KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY JACK SMITH HAS LAUNCHED A NEW AND MODERN ESTATE AGENCY IN PORTLAND ROAD, HOVE, CARRYING ON A FINE TRADITION OF QUALITY CUSTOMER CARE.

O

streamlined business where the director is involved hands on in ensuring clients are kept informed along every step of their property journey. “With a lot of corporates, the director is not there! I will come to value your property and find out what you need.” The business currently specialises in lettings management, but has branched out into sales and Jack is offering an attractive 0.5% sales fee on all properties. Jack’s reach is across Brighton, Hove, Worthing and along the South Coast. On the lettings side, Jack Smith guarantees to beat any other agency on both service and letting fee. I ask is this a brave time to start an estate agency based on the high street? In the age of internet agencies, and mid Brexit! Jack is reassuring on this point. “There are many serious buyers out there, and the need and want for a property is continual. I follow the London market a lot, and Brighton is doing well, in that the price of property is remaining stable, and vendors are achieving fair and reasonable prices for their homes. People have no need to be fearful of either buying or selling at this time, and there are some great homes on the market throughout this area”. Perhaps because of both Jack’s experience with customers and his

n first meeting Jack Smith, what’s striking about the 23 year old founder of Jack Smith Estate Agents, is a friendly, easy-going charm and courtesy; a young energetic approach, plus a wealth of experience gained from both a strong family background of estate agency and from his own career, starting in the business at the age of 17. Jack started in estate agency working for a number of independent agents in Brighton and Hove. He worked his way up to fully understanding the management of lettings, and the service required for advising buyers and sellers on making the best moves. The newly established office in the heart of Portland Road, Hove, offers sales, lettings and management of properties, and this includes both residential and commercial properties. Jack manages a large portfolio of properties, over which he places a lot of care and attention. This old school approach of customer service is combined with a modern, technological approach of using social media, and digital communications to professionally market a home and to keep in swift touch with vendors and buyers. “What you see is what you get!” says Jack in his honest and friendly way, and the beauty of this new business is that you would deal with Jack directly! This personal approach is possible, because it is a nimble,

FROM GRANDFATHERS, TO MOTHER & FATHER, TO SON!

J

ack’s family owned the Raymond Beaumont estate agency office in Fiveways, as well as Deacon and Co in Portslade. John Andrew, Jack’s grandfather, joined Raymond Beaumont, Estate Agents, at their East Street office in Brighton as an office boy at the age of 18 years old in 1956. He later became a partner of this firm and then owner of the Fiveway’s Office where Jack’s uncles, Mark and David Andrew, and Jack’s grandmother, Sheila, and Jack’s mother, Susan all had a part to play in the running of the family business. John was Honorary Secretary of the Brighton & Hove Estate Agents Association, a post that he held for many years and he became the President of this Association in 1992. Jack’s grandfather Ken, has also been a major influence. After completing his national service, Ken joined Winchester and Paine in 1954 as an office boy. He then moved on to work as a sales negotiator at Graves Son & Pilcher, Raymond Beaumont and Hayler and Sawyer. In 1976 Jack’s grandfather purchased Deacon & Company (Station Road Portslade) where he worked until 2006 when he retired. He was accompanied in the running of this business by Jack’s father Mark. Jack himself has been with Hannah Moorhead for two and a half years and became engaged last year. Hannah has been a key part in helping Jack to set up the business and they will be married next May. Will there be more branches of this estate agency family tree? “It would be lovely to pass on the tradition and keep the name going!”

