SHADOWLANDS

Hugh Bonneville is C.S. Lewis in William Nicholson’s award winning play at Chichester Festival Theatre T

he extraordinary and moving love story of ‘Narnia’ writer C.S. Lewis is told in the award-winning play Shadowlands by William Nicholson, which runs at Chichester Festival Theatre from 26 April – 25 May. Hugh Bonneville, whose many television and film appearances include Downton Abbey, W1A and Paddington, plays C.S. Lewis, who was one of the most influential writers of his day and is still best known for his children’s classics The Chronicles of Narnia which have been widely adapted for stage, screen and radio. ‘William Nicholson’s contribution to the script of the movie Gladiator and his more recent screenplay, Breathe, were both deeply affecting (I appeared in the latter, so perhaps I’m biased)’, says Hugh. ‘He writes about love and suffering with extraordinary insight and compassion. So his exploration of the life of sheltered, certain C.S. Lewis being disrupted by such powerful forces is a story I can’t wait to tell.’ Joy Gresham, the New York poet with whom Lewis fell in love, will be played by Liz White, a familiar face from TV series like Life on Mars, Ackley Bridge and The Halcyon. ‘I saw the film of Shadowlands years ago,’ Liz says. ‘Joy is immediately striking. Not least because in a room surrounded by men, in 1952 she asserts herself as an equal. I admired her directness and her wit.’ It was in 1952 that C.S. ‘Jack’ Lewis first met Joy Gresham. They became close friends and when Joy’s husband requested a divorce, Lewis agreed to enter into a civil marriage so that she and her two sons could remain in the UK. In 1956 Joy was diagnosed with cancer and the relationship between her and Lewis deepened. His subsequent, widely admired memoir of love

Hugh Bonneville

“Nicholson writes about love and suffering with extraordinary insight and compassion” and loss, A Grief Observed, was so deeply raw and personal that it was published under a pseudonym and his authorship revealed only after his death in 1963. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is still one of the bestloved books of all time and The Times ranked him eleventh on their list of ‘The 50 Greatest British Writers since 1945’. In 2013, on the 50th anniversary of his death, a memorial to Lewis was installed in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey. Shadowlands runs at Chichester Festival Theatre until 25 May with tickets from £10; visit www.cft.org.uk

PRECOGNITION THE SCIENCE OF CREATING SCI-FI

P

recognition is an independent science fiction feature film created by filmmakers from Ascot, Surrey. The film was selected to be a part of several festivals including London Sci-fi and Other Worlds Austin. Among the cast are Adam J Bernard (Dreamgirls) and Hattie Gotobed (Game of Thrones). The story is set in the near future, a man experiences terrifying visions of a past he can’t remember. His partner, who secretly works for a company that manipulates memory, attempts to uncover the mysteries surrounding them. One of the biggest challenges we faced making the film was creating a believable futuristic yet realistic world to tell the story with limited resources. There are over four hundred visual effects shots in the film and production took place over a three year period, beginning preproduction back in early 2016.

HONEST BURGER or a man who grew up in the era when burger meant a Wimpy on the high street or a Whistler at the fun fair, burgers are something of a gamble. And in

“Honest Burger is cool, relaxed, and the food is hot and tasty ” recent years with alomost every food place purporting to create “gourmet” burgers or deliver “the best” burger in town, this humble dish can be a grave disappointment. Not last night! Honest Burger is in town and considering that as an idea it started here, it’s about time. It was a fascinating evening with the two guys behind the brand telling us quite frankly about how naive they were when they started and how passionate

