THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF BRIGHTON & HOVE RADIO SHOW
(FOR TV!)
T
he People’s Republic of Brighton and Hove radio-show (for TV) is a grassroots community programme providing the answer to the question: What is the difference that makes Brighton and Hove such a wonderful city? We explore the wild, the quirky, the generous and compassionate, kind and creative hidden in the valleys, back alleys and beautiful parks.
“The show is maybe a little silly, but very well meaning! ” Here you will find the likes of “Mothers Uncorked”; “Brighton Story Tellers”; “Qukelele”, and; “Cast Iron theatre” alongside the likes of “Invisible Voices Brighton:; “Happy Startup School”; “Unite the Beat”, and “Disability Pride. And we must mention the wealth of charities we’ve interviewed as well, including Justlife; The Survivor’s Network and; Grassroots Suicide Prevention. We have a mission: which is very much about a celebration of the uniqueness, and diversity that makes up the community; the activism focused on “doing” rather than “demonstrating”. Want to know about our history? Well - We were originally inspired by the fact that our community ended up voting in Green and Labour MP's in a Tory region at the last two general elections. On a political map we looked like an island of green and red in a vast sea of blue. That was the joke that launched the Republic, a Facebook community that has grown into a gathering that currently has over 22,000 readers. Presented by Jason Smart (PRBH Founding Father, comedy writer and minstrel); Deborah (Debs) Lennard (fundraiser, host of charity quizzes and events and open mic stand-up comedian); Madelaine Hunter-Taylor (founder of the Rita Project CIC); Genevieve Applebee (superpower: invisibility), and; Andy Cheng (PRBH Minister for ‘Welcoming comments, no matter how f*cked up) – the show is brought to you every week with love and heart felt compassion.
The PRBH show goes out weekly to Latest TV's Thursdays 6:30pm and 8:30pm Latest TV: Freeview 7 Virgin Media 159 and online at https://thelatest.co.uk/latest-tv/ The show is maybe a little silly, but very well meaning. You can read more about the show here: www.facebook.com/PRBHradio AND NOW – IT’S YOUR TURN! Are you doing something wonderful in the city? Dowsing? Healing the sick through the power of music, hugs, plants? Rising up in solidarity with your neighbours? Creating your very own choir, anarchic knitting circle? Have just formed your very own LGBTQAI+ bikers gang? Anything making the beautiful republic of Brighton and Hove a better place to be – come get in touch! We’ll be more than happy to chat with you on air, in our show.

out latino américa
T
here are moments when steak is the answer. I get to eat some pretty exotic stuff, inventive dishes, experimental and sometimes out there – but steak is a joy or at least when it is good quality and well looked after by the kitchen. I mourned the loss of Fleur and Nicky at their great steak house in Preston Street where a steak was a fine thing, but recently friends have been raving about Latino América in Hove so off I went with Mr L for a meaty evening. Latino America and it’s partner venue Café Malbec are Argentinian and heartily so. The owner is 100% Argentine but with a fabulously Irish name, but it is his passion for all things Argentinian and South American that raise the bar at this great place. I voiced that I was not really wanting to drink much so he suggested we did a tasting of his wines, a great idea I thought but in truth I probably drank far more than if we had chosen a bottle. It was certainly worth it, his list is packed with delicious wines that
prime Argentine steak cuts (170g each) Cuadril-Rump/Bife de chorizo - Sirloin/Ojo de bife - Rib Eye/Lomo-Fillet Served with two choices of house salad, rice or chips. If it sounds like a daunting amount of food then do not be afraid, you can graze slowly across the board as we did and be very comfortable by the end, although dessert was not an option. The steaks are sublime, we started at the fillet, the cut that would be best eaten straight from the grill and it was as tender as a very tender thing, but then each steak as we progressed could have been cut with a butter knife. The sweet tender fillet was great but each cut increased in flavour and texture to the very best peice of rump I have ever tasted, and I have tasted a lot. Our side dishes of hand cut chips and fries, excellent sauces and a bowl of cheesy creamed sweetcorn were superb too and generous. It’s priced at £58 but divide that in two and subtract the side dishes and really is remarkably good value, especially when you take into account the superb quality of the beef and the precise cooking. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, no pretentions whatsoever and the service was charming and helpful. Halfway through the evening a fairly large party arrived unannounced and they were seated and sated and left with smiles on their faces, always a good sign when a team front and back of house can cope with the unexpected. Having declined dessert we did try one of the boozy cake pops which added a sweet note to an otherwise savoury evening. I certainly know where I will head next time the urge for a steak rears its head and I would readily pop in for a bit of an empenada feast if passing. Great wines, steaks and ambience, it’s clear to see why people are raving about this Argentinian gem. 36 Church Rd, Hove BN3 2FN 01273770355 latinoamerica.co.uk
“It’s clear to see why people rave about this Argentinian gem” are certainly a challenge for their old world couterparts. The food offer is simple but simply divine and we started with empanadas, a dish that he explained is not for sharing. we both nodded with approval. We ordered three, one each and one to secretly divide when he was not looking. In Café Malbec they are baked and next door they are fried, we had the healthier option but I will be back to try the other versions for sure. Our fillings were goats cheese with wild mushrooms, blue cheese and finally spicy chicken. They are just the right size, neither mean nor too large to start with and when I say fillings I mean really full! That done it was time to move on to the main event, the steak. Now these are imported from Argentina, a process that means they are matured in transit. There are lots of options but at Mr Kelly’s suggestion we shared the Argentine Meat Experience. This is a fine selection of
