hen I first moved to Brighton from “that London” one of the things that I wanted to do was get to know not only the city but the county, both east and west too. At the weekends I would head off to listen to folk music in Firle, do country dancing in Newick and of course visit the huge number of beautiful country houses and gardens. None thrilled me more than Leonardslee where sensational planting and lakes created thrilling vistas – and there were wallabies too! Sadly the estate was purchased by a man who not only left it to fall ino ruin but finally abandoned it – both the house and the grade I listed gardens – and of course those wallabies. Well the good new is that a successful business woman and entrepreneur has bought the estate, and after huge investment in both gardens and structure has rescued the whole caboodle – and rather brilliantly! The gardens will open to the public next spring but she has already installed a brilliant young chef from South Africa where she owns vineyards, wineries and restaurants and the new restaurant at Leonardslee is called Interlude. I was lucky enough to be invited along to sample the exotic tasting menu, and some of her very good South African wines, at a lunch of epic proportions and gargantuan delights. Too many courses by far to list here, but executive chef Jean Delport and his brigade had certainly put their principles of local sourcing of ingredients including many foraged from the estate to the test. It was an exquisite experience, sensational dish after dish, stunning visual presentations and moments of pure silence as we relished the adventurous combinations of flavours and textures. For me the real highlights were a dish of fallow deer confit made from estate made biltong, layered with fine slices of wild mushroom, a stunning egg dish with caviar and a dessert of indulgent delight made from acorns – who would have thought ? Yes acorns. There was much much more, around 14 dishes in fact with some extraordinary breads and crackers, nut butters, fish and meat patés… yes wild flights of culinary fancy and I certainly think this will become a kitchen to watch – and as a real treat indulge in. I came away sated but at he same time craving more and I am sure more will come as the estate enjoys its renaissance. leonardsleegardens.co.uk interlude-restaurant.co.uk 01403289490
THE FULL MONTY From the cobbles of Weatherfield to the disused steel works of Sheffield, actor and director Rupert Hill talks to Vicky Edwards about being at the helm of The Full Monty which retuirns to Theatre Royal Brighton in the New Year You have directed movies, but you are best known as Coronation Street’s Jamie Baldwin and for being a previous Full Monty cast member. Does having done the show before give you any sort of advantage as a director? Yes; it gives me huge insight into the way it works. I don’t need to reinvent the wheel in every scene but there are things that I want to explore. The main thing for me was that all the female characters felt a bit secondary, so I am trying to make the relationship between the couples to be more meaningful and integral to the story.
“Wild flights of culinary fancy”
LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
Is it true that you set the cast homework so they could really understand their characters? I got the cast to watch the Ken Loach film Raining Stones. It was the film that inspired the Full Monty – they wanted to make a film that Ken Loach characters would watch. I think that’s one of The Full Monty’s strengths and it is unbelievable how relevant that film and our show feels now; payday loans, unemployment and anger at society.
9
But The Full Monty is also very funny, right? It is. But comedy is what northerners use to get by. The financial situation the characters find themselves in is desperate, but that mix of comedy and relatability makes the show part story and part party. Ken Loach meets Cabaret! Do you think the strip works better on stage than it did in the movie? I do. It is celebratory and it works better on stage because the audience become part of the scene. The guys stripping at the end feels like a defiant gesture and the crowds go wild!
“The guys stripping at the end is a defiant gesture ” How wild? I can’t imagine that I will ever experience that kind of response from an audience again. You can actually feel the sound wave hit you and it is wonderful. But I really want to earn that and for the audience to buy into the story. B
allet Theatre UK’s spectacular production, set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious music with stunning classical choreography, by the Artistic Director, Christopher Moore, reawakens the magic of the world’s favourite fairy tale. Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, Princess Aurora lived in an enchanted castle where fairies bestowed her with gifts of beauty, temperament, purity, joy and generosity. The wicked Fairy Carabosse places a curse on Aurora - to prick her finger on a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday... and die! The beautiful and kind Lilac Fairy casts a spell to counter the curse so that instead of dying Aurora fell asleep for a hundred years. Only the touch of true love’s kiss could awaken her and undo the evil spell… Now in their sixth Christmas season in Brighton, join Ballet Theatre UK’s talented young company of international dancers for a magical Christmas outing for the whole family.
