WINNER! WINNER! WINNER!

A HAT TRICK OF AWARDS FOR OAKLEY LEWES

T

he team at Oakley Property in Lewes have had the most incredible six months landing not one, not two but three separate awards! Back in November Oakley won the Professional Services Award at Lewes District Business Awards dinner. Then the next award set Oakley up for an excellent Christmas when Lewes Director David Beaken and Oakley Executive Chairman Chris Oakley were presented with Lewes Business of the Year Award by the Rotary Club of Lewes. To cap off a hat trick of awards Oakley Property has just won first place in The British Property Awards for both their Lewes and Shoreham Offices and to top it all Oakley have now been shortlisted for a number of national awards which will be announced later in the year. The prestigious British Property Awards provide agents throughout the UK with an invaluable opportunity to compare the service that they provide against the service provided by their local, regional and national competition. Agents who go that extra mile and provide outstanding levels of customer service are rewarded with the accolade. Robert McLean from The British Property Awards said “Our award has been designed to remove any opportunity for bias or manipulation. If an agent

has been attributed with one of our awards, it is simply down to the fantastic customer service levels that they have demonstrated across a prolonged period of time. Winning agents should be proud that their customer service levels provide a benchmark for their local, regional and national competition”. David Beaken, director at Oakley and Vice President of The Brighton & Hove Estate Agents Association, commented, “our team always offers an outstanding level of service, so for this to be recognised throughout the extensive judging period for these awards, which is focused on customer service levels, is a real testament to our team’s commitment to provide the best service in the area.” Oakley 01273 487444 or oakleyproperty.com

andrew kay dines out

THE COPPER CLAM won a raffle prize in January, a voucher to dine worth a decent sum of money that had generously been donated for the Brighton Housing Trust event held at Market in Hove. It was given by The Copper Clam, a restaurant in a seafront arch that I had yet to visit. So on a fine spring evening I was joined by the delightful Ms M for a fishy dinner. The location could not be

I

“I fell on it like a man possessed” better and our window table had fine views out to sea, a reminder for me that I tend to take our seafront rather for granted most of the time. The menu is fish led and there are some very tempting seafood platters too but although drawn by the idea of crab and lobster we both had spotted dishes on the rest of the menu that appealed. And for those of you who do not like fish there is a section of grills that reads pretty well too – but

handed over a succulent fork full. Amongst the shared dishes I had spotted a cataplana that had been very tempting and our server, the manager, kindly pointed out that it was also available for one. What a great idea! My main course arrived in a lidded copper dish and was a beautiful stew of fish and shellfish, clams, mussels, prawns and chunks of fish in a rich tomato sauce spiked with spicy sausage. On the side a basket of crusty bread to mop up the delicious juices. I fell on it like a man possessed, it was heartwarming tasty and generous

for us it was fish. To start we decided to try the crab beignets, squid with chilli dip and oysters Rockefeller. The beignets were the least successful, heavy and bland, sorry, the squid was good, very tender but I would have liked more and the chilli dipping sauce was excellent, well balanced and moreish. The oysters were superb and three each was plenty. Cooked oysters can be grim, over cooked they become rubbery, but these were tender and juicy. Ms M had decided to have the skate with caper and lemon butter. It’s a classic and a favourite of mine too. But I was recently served such a small scrap of wing and that had been burnt to a carbon coated frazzle that I was rather put off. This was a fine example and generous too, a whole wing from a not too huge fish, cooked to a golden brown but falling from the bone in long threads of sweet flesh. Beneath a bed of steamed green vegetables and atop a handsome scattering of capers. I looked on with clear envy which Ms M recognised and

to a fault. It took me some time to wade through the delights of this dish and all the time planning an excuse to return and eat the very same dish again. We drank a bottle of Albariño which was an excellent match to all of our food and sensibly priced too and when our server returned to try and tempt us to a dessert we were both sated. Sadly missing out of a pud she returned with two glasses of a chocolate flavoured dessert wine to which I added, in lieu of a pudding a cup of hot chocolate. It was good, sweet but not too sweet and smooth rather than powdery. We both enjoyed the relaxed and unhurried atmosphere of the Copper Clam and based on our main courses would definitely be back. In a world where restaurant portions can verge on dainty these generous plates put smiles on our faces. 143-144 Kings Road Arches Brighton, BN1 2FN 01273 323847 thecopperclam.com

stage carefree indulgence must end as the Nazis smash their way to power. A young Christopher Isherwood is in Berlin looking for inspiration for a book and he certainly finds it when vibrant and vivacious actress and cabaret performer Sally Bowles bursts into his life. Is Sally a sophisticated thrill-seeker or a callous and cruel opportunist or perhaps she’s just a vulnerable innocent abroad? Whatever she is, she’s certainly a fascinating mass of contradictions. Chris and Sally's adventure in a city at a unique turning point in history is a profound and deeply resonating story, yet sexy and funny in the face of it all. Starring award winning actress Kitty Rose Newbury as Sally Bowles,

“ Berlin, 1931. When the decadence was divine ” John Black as Christopher Isherwood and Christine Kempell as Fräuline Schneider. Although the original Berlin Stories (Mr Norris Changes Trains and Goodbye to Berlin) were written over 80 years ago, the themes of liberation, extreme political movements and the dangers of complacency resonate as strongly today as they ever did. e all know the film with Liza Minelli and good as it is in its own way it’s not a real reflection of the Isherwood novel. The stage version is better, more poignant, darker too, but still it’s far from the novel. Now multi-award nominated Blue Devil Productions’ I am a Camera written by John Van Druten and directed by Ross Dinwiddy, is coming to Brighton Fringe for 6 nights in May. In this rare revival of the play upon which Cabaret is based, we see a rich picture of heartbreaking pathos, wicked comedy and the divine decadence of 1931 Berlin - but soon the
