VALLEY GARDENS DESIGN OR DISASTER? Tourism Alliance Chair Anne Ackord speaks out about the Valley Gardens Phase 3 proposal Dear Latest The Brighton Palace Pier along with many others based around the Old Steine have serious concerns about Brighton & Hove City Council's latest plans to change the way visitors access the centre of the city as tourists or local residents and together have started the Valley Gardens Forum to make these concerns known. The Forum is a group of central Brighton residents, public sector organisations and businesses, large & small, sharing concerns about the City Council’s plan to remodel the centre of the city. The Valley Gardens redevelopment was originally conceived as a way of enhancing access to the city centre with a shared ambition to improve the environment and enhance the local economy. The original outline scheme was widely discussed and had been broadly accepted by the community. A more detailed ‘Phase 3’ developed by consultants with council officers and presented three months ago, shatters that consensus.

Anne Ackord, Chair, Tourism Alliance, Chief Executive The Brighton Pier Group PLC

“ Nobody would argue that Brighton doesn't have a problem with traffic congestion and resulting air and noise pollution. However, the Council’s current plans would make this demonstrably worse ” Nobody would argue that Brighton doesn't have a problem with traffic congestion and resulting air and noise pollution. However, the Council’s current plans would make this demonstrably worse. In fact, it presents a deliberate policy of making it more difficult to visit a city dependent on its visitor and services economy. There is no evidence in the current Council approved ‘business case’ that the big picture and the broadest range of impacts on the economy, local environment and people's livelihoods have been considered at all. At a time when local services are starved of resources and existing public infrastructure is not being adequately maintained, Brighton & Hove City Council also need to win the argument that an additional £8m of public money should be devoted to the scheme in the first place. There’s a very real risk that by deliberately making driving into Brighton more problematic without providing a viable alternative, there’ll be less visitors to the centre and also less locals from outlying suburbs and beyond too – 36% of out of town visitors arrive in Brighton in a private vehicle - spending around £300m (out of a total of £837m) per annum. Over 21,000 local jobs are supported by the tourist economy. Assuming a modest 5% drop in visitor numbers as an unintended consequence of reducing vehicle numbers - that would result in a £15m annual hit to the economy with job losses inevitable. This statistic doesn't even factor the likely transfer of jobs to neighbouring towns in Sussex as local residents in outlying districts of Brighton choose to drive and shop in Crawley, Eastbourne or Worthing as opposed to our own City Centre. I and the Valley Gardens Forum feel strongly that this plan isn’t the right one and if any of you share these concerns then we invite you to contact Daniel Nathan - info@valleygardensforum.org.uk if you want to join or know more. STRIP ADVISOR THE LAST CHANCE TO SEE THEM DANCE, VICKY EDWARDS GETS THE NAKED TRUTH FROM THE CAST OF THE FULL MONTY AS THEY EMBARK UPON THE FINAL TOUR OF THE SHOW…

I

t may be the last ever tour of this particular production, but it is the story that keeps on giving. Originally an award-winning movie, as a stage play The Full Monty has won both awards and hearts. In fact, such is the show’s popularity that as fast as one tour gets underway, producers David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers are compelled to map out the next. Few shows can sustain that level of repetition. But then The Full Monty isn’t an ordinary show. “It is special,” insists Gary Lucy (famous for playing Luke Morgan in Hollyoaks as well as for roles in EastEnders, The Bill, Footballers’ Wives and as a Dancing on Ice winner) who plays Gaz. Having starred in almost every ‘Monty’ tour to date, he knows just how readily people fall for this funny, poignant and bittersweet story. “People really love it. From proper theatregoers in Cambridge to Blackpool hen parties, everyone has an absolute ball. It is a gift of a role for me.” Louis Emerick, recently on our screens in Coronation Street, concurs. “This is the third tour for me and it really is a special show. It is a great story that still resonates now. They are also a lovely company to work and travel with.” Telling the story of six out of work steelworkers from Sheffield who put on a strip show to raise much-needed cash, the film went on to become one of the most successful British movies of all time. Writer of both the screenplay and the stage script, Simon Beaufoy is also the talent behind The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Slumdog Millionaire. Joe Gill (familiar to Emmerdale viewers as Finn Barton) believes the play’s credibility is key to its success.

