U
ntil the 31st of December last year I along with my business partner and our loyal team of bookers, managers, bar staff and engineers ran Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar. We shut on New Year’s Eve with the biggest party we’ve ever had. We didn’t shut because the business was failing or we couldn’t afford to keep going, we shut because relations with the landlord were no longer viable. Our lease was up and they didn’t want us there anymore. It was tough… all you’ve worked for over a seven and a half year period gone in an instant. Sticky Mike’s was a really important first step on the ladder for a lot of local bands. It was a really important place for people to hang out. It was a safe space where ideas were given the chance to grow. If we don’t maintain these fragile eco systems we’ll be in trouble. I’ve always said that running a music venue is a privilege as you are the gatekeeper for so much. You get to see creativity at its rawest. You see successes and failure happen and you see folk pick themselves up and develop new ideas and grow into something unstoppable. It’s exciting. A band playing a tiny venue or grass roots music venue as we are now called and nailing their performance is one of the things I’ve always loved about
also need to understand how important these spaces are for the people who frequent them. Going to see a band is good for you. It’s how lots of folk relax and let off steam. It’s where folk make friends for life, where they find their support systems. Where they have fun. You can go to a gig on your own and meet likeminded people. I just can’t stress how crucial it is that we protect these spaces for future generations.
“ Running a venue is a privilege – you are the gatekeeper for so much” seeing bands… I saw The Super Furry Animals do it a thousand years ago and more recently King Gizzard hit their stride with psychedelic greatness in Sticky Mike’s basement (30 minute last song). Oh go on then! I fell in love with Dream Wife at The Hope & Ruin (thankfully we still have this venue to keep us busy). I’m not religious but I prayed that no record company exec would try and erase the guts and anger from them. I wanted to be in their gang. My fake prayers were answered and the rest is history. That’s why we do this. What I don’t understand is why the above is still not considered to be culturally significant in the same was as say theatre, opera and art. What a lot of people probably don’t realise is how much funding is given to these activities. Many of the larger venues where this stuff happens receive huge grants and subsidy. Also the activities that take place in these spaces are funded to allow for ideas to take shape, develop and exist without the need to be profitable. Currently this is not the case with the majority of small venues. We are literally fuelled by the sale of alcohol and this needs to change. So we’re asking for a rethink about how funding is allocated and why. We LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

stage A NIGHT OF KNIGHT
Lark and Round The Horne and on Fridays Friday Night Is Music Night. FNIMN remains a firm favourite with huge audiences, it’s the idea soundtrack to a long car journey, the perfect accompaniment to a camping holiday and always a great opportunity to hear some of the very best musicians around. So it was with great excitiement that, after 63 years on this planet, I finalyl get the chance to attend a live recording of that favourite show. My fault of course, I’ve simply never taken the time to get along to a recording of this wonderful entertainment but not any more. This autumn, the show will be in Brighton at the Brighton Centre. The shows are often themed and not only is it exciting that it will be in town but on this occassion with a tribute to the great Stevie Wonder. Exciting yes, but even better when you read that the star of the evening will be Beverley Knight. Having performed a special concert recorded for BBC Radio 2’s ‘Friday Night Is Music Night’ series at The London Palladium at the end of last year, Knight is set to take the show across the UK with the Leo Green Orchestra to pay homage to one of the greatest songwriters of modern times. Multi award-winning Knight, who this year celebrates 25 years in music, is widely regarded as one of the greatest soul singers of her generation and one of few vocalists with the ability to do justice to the genius of Stevie Wonder’s rich and varied catalogue. She will recreate the memorable London Palladium concert, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 2 last week and is available to listen to here. Beverley Knight says: “The London Palladium show in November was such a wonderful, thrilling experience for me that I didn’t need to think twice when offered the opportunity to tour it across the UK later on this year. I look forward to once again teaming up with the Leo Green Orchestra to perform these beautiful arrangements of Stevie’s timeless, inimitable music”. iss Jason, one of the nation's best loved drag queens takes to the road in the Great British Gad About, the most outrageous road trip you'll ever go on. A glittering and entertaining game show hosted by the witty and talented Miss Jason, accompanied by her two team captains: Eurovision sensation, Nicki French and fellow drag artist Davina Sparkle, known and loved for her robust style of humour. The three of them bring a unique love/hate relationship which
“With Miss Jason's unique style and the Great British sense of humour, this show is a winner ” along the way. The panellists ask questions from the VTs and try to ascertain the whereabouts of the secret location. The live studio audience are shown a reveal in the beginning of the show to encourage audience participation. As if this is not enough, to top it off there's always a competition for the panel to take part in. Winner is decided by the applause of the studio audience. Miss Jason's side-kick, Elaine, adds her own special flair to the programme as our drinks’ waitress. This 83 year old woman dressed as a French maid adds to the mad and off the wall concept that Miss Jason's House Party is. This adult-orientated programme is not for the fainthearted. With a first series already filmed and broadcast we are delighted to announce that we are now in pre-production of series two. Miss Jason will be very out and very about on the streets of the United Kingdom bringing her own sense (can we use that word in this circumstance?) of local knowledge and history to present in her inimitable way to her madcap guests. Who knows – anything can happen and be sure – it does. Look out for the new series coming very soon and you can cacth up with the first series online at thelatest.co.uk
