Running Away With The Hairdresser Kevin Sinnott
THE POWER OF LOVE
Under the sheets Where we wailed with grief for a long while Oh no we wailed, oh no we wailed For a good long while woe is me Woe Woe is me After ten hours Opened our eyes We caught a smile Such a tiny smile Opened our eyes And so we laughed Under the sheets Where we screamed with joy and laughter for a long while Oh yes we laughed, oh yes we smiled For a good long while Joy is me Joy Joy is me
So here's what can happen in any library, especially on Valentine's Day
Ten years have passed I still hide Under the sheets Where we laugh and cry And we feel fine
I
You found me Grief then joy
t only took ten seconds. I was in the University library researching the original jazz songs of Dorothy Fields. I loved to put those great old jazz tunes in my set. Then I found the rarely sung lyric to On The Sunny Side Of The Street and I was thrilled at my find. Walked with no-one and talked with no-one, And I had nothing but shadows. Then one morning you passed And I brightened at last. Now I greet the day, and complete the day, With the sun in my heart. All my worry blew away When you taught me how to say: Grab your coat and get your hat, leave your worry at the doorstep Just direct your feet to the sunny side of the street Can't you hear that pitter pat and that happy tune is your step Life can be so sweet On the sunny side of the street And then I noticed Emily. She was wearing a short sleeved shirt. Her face and her arms Mediterranean, olive and tanned. She had big big eyes and was on the verge of crying. She looked suspicious of everyone. I was hypnotised. To my left people were merrily chatting. They shouldn't have
been but they were careless and happy. Suddenly Emily leant forward and her mouth breathed fire. There was an ear- piercing yell as loud as I've ever heard

“ You could now hear a pin drop. It had taken ten seconds to fall utterly in love. ” LOVE IN A COLD WORLD It was Holocaust Memorial Day last week and it's Valentine's Day this week. The two don't go together except that even in hell on earth love will triumph. It's what most sensible peple want Tadeusz Borowski wrote one of the greatest love poems of all time, a song of longing for the girlfriend that he spent many hours with, on her bunk in Birkenau – Auschwitz - after getting a job as a collector of infant corpses in the women's prison. Love in a cold world.
SCHHH! THIS IS A LIBRARY!...she screamed And I was in love. With her gentleness and her strength and her tenderness and her passion and her madness. You could now hear a pin drop. It had taken ten seconds to fall utterly in love. I got up and got her a coffee and persuaded her to go home. Let Emily sing you the story of the next 10 years. You found me Half asleep You heard me Crying silently In a heap
The Sun of Auschwitz You remember the sun of Auschwitz and the green of the distant meadows, lightly lifted to the clouds by birds, no longer green in the clouds, but seagreen white.
I wanted him I ached for him He’d rushed away You felt my pain You felt the same You crouched by me

Together we stood looking into the distance and felt the far away green of the meadows and the clouds' seagreen white within us, as if the colour of the distant meadows were our blood or the pulse beating within us, as if the world existed only through us and nothing changed as long as we were there. I remember your smile as elusive as a shade of the colour of the wind, a leaf trembling on the edge of sun and shadow, fleeting yet always there. So you are for me today, in the seagreen sky, the greenery and the leaf-rustling wind. I feel you in every shadow, every movement, and you put the world around me like your arms. I feel the world as your body, you look into my eyes and call me with the whole world. Tadeusz Borowski You would never know from reading this poem that they were in an extermination camp. You could read it as escapism, but it's not, because the subject of this poem is true love and nothing else impinged on that feeling. TO LOVE You hear it in the rivers You see it in the stars It teaches non-believers To walk upon its shores You feel it in the breezes It reminds you of your youth You smell it in the bonfires It touches you as truth Understand the tyranny Revel in its dreams Will weigh you down in misery And light you in its beams You sense it slowly moving Towards you in the crowds It is captured by the sunlight When the wind parts the clouds To love is not illusion s real as real as real Invisible as iron Silent as steel Latest Bill/Eminemmylou

andrew kay dines out amazing, a slab of tender and tasty beef in a rich sauce with both soft and crispy noodles, it was quite brilliant and summed up what I meant about earthy flavours. We ate a lot and when offered the dessert menu felt that it might be a dish too far, but on reading realised that it had to be done. The coconut ice-cream sandwich was fab, Ms M declared it a posh arctic roll. The pandam trifle was topped with Italian meringue rather than LUCKY KHAO ow lucky am I to get to eat so much and so often. This week it’s at Lucky Khao which has just opened up in Red Roaster and serves northern Thai food. I invited my old friend and colleague Ms M to join me, we both have food issues in that we simply love it, cooking it, eating it and talking it! Northern Thai differs from the Thai we might know, I find the

this was something else, spicy, sweet and all in a sweet roll with lots of delicious topping both creamy and crunchy. I will be having that again for sure. I am obsessed with aubergine and the aubergine dish we choose was simply divine, I love that soft creamy flesh and that it carries flavours, there was lots of it too, enough to not fret about taking too much when sharing. “Steamed to a pearly perfection” flavours are earthier, deeper and by being less familiar rather exciting. The format is relaxed and modern, dishes are listed by size rather than by course and geared towards sharing. I like that, and I hasten to add that there is little that I would describe as small as in small plate, this is robust stuff and all the better for it. We started with a cocktail, well it was Friday so what the hey! Mine an interesting take on a negroni but with bourbon, almost a Manhattan but not. Ms M had a take on a mojito, which was fragrant with cucumber. We pooled our thoughts and ordered, first out the Thai hot dog. Now I’m no lover of hot dogs but
tucked into a platter of herbs and chillies and garlic with fabulous sauces of herbs and of tamarind. I had been given the nod that the sea bass was unmissable. That nod was right and it was perfect for sharing. It was flash fried in a crisp coating of salt and spice so that the skin crackled but the flesh was steamed to a pearly perfection. The bed of vegetables beneath was a dish in it own right too. We ordered belly pork and could not believe how amazingly tender it was or how judiciously spiced. Ms M is no lover of fiery heat but she embraced all of this with relish. Our final savoury dish was a smoked brisket curry in the Chang Mai style which was