“It is my first time on the show [he plays Lomper] but everyone knows how iconic it is and what a culture it has, so they come knowing that they will enjoy it.” Another ‘Monty’ virgin, James Redmond has done lengthy stints in Hollyoaks and Casualty but has never toured in a stage play before. However, that doesn’t stop him recognising the show’s broad appeal. “We can all relate to it and it is very moving. The poverty these guys lived in; Maggie Thatcher encouraged them to buy their council houses and then closed the steelworks so they were desperate. It’s a heart-warming story that still feels relevant today. Because half of us voted remain and half voted leave none of us know what the future holds.” Liz Carney who plays Jean is keen to chip in. “It appeals to men and women of all ages and from all classes. The girls in the play tell their own story, so audiences connect with them too.” Playing Mandy, Amy Thompson voices her agreement, adding: “And the thing that I find really special is that it gets people coming to the theatre who haven’t been before. “ Well known for roles including Rhys in Torchwood and Pete in Hollyoaks, Kai Owen returns to the role of Dave and admits that he loves the audience reaction. “They may start shouting at the start, but this isn’t Dream Boys or The Chippendales and as soon as they realise that it is a story they settle down. It is so well written that they get immersed and carried along until the end. Then everyone goes crazy!”

“ I love Brighton! ” “ The audiences are wild and we love them ”

“ Thatcher encouraged them to buy their council houses and then closed the steelworks so they were desperate. It’s a heart-warming story that still feels relevant today ” declares James, while Andrew admits that he hates the rigmarole of searching for digs. Joe, nodding his head, chimes in: “It’s my first tour and finding accommodation is more daunting than getting my kit off!” “I’m not a veteran tourer like Andrew, and it is difficult in the sense that I have three young children and I do like my own bed. That said, it’s great to absorb different towns and cities,” says Louis, explaining that he and Andrew generally share digs, trying to book places that will give them a daily walk into the theatre. With most venues being return visits there are some that the cast are especially looking forward to revisiting. No pressure, gentle folk of Brighton, but you’ve set the bar high. “I love Brighton!” squeals Liz, a huge fan of the East Sussex seaside resort. “The audiences are wild and we love them,” adds Gary.” The youngest member of company, sixteen-year-old Fraser Kelly is an old hand, having already been in the production previously. Telling me that they have been blessed with some excellent children playing the role of Nathan, the returning cast are unanimous that Fraser has something special. He in turn can’t wait to embark on his first tour without needing to be formally chaperoned. Over the chorus of fond banter and mickey taking, he says: “I can’t wait to start. It is a privilege working with such great people and great actors.” Ah, but are they great role models? “No! He’s our role model” says Kai, as they all collapse into fits of giggles. The last word goes to Gary: “There is no better show on the road. Come along and I’ll prove it to you.” That sounds like a challenge, Mr Lucy. And one that I am delighted to accept. ©Vicky Edwards 21 - 26 January, Theatre Royal Brighton, New Road atgtickets.com www.fullmontytheplay.com Facebook: The Full Monty UK Twitter : FullMontyPlay / #fullmonty

A play that covers a huge range of modern issues – as well as unemployment themes include financial insecurity, mental health, divorce, sexuality and body image – the mix of comedy, pathos, warmth and sadness is perfectly balanced. And then there are the bums and willies. There’s no way to pussy foot around the subject of the boys getting naked, so I ask outright: Is it absolutely terrifying? “I’m sure we’ll break Joe and James in gently,” says Louis with a naughty grin, recounting the first day in 2014 when he first had the ‘undress’ rehearsal. “We had only been rehearsing for three days and we hardly knew each other. But we did it, although we all looked each other firmly in the eye! From then on it was pretty easy. It’s much more of a man’s story in many ways and it is great when you see blokes in the audience.” “It is done really well on stage, although you do have to trust the lighting technicians, and some venues do have slow-closing curtains,” chuckles Andrew, best known for playing Tony in TV’s Dinnerladies. Talking of different venues, the tour schedule is so full that it gives me motion sickness just reading it. “I’ve been on stand-up circuit for nine years and I do like to explore and learn about where I am. I am looking forward to it,” LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

