THE CRAFTY DOG FESTIVAL IS COMING TO BRIGHTON
T
he dog loving people of Brighton & Hove are in for a treat! The ‘Say Aphasia’ charity are introducing The Crafty Dog Festival on Saturday 21st September in Preston Park, Brighton. Entry is free to all and opening times are from 10am - 4pm. You will be able to enjoy a day out with your dog and meet other dogs and owners. You can get involved in our dog show, try an agility class, purchase local homemade dog treats and handmade dog accessories and much more! “I have raised a labradoodle dog who is now 8, and is my first and only dog I have raised and looked after, and over the years I found myself becoming part of a community which I had not expected. And this dog community continues to grow. I also began to discover so many artists and craft makers who produced handmade dog related products. And so I want to bring together this crafty community who are all inspired by those we love the most - our canine friends!”
THE GROUP AIMS TO: ● Provide a supportive place for people with aphasia ● Reduce loneliness for people with aphasia ● Increase confidence with people with aphasia ● Provide a place to socialise for people with aphasia ● Improve the wellbeing of those with aphasia ● Help to adapt to this new way of life Aphasia is a communication disability which occurs when the communication centres of the brain are damaged. It is usually caused by a stroke, brain haemorrhage, head injury or a brain tumour. Aphasia makes it difficult to read, write or speak. It affects people differently. Some people are unable to speak at all, others may have difficulty finding the right words to say or have difficulty reading, writing or using numbers. It affects relationships, employment, education, social lives and confidence. Aphasia affects around 350,000 people in the UK. The fact that this condition is rarely heard of, contributes to the loneliness that aphasia sufferers experience.
“The Crafty Dog Festival aims to raise funds and awareness for the charity, while bringing together the local community to celebrate our canine friends ”
SPONSOR he event is sponsored by local photographer Lauren Christien Photography. Someone who is very passionate about the charity and also a massive fan of dogs. laurenchristienphotography.com
T
21st of September, Preston Park The Crafty Dog Festival aims to raise funds and awareness for the charity, while bringing together the local community to celebrate our canine friends. Many people haven’t heard of this condition ‘aphasia’ and so the people in Brighton & Hove who live with it are left with little support - we need to change this. Say Aphasia charity supports people with the condition aphasia by providing weekly drop in groups for these people to meet others in the same situation.

afternoon tea at the grand
T
here are few institutions more British than afternoon tea and few places grander than The Grand to take it. I always liked the phrase “taking afternoon tea”, far more suited to such a refined activity than any other meal. The Grand is without doubt a jewel on the city’s seafront, and recent renovations and restorations have raised the bar even further. Taking tea in the conservatory is glamorous and stylish, from the beautiful decor to fabulous china decorated with birds and bugs. When you drink tea out of a fine china cup it makes you want to bin your crude and heavy mugs. There are several choices on the menu but of course we went for the full
Well funnily enough on the day we attended we were treated to entertainment, excerpts from a selection of Shows from the fabulous Warren at the heart of the Fringe. A poet, a comic, a short turn from a play about local hero Max Miller and a couple of songs from my very favourite local singer Hannah Brackenbury. And whilst this jollification was taking place our sweet offerings were delivered. At this point I could here my mother saying “your eyes are bigger than your belly” – she would not have been wrong. First scones, two each, one plain, one fruit and with them jam and clotted cream. Good scones too, not a hint of bicarbonate of soda that so often mars this classic. In truth one would have done and that will become clear in a moment. Scones devoured I moved on the patisserie, starting with a delightful eclair filled with a delicate gently coffee flavour créme patissiere and coated in white chocolate, then a rich and bitter chocolate mousse cake, both divine. The lemon meringue was good but not stellar, the curd great but not enough and the meringue a little gritty, small faults to be honest and I feel mean pointing them out. A shot glass of elderflower jelly with fresh raspberries and a raspberry cream was wonderfully refreshing but required invention as the spoon did not reach the bottom of the glass, don’t worry, I found a way. On the last layers of our tea stand two large slices of citrus and polenta cake beckoned but I was sated. Mr L skipped the lemon meringue and went for this and declared it as light as a feather. What a lovely way to while away and afternoon, it’s not just a meal, it’s an experience made all the better by immaculate and charming service in what must be the prettiest room on the seafront. grandbrighton.co.uk To book call 01273 224300 or email: eat@grandbrighton.co.uk
“The Grand is without doubt a jewel on the city’s seafront” works, The Victoria Grand Afternoon Tea. You can do it with Brighton Gin or champagne but Mr L and I were going trad for once. Or at least I was, Mr L chose a cherry blossom tea , the devil! I stuck with earl grey and it reminded me that my coffee habit has got way out of hand. Everything comes in very traditional manner and I was delighted to see that we had a pot of hot water to refresh our leaf tea and strainers too, no ecologically unsound tea-bags here. Tea comes in two stages and to start we had perfect little goat cheese and spinach quiches, dainty but not mean. Next a selection of finger sandwiches, excellent ham, cucumber and cream cheese, egg (I love egg sandwiches!) and very generously filled poached salmon. Poached salmon is a far better option than smoked salmon which can flood the palate for hours after. Sipping hot tea, and nibbling dainty sandwiches whilst looking out to the sparkling sea on a sunny day – what could be better?

