MUSIC CITY & LIVE @ LATEST MUSICBAR. Rainbow has been described as dystopian rave and being harder than ecological collapse. Neither do this live show justice! Le Pavement offer immersive soundscapes with spoken word motifs. The Green Door Store

•TUES 30• TOVE STYRKE

Swedish pop sensation Tove Styrke is on a roll. Her third album ‘Sway’ was released in May, received almost universal praise and should feature across the board on the end of year lists. She’s recently toured with Lorde and Katy Perry too. Praised by Lorde, Sam Smith, Clean Bandit and Chainsmokers, Tove Styrke could well be your new favourite artist by the end of the night! Patterns

•SUN 4• VALLEY MAKER & MT. JOY

Austin Crane AKA Valley Maker has just released his new album ‘Rhododendron’ to rave reviews. It is an intimately absorbing and understated political album about human immigration and immigration. •WEDS 31• WEAKENED FRIENDS & BEACH RIOT

•SUN 4• HATER, BLOOM & MOON PANDA

Having released their ‘Common Blah’ album in October, Weakened Friends are bringing their fuzzy indie rock to town. Expect a set full of searing guitars, catchy melodies and a wall of feedback. The support comes from Beach Riot. Like Weakened Friends, they are purveyors of scuzz indie. Is will be anything by blah! The Hope

Haters have the ability, and foresight, to take what they like from the music they love, indiepop, post-punk and classic rock, and create something that feels timeless and contemporary. Expect to hear plenty from their new album ‘Siesta’. Local skewed pop outfit Bloom are supporting along with Moon Panda. Expect an evening of swoon pop, with the emphasis on swoon! The Hope and Ruin

•WEDS 31• FREYA RIDINGS

•TUES 6• LC PUMPKIN, ADAM + ELVIS & MATT FINUCANE

Pop balladeer Freya Ridings bring her brutally honest and siren like vocals to The Haunt. Her songs are filled with longing and regret, but also hope. This is something for lovers of Florence and the Machine! Freya Ridings is definitely one to watch in 2019. Miss this at your peril! The Haunt

LC PUMPKIN are masters at lo-fi indie pop. Wonky keyboards, fuzzy banjos and hypnotic drum loops will feature heavily, to create gloriously catchy songs that, given the chance, could become the soundtrack to your life. Support comes from Adam & Elvis who have recently supported Fat White Family and Matt Finucane who craft mesmerising art-rock. The Hope & Ruin

•WEDS 31• ARC, PHIL DURRANT & MARTIN VISHNICK

ARC are have been performing since 1988, releasing three acclaimed album. Their music has been compared to horror film scores, filled with dramatic and sinister tones, but full of piquant melodies. IT’S ASTOUNDING

Time warp over to Theatre Royal Brighton as the legendary musical extravaganza Rocky Horror Show returns with stars Joanne Clifton, Ben Adams & Stephen Webb

S

ince it first opened in London in June 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show has become the world’s favourite rock ‘n’ roll musical, having been performed worldwide for 45 years in more than 30 countries and translated into over 20 languages. This critically acclaimed stunning new production is now back by public demand and returns to its spiritual home in Brighton for a three week Christmas season from Thursday 13 December 2018 to Saturday 5 Jan 2019. This classic musical extravaganza will star West End star Stephen Webb as Frank, Strictly Come Dancing Champion Joanne Clifton as Janet and a1’s Ben Adams as Brad. The smash hit show features all of the famous musical numbers, including Sweet Transvestite, Science Fiction/Double Feature, Dammit Janet and, of course, the timeless floor filler, The Time Warp. Joanne Clifton said: ‘I've always loved Rocky Horror. I learnt the Time Warp in my dance classes in Grimsby when I was 4 years old ... 30 years later and I’ll be jumping to the left on the actual Rocky Horror stage, I can't quite believe it!’ Ben Adams added: ‘Performing in Rocky Horror is a dream come true - I love the show so much it inspired me to write my own musical Eugenius! Joanne and I make quite a team and I’m sure that the whole cast will be raising the roof night after night as we perform for all the amazingly devoted Rocky fans. Bring on the stilettos!’ If you haven’t seen it before, Rocky Horror Show tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank ’n’ Furter by chance when their car breaks down

outside his house whilst on their way to visit their favourite college professor. It’s an adventure they’ll never forget, with fun, frolics, frocks and frivolity, bursting with timeless songs and outrageous outfits. It is a guaranteed party, which famously combines science-fiction, horror, comedy and music while encouraging audience participation meaning, of course, getting dressed in the most outrageous fancy dress. Ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, Rocky Horror Show is the boldest bash of them all. But be warned, this show has rude parts!

