latest bill – ungagged! ROBERT BURNS

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

THE FIRST RAPPER t's Burns night this week. (Friday 25 January). But for those who don't know Burns here's a quick summary: he was the greatest!!! Robert Burns was a Scottish rapper, poet and song-writer of the eighteenth century, now loved across the world by millions. He invented so many famous words and sayings: 'whatever' and 'so what?' are two of the ones he didn't invent. But those he did invent include 'faint heart never won fair lady'; 'always try for intimacy at the first possible opportunity'; 'the best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft aglay (go often astray)'; 'man's inhumanity to man makes countless millions mourn' and of course he wrote that song you can never remember the words of on New Year's Eve, 'Should auld acquaintance be forgot (Auld Lang Syne)'. Burns was the king of the one-liners. He was a head taller than any other man. He was the perfect bit of rough. He was the poet of the people, a revolutionary upstart in Edinburgh. The Scottish establishment have always tried to tone down his image – nice man in kilt on biscuit tin, they make him seem like Daniel O'Donnell. But he was the Tom Paine of Scotland. He also wrote one of the great protest songs of all time, 'The Slave's Lament'. I recommend the version by Jean Redpath. Bill Smith aka Latest Bill It was in sweet Senegal That my foes did me enthral For the lands of Virginia, -ginia, O! Torn from that lovely shore, And must never see it more, And alas! I am weary, weary, O!

I

THE FIRST n 27th January we will be remembering the millions of people killed in the Holocaust. For me however even using the word millions is terrible. Because they were individuals - all with names, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. Arnold Daghani was a survivor of the camps. A great painter and chronicler of one of the lesser known camps. Everyone died in the camp he was in except him and his wife Nanino and they escaped because he was a painter and by chance they managed to get out of the camp for a few days for Arnold to paint elsewhere for the camp boss and in those couple of days they escaped.

O

“ Even using the word millions is terrible. Because they were individuals - all with names, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. ” Eventually and amazingly they came to live in Brighton at 1 Palmeira Square where he covered every wall of their house in paintings. He also put all his camp paintings and drawings which he had managed to escape with into a book collection. Equally amazingly most of his work is at The Centre For German-Jewish Studies At The University Of Sussex. His key work is entitled What A Nice World. Rollcall: Arnold Daghani His work is becoming more and more well known and books are coming out about this wonderful chronicler and painter. On Wednesday 6 February the Centre For German-Jewish Studies has an afternoon event which is entitled Torn From Home as Arnold Daghani was. I hope you go.

All on that charming coast Is no bitter snow and frost, Like the lands of Virginia, -ginia, O! There streams for ever flow, And the flowers for ever blow, And alas! I am weary, weary, O! The burden I must bear, While the cruel scourge I fear, In the lands of Virginia, -ginia, O! And I think on friends most dear With the bitter, bitter tear, And alas! I am weary, weary, O! If you want to know more about Burns I recommend Catherine Carswell's biography.

he UK is seeing more and more closures of pubs with as many as 18 a week biting the dust across the country. Here in Brighton we have seen massive changes in the pub scene with places being taken over by community groups, chains changing not only the names but the nature of how a pub functions and some simply disappearing and being converted to housing. handcart and Angela, a natural pessimist, is fed up of commentating on it all as it happens. But can a renowned pessimist like Angela really find it in herself to accentuate the positive, look on the bright side and pop on her rose-tinted specs to make the bad stuff go away? Just for a little bit? Like maybe for an hour? Or is she better off confronting the horrible stuff and laughing in its ugly face? This is stand-up and stories from a woman who is just, like the rest of us, trying to live her life… and wouldn’t mind a taste of that ignorant bliss she’s heard so much about!

“ If you enjoy relatable comedy sprinkled with a dusting of political satire, Rose Tinted is the show for you ”

TV & EDINBURGH STAR ANGELA BARNES IS HEADING TO KOMEDIA WITH HER NEW SHOW f you’ve seen her on TV or caught her live you will know that her comedy is fearless. In truth fearless is probably not a strong enough term to describe her acid wit, her razor sharp observational comedy and her ability to go that extra step into the danger zone whilst still appearing to be utterly charming – well sort of charming. You’d love her as a friend but perhaps not a daughter in law or girlfriend. Not that she is merely critical of others, far from it, she’s as hard on herself as she is on the rest of the world that’s for sure. Angela Barnes sold out show after show at last year’s Edinburgh Festival, and picked up some well-earned critical acclaim along the way. Now she brings that show, Rose Tinted, on a tour of the UK in 2019. So you may have seen or heard Angela on any number of topical comedy TV and radio shows, and do you know what? She is just about fed up of the news! She’s anxious, she’s depressed and she’s fatigued. Bored of Brexit, tired of Trump and knackered by North Korea. The world is going to hell in a

In 2011, she won the BBC New Comedy Award and became a finalist at the 2011 Latitude Festival New Act of the Year competition. Since then Angela has become a regular on BBC’s The News Quiz, Newsjack and Mock The Week. She has also appeared on Live At The Apollo (BBC2), The Now Show (BBC Radio 4), Stand Up For The Week (Channel 4 / Open Mic) and Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC3). Besides Rose Tinted’s success at the Fringe in 2018, Angela was also awarded the Edinburgh Panel Prize as part of the Home Safe Collective – a project to help vulnerable comedians get home safely after shows, in the wake of the tragic death of Australian stand-up Eurydice Dixon. 6 February, Komedia, komedia.co.uk

QUEERSAY & AK SOUFFLÉ LATEST’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR ANDREW KAY TALKS ABOUT HIS LGBT & FOOD SHOWS

I

n my final school report the headmaster wrote that no doubt I would end up working as an artist of some kind or a writer. He got both predictions absolutely spot on but what he didn’t foresee was that I would end up on the telly! But back in the early seventies what council house kid did think that they would end up on the telivision? Not me that’s for sure. I joined this gaggle of creative friends some 26 years ago, firstly writing a restaurant column – which I still do, then as art director. These days I still write and design but for the most time I make TV shows. My first series was International Chef Exchange, a wonderful series that I subtitled The Joy Of Chefs, yes I’m never far from a pun or a double entendre. It went on to be seen worldwide on Amazon Prime and I still get letters from all over from viewers. I followed that with Cook It! a series that aimed to get people back in the kitchen and away from ready meals. That was screened UK wide and still is. I’m please to say that I am currently working on Cook It 2, so watch this space. When Bill Smith asked me to help create Latest’s LGBT+ TV channel I was more than excited, it tapped into my life in a poignant way and gave me the opportunity to air not only my views but those of a huge number of amazing guests. Queersay happens twice a week and thanks to my wonderful regular guests, James Ledward, Rev Michael Hydes, Geoffrey Bowden, Ivor Caplin, Alison Child and Alan Flack, we rake through the way global media covers LGBT+ news and issues. It’s become a popular show on Latest TV and I get as many compliments from the straight community as the gay one which makes it so worthwhile. There are 170 episodes too which you can catch up with online. AK Soufflé is my weekly talk-show. It’s often fun, sometimes angry and frequently moving. Across around 70 episodes my guests have talked about art, love sex, death, religion, booze, boys and… well I’ll let you watch and see! Oh and I read the news too, which is probably as far away from my headmaster’s vision of what my future might hold as he could imagine. Of course I do it my way which is in turn the Latest TV way, by which I mean this is local TV for a local audience. AK Soufflé screens on Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 9pm, Queersay screens Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 9.30pm and both are repeated throughout the week. You can currently see repeats of Cook It! & International Chef Exchange throughout the week
