CONROY’S ACOUSTIC SHOWCASE THE BEST GIG IN TOWN! C
onroy’s acoustic showcase has just had its first birthday and not enough people know about this incredible opportunity for musicians. “The Idea originated over a couple of pints in Hove” said Nick. “After chatting to my girlfriend Jacqui about creating opportunities for musicians, we came up with Conroy’s Acoustic Takeaway, the idea being that the musicians could take away their live recording on a USB, straight after playing. This was fraught with problems, many forgot their USB’s, and due to this I had to send their work to them after the gig. Whilst doing this, I couldn’t help but mix their music, so the takeaway was dropped and it became a showcase, with a difference”. Conroy’s acoustic showcase is a monthly event. Hosted by the Garden Bar in Hove, run by singer/songwriter & producer Nick Conroy. All acts are handpicked “There is so much South Coast talent that’s undiscovered” says Nick. “Everyone walks away with their live set, professionally recorded/mixed by myself for free. In fact they get a brilliant free

Nick’s background has always been music, from running his own bands, currently The Speak, to recording, mixing and mastering. Recently Nick has returned from Studios La Fabrique in Provence after completing a mixing and production course with Eddie Kramer (Hendrix, Beatles, Kinks, Zeppelin) “It was an incredible experience, to be working alongside one of the greatest producers in the Industry, I learnt so much” says Nick. Goran Goulash - amazing night, great venue and lovely hosts - the quality of the multitrack recording is exceptional, I couldn't recommend this night enough; I'm honoured to have had the opportunity to play for the acoustic take away! THE LANDLADY Busman's Holiday....
T
his year so far, I've had quite a variety of Airbnb guests in my house. For the uninitiated, this is not an easy task for me, as I rent out my own bedroom to the guests, because it has a lovely ensuite. This means that technically, the Airbnb guests shouldn't interfere with the day to day lives of my full-time lodgers and I don't have to worry about things like the random skid marks often deposited in the communal toilet used mainly by my (quelle surprise) male lodgers, who seem to be colour-blind when it comes to a certain shade of brown. I am filled with horror at the thought that I might one day have a bad review about the cleanliness of my lavatory. To be honest, I haven't even been in the country for the last few Airbnb
I am currently enjoying staying in a very wellappointed Airbnb in Oslo with The Cuban Boyfriend. He lives here, so I spend some time every month in Norway as a picky guest myself. I have to say, the Norwegians leave no stone unturned when it comes to hospitality. In fact, we always bring our dirty clothes here to wash, as the washing machine is of a more superior quality to the one I have at home (which at any rate is usually full of my lodgers' underpants). They also provide free laundry capsules, which appeals to
“ As a picky guest myself I have to say the Norwegians leave no stone unturned when it comes to hospitality” guests and they have been let into Landlady Towers by The Small Daughter, who is much more friendly than The Big Daughter, who quite frankly would have made most guests cancel their booking forthwith with her frosty countenance, had she been left in charge. The Big Son in his day, could not have been left in charge of an open can of Tango without something terrible happening, so I reward The Small Daughter handsomely for her efforts.
my penny-pinching side no end. As I write this, The Cuban is gently snoring on the (superior quality) sofa. Let's just say that the night was not young when we retired last night. The night was so old that it was in a wheelchair and had a telegram from the Queen. I'm so bored, I think I might put a wash on......

