T
wo simple stories this week from the world of food and drink. It has been announced that the much feted restaurant Pascere will close on the 15th of December. Owner Amanda Menahem announced the news on social media last week and was immediately greeted by messages of disappointment and regret. It was not a decision taken easily and the restaurant is still serving delicious food created by a team that Amanda says is the best she has had. But the decision is made for strictly business reasons and in the current climate the restaurant cannot survive economically. The team will however stay together and we should all look out for future pop up events from this exciting kitchen that in so short a time gained massive praise not only locally but from the national press.

he city is full of pubs and bars of all kinds, from the traditional to the uber fashionable and I love them all in their way, well most of them anyway. For many years my favourite pub was my local, The Bugle, just off the Lewes Road. It’s one of those old school back street pubs that I would cry about were it to change. This week I heard that sad news that the landlady that I first new there, Gwen, has sadly passed away. Gwen Yorke-Johnson was a landlady of the highest order, bold, confident, bright and above all fair. I remember well joining her at the front bar where she would sometimes sit and survey her regulars. Perched on her stool, her blonde hair pinned into a neat French pleat, she would quietly hold court whilst her husband Dennis held court in the rear bar with his more sporty regulars. On one occasion I was sat with her when a very rowdy group came in and rather spoilt the quiet atmosphere. She calmly strode over and made it quite clear that if they did not modify their behaviour, volume and language they would be asked to leave. They did as they were told, such was her presence. As she returned to her stool she leant on close and whispered “Not PLU dear”. People Like Us, I loved her for that, the gentle elitism that evoked the atmosphere of the front bar. On another occasion, celebrating my birthday in fancy dress, a pirate if I remember right, I accidentally shot her with a water pistol. Cool as a cucumber she swung around and declared “You’re barred!”. I left in shame. The next day I dropped in a bunch of flowers and a note of apology. The barring was lifted. Ladies of this character and quality are few and far between, certainly on the licensed premises scene, and that is a very sad fact. Gwen was the very essence of the great British landlady and she will be remembered by her regulars for years to come.

THE POWER 100 WE ALL LOVE A LIST & THE PUBLICATION LAST WEEK OF THE BRIGHTON POWER 100 IS CERTAINLY GOING TO BE A TALKING POINT OVER THE COMING WEEKS. THE MAN WHO CHAIRED THE 2018 SELECTION NICK TAYLOR EXPLAINS
I
t gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 Brighton Power 100 inductees. I was delighted to have been appointed to preside over the Brighton Power 100 for this year`s inaugural List. Brighton is a city very close to my heart having worked here as a lawyer for over 20 years. I have had the pleasure of working with and alongside many local businesses, entrepreneurs, charities and media personalities across film, music and sport who have in some way influenced the Brighton landscape. Brighton is a vibrant seaside resort known as “London by the sea” and made up of an eclectic community with a diverse architectural history from the traditional Royal Pavilion to the modern Brighton i360. It is therefore not surprising that the inaugural list is made up of individuals who have in some way left their mark on the city (both past and present ) from a broad spectrum of skill sets. Congratulations to this year’s inductees. Nick Taylor