stage Dead Dog In A Suitcase
A Steady Rain
All I See Is You
My Left Right Foot: The Musical
DIFFERENT STAGES LATEST’S ANDREW KAY TALKS ABOUT THEATRE IN THE FESTIVAL righton’s parallel festivals are no doubt a huge celebration of arts of all disciplines, from popular entertainment to the classics. I’m a fan of both but above all my love still lies in theatre – and there is much to see, in fact too much to embrace without becoming sated. I was interested in a review submitted by one of my colleagues, a woman of excellent taste and education. She points out that too many shows, in the fringe programme, are billed as being works in progress, harking back to the idea that Brighton is the ideal trail arena for shows that are Edinburgh bound. I agree and over the years I have seen some pretty unformed work, even rehearsals at picked tickets. It’s not for me. Conversely this year I have been treated to some really excellent theatre. In the main festival I loved this years show from Kneehigh, Dead Dog In a Suitcase was this impressive ensemble at their very best. A full on explosion of modern theatre arts that was gripping from start to finish. And a complete contrast from their elegant production last year, The Flying Lovers of Gdansk, such versatility and passion on both occasions, clearly what keeps them at the top of their game. National Theatre of Scotland’s My Right Left Foot was equally impressive and blisteringly funny, pushing the bounds of what we can and cannot laugh it, it opened up a whole can of PC worms and stamped on them. Again a company who create pure theatre magic. And in the main festival that is what we should and have come to expect. It’s there in the fringe too and this year I have been blown away

“ With a cast of two, a clever set and excellent direction they achieved more in two hour than Hollywood does with expensive stars and multi-billion dollar budgets ” by by three extraordinary plays. Firstly The Milkman’s On His Way, a superb dramatisation of David Rees’ fantastic and ground breaking gay novel. It rang so true for those of us who grew up through Thatcher’s homophobic reign and deserves to be seen everywhere. Kathryn Smith’s All I See Is You took a poignant look at gay love prior to the partial decriminalisation of Homosexuality in the late sixties, a love story with a tragic twist, a look at class and oppression that was in barely an hour, deeply moving with two very fine performances. My final pick of the season has to be A Steady Rain, an amazing full length production that simply blew me away. Fringe projects are so often executed on a tight budget and the word is that a fringe audience will not cope with anything over an hour in length. Well that is simply not true when you are seeing something as compelling as this. With a cast of two, a clever set and excellent direction they achieved more in two hours than Hollywood does with expensive stars and multi-billion dollar budgets. This was modern noir at its very best, no frills talent, shocking, disturbing, scary and moving. To hell with the cinema blockbuster, give me more of this.

CHEWING THE CUD
W
e’re living in a very serious world. The big issues of the day can seem larger than ever, with no real resolutions in sight. If you stop to consider this for very long, it will provide little comfort. But a new TV show called Chewing the Cud might help you to forget all of this for a while. Sometimes we all need respite from the troubles in our lives, an antidote to all that is dull and gloomy.
- all with an interesting story to tell. The Spotlight section allows us to probe our guestof-the-week a little deeper. Expect innuendo (we often try to ease a little one in), a little sauciness and lots of laughs. The show is a great distraction, with plenty of titters, belly-laughs and guffaws, all with interesting guests, from an LGBT perspective. Bored with Brexit? Weary of Westminster? Fed up by finances? “Expect innuendo (we often try to ease a little one in), a little sauciness and lots of laughs ” A chat show filmed at a Victorian cotton mill in Manchester, Chewing the Cud concentrates on the frivolous world of showbiz, social trends and all things lighthearted, with laughter, banter and weekly special guests. Neil, with a background in local radio, is our host. His keen eye for detail and quick wit, bring out the extra dimensions in the stories shared by our two other hosts, Leigh and Mike. Leigh shares a round-up of the week’s showbiz news. His love for all that is sparkly, glittery and preferably covered in rainbows and unicorns gives an indication of the stories he might cover, though he can never find as many Kylie Minogue stories as he would like. Evan Davis, Laura Kuenssberg or John Humphrys he is not and he never lets the truth get in the way of a good story. Mike is next, rounding up the hottest and silliest social media trends over the past week. Whether it’s hashtags on Twitter, the latest topical meme, or an internet challenge everyone’s cottoned onto, Mike brings us up to date on the silliest things we might have missed. He welcomes emails too, from anyone who has something interesting to say, and regularly complains that his empty [mail] box needs stuffing. The guests vary enormously - from stand-up comedians to fashion designers; from musicians to martial artists; and from witches to bakers
can’t promise to solve the world’s problems but we can provide an hour of escapism, fun and frivolity. Catch Chewing the Cud at 9pm every Tuesday on The Latest Brighton TV channel, or catch up at Cudcast.com.
