f you’ve ever wanted to help the growing number of homeless people on our streets now’s your chance – while bagging an indulgent treat at the same time. Sussex Homeless Support – a volunteer-run charity funded entirely by your donations – is currently running an online auction but you’ll have to hurry as it winds up on March 14 at 8pm! Winter is the hardest time of the year for homeless people and it is the time that the charity’s funds are most stretched, so please support this fantastic fundraiser at jumblebee.co.uk/auction/detail/auction_id/2995
HOMELESS BY THE SEA
“ Every Sunday the charity feeds more than 120 people at a street kitchen near the clocktower ” There are 75 amazing lots on offer, including goodie bags donated by the BRIT Awards, a one day TV skills taster course with Latest TV, a gorgeous pink guitar, rainbow cake from Cloud 9, highlights, cut & blowdry from Gorgeous Hair and your chance to feature in a new book by authors Cair Going & Nils Visser, which will be loosely based on Sussex Homeless Support and the characters connected to the charity. The charity supports homeless people and rough sleepers in Brighton and surrounding areas. Every Sunday it feeds more than 120 at a street kitchen at Brighton’s Clocktower and each Monday over 60 people are fed through the Antifreeze Project. It makes up weekly food parcels for people in temporary accommodation, ex-servicemen and those on the poverty line. It has also converted two buses on the seafront into night shelters, accommodating a total of 20 people and their pets. Hot meals and drinks are supplied and volunteer advisers are on hand to chat, support and signpost people to helpful services. If by the time you read this, the auction has ended, don’t despair. Oliver Dall of Oliver’s Brighton (the Wizarding shop) is hosting a special exhibition throughout the month of June in My Brighton hotel, culminating in a charity auction in their award-winning cocktail bar Merkaba on Friday 5th of July from 18.00. With around 40 pieces of original artwork and with every penny going to SHS, this is a must for your social calendar. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

andrew kay dines out with a mound of thinly sliced sun dried tomatoes. It was not only delicious, well balanced and perfectly cooked, it was also generous. I’ve been served smaller main courses on many an occasion. So on that note on to the prices. The hake and salad came at a modest £11.50 and my two dishes were £5.50

I had gone along as a staging post before a new opera at Glyndebourne and as such we did not touch the driks menu, no one wants to sleep at the county’s brilliant opera house. “A lareg salad that truly deserved the title spring ” and stylish to robust trenceherman fare. It now boasts somewhere that has once again caught my eye. Depot is a cinema with a cafe and bar, nothing particularly new about that idea, except that few manage to pull off the cafe element beyone decent coffee and cake. Depot takes the idea a whole leap forward with a short but well designed menu of dishes that start with a full English breakfast that reads well, through a selection of small dishes to larger offerings and daily specials. And all this in a striking new building that is a glass pavilion enetered through a cuboid tunnel of knapped flints, a triumph of simple modern architecture with

this was no skimpy portion, a tranche of hake that would shame the average restaurant’s meagre offerings, perfectly cooked and sat on a large salad that truly deserved the title “spring”. It was packed with beautifully presented vegetables, vibrant in colour and crisp, their words. I was drawn to the small dishes, first seduced by baby squid with aioli. I love fried squid and this was excellent and yes, the squid was baby sized, but not the portion, there was plenty and plenty of good aioli too, hot with the zing of garlic. My second dish was dare I say it even better. Roasted bay fennel delivered on a bed of tapenade

stage young waiter, as he nervously awaits the arrival of an old flame, actress Carlotta Gray, with whom he enjoyed a two-year love affair more than forty years ago. What can she possibly want now? Revenge for his uncharitable characterisation of her in his recent autobiography? Money to compensate for her second-rate acting career in the States? But as Sir Hugo discovers, it turns out Carlotta is writing her own memoir and wants something much more significant than cash. First staged in the West End in 1966, Noël Coward himself made his stage farewell in A Song At Twilight playing the semi-autobiographical role of Sir Hugo. Full of Coward’s usual sharp wit and repartee, this compelling drama poignantly explores the risk of harbouring secrets and the regret of missed opportunities. Simon Callow stars as Sir Hugo Latymer. One of the UK’s favourite actors, his numerous film credits include Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love, The Phantom of the Opera, Amadeus, A Room with a View, Maurice, The Woman in White and A Christmas Carol plus extensive TV and stage work. Accomplished actress Jane Asher stars as Carlotta Gray. Her recent screen appearances include Holby City playing Lady Byrne; the comedy I Give It A Year; Stephen Poliakoff's five-part BBC drama Dancing on the Edge; CBBC’s sci-fi series Eve; and the BBC1 sitcom The Old Guys. The role of Hilde Latymer is played by Jessica Turner (Doctor Finlay, Prime Suspect) and the cast is completed by Ash Rizi as Felix (Luther, EastEnders, Drifters, Silent Witness and Unforgotten). A Song at Twilight Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne 1 – 6 April. eastbournetheatres.co.uk Box Office 01323 412000

N
oël Coward wrote a great canon of work for both stage and screen but despite the popularity of his earlier works, his later works are somewhat overlooked. Now two of the UK’s leading actors, Simon Callow and Jane Asher are starring in a sparkling new production of his 1966 play A Song at Twilight, which will be directed by Stephen Unwin as part of a UK tour. Bittersweet and hugely entertaining, this is a rare chance to see one of Coward's final pieces of work. World famous author Sir Hugo Latymer is growing old, rude and haughty. In the private suite of a lakeside hotel he is attended to by his long-suffering wife and former secretary, Hilde, and Felix, a handsome

unning a local TV channel is often a race against time, and one of the most fun aspects is creating new shows whilst producing the regular daily news, current affairs and entertainment shows that grace channel 7. This last week, we have completed for broadcast not one, but 6 new shows which include the following:
EXTRA ORDINARY PEOPLE Our wonderful news host, Yael Breuer interviews extraordinary people in this new series. This week with Niklas Frank talking about an astonishing family history.
HAPPY VALLEY? In this one hour news roundup, we ask the question, will Valley Gardens by Happy Valley or Traffic Queue Gardens? We chart the conflict over Phase 3 of Valley Gardens, in particular the controversial Option 1 design which creates a 5 lane road on the East side of the Old Steine, whilst the west side outside of the Royal Pavilion is pedestrianised. This creates a divided Brighton and could cause a huge amount of traffic congestion and pollution argue those against. We listen to both sides of the story.
