Winds of change

B

ig things are afoot. You can feel it in the air. It’s like the idea of shaking things up a bit has come out with the moth balls and lavender bags that keep your winter woolies safe. As if the sand of summer is finally shifting from between the toes and your not sure whether your favourite boots are still your favourite boots. Is it time for new boots? New wardrobe? New relationship? New home? New job? New ambitions? Or even simply a new cocktail? When I first moved to Brighton from London over a decade and a half ago it struck me: in London the people I knew were like moles, with their heads down, furiously burrowing in a straight line as hard as they could, set on a destination navigated only by instinct and memory. I felt that I had been like that. Until I had burrowed to the surface and asked myself if this straight line direction is still where I really want to head. And it wasn’t. In Brighton it strikes me that there are a lot more surface dwellers (if I were to continue this metaphor, which I’m going to). People who look around and frequently ask themselves questions of direction and ambition, in tune with the seasons above ground and occasionally open to the elements. In gazing at the sky we do get rained on, but we can also see that the sky’s the limit. So the winds are changing, the rains are arriving and sinking into the earth, and even our own moles are heading up to taste the change. Whether it’s a change of address or a change of favourite restaurant. Happy adventuring.

STEPHEN K AMOS Star of stand up, BBC Radio, BBC television, podcasts, and general darling – Stephen K Amos speaks exclusively with Victoria Nangle about working with Jonathan Harvey, happy surprises, confidence in mankind, and turning invisible! Hello dear Stephen, and how are you faring today? Hi, today I am feeling most agreeable. A couple of days downtime is great to recharge the batteries. It's great to hear that you're touring a new show – how are the work in progress shows going at the Edinburgh Fringe? Edinburgh is always a great way to run in and test some ideas. The fringe audiences are some of the best in the world. Surrounded by a buzz of creativity in various genres, they know what they want. You also have a Talk Show up there – please say that you're picking up new friends and contacts to guest on another series of Life: An Idiot's Guide. How much do you prep for your interviews, considering how renowned you are for mining mirth jewels when you talk to your audiences? I've been doing a live Talk Show in Edinburgh for a number of years now. It's a great way to fill the days while at the fringe and an opportunity to do something different to straight stand up. I also get a chance to talk to my friends and meet other performers. I do research with my amazing producer, always avoiding Wikipedia though! It's a lot of fun when you surprise a guest with a fact or funny story about them. Idiots Guide, may come back, in fact I think it's a great idea for a TV show. However the Talk Show, series has just been released on Audible, currently No1 comedy in Audible Australia. The second series will come out later in the year. Does a Brighton audience stand out to you as any different to those you engage with on the rest of your tour? I love Brighton and I have fond memories of playing various comedy clubs there over the

years. Notably the Komedia, one of the best in the country. I remember fondly the Theatre Royal and having local boy Seann Walsh as my tour support years ago! Look at him now! I even went for a drink with Chris Eubank who was in the audience! I always enjoy your work with BBC radio. How did you find it writing collaboratively with Jonathan Harvey on What Does The K Stand For? I've been a long time admirer of Jonathan Harvey and his work. Many years ago, we said it'd be fun to do something

and you sounded delighted, having been brought breakfast in bed. What was the last treat you received that you didn’t expect? My nephew made me a mug in his pottery class at school which was very special and totally unexpected. Breakfast in bed seems like such a distant memory now. If I want a surprise treat, I'd have to do it myself! Your shows manage to combine a genuine warmth without ignoring the topical challenges in the world. How tricky is it to maintain that

“ I remember fondly the Theatre Royal

and having local boy Seann Walsh as my tour support years ago! ” together. The series was initially based on my book 'I Used To Say My Mother Was Shirley Baddey'. Thankfully we have a very similar sense of humour and he has a great way of injecting pathos and drama into a funny situation. Hopefully, we'll get to work on another project again soon. Will there be new series of either of these, or anything new in the works that I can look forward to hearing you trip the airwaves with? I'm currently working on a show for BBC2, which I'll reveal soon. I'm also making a pilot for American TV. We're currently editing the second season of the Talk Show and in negotiations for an audio book. Plus, I'm touring extensively across Europe, UK, Australia and the US. So... very busy and mustn't grumble! I'm just humbled and grateful that people seem to like what I do. Last time we spoke (a few years ago) it was your birthday

balance, considering the current political climate? It's always a fine line for me as I try to navigate the stresses in the world and my desire to put on a laughter filled show. However, we are constantly changing and for me the last 4 years have been pretty intense. I'm now questioning a lot of things and finding another level of comedy. As long as I have a connection with the audience, then we're heading in the right direction. Who or what keeps you smiling in the face of adversity? Never losing faith in your fellow man. The good overwhelming outweighs the bad. Yes things are sent to try us, yes we will experience hurt and pain. We all have a story to tell

and it depends on how you react to things. Finally – you have a superpower for one day only. What is it and what adventure will you have with it? I'd like to be invisible. Then I could go anywhere in the world. Sneak into pharmaceutical laboratories, into banks, into tech companies and governments around the globe. My mission would be to find out all the things they aren't telling us. Reset the balance sheets, expose secrets and lies. This rich earth of ours can give us so much more. Stephen K Amos: Bouquets and Brickbats, Komedia, Tuesday 13 November, 8pm, £29/17.50, www.komedia.co.uk