latest bill – ungagged! PRIDE VILLAGE PARTY

LET IT BE et’s move the England football games from Wembley, let’s move plants from Kew Gardens, let’s move opera from Covent Garden, let’s move the sea from the seafront! All mad ideas and heh I’ve got one more let’s move the Pride Village Party away from the Pride Village. Pride is St James Street and St James Street is proud to be Pride and the home from day one of LGBT rights in Brighton and Hove. Are we really saying the seafront is the home of Pride Village Party! Of course not. Everyone knows the long time rightful home of Pride is St James Street. That’s where the history is, that’s where the memories are and it must not move. So why are the council even thinking of moving it to the seafront? Why else would they be having a consultation now? When is the consultation on moving The Dome to the seafront? It seems to me just another attack on East Brighton. The Village Party has always been the best party in town and should remain so. Lloyd Russell-Moyle our MP said at the Pride consultation meeting I attended that the businesses in the Village need Pride (and with the Marlborough nearby it’s the LGBT+ centre of Brighton 51 weeks a year ) so in the LUCRATIVE 52nd week let’s take the party and all the money elsewhere. What a cheek! Are councillors that heartless, that stupid! I don’t think so! Lloyd also said as a resident that he loved The Village Party –as do I. He talks a lot of sense that MP!! So please readers… tell the Council what you think and let’s keep The FA Cup Final at Wembley and Pride in the Village In St James Street where it’s always been. Extend it to cover the Marlborough too, that makes sense! (see story below!) Nothing else does! As I say Live And Let Live and my friend Macca says Let It Be!

L

Let’s move England football from Wembley, plants from Kew, opera from Covent Garden, the sea from the seafront! Mad ideas & heh I’ve got one more let’s move the Pride Village Party from the Pride Village Kay’s idea) or my suggestion… Live And Let Live! I did suggest to various councillors that some of the Valley Gardens money should be spent east of Brighton Palace Pier on St James Street and not all on making a great Royal Pavilion garden space. Otherwise we might just think Harry and Meghan have actually moved in! As it happens I think they are cool couple (if they don’t shoot grouse with Piers “eat a vegan “ Morgan) and would big up St James Street. I think if Kemp Town is to become the most polluted side we deserve some compensation and I understand Brighton Council are looking at signage for St James and Kemptown and why not Whitehawk and the famous Hawks too! I hope they look at access to St James Street too because the present access plan is a definite no-no! Dangerous!!! So here’s my top 10 list – think continental, I like Europeans!

COMPROMISE NEEDED… TOO DIFFICULT FOR POLITICIANS In a few weeks we will know how Brighton and Hove City Council see the future of The Old Steine and the roundabout by Brighton Palace Pier as Valley Gardens 3 comes to a TV station near you! Almost as riveting as The West Wing (which is what the council are accused of!) The plans put forward by the council have united pretty well everyone east of Brighton Palace Pier against the idea which essentially leaves the Royal Pavilion side with a lovely paved outdoor garden area but moves all traffic to the east side with consequent increase in pollution for east Old Steine and St James Street. The campaigners against say they will go for Judicial Review if there is no compromise which means the council may not get the money to do the work at all. Certainly they will alert the funders who are the LEP. One campaigner accused the Council of trying to put a motorway on the east side with all the associated pollution giving real health risks to those on the east side. I guess when you have language schools, lawyers, major tourism businesses lining up with the capital of the counterculture The Marlborough against the council’s plans, any sensible council officers would rethink. Let’s hope they do. If not let’s hope that pragmatic councillors like Gill Mitchell and Nancy Platts, Robert Nemeth and Tom Druitt meet the opposition to the officers’ scheme and a happy compromise is reached. They’re not all like Rees Mogg you know!

1 Archways at the bottom of St James St and bottom of Manchester Street saying The Village or St James 2 Signs everywhere for St James and Kemptown Village and Whitehawk FC 3 Overhead bridge from Brighton Palace Pier to bottom of Manchester Street so accessing Village... 4 Overhead bridge from Old Steine to St James Street... otherwise no one will ever access St James Street safely (maybe a subway) 5 Make St James Street as New Road dual use for pedestrians and traffic. I’d really like it totally pedestrianised! 6 Give us a road like the one outside Jubilee Gardens. 7 Finally spend some time in our streets and PLANNERS put some work into our area. It’s already busier than North Laine. But not a word in city plan. Are we Soweto??? 8 The whole east of the city from Moulsecoomb to Whitehawk via Hanover, St James, Kemptown , Bristol Estate needs serious attention. Please! 9 Put us in city guides. Visit Brighton mag at Station we are invisible! 10 Be proud of WHERE PRIDE STARTED!!! Bill Smith aka Latest Bill