andrew kay dines out BEEFED UP

T

hose readers who believe that my life is one of champagne and caviar could not be more wrong. Of course there are those high flying moments of gastronomic delight, but I have simple tastes to add balance and I’m no snob as I proved to myself last weekend. The occasion, a trip to see the band Siren, a lesbian punk band that has recently reformed almost 40 years on. In preparation I dressed in T shirt and jeans, wanting to blend in and reflect that punk ethic, and I caught the bus over to Hove. I had been busy all day and failed to eat properly before setting off so arriving early and feeling peckish I decided to grab a bite to eat. There were plenty of options around but many were going to take too long and I was certainly in the frame of mind to stick with the mood that a punk gig was giving me. Inspiration struck, back in the day, by which I mean the late 70s, I thought burger, how often pre or post gig we would lurch into a burger joint and indulge in the American classic, and here in Brighton that usually means Grubbs. Fortunately there is one close to Palmeira Square so in I went and quickly decided on a double chilli burger with a side of fries and a can of Diet Coke. Yes, it’s true, I can be “street” when the mood takes me. Unlike a fast food joint, at Grubbs you have to wait whilst they cook both your meat and your fries, not long but long enough to believe that your meal is freshly prepared. So about 7 minutes later it was ready. My first observation was that it was all piping hot, a great start. My second observation was that the fries had not been pre-salted, a real downside to the better know burger outlets, I also liked the fact that there was vinegar, being northern I like vinegar on my chips and that’s another failing of many American fast food joints. On to the burger itself, it was good, nicely cooked and not greasy, the bun was average, but I tire of being told that my bun is artisan or brioche or sourdough. This was exactly what I had ordered, a trip down memory lane made more complete by an unpretentious bit fo foodie nostalgia and not overpriced either. It’s easy to see why Grubbs has stood the test of time. Grubbs, St James’ Street, York Place, Western Road & Lewes Road

LANDLORDS WITHOUT A KHALIL LANDLORDS WITHOUT KHALIL THERE IS SUCH THING AS RENT WITHOUT RISK IN HOVE, ACTUALLY Forget what you’ve heard: rent without risk is not only possible in Hove, it can be guaranteed. You read that right: your rent can be guaranteed. What’s more I can guarantee that you also won’t need to lift a finger to achieve this. You can leave all the legwork to me – all that I ask is for you enjoy the returns. And I’m sure you will. KHALIL’S RENT GUARANTEE SCHEME Sounds good – then why not drop by for a coffee and a chat? You’ll find me at 22 Western Road, close to the seafront and surrounded by the Regency splendour that makes Hove so attractive. I’ve been making landlords lives easier locally for many years – but I’ve saved my very best until now. Imagine your Hove property continuing to pay you rent even when it’s empty. Imagine enjoying the rental returns without the runaround of the rental process. Imagine making money from your property every day without the hassle of everyday property maintenance.

• • •

HOW MY GUARANTEE SCHEME WORKS HARD TO MAKE RENTING EASY FOR YOU I offer a very simple way to take the insecurity, hassle and commitments out of renting. I’ll lease your property for a few years at a very attractive rate. During this time, I guarantee your rent. It will be paid regardless of whether your property is occupied or not. There are no management fees and no hidden costs. I handle all the day to day maintenance and I find and manage your tenants. And at the end of the lease I’ll return your property to you in the same condition as it was when we started our relationship. You can always choose to rinse and repeat, enjoying hassle and costfree letting for another five years.

• • • • • • • •

It’s a simple and effective scheme. And it has been delighting local landlords for nearly three years now. Why not come by and find out how it can work for you? After all, not many things in life are guaranteed, but your rental income certainly can be.