For once I got really very enthusiastic about a burger. Yes I have liked burgers before but this time, having tasted a patty on its own I was blown away by the succulence, tenderness and flavour of the meat. It was quite amazing. possible. The tribute burger I moved on to was great too, a plain bun, no sesame seed to irritatingly lodge in the teeth, American cheese, pickles etc – and more of those chips dressed with rosemary salt, their own mix where the herb is ground as fine as the salt to achieve the proper effect – far better than slinging whole leaves into the fryer where they burn and become acrid. They are licensed too so there are local craft ales, their own blend of gin and a fine range of soft drinks. Honest Burger is cool and relaxed, the food is hot and tasty, the provenance is sound, not making claims that they cannot substantiate but I sensed pretty honourable. I might have given in to burgers, I will certainly be back to try them again, perhaps next time the Brighton burger, a take on surf and turf. 8 Duke St, Brighton BN1 1AH 01273 916352 honestburgers.co.uk

stage AMERICAN IDIOT

Winner of two Tony Awards and the 2010 Grammy Award winner for Best Musical Show Album, American Idiot is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9/11 world. The show, which premiered in December 2009 at Berkeley Rep Theatre, features the music of Green Day with the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong and book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer. This thrilling musical has had Green Day fans in rapture and introduced a generation of theatregoers to their powerful and moving musical style. This story of youthful disillusion and mistrust of society and government has never been more current; particularly with the modern parallels in the USA where school children have mobilised to form an impressive campaign for gun law reform. The musical’s hit songs include Boulevard of Broken Dreams, 21 Guns, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Holiday and the blockbuster title track American Idiot from Green Day’s 2004 Grammy Award winning, multi platinum album. Also included are several songs from Green Day’s 2009 release 21st Century Breakdown, and an unreleased love song, When It’s Time. The tour comes from Selladoor Productions, producers of 'Flashdance', 'Fame', 'Avenue Q', and 'Little Shop of Horrors'.Full casting has been announced for the special 10th anniversary tour of American Idiot – the ground breaking Tony award winning rock musical with music by punk pop and multi Grammy award winning band Green Day. UP NORTH DOWN SOUTH OUR FRIENDS IN THE NORTH!

T

he award-winning sitcom Up North is coming to Latest TV this April at 10:30 pm all the way from Yorkshire. This low budget sitcom from

“A mickey take of Yorkshire folk and the crazy things they get up to ” Steve Call Productions features comedy legends Bernie Clifton and Billy Pearce. The comedy show is a mickey take on Yorkshire folk and the crazy things they get up to and it’s written by Yorkshire actor Dean Sills, who also plays the lead role of Mick Smith. Steve Call is the director of Up North, he also edits the show, creates the music and plays the role of Patch, a one-eyed taxi driver who gets blackmailed by Mick after a fire starts at their local pub. Steve and Dean also have their daughter’s working on the show with Steve’s daughter Millie Grace Call working on camera and Dean’s daughter Rebecca Sills making the props. Up North is going from strength to strength after it originally started out as a short film which then became a pilot episode when the online TV Channel Essex TV picked the show up in 2016 and funded and commissioned season 1. Season 2 was then commissioned by Sheffield Live! And now Latest TV will be broadcasting season 2. Steve Call and Dean Sills won a platinum award in January 2017 for their show Up North voted by Essex TV viewers in December 2016 as one of the top 5 shows to watch on Essex-TV and for reaching 100,000 viewers. Steve and Dean make a great team and have already started filmingseason 3 and they are delighted to have Billy Pearce back in the cast. The two of them first met in 2012 on the set of Steve’s first feature film A Total Thug Up, where Dean had a small role in the feature. Steve

liked Dean’s passion and cast him as the lead role of Trevor Wallis in Steve’s second feature Tears in the Dust, a gritty northern drama about homelessness. It was during that time Dean told Steve about an idea he had for a comedy and he pitched the script to Steve who loved it and decided to make it. It is hard to believe the two of them are now working on the third series. Viewers in Brighton will get to see just how crazy life Up North can be when Latest TV broadcast the 5 funny episodes from season 2. The first episode Wildlife Up North, sees an explosion in the pub and Mick blackmailing local taxi driver Patch Thatch into giving him 10 free taxi rides, since Patch was the one who started the fire by accident. Also the character Daft Dave gets a new job as a Zoo Keeper at Sheffield Zoo and gives Mick two free tickets... but disaster strikes when Dada the gorilla escapes from the zoo. Then the laughter continues with 4 more episodes including Fishing Up North and Dating Up North.