The Spice Circuit

O

ne of the finest things that happens in the city’s gastronomic world is the sense of camaraderie that has grown between so many of those involved. Chefs, restaurateurs, food retailers, wine and spirit makers, farmers of all kinds and manufacturers too – all playing nicely together. And this has for years now been best seen at Brighton & Hove Food & Drink festival events. The organisation, now in its 15th year, has encompassed that modern trend of the pop up, and our best chefs are often willing to let guest chefs popup in their venues and create exciting solo and collaborative events. One such pairing has been between Chef Kanthi Thamma of Spice Circuit and Stephen Edwards at Etch, Steve willingly giving over the home of his fine dining experiences to Kanthi who brings his immense skill at spicing and regional Indian cuisine but embraces the modern styling of Steve’s fine dishes. On this occasion Kanthi had prepared a menu of fine examples of how this pairing has influenced his cooking. We started with a new gin blend created for Kanthi by Sarah Thompson of Blackdown Spirits, a spiky ginger forward blend of botanicals that went down extremely well when mixed with dry ginger ale. Each of the following dishes was named by region and main ingredient. Allepycoconut was a tantalisingly fine creamy broth served withe a crisp tapioca cracker. Pondicherrycrab came as beautifully formed spherical croquettes nestling on a toasted coconut crumb. Coorgpork showed us how belly should be served, tender and yielding to the lightest touch and brilliantly vibrant with spice. Mangalorepotato, well, we both declared that we could eat an awful lot of this, I dined of course with Mrs T who puts the G in G&T. Chettinarlamb again showed chef Kanthi’s skill – perfect racks, finely spiced so that the meat flavours could sing out across the spicing. Finally Goaegg, a dish that I have personally pestered Kanthi to make for me for several years now, a layered batter pudding sweet with jaggery, that divinely fudgey Indian sugar. I first tasted Bebinca in Goa and this brought back many happy memories. Each dish was brilliantly paired with wines by the skillful sommelier at Etch – another fine example of food creatives playing nicely together. Hats off to them all.

F

or the last six months or so Latest CIC has been involved in a Heritage Lottery funded project called Live & Let Live. The core of this is celebrating the diversity of the city and the heritage that is attached to this. And in our first part we have clearly focused on the LGBT+ community and the decade that closely followed on from the partial decriminalisation of homosexual acts between men. It’s been a magical experience and by casting our net wide through the magazine and through social media we have met some amazing people, people who shared their social experiences of that age, some who were the movers and shakers on the political scene and some who were at the core of the popular cultural scene from clubs through music, theatre and on to comedy. Some even managed to combine two of those elements and some three. One of the highlights has been meeting members of a collection of women who together back in the 1980s were known as Siren. We first met Jane Boston who arrived with a bundle of amazing poster, fliers and a vinyl album. She talked with great passion about those early days, of performing in the band, touring around Europe and writing their theatre pieces – and all of it strongly political, yes ticking three boxes in one fell swoop.

And judging by her presence there was probably a strong thread of humour in there. It wasn’t easy for them, they were attacked before, after and during gigs but something drove them on. The good news is that Siren have reformed, recording together and performing live, and you can catch them this October. I

TOM ODELL The former Brighton BIMM student first made his mark touring the local open mic circuit. Now, he's playing the Brighton Centre, with a new album in tow, Jubilee Road. Jeff Hemmings caught up with him.

T

here are some, whose lack of generosity of spirit is topped up by industrial strength bile, who simply cannot abide Tom Odell, the singer songwriter. Back in 2013, The NME notoriously awarded Odell's debut album no stars out of ten. That's right, ZERO. “I wish I could say there’s a place in Hell reserved for Tom Odell", said the

reviewer. "There’s not. Just loads more Brits. He’ll be all over 2013 like a virulent dose of musical syphilis”. Harsh, and most definitely not fair. But, at least The NME was right in the sense that, once Lily Allen had ‘discovered’ him, Odell would soon become everywhere. The song ‘Another Love’ became a smash, the album went to number one, and Odell was literally everywhere for a while. Underneath the hype and spite there was an obvious talent, one whose songs resonated with millions. One who had worked for it the old fashioned way, writing prolifically, and playing anywhere that would have him. Album number three Jubilee Road is about to be released, a tour of the UK shortly to be undertaken, and the former Brighton BIMM student sounds like he is in a good place, and his enthusiam for

Brighton, music, and life shows no bounds. He's obviously excited by the prospect of the new album

young performer to do that. It puts you in such good stead, whatever the venue you are playing. Some pubs would be