HAIR X FACTOR FINALIST MARCUS COLLINS TELLS US ABOUT STARRING IN THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR OF HAIR & WHY THE FREE LOVE MUSICAL IS STILL SO VERY RELEVANT Tell us, Marcus, what’s Hair all about? The musical is set in 1967, when people are receiving their draft cards and being called up to go off to the Vietnam War. It’s about a group of funloving hippies from New York. There are so many different personalities in the group; everyone gets their own moment to do their own thing and tell their story. The show’s really about the fight against being conventional. It’s the fight against the conservative, doing the 9 to 5, having a briefcase, getting your hair cut and following the status quo. The tribe is all about free love, taking psychedelics and transcendental meditation. They want to get their consciousness to a place where everybody is just love. But one of the tribe is called up to go to war. We follow that narrative and see what happens. What particularly attracted you to the show? One of the main points that touched me was when it’s set, in 1969, civil rights had just come in. Racism was so heavy. In this show I use words that I wouldn’t use to refer to my worst enemy, words that have been used to me and made me cry my eyes out. As I’ve grown up into the black man that I am now, as opposed to the child, I now take ownership of those words and I understand them. Those words are not to be ignored, not to be pushed aside. The N word was the last word that so many people heard before they were hung, before they died, before they lost their lives due to the fact they were born black. I’m mixed race and I still find it difficult to hear that word. It’s going to be fascinating to watch the dynamics of that and how different audiences react. This is the 50th anniversary production of the show. Do you think it’s still relevant? Absolutely. Nothing has changed. Every president throughout time has gone to war. People are still being forced into not being who they really are because of the status quo. You’re not seen as enough if you don’t have a full time job. You’re not enough unless you have the flashy car, the wife and 2.4 children. You can’t be sexually fluid, you can’t be gender fluid, and you can’t grow your hair out. There are still too many rules. People need to be more understanding of what other people choose and that’s that.
You came second to Little Mix on The X Factor. Looking back, how was that experience? It was one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken in my life. It’s an incredible platform, but it’s not something that I would rush to do again. All of us were pigeonholed and marketed. It is so dangerous to do that to people that young. A lot of people I’ve spoken to have told me the same thing; everyone has their own horror story of it being really detrimental to their mental health. I struggled. It took a lot to get my head together about the difference between their version of me and who I wanted to be. When you do something of that magnitude and there is no aftercare or anyone to help you through it, it is quite worrying. That said, it was a great platform. It kick started my career and allowed me to do things I’d never dreamed I’d be able to do without it. However, spiritually it was quite poisonous at time. How are you feeling about taking Hair around the country? I haven’t toured since 2013, so I thought it was about time I got my act together and did it again! There’s something special about taking a show like Hair and showing it to people around the UK where they might not get that much great theatre. I think it’s just amazing. I think this is so well written and so controversial, so I can’t wait to see how the different audiences receive it. I think there’s sometimes a feeling that other cities don’t get the same quality of performance that people get in London, but this is definitely the deal breaker for that. We’re going to be taking this around the UK and it is just as good and cleverly put together. I’m excited to be part of that. Is there anywhere you’re particularly looking forward to playing? I’m really looking forward to Brighton, it is one of my favourite places. I love the city. It’s so supermodern and gay friendly. It’s just going to be really comfortable. The audiences are always great there as well.
It’s about the fight against being conventional, against the conservative, doing 9 to 5, getting your hair cut & following the status quo

HAPPY RETURNS

S
ome artists hit you with a soaring voice or a technical prowess. But Madeleine Peyroux approaches her music with a sublime sense of heartbreak and healing. She’s affected audiences that way for over 22 years with a vocal sensibility reminiscent of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Billie Holiday. And it was on in streets of Paris where she was discovered. “Frankly, I was very lucky,” she tells me. It was Paris in the late 80s, early 90s. There were a tonne of people that were loved by French and tourist audiences, and the police would look the other way. Because we were having a great time! It was just a stunning time and place for all that to happen.” Born and raised in Athens, Georgia, by “hippies” and “eccentric educators”, when her parents divorced she moved with her mother to Paris, aged 13. Two years later she began singing with street musicians in the Latin Quarter. The story goes that a talent agent from Atlantic Records saw her performing on the streets of Paris. They signed her and in 1996 she released her debut album, Dreamland. But it wasn’t until Careless LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
Love in 2004 that her career really took off, the album a worldwide smash. And last year’s Anthem continued her love affair with Leonard Cohen: “I was on tour in the United States, the year prior to the US election. And during that time I felt I was seeing things that just couldn’t be addressed by the songs I was singing. I checked out this Leonard Cohen song called ‘Anthem’. That suddenly became an obsession for me. I was blown away by the positive, hopeful, encouraging lyrics and poetry.” Madeleine will be performing at this year’s Love Supreme festival, along with the likes of Gladys Knight, Jamie Cullum and Chick Corea. Live is where it’s truly at for this performer, one who learnt her trade on the streets of Paris and Europe. “I dropped out of school, and gave up everything that I might have had at a young age, to hang out on the streets, and play music, and practice, and listen and learn. And then I thought, ‘well when this is all over, I’ll go back to doing what I’m supposed to be doing’. Of course, that never happened.” Love Supreme, Glynde, 5-7 July. www.lovesupremefestival.com 13

