akin to a performance threelegged race – who would be your dream collaborator and could you hazard a guess at what kind of show you might produce? I love James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem. To create something with him would be a life dream. Not sure what it would be but I have an idea for a family show about the environment using all the creatures that are being made extinct telling their stories. Finally, where is the most surprising place you've heard or been asked to sing your song 'I'm The Only Gay Eskimo’? I was on the opening night of my first stand up comedy tour of India in a club called Jazz By The Bay in Mumbai. The whole front row of the audience began singing all the words as I played the song. I was blown away. When I finished the song, I asked them how they had heard the song and, somewhat ignorantly, inquired if they had been to University in Canada or the UK. The spokesperson laughed and said ‘No, We have this thing in India called…The Internet!’ The room shook with laughter and I was in love Mumbai and India forever. STAGE The Wipers Times
A
nyone who has visited the battlefields of WWI in Northern France will know what a somber and moving experience it can be, the terrifying situation and terrible conditions endured by the troops at the front were undoubtedly horrifying, but out of that horror came a ray of hope in the form of a newspaper. The Wipers Times is Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s true and extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme. In a bombed out building during the First World War in the Belgian town of Ypres (mispronounced Wipers by British soldiers), two officers discover a printing press and create a newspaper for the troops. Far from being a sombre journal about life in the trenches, they produced a resolutely cheerful, subversive and very funny newspaper designed to lift the spirits of the men on the front line. Defying enemy bombardment, gas attacks and the disapproval of many of the top Brass, ‘The Wipers Times’ rolled off the press for two
years and was an extraordinary tribute to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. This magnificent stage adaptation of Hislop and Newman’s awardwinning BBC film of the same name received stunning reviews and enjoyed a sellout West End run. Now in this significantly important year the play is back on tour and heading to Eastbourne for the first time ever.

“The MET is thrilled to begin a partnership with Whitehawk FC by sponsoring their shirts for the 2018/19 season. We can’t wait to see the teams run out in their new MET branded kit and we are excited at the prospect of working with a grassroots, inclusive, and communityfocussed organisation. We already have plans for several events at the Terra Pura Ground, and are also looking forward to many opportunities for our students to benefit from the partnership. Through supporting The Hawks we look forward to continuing our engagement with the local community and raising awareness for both the football club and the MET.” The partnership represents the largest, most comprehensive shirt sponsorship deal for the club in the last 10 years, and the new home kit was unveiled at the Hawk’s home match, against Wingate & Finchley on Saturday, August 25. Head of Commercial at Whitehawk FC, Kevin Miller said: “I am delighted to welcome the staff and students of the MET to Whitehawk FC. As we began to discuss how we could work together it became clear that there is a tremendous opportunity for both parties to create a pioneering partnership, and the club can play an active part in creating many opportunities to pave the way for much needed experience for our region’s student population, something in the current climate we believe is essential.” whitehawkfc.com www.gbmc.ac.uk