“ For renters, I would reassure them that there are quality landlords in our city. ” ease with technology, he explains that his approach is very relaxed. “I want people to feel at home when I come around to do a free valuation. The initial chat is about finding out what a client needs and using my skills to deliver that”. “To new homeowners, I would say don’t be scared of the current market. There are always people out there looking to buy or sell. For renters, I would similarly reassure them that there are quality landlords in our city. We vet our landlords carefully and I will inspect any property we take on to ensure it meets our high standards. One standard I also personally apply is “Would I live here?” As a member of NALS (National Approved Lettings Scheme), Jack Smith takes high standards as a matter of course. So with estate agency literally in his genes, and his heart and head intent on providing a quality service, does Jack Smith enjoy pursuits outside of property? “I used to play a lot of golf. My company is sponsoring the West Hove Pro-Am being held on Wednesday, 21 August 2019.” Jack Smith also supports local charities such as Parkinson’s UK, St Barnabus and Chestnut Tree House. So if, for the New Year, you are looking to buy or sell in the Brighton & Hove area and beyond, then look no further than Jack Smith Estate Agents, a new agent with a solid heritage! “Delicious & brilliant value” sounds like carte blanche but Mr G is a vegetarian and I wanted to go somewhere that would make a big change for him. I gave it some thought before remembering that he liked Indian food and that it was always a good option for a vegetarian. I then remembered that my vegetarian friend Ms G de V had raved about a small restaurnat in Trafalgar Street called Manju’s. I got on the phone that very minute because it’s small and popular and fortunately I was able to bag the last table at 6pm for the Friday. I arrived a little early and was able to chat to the two brothers who run front of house and asked about their background, I already

We started with a real favourite of mine, bhel, puffed rice, sev, puri, potato, chickpea, chutneys – I love this spiky and sharp mix of crisp and soft, sweet and sour and so did Mr G, it was perfect for two and a great start to our meal. Mr G wanted to try their mini masala dosa, a fermented rice flour pancake with potato and onion curry, dhal, chutneys. I love this dish but seldom order it as it can be huge. This version was a perfect size for one or for two sharing and we both revelled in it, again spice

latest bill – ungagged! Welcome to Brighton where at the end of the rainbow the streets are paved with gold – or are they? For too many the reality falls far short

HOMELESS BY THE SEA

W

hat do you think of civilisation in the UK? I think it would be a very good idea! And that is surely proved as the rich pontificate on TV while the poor freeze and die in our streets! It shocks me that politicians are talking about whether we should make trade deals with Singapore or Spain, when there’s thousands of people sleeping in the streets ( and many dying prematurely ) I guess civilisation in the UK would be a good idea! C4 and BBC and most major channels are the rich discussing the poor. When did you see an unemployed person presenting a show? No, on Newsnight it’s Kirsty Wark or Evan Davis telling us of the poor unemployed’s plight. The poor can’t be allowed to have their own voice! When the posh TV presenters talk of the North on mainstream TV they mean Zone 4 not Middlesborough. And the same is true of rough sleepers and the homeless. Have you ever seen programmes on major channels where the homeless are the show runners? No, of course not. I hate those words of course!!! Well that changes next week as Latest TV shows Homeless By The Sea every night at 7pm. The director Eva Wilshere allows Brighton’s rough sleepers to tell us their stories and we get to see them as individuals and blimey most of them can talk as well as Kirsty or Evan. ( Sorry Kirsty/ Evan you’re just my examples as ALL major London based presenters are Oxbridge types! ) Whatever happened to the working class!! I was a prefab council house kid who was clever and went to Oxford. Thanks to my Scottish parents who wanted me to do well. My posh friends used to say “ William, you must come over and see my estate” which was probably half of Wiltshire. I used to respond, “ Oh Roger, come and see my estate!” By the way I preferred my council estate, a lotta life! Be nice if we could build a few more!!! Anyway, I had nothing much to do with the Homeless film ( must have been the executive producer ha! ) which is why I can say it’s a great film. And when we’ve shown it before on Latest TV it’s got some of the biggest audiences we’ve ever had on the channel. Tens of thousands have seen it so don’t miss this crucial film. As we are showing Homeless By The Sea we are also highlighting the issue in many of our other programmes. So check Latest News every night and The Vote and especially the interviews on The People’s Republic Of Brighton and Hove.

“Have you ever seen programmes on major channels where the homeless are the show runners? ”

You can watch our film Homeless By The Sea on Latest TV, 7pm every night from Monday 4 February