THE REBIRTH OF ST JAMES STREET I’ve at last made real progress on getting winter lights up in St James Street. We got 4 major lights on buildings up before Christmas and the council will enable the avenue of winter white tree lights to go up in next week or so. It’s the first step and it’s thanks to the Pride Social Impact Fund (funded by St James St businesses amongst others) Later in the year we will have lights and street decoration as in Western Road so please forward me your ideas. We thought maybe we could have LGBT lyrics spanning the roads (Andrew LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

hotlist MEAT & DAIRY FREE o it’s Veganuary, a feast of people people working very hard to persuade me to leave behind my omniverous ways. I respect that everyone has the right to choose, I really do, and I love vegetable based cusine too. But I’m not ready to fall into a meat and dairy free lifestyle just yet. That said I am always happy to eat vegan food so the invitation to try the new vegan offering at Bill’s was very welcome. I love the whole idea of Bill’s, okay, I think it was at its best when small and independent, but last night I was delighted to see the eponymous Bill was in attendance and we had a nice chat about when I first met him at The John Harvey in Lewes and a punnet of levellers, the goosberries not the band. The menu last night was certainly a vegan feast with some tasty canapes, great hummus and olives and tasty roast cauliflower amongst them. of ending up in care with all my meals run through a blender. I did however like the gin cocktail, yes I’m not doing dry January either! I chose to start with the vegan duck salad. Now I’ve had vegan duck before and as meat substitutes go it is the best, it has the right texture and takes on seasoning well. This was clearly a hoisin based delight with crunchy vegetables, masses of coriander and finely sliced red chilli. It really hit the spot and was also a good size, neither too big nor too small. Strangely for me I was drawn to the burger for my main course. This I read was made of mushrooms and beetroot. Fascinated I ploughed in and I have to declare that it was very nice – mainly because it had real texture, dare I say it? Meaty! It was tasty too and the addition of fried aubergine, my favourite vegetable (or is it a fruit?) added a creaminess that more than made up for the lack of mayo. The bun was decent, not too heavy and the fries were not only good and crisp but piping hot. How I

BACKPACKER’S GUIDE: ULTIMATE WEEKEND TV MAKER STEVE HOPPER’S REMARKABLE STORY

R

egular viewers to Latest TV will be familiar with Steve Hopper, who joined the channel back in June 2018 with his groundbreaking World Cup show, ‘World Cup Latest’. He’s since become a regular face on our screens. What viewers may not know about Steve, is that for many years, he’s suffered from anxiety and panic attacks. These crippling issues have prevented him from living a ‘normal’ life. ‘Inappropriate Anxiety and Panic Attacks can be disabling’ says Steve. ‘I know they have been during mine for sure. Trying to build my career as a presenter has been an uphill struggle but even the everyday things were obstacles. Like going food shopping. About five years ago, I came to a crossroads in my life and decided to face my problems head on’ It was here that ‘Backpackers Guide: Ultimate Weekend’ was born. In a lighthearted factual comedy, Steve with the help of his close friend, Actor, Grant Huggair (He Who Dares, Essex Vendetta) a backpacking tour was planned. A boys weekend through some of the most popular European getaway countries seemed just the ticket. However, Steve’s issues weren’t the only things plaguing the trip. Grant had his own battles to contend with. Food Intolerance. ‘Everyone know’s how important food is whilst you’re travelling abroad, whether on a holiday or a weekend trip’ says Grant. ‘For the average tourist it can be tricky to find the cuisine you want to eat and where to get it. For someone like me who’s wheat and dairy intolerant, it’s a minefield. One wrong ingredient and I’m gasping for air’. During six days of intense travel around the four countries of France, Holland, Luxembourg and Belgium, Steve and Grant embark on what for many others is a picnic in Preston Park. ‘Neither myself or Grant had ever done backpacking before. We had no clue what it was about and I’d only ever choose swanky, 5 star hotels if I went away anywhere. I’d barely been outside my front door in truth!’ Viewers can expect the unexpected and find the already discovered during the programme! However, there are a couple of detours throughout the mini-series. Steve’s moaning will give Victor Meldrew a run for his money and Grant’s juvenile behaviour (despite approaching 50) will have everybody believing these two are the original odd couple. Backpackers Guide: Ultimate Weekend airs on Friday 18th January on Latest TV at 10pm, with the 2nd episode in the special showing at 10pm on Friday 25th January