“ I learnt to perform at open mics. I

can’t recommend any more highly to any young performer to do that ” being heard, and visiting Brighton again, a place where it truly came together. "Brighton is the show that all my family always go to. It’s the one where I’m probably the most nervous for. I’m always most nervous when I know people in the audience." Born and raised in Chichester, Odell attended Seaford College before heading to Brighton to enrol at BIMM, eventually becoming perhaps its most famous alumni. But first, there was the small matter of learning his craft... “My first ever performance in Brighton was in a pub, three days after I arrived. It was an open mic. I have to be honest, I think I did them all. I must have done 40 to 50 open mics in pubs. Anywhere that would have me, I would drag my keyboard along and play. “It’s where I completely learnt my trade. I learnt to perform at open mics. I can’t recommend any more highly to any

awful, but some would be incredible. It also taught me how to write songs, and getting feedback. It’s brutal, but that’s what you want.” Reared on Elton John records, and learning to play classical piano from age 11, music is in his blood, and there's nothing more he likes than to perform live, be it in a pub, or in a large arena. “We never really did a gig in between size in Brighton. We went from pubs all around Brighton to The Haunt, just before my first album came out, and then next time it was the Brighton Centre. I always pinch myself that I am playing there. I used to cycle past it and think it was completely unobtainable.” Jubilee Road is definitely a more optimistic affair than his previous two albums, works that were littered with failed relationships and bad living. Songs such as ‘If You Want To Love Somebody’ and ‘Wedding Day’ feature his tradmark “joy tinged with melancholy”, and there is a loose concept that permeates throughout. “I wrote it all in one location, in the living room of this house, on this street. I lived there for a few years, and the characters in the songs are very inspired by the people who live in this road.” Tom Odell, Brighton Centre, Thursday 25 October, 6.30pm, from £30.65, brightoncentre.co.uk

“ Great postcards but a bit odd to celebrate the demise of a building ”

The examples here are unusual and collectible, with the first photo showing an original bird’s eye view of part of the newly built Patcham Estate, taken in the late 1930s. If you look carefully to the left of

the middle of the photo you can pick out the Patcham Clock Tower that is at the start of Mackie Avenue. The second photo is a pair of postcards from June 1909 showing the raging fire, and sadly the remains of the Abbey brewery site, on the Eastern Road with Kemp Town Railway Station in the background of the top card, and in the bottom card Brighton College. Great postcards but a bit odd to celebrate the demise of a building. The last photo is an odd lot but very sweet as it is a card jewellery box from R T Barfoot of 62 North Street Brighton. Inside are four silver plated football medals that seem to never have been presented to the recipients from Brighton Hove and Sussex Grammar School in 1927. All fab items with low reserves. PROJECT BRIGHTON BTN BikeShare celebrates its first birthday

B

righton and Hove’s awardwinning bike share scheme, BTN BikeShare, celebrates a year of success with better than anticipated usage figures, multiple scheme expansions and a city of happy riders. Since its launch on 1 September 2017, 53,591 BTN BikeShare users have made 347,234 trips across the city, collectively riding for a total of 680,624 miles – the equivalent distance of 27 trips around the world (and then some).

“ Further expansion is planned for later in the year following the arrival of an additional 120 new bikes ”

In response to user demand, the Brighton & Hove City Council and Coast to Capital funded scheme expanded its boundaries to the east and west, opening several new docking stations including King Alfred leisure centre and Hove Lagoon. Further expansion is planned for later in the year following the arrival of an additional 120 new bikes, making it easier for more users to get riding. Based on user figures, the American Express and Life Natural Spring Water sponsored scheme is believed to be one of the country’s bestperforming bike share scheme outside of London, LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

becoming a staple for residents and visitors alike. BTN BikeShare aims to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle and provide a sustainable, environmentally friendly mode of transport. One BTN BikeShare user, Martin, says: “I get to explore places I’ve not been before, despite living here for 16 years! I’ve used the scheme since day one – I love that it promotes sustainable transport by encouraging more people to cycle.” Another Brighton bike share enthusiast, Marilena, adds: “It’s so easy. I no longer have to worry about my bike being stolen or breaking down. And it’s social – my wife and I love going on bike rides together.” Tim Caswell, owner of Hourbike, the company operating the scheme, said: “Community is at the heart of the bike share scheme and we’re delighted that it has been fully embraced by the people of Brighton and Hove. It’s been brilliant watching locals and visitors support the bikes, choosing to cycle as a healthy and sustainable way to get around the city. We’re excited for the scheme to grow and look forward to celebrating many more birthdays!” Chair of the Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, Cllr Gill Mitchell, added: “It’s great to see the popularity of the bike share scheme which means it can expand to benefit more people in more places. We’re hoping to encourage even more people to try cycling during Cycle September and enjoy a sustainable and healthy way of getting around the city.” About BTN BikeShare in association with Life Natural Spring Water and co sponsored by American Express – www.btnbikeshare.com