Here we tried Jensen’s Old tom, neat and again in a cocktail. I loved this gin and I loved the food that we were able to pre-order on the journey, not included in the price but delicious and excellent value, the best taramasalata I have had in decades! imi Hendrix once sang “Are you experienced” and until now I thought that when it came to experiences I was pretty well experienced. I’m not going to list some of the crazy and, dare I say it, dangerous things I have undertaken in my 63 years but I hasten to say that without them life would have been duller. Experiential events are the latest trend from dining to sky diving, the latter not something I will be doing anytime soon. But the Gin Journey was one that had a certain, if predictable appeal, yeah I love a gin we all know that. Gin Journey started in London to a great reception and now it has hit Brighton. Well I had to go, of course I did. On a pleasant June Saturday I made my way to The Fix in Regency Square for a 1pm start. I was first to arrive of course. I am paranoid about

Our hosts were Kate, a lovely northerner with a great scouse accent that made me feel very at home, and local bar boy Jake Goldstein who can certainly mix a mean cocktail. The format was clear, five bars, five gins and five cocktails – in just under five hours! Our first gin was at The Fix. Jake gave us some very good tasting notes, then some real gin knowledge, history followed by brand knowledge and then we were in, sniffing, gazing and swilling away like pros. Gin one was Foxhole, full of character and character that lived on in the refreshing cocktail. We boarded the bus for a 50 metre journey to Gung Ho in Preston Street where gin two was Porter’s Tropical, loved the gin but failed at the

stage T
he sad news of the recent death of Philip Osment, actor director and playwright for Gay Sweatshop reminded me of how times have changed, even if not for the better. With the festival and the fringe over it seems appropriate to write about queer theatre. My first experience of the genre started back in the 70s with companies like Le Grande Eugene and Gay Sweatshop. Groundbreaking stuff that blasted gay culture into the mainstream after lurking in the dark corners of theatre’s closets for hundreds of years. Brilliant talents emerged, none less brilliant than Neil Bartlett who went on to become not only one of the countries most prolific and talented directors but also a brilliant playwright and novelist too. His work no doubt laid the foundations for other brilliant new writers too. By this I mean no disrespect to Noel Coward, Joe Orton, Tennessee Williams and of course Oscar Wilde, but here I am talking about a new generation of writers who are creating work that is contemporary and poignant. On the fringe this year I saw a wonderful dramatisation of the seminal gay novel of the 1980s, The Milkman’s On His Way, a piece of history yes, but one that carries on being important in its message. The same can be said of All I See Is You, Cathryn Smith’s tale of homophobia and oppression, class struggle and police intervention is a moving exposition of time, not so long ago, when two men could not express their love. Heartbreaking stuff this that needs to be seen and shared by a new generation of young people. Boys at The Old Market was the blissful expression of manhood, done without anger but with joy and passion, an expression of the fact that being queer is as normal as not being queer, a story of true inclusivity. National Theatre of Scotland gave us My Right Left Foot, not queer theatre as such but, in its message about our twisted attempts to be politically correct it touched on almost every falsely minor minority. I now see that the brilliant Kit Redstone has a new play Passengers which opens in London before going to Edinburg this August. He is certainly a name to look out for. On TV things are looking up too. Not because there is more “gay”

“Things are looking up – not because there is more ‘gay’stuff but because it is being embraced by the mainstream ” stuff, no, because queer issues are embraced in the mainstream. Killing Eve has the most wonderful lesbian theme, Suranne Jones is thrilling in Gentleman Jack and let’s not forget Years and Years, brilliantly devised and written by Russell T Davies. I’m even dipping my toes in the water with a new play called Morning Glory starring Jason Sutton (AKA Miss Jason) directed by Allan Cardew, look out here for details of a Brighton preview before it heads up to Edinburgh. We’re here, we’re queer and we’re not about to disappear.