ORLANDO
Orlando, man, woman, creature of mystery – what is the truth? Is there a truth? Whatever the answer this fascinating literary figure is brought to life by Dyad
O
rlando: Who is she? Who is he? Who are we? This iconic literary figure is never far from public gaze. A recent exhibition at Charleston Farmhouse offered a major insight and celebration of Virginia Woolf’s creation to much acclaim. Now there is a new dramatisation. Written and directed by Elton Townend Jones and performed by Rebecca Vaughan from Dyad Productions, the award-winning creators of Jane Eyre: An Autobiography, Dalloway, The Unremarkable Death of Marilyn Monroe, Female Gothic, I, Elizabeth, Christmas Gothic, The Time Machine and Austen’s Women. Writer/Director Elton Townend Jones and performer Rebecca Vaughan present the award-winning comedic tale of an immortal poet, whose gender cannot be pinned down, whose spirit cannot be caged, and whose irreverent, romantic adventures across British history, from the 1500s to 2019, provide a magic-realist exploration of human identity; personal, sexual and national. Drawing on a decade’s worth of successful theatre-making, this life-affirming, feminist voyage into the soul of what it means to find one’s place in the world whilst remaining true to oneself is the culmination of everything Dyad Productions has so far created, toured and presented since 2009. Based on the satirical 1928 novel by Virginia Woolf. Winner of the Three Weeks Editors’ Award, 2018. Dyad Productions creates, produces and tours classic theatre with an innovative and contemporary emphasis. This stage production based on the classic Modernist novel is Dyad’s tenth original production in as many years, and premiered at Assembly Edinburgh in August 2018 garnering numerous 5-star reviews and the Three Weeks Editors’ Award. Other works, Austen’s Women, I, Elizabeth, The Diaries of Adam and Eve, Female Gothic, The Unremarkable Death of Marilyn Monroe, Dalloway, Jane Eyre: An Autobiography and The Time Machine were all five-star successes between 2011-2017 and continue to tour across the UK and internationally. Friday 15 March, 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley Tickets priced £15.50 (Discounts: £13.50) are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 and www.hawth.co.uk.

OUR TOWN
LATEST’S ANGI MARIANI MAKES THE MOST OF THE STREETS WHERE SHE LIVES IN OUR POPULAR PANEL GAME WHERE LOCAL HISTORY LOVERS ARE TESTED ON THEIR BRIGHTON & HOVE KNOWLEDGE
A
ngi Mariani is a key player here at Latest functioning across so many platforms that it’s a wonder that she doesn’t implode. But she does not and along the way she has made some remarkable television for the channel that has not only been screened here in the city but across the UK. Her greatest hit to date has to be the award wining Digital Nation which she produced for the BBC as well as the local TV network. It feautured some of the best reporting from around the UK’s innovative new local channels, everything from hard news, through entertainment and the often quite frankly hilarious. It gave a unique insight into the UK as it sailed through the second decade of the twentieth century. It was a programme that gained not only national fans but national acclaim! Since then she has produced and directed an amazing film about Brighton’s much missed and iconic West Pier and is already in preproduction of a new series on the country’s best piers, starting of course with our very own Brighton Palace Pier – always working with our fantastic team of film makers. Her other films charted the buiding of Brighon’s monumental engineering feat, the British Airways i360 and she is currently working on a documentary about the buidling of a stunning new mosque in Cambridge. But it’s her passion for the city and its history that has led her to create and produce the panel quiz show Our Town, a half hour of local knowledge, little known facts and anecdotes about this historic city by the sea. The show is hosted by Andy Garth, a real Brightonian and a fount of local knowledge. Andy has accumulated a vast archive of local history in print and photography and from his years working in the property industry, he knows these streets better than the back of his hand. We asked Angi about the show: “What do you know about our town? Of course, Brighton & Hove was granted city status in 2001, but to the many residents who have grown up in this seaside mecca of fun, it will always be known as Our Town. “If you look at the success of Brighton Past and Brighton People facebook pages (managed by Carol Homewood and Jax Atkins respectively), you will see that tens of thousands of residents each day enjoy asking each other about the town of their childhoods! From old pubs, to old cinemas, to old movies, and old ephemera, no stone is left unturned in the public's appetite to really know Brighton & Hove. “So to this end, we have teamed up with the following characters to bring you Our Town, a weekly local history quiz about everything historical in our great patch. Historical meaning anything between the bronze and ice ages, to last week, covering the Regency period, the 1970s and 80s, royalty, fisherfolk and everything and everyone in between. “Our host Andy Garth, owner of Brighton & Hove Stuff also rescued the Argus Archives - a great photographic archive of news and a massively
important resource for the city. Questions are by Bill Smith who founded the first listings magazine, The Punter and went on to establish Latest TV, and the show is produced by me because I’m very nosey and love to see behind the scenes in so many interesting places in town. Carol Homewood and Jax Atkins are our team captains, and they are joined each week by two fun characters in the city who have seen a thing or two.” If you would like to be a contestant on the show, then please email ourtown@thelatest.co.uk with any area of expertise. Anyone with a story is most welcome!
“ The show is produced by me because I’m very nosey and love to see behind the scenes in so many interesting places in town ” AND NOW A STARTER FOR 10!!!