THE MAGIC OF CLASSIC BALLET The enchanting fairtytale is set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious music for all the family at Brighton Dome this Christmas
“ Glittering costumes, expressive dancers . . . a pleasure to witness a production of this calibre ” Dance Europe OLIVER COOPER PRINCIPAL DANCER & ASSOCIATE CHOREOGRAPHER Who inspired you to take up Ballet? I find music emotive and therefore the ‘language’ of music, which then followed on into ballet classes. When I was about twelve, seeing Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake inspired me to want to dance professionally.
ANNA YLIAHO PRINCIPAL DANCER & ASSOCIATE CHOREOGRAPHER Who inspired you to take up ballet? My mother put me in to ballet when I was around 7 years old because I always had too much energy jumping from one place to another. To be honest I hated it at first and didn't stick with it seriously. I found my true inspiration later when I was 15 by auditioning to the Finnish National Opera Ballet school as a bet I made with my friends. By everyone's surprise, I got in. At the end of the day I just had to dance. What really hooked me was the story-telling through movement. There's nothing like it.
Do you find it challenging being one of the most notoriously difficult to perform technically out of the classical repertoire? Technically it is, in places, a huge challenge to perform Sleeping Beauty. Prior to Ballet Theatre UK’s 10th Anniversary Gala in June 2018, the thought of preparing the complete work for touring was initially quite daunting. Sleeping Beauty is one of the most famous of classical ballets and one does feel a sense of responsibility to this legacy when bringing such an iconic work on tour. However, in performance, the music, the stunning costumes, the atmosphere of the theatre and the audiences all create adrenaline and make the role, however tough both exciting and exhilarating to perform.
What do you enjoy the most about dancing “Sleeping Beauty”? Aurora is probably one of every ballerina’s dream roles. What I love the most about this ballet is it's purity. Its pure classical ballet from the start to finish. Do you find it challenging being one of the most notoriously difficult to perform technically out of the classical repertoire? It's a challenge of course but an exciting one. I can't wait to perform it! How does the characterisation of roles within the ballet come about, are there elements of mime? There are many elements of mime in Sleeping Beauty especially with Carabosse (the evil fairy) who has a crucial influence to the course of the storyline. With Princess Aurora, all the movements tell the story and reflect who she is. The dancing and mime need to have an element of sophistication showing that she is a young woman at the age of marriage but still royalty.
How does the characterisation of roles within the ballet come about, are there elements of mime? For me the characterisation of the role is something that has to come from deep inside me and the ‘Prince’ has evolved throughout the rehearsal process. Certainly mime, facial expression, definitely the costumes all help in creating character as well as giving a strong and confident performance technically. Choreographically Sleeping Beauty has several solos, which allow both the principal dancers and members of the company to display a variety of characterisation.
How do you relax away from the stage whilst on tour? I make sure I get enough sleep and do something relaxing like reading, take a walk around the town or listen to interesting podcasts. For me the best way to relax is to direct my mind and energy to something else rather than completely winding down.
How do you relax away from the stage while on tour? Whilst on tour, when there is time away from the stage i like to find a place for a coffee and something to eat and I really enjoy sitting down and having a chat and laugh. Tour is a very busy time so i try to have a meal with family whenever we are close to home.
Is there a ballet role you would really love to dance? Aurora is one of them but some of my other dream roles include Odette/Odile from Swan Lake, Carmen, Manon and Tatyana from Onegin. I love every role that's given to me and try to make them my own.
Is there a ballet role you would really like to dance? The male swan in Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, it is a role that has inspired me over many years and I feel I have a natural affinity for the characterisation. Classically the role I would most like to dance is Gennaro in Napoli . LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
